Staff Appreciation Week The second week of February saw a variety of activity in the schools and centres of the board and at Head Office in recognition of the work of our staff members. Our organization is blessed with staff members in all functions whose daily efforts show a remarkable commitment to promoting student success. It was a delight to see our community recognize formally their contributions. Teacher – Teacher Convention On the February 8th board-wide Professional Day, the Pearson Teachers Union and the board jointly sponsored a “Teacher-to-Teacher” mini convention, featuring workshops led by teachers for teachers. It was a vibrant display of the expertise of our staff members and their willingness to share techniques and tips with their colleagues. There is no doubt that this type of mentoring enriches our system for years to come. Math Olympics The second evening of our Math Olympics took place on February 10, replacing the December date that was cancelled due to inclement weather. Hosted at Beurling Academy, the evening brought together competitive teams from Allion, Bishop Whelan, Children’s World, Christmas Park, Greendale, Meadowbrook, Orchard, St-Lawrence Senior, St-Patrick, Thorndale and Verdun Elementary in a stimulating learning activity. CSC “Mega Day” This year, the LBPSB organized the student leadership MEGA DAY, held at PCHS on February 12th. This one-day conference was geared mainly to younger student leaders from Secondary 1, 2 and 3. The theme of the

Strategic Plan Development Over the past several weeks, significant discussions and study have taken place at the senior

administrative level regarding the modification of the Strategic Plan of the school board. Under the leadership of Senior Director, Steve Balleine, a committee formulated a draft strategic plan that was presented to a joint Council - Senior Administration workshop. After consultation and adoption by Council, this strategic plan will be subject to an agreement between the school board and MELS that specifies performance objectives, each of which is measurable. The school success plan, will in many ways reflect the school board objectives and will also include specific, measurable objectives. Registration Period The registration period for new students and for re-registration of returning students has taken place during the month of February and, in the case of students new to our school board and community, will continue throughout the balance of the school year. These enrollment numbers are of critical importance to our ongoing planning for the 2010-2011 school year and are monitored very carefully on a continual basis. This is always extremely busy time for our secretarial staff at the school level and for those who work in our central registration office. I wish to extend thanks to them for their extraordinary efforts in welcoming new registrations to our system.

event was “Find Your Inner Hero, Be a Super Leader!” and featured keynote speakers Ian Tyson and Kate Whitfield. The event served as dry run for next fall’s Canadian Student Leadership Conference, since the spirit groups and several workshops will be led by Secondary IV students who will be the animators for CSLC 2010. Four hundred delegates from 20 Montreal area high schools (including LBPSB, EMSB, New Frontiers and QAIS) participated in a terrific day. Congratulations to all who worked so hard. You can be proud of the accomplish-ment. FSSTT Lecture This popular lecture series, sponsored by our Family, School and Student Treatment and Support team (FSSTT) of our Student Services Department, presented a most fascinating and relevant evening on “Children and Stress”, an ever-more pressing factor with which our young people must deal. March Break This “break” week marks a major point in the school calendar in that, upon return, we are in a period of intense activity. End-of-year exams are approaching rapidly, Spring activities and field trips become more frequent and planning at school and Head Office levels intensify in preparation for 2010-2011. R.T. BHS STUDENTS MEET ASTRONAUT ROBERT THIRSK

A lucky grade 11 Discovery Science class from Beaconsfield High School had the opportunity to welcome Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk back to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) on January 19th. Dr. Thirsk was aboard the International Space Station for six months and hadn’t been back to Canada since his mission.

The BHS students had the opportunity to greet Dr. Thirsk as he came into the CSA, located in St. Hubert, and received honours for his 25 years of service. The students then attended a press conference given by the veteran astronaut where he showed and narrated a video about his experience in space. Once the video was over,

five students asked the astronaut questions about his 188-day mission. Following the press conference, the class of about 30 received a tour of the CSA. The exhilarating experience was made possible by the Lester B. Pearson School Board’s Interactive Community Partnerships department.

