Dearchurch family,Dear Church Family,

It is difficult to believe that we are beginning 2010. The decade is coming to a close and there is much for which to celebrate! Even in the midst of the worst recession this country has seen in de-cades, faithful people continue to be blessed by a faithful God! Our trust here at First Presbyterian continues to be placed in Him and He is doing a wonderful work in our midst!

When I was on staff at First Presbyterian Church of Nashville, Tennessee, I remem-ber The Rev. Todd Jones offering to the congregation a list of “Ten Biblical Ideas to Improve Your Life.” The beginning of the year is always an opportunity to assess your life and walk with God. For your contemplation as we find ourselves in 2010, let me offer to you the principles shared by Rev. Jones:

1. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1) Build your life on a foundation that will hold, which can only be upon the sovereignty of a great God. Fear God alone, and you will banish the hold all smaller fears have upon your life!

2. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). We can find abiding peace and contentment when we make “the joy of the Lord our strength.” Learning to delight in the Lord shapes our desires in ways that bring maturity and wisdom.

3. Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him; do not fret over those who prosper in their way, over those who carry out evil desires (Psalm 37:7). Compar-ison to others is the source of all unhappiness. Let your trust in the providence of God deepen your soul. You have more control over yourself than over others!

4. Those with good sense are slow to anger, and it is their glory to overlook an offense (Proverbs 19:11). Nothing stretches your heart like forgiving an offense, and being slow to anger is God’s way with us.

5. A person’s pride will bring humiliation, but one who is lowly in spirit will ob-tain honor (Proverbs 29:23). Jesus said, “For I am meek and lowly of heart, and you will find rest unto your soul.” Do you suppose that Jesus was on to some-thing?

6. Discipline your children, and they will give you rest; they will give delight to your heart (Proverbs 29:17). Trust me when I say that with your kids, less will end up being more. Be generous with your time, but be very judicious with ev-erything else. The goal is to make your children strong and self-disciplined. You are not entrusted your children to please them and to indulge their appetites.

6

Page 7: February Here@First

7

7. Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it (Proverbs 3:27). We bless those God places in our lives when we affirm their gifts and appreciate their accomplishments. Wil-liam James was speaking the truth when he said, “The deepest craving in the human soul is the craving to be appreciated.” Be fair and generous of spirit with people.

8. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21). If Jesus’ life and death teach us anything, they teach us that the power of love is stronger than every form of loveless power. Believe in the power of the Gospel more than in any other power in all the world!

9. The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver (II Corinthians 9:6,7). It really is more blessed to give than to receive!

10. Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35). What we need more than we need anything else in 2010 is Jesus! And what God wants to give you in 2010 is what God wants to give you for all eternity, and that is Jesus.

You may choose different biblical principles for 2010. If these choices have challenged you to do such thinking, I rejoice! As Rev. Jones said, we serve a God of abundant wisdom and love, which makes us rich beyond our deserv-ing. May God bless you with every good and perfect gift in 2010!

Blessings in His service,

Pastor Jack

faMIly lIfe news

February is the month we celebrate LOVE! Some of us go all out and buy cards, candies, gifts, and even go out for romantic dinners to celebrate. Some of us don’t go that far, but we are usually prompted to at least think about our most important love relationship – our marriage relationship. Praying together is a wonderful way to bless your spouse and to enrich your marriage. For some of us praying to-gether can be an uncomfortable thing to do, so here are some great ideas for getting started. Pray silently but together. This is a great way to start praying to-gether. Sit together in a quiet place, and talk about some things you both would like to pray about. Then simply begin praying silently. Begin by holding hands while praying silently, then when one person is finished they simply squeeze the other’s hand and then when the other person finishes they squeeze back.

write a prayer and then share it. Write out a prayer for each other and then either give it to each other or sit together and read them out loud together. Share any blessings that come from the prayer.

Pray a Bible verse or prayer from scripture for one another. There are countless passages of scripture that can be used. For example, Philippians 1:9-10. Using this verse here is how it would sound if I prayed it for my husband Bill: Jesus, this is my prayer for Bill: That his love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that he may be able to discern what is best and will be pure and blameless until the day Christ returns. Amen.

Another way is to write the prayer out and give it to your spouse and let them know you are praying a verse for them.

Commit to praying together daily. Pick a time and place and be consistent. Even if it is just 5 minutes in the kitchen before you leave for the day it will make a difference in your marriage!

your lIfe MatterS to GoDMy life matters to God. At times it is difficult to hold that thought in my heart. How easy it is to just slide through life and pick up all the negatives: taking things people say personally, talking down to myself and believing lies of the enemy, just to name a few. Anybody else there?

Sometimes I see myself as a magnet being drug through the dirt only to pick up the metal shavings of the negative miserable things when I really want to be the magnet shin-ing brightly in Heaven that picks up the glory of God with his hope, peace, love, and joy. Most of the time I am success-ful, but sometimes I fall back into the old habits. Facilitating Lifekeys has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. Not only to walk along side others as they reach for a better life, but to have the continual reminders that I always have the Lord walking along side me. It always comes back to my making choices and changes in my life. Oh, that sounds so easy! But I cannot do it alone and don’t want to do it alone. I need the help of the Lord Jesus Christ and the relationships he has given me. He has put me on an amazing journey with Lifekeys. My life matters to God.

What is your story?

thankfulness and generosity

(excerpt)

Thankfulness is an essential aspect in life. So many times we are so focused on what we want instead of being thankful for what we have, and so we think IF I just had this then then I would be satisfied. This is always the great lie because once we get it… a few days, weeks or months go by and we have a sense of needing something else.

We see this lie attacking the nation of Cambodia as the nation has started to develop. In the last 3 years many people’s income level has increased and they are able to afford more things and yet instead of a focus on thankfulness often the focus is on what we don’t have. As consumerism has now consumed the world let us not fall into the lie that the media bombards us with daily, but let us respond with Thankful hearts for what we do have! So we want to challenge you to sit down and think about why you are thankful…
