Old ClackmannanshireRiot at the kirk

Riot at the kirk: News from Alloa 1750.On the 16th of september there took place a riot during the sermon at the kirk by the new and unpopular Mr Syme.Locals were so angry with him they locked the church, raised a flag and rang the bells all day.In November, four companies of Soldiers were sent to Alloa to quell further disturbances from colliers. It is believed the unrest is due to the parishioners assumption that ministers have been picked more for their family ties than for their religeous worthynessjan 1751. Church rioters(ring-leaders) have been sentenced to seven years in the colonies.By April 1751 as a gesture of reconciliationi t had been decided that the rioters should be released with a caution.

Coronation tree 1902

In 1902 coronation trees were planted in Tullibody and Alloa for Eward VII.The Alloa one was ripped out the ground by a vandal the same evening.

Great War medal found in Tullibody

This is a victory medal from the first world war.It was found in the eighties in Tullibody and the person who found it would like to return if possible to the family of the recipient. It was awarded to Private J Hunter 3817 .Some further research came up with Private James Hunter.was first an Argyll & Sutherland Highlander No 3817 then Machine Gun Corps No 139683.He enlisted 22-02-16.Discharged 14-12-18 aged 23 yrs 6 months.so born around june 1895.he was discharged due to illness. Unfortunately this is where the trail goes cold. Was private Hunter a local as we said the current owner of the medal would like to return it to the family.

Covenanters put to death

In 1879 Rober Louis Stevenson published Edinburgh:picturesque notes. In it he added a letter about the execution of five covenanters in 1681.If the witness is to be believed all five men were decapitated by the hand of Alloa man Patrick Foreman.Patrick was a follower of Donald Cargill who would preach illegally in fields to congregations around Scotland. After preaching in fife several Alloa men were rounded up by the authorities. When Patrick was captured he had a knife on him inscribed "for cutting tyrants throats".He was to be released for lack of evidence if he swore to behave himself but he was having none of it.In October 1681 five men including Patrick Foreman were hanged in Edinburgh.Patrick's right hand was used to cut off all five men's heads and these were put on show. They were secretly gathered up one evening and buried.Forty-five years later they were rediscovered and publicly reburied. There is a possibility that Patrick and other Alloa men were captured by Lord Mar and held at Alloa tower before being sent to Edinburgh.

Throsk Island

We have all heard of Alloa and Tullibody Inch but at one time there was a third Island as can be seen on this old map from 1681.Also notice the spelling for Alloa.

From Alloa to JapanOriginal spot,Boer war memorial

In each issue we would like to feature an Alloa built boat.Hopefully this will be the first of many. This is the Sunpath built in Alloa 1919 and renamed the Taikai Maru by the Japanese in ww2.it was sunk by US submarine Raton in 1944. 445 troops and 101 crewmen and gunners were killed.