A Note of Thanks The Central Parents’ Committee of the Lester B. Pearson School Board, on behalf of all

parents throughout our elementary and secondary schools, would like to take this

opportunity to express our gratitude for what you do each day.

You embrace your profession with enthusiasm and dedication, as you guide and challenge

our children to succeed and reach their fullest potential.

We are truly grateful for the work you do.

Thank you

Tuesday February 2nd marked the opening ceremonies for the 1st ever P.E.T.E.S. Winter Olympics. The ceremony included a visit from Cheryl Brazeau who took part in the Olympic Torch Run. Ms.Brazeau brought her torch and spoke to the students about her experience. Decked out in red, yellow, green, blue and black tuques, the P.E.T.E.S. community gathered to form a human representation of the 5 Olympic rings. The students took part in a variety of winter Olympic activities throughout the week such as; bobsleigh, luge, curling, biathlon, skating and skiing. Our Home and School provided hot chocolate and cookies to all participants. The culmina-

CWA SYMPOSIUM 2010: EDUCATION IN ACTION

On February 24th, CWA grade 6 students will be hosting the Annual CWA Exhibition, this is a celebration of their learning for the past seven years within the IB Programme. This year, the grade 6 students selected the theme: Education in Action. This will be the featured topic for their groups project that will be presented at the CWA Exhibition. This event is open to the public from 4-6 pm. All projects must revolve around the following central idea: A society’s educational system is influenced by its economy, culture, beliefs and values. To jump start the exhibition and their projects, the grade 6 students participated in the Annual Symposium on January 14th that involved hearing the presentations and interacting with many guest speakers. We were very fortunate to have fabulous presenters again this year and would like to take this opportunity to thank the following educational professionals for their valuable time and expertise. At the end of the event, the students were very motivated to begin to develop their own research project.

Key Note Speaker: Leo LaFrance, Assistant Deputy for the Minister of Education Presenters: Charles Merilees, Sector 1 Director, LBPSB Ruben Fazio, Commissioner Lasalle/Verdun Christopher Fuzessy, Coordinator, Student Services, LBPSB Frédérick Urpesk and Marc-André Viens, In-school administrators for La Commission Scolaire Marguerite Bourgeois Engineers without Borders Richard Oliver, Director of Vocational Training, LBPSB Ian Spencer, Guidance Counselor, Riverdale High School Mary-Anne Fykes, Spiritual Animator, Lasalle/Verdun Randy Howard, Spiritual Animator Lasalle/Verdun Brian Ewenson, Space Engineer, CSA/ NASA Nancy Battet (for her role in organizing this day – Thank You!)

Here are comments from two of our grade

6 students: “I think the symposium was a great idea to learn more about education, our topic for exhibition. They all spoke about different issues which made it very interesting for the students.” “ The students listened attentively and ask questions. We wish to thank the guest speakers for sharing their knowledge. Because of their great work and inspiration, we are now ready to start our research projects for 2010 Exhibition.” David Meloche - Principal of Children’s World Academy

Together we have forged ties with professionals within our communities to promote educational success. Many of these professionals volunteer their time to speak to students about their careers or to show them how their departments or businesses work. Players from the Montreal sports teams regularly speak to students about the importance of staying in school and getting an education. We have hosted a number of student volunteer fairs and peace summits which highlight the caring and nurturing spirit of all our students. Many visit local senior residences and others knit hats and scarves and collect food for those in need. Our students also work with

many organizations (Peaceful Schools International, Free the Children, Terry Fox Foundation) to raise money to build schools in Africa, India and South America, to fight cancer and to raise the awareness of the plight of children worldwide. Our students also excel in sports, music and academic competitions. I am very proud of our school board, the staff and especially our students. They are our future and I feel that it is safe in their capable hands. I am honoured to have played a very small role in their education.

