Quilting Bees & Heads at Ease Program Thanked

The Quilting Bees have received a very heartfeltthank you letter for participating with the ladies ofthe Heads of Ease program in providing some verythoughtful and useful pillowcases to the 510th Clear-ance Company at Forward Operating Base (FOB)Farah, Afghanistan.

The FOB Farah is one of the most western and iso-lated FOBs in all of Afghanistan. There isnt any PostExchange or store provided by any of the US Forcesthere, so the gift of pillowcases by mail was so verywelcomed by everyone in the company.

They went on to say, Thank you for the valuable timeand effort spent in sending these simple, but ex-tremely valuable, pillowcases. They certainly remindus of the support we have back in the States.

There are many benets of exercise. Some of these

benets are different than the typical things we thinkabout.

Movement eases stiff, achy joints. Thoughcounterintuitive, rest isnt ideal to reduce pain

and stiffness in the knees, shoulders, or back.According to a Stanford research scientist,

healthy adults who performed consistent aero-bic activity reported 25% less musculoskeletal

pain than sedentary peers. Exercise causes

the release of the bodys natural pain relieverscalled endorphins. Endorphins may also help

protect against tiny tears in tendons and muscles. In research conducted at theUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, arthritis sufferers felt 25% less pain

and 16% less stiffness after six months of low-impact balance and strengtheningexercises. Most people felt improvement in just a few weeks.

Exercise helps crank up the bodys natural energy

production. 50% of adults reported feeling tired atleast one day a week. Regular exercise boosts fatigue-ghting brain chemicals. Dopamine and norepinephrine

help you feel more energetic. And, serotonin acts as amood-enhancer. So, when fatigue kicks in, take a brisk

30-minute walk instead of grabbing a cup of coffee.

Being active also improves sleep. The Journal, Sleep

Medicine, reports women age 60 and older who walkedor danced for at least an hour, four times per week,

woke up half as often and slept an average of 48 moreminutes than sedentary women. With age, sleep pat-

terns change and we spend more of the night in the lighter sleep phases. Exer-cise can help maintain deeper sleep.

Diabetes risk is reduced through exercise. Walking two miles, ve

times per week, can be more effective in controlling blood sugar

and preventing diabetes than running twice as much. Moderateexercise such as walking is fueled mostly by fat. This may improve

the bodys ability to reduce insulin and control blood sugar.

The eyes also benet from exercise. An active lifestyle can reducethe risk of age-related macular degeneration by up to 70%. The

benet of exercise on the eyes is the same as that of the heart. Im-provement of blood ow and reduction of blood pressure is the key.

In addition to helping the heart and keeping the waistline smaller, exercise provides many benets we dont always realize.
