PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEshane Wagoner – Wagoner homes, inc.

A few weeks ago, I was coaching my son’s basketball team and one of the boys became agitated because he was the first to get tagged out of a skills game we were playing. He came up to me and gave me a thorough two minute analysis about what had happened, why it happened, and how it happened. As I listened, my patience began to wear thin, but I refocused on what he was saying and realized he was planning his strategy for the next game. After logistically recognizing his options, he smiled and said “....that would give me a multiple choice!” “What?” I said, surprised that a 6 year old would be thinking this. “That would give me a multiple choice,” he said again with a big grin. Incredible! This little kid recognized that his odds of winning are always greater if he positioned himself to have more than one option. He was leaving a back door open if his other solutions didn’t work the next time he played. This kid could have a bright future in the building industry!

This little boy is probably the most passive kid on the team when it comes to mixing it up with the other kids. Sounds like me at an HBA Social event. However, in his mind, he wasn’t finished. He didn’t win that particular game, but he knew there was another one coming up and he was going to try again. As he calmly sat on the sideline hiding behind his veil of deceptive innocence, he was strategizing how to be bigger, faster, and stronger for his next turn. That’s when I realized he was mentally designing his Back Board Smashing Monster Dunker ROV while plotting out the right moment to use it. Then success will be all his, and he will win it all.

THE MONSTER DUNKER!

Amazing, the lessons you learn from children. The common sense approach they adhere to all too often becomes distorted as we get older. Opportunities are always around the corner. We need to leave all our options on the table so we have multiple choices when the opportunity presents itself. If we don’t, we can find ourselves out of the game, for good. So, the question is, are you designing your Backboard Smashing Monster Dunker ROV? If not, you should be. Timing is everything!

Speaking of timing, I want to remind everybody that the HBAWS is hosting it’s 25th Triad Home & Garden Show, February 22, 23, 24 at the LJVM Coliseum Complex - Education Building in Winston-Salem. The Original Triad Home & Garden Show is a platform of opportunity for all members of this association and the general public. There is something for everybody including builders, weekend warriors, homeowners looking for ideas, etc. Volunteers are always needed to help put the show on. Or, consider getting a booth to promote your business to thousands of potential new customers. If you are looking for a way to get involved and meet new people, this is a great way to do it! Heck, there might even be a Monster Dunker ROV there! Breathing FIRE!

Your invitation to the Member’s Preview Party is in the mail! HBA Members and a guest will have an opportunity to enjoy lunch /preview the show before it opens to the public - FREE! No entry without postcard, limited to first 200 members. Preview Party sponsored by Carter Lumber Company.

PROFESSIONAL WOMEN IN BUILDINGTracy Moorehead, President

Professional Women in Building MeetFirst Tuesday of each month, 5:30 p.m., HBAWS Conference Room

Our January meeting was held at Uncorked Masterpiece where we painted on canvas and ceramics and spent time catching up from the holidays and talking about our businesses. The many talents of our group were showcased at this fun event!

Many years ago the Professional Women in Building started the Lewis Wilson Scholarship Fund in memory of Lewis Wilson the owner of Wilson Lighting. We award two $500 scholarships annually, one to a student at the Career Center and one to a student at Forsyth Tech. The money to fund theses scholarships comes from sales of raffle tickets (for a garden related door prize) at the Professional Women in building booth at the Triad Home and Garden Show. The 2013 goals is $1,000. Due to the economy, we have fallen short of our goal the last few years. Help us exceed this year’s goal by purchasing raffle tickets at our booth at the THGS. You can see the fantastic raffle prize at the Preview Party (Feb. 22) as well as the entire weekend of the show ( Feb. 22, 23, 24). Tickets are $1.00/each or 6/$5.00 dollars. Your purchase of raffle tickets not only supports the Professional Women in Building, but is an investment in vocational education students, the future of our building industry.

Meetings are the 1st Tuesday of each month at the HBA office. To join Professional Women in Building contact Gisela: [email protected] or Tracy at [email protected]. Our next meeting will be held February 5, at the HBA office, were plans will be finalized for the 2013 Triad Home and Garden Show.

