Aruba Okays Plan for More Power, Water

The Aruba Island Council has ap-

proved a proposed expansion of the

island's sea-water distillation and

electricity generation facilities. Cost

of the project is estimated at Fls.

29,000,000.

The plans call for raising the is-

land's fresh-water production from

2300 to 13,000 tons per day by in- stalling four new distillation units

and increasing the capacity of exist-

ing cquipment.

The new equipment will provide additional electricity generating fa- cilities.

Deputy O. S. Henriquez, speaking

for the government on the project,

said increased water and power fa- cilities were necessary to supply fu- ture industrial and agricultural

needs and to reduce the cost of these utilities to house hold consumers.

The government proposes to fi- nance the project through a bond issue. The Lago Thrift Foundation announced it would invest in bonds if the issuance terms met the foundation's specifications.

Lago announced it would with- hoid a decision on its proposed pur- chase of fresh water pending availability of the water.

Current plans call for installation of the new equipment west of the existing water plant at Balashi.
