The Word “Love” It’s February, the month of Valentine! That means we must be more loving than we have

always been. Sounds a little bit odd right? But that’s the time we see all the colors of love

reflected by the beautiful flowers, candies, cards, special events all with one aim of

expressing our love to those dear to our hearts. From proposals to reaffirmation, we see new

relationships to old ones sparkling with glitters of love.

So why is this four-letter word so important that it has this special day to itself? While the

origins of this day were not initially good, the sacrifices and courage of St. Valentine led to its

evolution. Through the centuries we have grown to cherish this day as a special day of love

to celebrate. But should it be the only day when we rise above to show our love to one

another? No, it goes beyond this day as we begin to trace the origins of the word love.

Beginning with its English roots it comes the word luf, derived from the Old English word

"lufu." In Old High German, it is "luba," and another Old English word, lēof, which means

dear. Another word related to love, "lubere" or "libere," comes to us from the Romans. This

Latin word means 'to please'. In all words related to the word love, roots relating to dear,

pleasing, and cherished may be found. More words can be added to these words that denote

love as we explore it roots in languages from other cultures.

What so special about this word in all these cultures is its universal meaning of having

affection, deep attraction or emotional attachment to others. Examples of these attributes

are seen in various aspects of our lives as we encounter others which lead to various types

of love being shown to family members, friends and spouses.

From our Christian heritage the origin of love is God and we are called to reciprocate that in

the first commandment by wholly loving God (with our heart, mind and soul) and then

extending that to our neighbors. Paul in his letter to the church in Corinth emphasizes the

importance of love in our lives reflecting these attributes of patience, kindness,

unselfishness, forgiving, humble and generosity.

Much as we cherish this special day with all its festivities, may we not be consumed with its

pageantry only, but be reminded of the meaning of love. Paul reflects that love is eternal, if

so, then we should strive to reflect that, with these words from Christ to his disciples to love

one another as he loved them.

Let us be reminded with these words from 1 John 4: 7 “Beloved let us love for God is love”

and reflect daily, anywhere, anytime as called upon to God’s glory.

Heavenly Tidbit

The beautiful Crèche (nativity scene) that graced our altar this past Advent was given

by the Franciscan Missions to a couple in our church as a thank you for many years of

dedicated work with the missions in many places, as well as right here at the General

Secretariat. The intent was that it be given to their home church, which they did in

either 2009 or 2010. The Crèche was made in Ecuador. How blessed we are! Not

only for the Crèche, but the couple who made this possible.