Smith Phillips Building Supply, est. 1880, is one of the oldest continuously running lumber yards in the Carolinas. Founded by M.D. Smith and Joe Phillips. They created a company focused on customer satisfaction, quality products, and service to the community. In 1978 the company was purchased by current CEO and President Mickey Boles maintaining local ownership and a commitment to the principles that the original founders set forth. Today Smith Phillips continues to proudly serve the professional contractor in the Triad and the Statesville/Lake Norman markets with two full line locations.

The past few years have been very tough for our industry and especially hard on the supply side as we have seen several of the local lumber yards in our area close and many of the national players leave the market. Smith Phillips believes we have weathered the toughest part of the storm and that 2013 will be a turning point for our local building market. With deep roots in Winston-Salem, Smith Phillips maintains a strong foundation in the community with a commitment to service, will continue to partner with area builders as we all look to grow our businesses with the rebound in housing. There are a lot of signs showing optimism for the near future.

A full line supplier of lumber and building materials, specialising in lumber, decking, millwork, windows, doors, engineered wood products, and roofing. We pride ourselves in having a full staff of qualified professionals to serve our builders with specialists in roofing, engineered wood, architectural millwork, and in-house window service technician.

Smith Phillips has fielded the Hammertime Cycle Team for the last 5 yrs to participate in the Tour to Tanglewood for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The team is comprised of employees, builders, friends & suppliers. Open to anyone who wants to participate. Team Hammertime has raised over $60,000 for National MS & are winners of the coveted “Best Corporate Jersey” 4 of the 5 yrs (see photos on facebook!).

Rick Busch is the2013 As-sociate Members Commit-tee chair person and the owner of Busch Insurance Services, Inc., a local insur-ance agency that works with all types of construc-tion related businesses.

He represents Builders Mu-tual as well as many other insurance carriers who provide general liability, workers compensation and more…

"It is difficult to make predictions, especially about the future." -- Mark Twain.”

Well, there you have it. It’s hard to know what tomorrow brings, and even harder when you’re working in the construction industry.

If you’re like me you’re getting information from everywhere, some of the experts say we’re in for robust growth this year, others say it’s more of the same. At some point I think you just have to shake your head in wonder and make your own predictions. So here are some of mine for 2013:

• Winston Salem and our surrounding areas are just too nice a place to live. This means we have to have new houses. This means home builders are going to be fine this year.

• I think people are sick and tired of being sick and tired. Those folks who’ve been waiting on “around the house” projects, big and small, are going to jump into the fray this year. This means remodelers are going to be fine this year.

• We’re all driving our cars longer. Instead of trading at 4 to 5 years I have lots of clients who are waiting 9 and 10 years. Cars wear out, so people need cars. This means the guys and gals selling cars are going to fine this year.

• I just wrote The Home Builders Association of Winston Salem a check for my 2013 dues. As I filled in the amount I did some quick math on what return on my association membership I receive.

- Access to a professional staff here in Winston Salem - Participation in Local, State and Federal Legislative issues. - The ability to network with over 450 local construction professionals, and much more.

I predict 2013 is going to be terrific for our association and we’re all going to be fine this year.

So here’s to the start of a great year with a great group of people. The Home and Garden Show is just around the corner and that means Springtime is really close.

SPIKE CLUB MEETS MONTHLY1st Wednesday, 11:45am, HBA

SPIKE UPDATE

Jodi Tate,Spike Committee Chairman

As I think about 2013 and my opportunities, I realize I must continue to evolve and change in order to capitalize on the doors that will open ahead. I also, know that to overcome challenges I must look for solutions and alternatives. Change is intimidating for some and downright scary for others. We all know it is inevitable, but how do we go about embracing it? I found a couple simple tips that have worked for me and I will share them with you.

Acknowledge your apprehension about the impending change. It is okay to feel anxious about 1. something new.

Ask for help by going to someone or another resource to educate yourself about the change.2.

“This too shall pass”. Remember discomfort is temporary.3.

Move forward. Do not stay in the past hoping it will come back.4.

Find the silver lining in change. Make a list of everything positive that can happen by making the 5. change. Adjust your attitude.

Change can be is exciting if you will let it open the door to possibilities. Ask yourself today, “What’s next for me?”

“To improve is to change, to be perfect is to change often.” - Winston Churchill