CRAIG BERGER – Ward 8 - Roxboro, Pierrefonds East Email: [email protected] It is that time of the school year when everyone takes a week off to recharge their batteries on many fronts. For

many it is a chance to get away from the deep Quebec winters (although so far we have been blessed with a rather tame winter). For others, it is a time to relax, take a break from studies or work and enjoy the extra time to spend with family. And for some it is a time of stress trying to make arrangements to keep their children safe and sound for the March break. But one thing is for sure March break marks the beginning of the stretch run of the school year. The time of year when we look at such things as implementation of Major School Change decisions, budget consultations, three year plans

for use of our buildings and the beginning of the staffing process all point to the road to the end of one school year while planning for the next one. All of these are looked at with one goal in mind: how do we ensure the most fulfilling education for our students while ensuring their ultimate chances for success both in school and in the wider community at large. I believe that many of the decisions taken during the recent Major School Change process will go a long way towards that goal. The development and implementation of enhanced programs to help our students better acquire and maintain their skills in French is one that I am truly excited about. Parents and students alike voiced a strong opinion as to the need to increase the exposure our students receive to French not only in the academic setting of the school but also in the social aspects. The challenge we need to meet is a big one involving human and material

resources. I believe that we will be able to meet the challenge along with the help and understanding of our stakeholders. I am prepared to work along with our stakeholders to ensure that we are successful in meeting the challenge. It has been and is my privilege to have been associated with the Riverdale High School community since my election as a commissioner. I look to them as an example of how a community can work together with the staff and administration of a school in order to meet the challenges of ensuring student success in a safe and caring environment. I look forward to continue working with all of the parents, staff and administration of Riverdale as they continue their road to success for their students and school. Finally, I wish you all a very peaceful, restful and healthy March break. Come back recharged so that we can all finish the stretch run and cross the finish line with a clear vision of the road to success for all of our students in view.

Our school lucked out on Jan.13th as the new You Tube sensation boy group, “Wow”, who has been filling up halls of upwards of 8000 or so across the world for the past 6 months, dropped by for a meet, greet, and photo op with mainly the female students of the school. As soon as our Administra-tive Assistant, Mr. Andrew Henry, gave the word to open the doors, it was a mad rush to the stage to see and

hear this popular group of the day. The guys, dressed up as colorful as they do in their energetic shows, were gracious in taking time to briefly chat with many of the students as they got a chance to get up close and personal with their new musical heroes after doing a brief a cappella song and plugged their upcoming show at Club Soda. The group, who were on 3-school tour on this day, came

to the school as a result of an online contest of why they should visit the school and of course a large number responded, and we would like to thank two of our Secondary 5 students for coordinating this visit, Sara Prendergast and Brittany MacArthur, and would like to thank our administrative team to allow the group to visit. This year, St-Thomas sent 10 of its students to participate in the conference, and the reviews are all positive. “It was a fantastic experience and the hard working staff really made it fun for everyone in my committee. I found it also helped open our eyes as to where we ranked as students amongst a more international crowd” said Brian Ve, a member of the rebel group in the Chiapas Rebellion Crisis committee, who was voted President of Mexico in a surprise turn of events at the end of the weekend. Other students that participated included Megan Abley (a member of the Turkish Cabinet during its crisis of 1974), Daniel Borsellino (a member of the Organization of American States), William Chan (representing Lucien Cliche of the Conseil Exécutif du Quebec 1960 – a committee simulating the Quebec Cabinet in 1960, soon after Jean Lesage and his Liberal

WILDER PENFIELD SUPPORTS HAITI

BAGS FOR BEDS

Since September, students and staff at Pierrefonds Comprehensive High School have been busy creating sleeping mats out of milk bags. The bags are collected, cut, looped together to form the ‘wool’ and then crocheted into mats that will be sent to children in developing countries. These mats provide a bug-proof, waterproof, durable option to sleep on for these children, many of whom sleep on the ground. To date, 3 mats have been completed, with 3 more in the

works. Our goal is to complete 10 mats by June.

Wilder Penfield students, staff and community, in an effort to support Haiti, are organizing several fundraisers in February. Bubble Gum day, Crazy Hair day, Wear Canada day and wear the Haitian Flag Colors day for Skittles are the weekly activities that

will conclude with the February 26th Winter Carnival day where the whole school will be participating in winter-inspired indoor and outdoor activities. Grade 6 students have it all covered: indoor spa room, indoor games room will warm up those

This year at St. Charles a different approach was held for Open House. Open House was combined with Portfolio Night as well as the French Book Fair and the grad bake sale. One could feel the school come alive with all the activities going on in the individual classrooms and the hallways showcased much of the children’s work. The children were very proud to “show off” the end result of a lot of effort by everyone. To commemorate the Olympics, each class represented a country

and projects about that country were on display for all to see. The grade 6 peer mediators did a wonderful job showcasing the school to prospective parents. The activities did not end there, the students rose to the challenge and made Haiti flags and in turn solicited donations. Once again the community responded generously and in total, a donation of $1,023 was made to “Free The Children - Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund”. Thanks to all the staff, the volunteers, and the peer

Some of the students of Evergreen have also been exchanging letters with the students of Maminza. Val Morris, the NGO was very touched by our donation and since the building was made with local bricks called Kimberley bricks, combined with my role in this endeavour they have named the kitchen ‘Kim’s Kitchen’.

While I was the principal at Evergreen the Home and School contributed to a very special project. To prepare the grade five students for their graduation year, they thought it would be a great opportunity to develop a global perspective. At the end of the school year, they filled a suitcase with toothbrushes, toothpaste and underwear for me to take on my trip to South Africa. While I was in South Africa I met a woman by the name of Val Morris who had just developed an NGO (non governmental organization) to support literacy development in the Mpumalanga area. She took me to visit a number of schools, one of which was Maminza. I took pictures of the school and shared with the members of the Evergreen Home and School some of the needs that the school had. One thing that really stood out to me and to many of the parents on the Home and School executive was the fact that parent volunteers were feeding more than three hundred orphans a daily nutritional porridge. They were making the porridge on an open fire. I am very proud to share with you the photos of the kitchen that was built with funds provided by the Evergreen Home and School! Can you believe we’re already in February? The months are flying by! And what a month it has been. I am so proud to be a

part of this school board. Each and every day I continue to be amazed at what the LBPSB’s students and staff achieve. As you saw on the front page of the Pearson News, the school board’s schools and centres managed to raise an incredi-

ble amount of money to help Haiti after that devastating earthquake in January. It leaves me speechless and in awe of what was accomplished in a short time for such a good cause. The way the Lester B family has come together to help the people of Haiti is amazing and I thank you all for contributing to the cause. The January issue of the Pearson News was

unique in that it was the first time this newsletter has been electronic since its inception. I am happy to say the changes were well-received and I’ve seen an increase in articles submitted for this issue. I’m absolutely elated to see the growth in the Pearson News in just one short month. I hope to see it expand even more in the coming months. Don’t forget to sign up to have the Pearson News delivered

REPORT FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD HAITI RELIEF FUNDRAISING The Lester B Pearson School Board partnered with the borough of Pierrefonds/Roxboro to host a very successful concert to raise money for Haiti relief

efforts in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck that country on January 12th. Local organizer Mike Corolian of Sparkenciel co-hosted the event with Ric Peterson of CJAD radio 800. More than a dozen performers entertained the west island audience that included Pierre-Richard Casimir, Consul General of Haiti, the mayor of Pierrefonds/Roxboro, borough and city councilors, MP Denis Coderre, Immigration Minister Yolande James, MNA Geoff Kelley, and a number of LBPSB Commissioners. Over $14,000 was raised for the Canadian Red Cross. LBPSB STUDENTS & STAFF HELP HAITI With still a couple of schools to hold their fundraising events, LBPSB schools have reported on their fundraising efforts. Students and staff in all LBPSB schools and centres got together in the days following the earthquake to lend a hand and raise money for the Red Cross, Free the Children, and Oxfam. The local events took many forms and the result was the collection of the unbelievable amount of more than $102,000. We talk about the importance our board places on global issues and teaching the responsibility we all have for each other on this planet. That LBPSB philosophy was translated into concrete action when it counted most. Our congratulations and thanks go to everyone involved in these efforts. NEW SCHOOL NAME Following the adoption of the Major School Change resolutions on December 21st a merger committee was put in place to set the guidelines for the Bishop Whelan / Meadowbrook merge. One of the first issues the committee took up was to find a new name for the merged school in Lachine. Each school community was involved the seeking of a new name. Each community brought 10 possible names back to the merger committee who then pared down the

list to three names. The selected choices were then submitted to an election process in each school and the results submitted to the Council of Commission-ers for final selection, as per the Board’s policy. The name that chosen by the Council was also the name that garnered the most student support. Beginning July 1st, 2010 the elementary school situated at 740-52nd Avenue in Lachine will be known as: MAPLE GROVE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT The final touches are being applied to the second video Annual Report produced by the Lester B Pearson School Board. Our board is the only board to produce its annual report in electronic format. This year’s version will feature enhance reports from most departments along with the reports from the Chairman, the Director General, the Assistant Director General, and the Senior Directors. All legally required elements are included, such as the financial report and the ethics complaints report. Creating the report in this format saves the board thousands of dollars per year in printing and distribution costs, while meeting the requirements of the Ministry of Education, Leisure, and Sport. The report will be presented to the public prior to the beginning of regular March meeting of the Council of Commissioners. NOTE: The webcast for March will begin at 7:00 pm to include the presentation of the Annual Report. STRATEGIC PLAN The draft Strategic Plan for 2010 – 2015 is in the final stages of preparation. The plan is being built on the model and main pillars detailed in the 2006 – 2009 Strategic Plan, with the new directions as outlines by the Ministry of Education being incorporated. Following the public presentation of the Plan prior to the start of the March meeting of the Council of Commissioners, the draft plan will be sent to all consultative partners for comment and input. The plan should be ready for consideration and adoption by the Council at the June 2010 meeting. NOTE: The webcast for March will begin

at 7:00 pm to include the presentation of the Annual Report. REVISION OF THE LBPSB ELECTORAL MAP Under provisions adopted by the Quebec National Assembly the territory of the Lester B Pearson School Board the board’s territory will be comprised of 10 electoral districts instead of the current 21. Though no word has been had from the Minister regarding the Board’s request for an additional 5 electoral wards, the law requires that the process to divide the territory begin. In that regard, the Board’s Director of Legal Affairs has engaged Mr. Don Taylor to prepare a proposal for the new configuration. Mr. Taylor oversaw the 2007 school board election and is very familiar with the Board, the territory, and the electoral law requirements. He will report back to the Board in the coming months and his recommendations will then be made available for public comment and suggestion, after which the new LBPSB electoral map will be forwarded to the Director General of Elections for final approval. COMPLAINT EXAMINATION PROCEDURE BY-LAW In accordance with the Education Act, the Board has developed a draft of the new Complaint Examination Procedure policy. The policy details the steps a complainant will have to follow in lodging complaints by or on behalf of students of our Board. As per the government regulations, which were delivered to Boards early in January of this year, the Student Ombudsman will be available to provide a forum for complaints after the usual Board process for dealing with complaints has been followed. The Student Ombudsman will have 30 days to investigate the complaint, once she/he has determined that the complaint is one over which they have the authority upon which to make recommen-dations. Those recommendations will then be forwarded to the Council of Commissioners for final determination. The law requires that only the Central Parents Committee be consulted on this policy, but in keeping with the Board’s practices, the document will be sent to all consultative partners for comment. The consultation responses are due back to the Director of Secretariat by April 15th with a (CONTINUED ON PAGE 11)

PEARSON NEWS REPORT FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, CONT’D. final version being presented at the April meeting of the Council of Commissioners. THREE YEAR PLAN OF ALLOCATION OF IMMOVABLES 2010/2011 – 2012/2013 As required by the Education Act, and as per the practice of the Lester B. Pearson School Board, the annual consultation on the three year plan of the allocation of immovables is being distributed to all consultative partners for comment. This year’s plan includes the changes brought about by the December 21st decisions on Major School Change. Consultation responses are due back to the Board by April 16th with a final version of the document to be presented for consideration at the April meeting of the Council of Commissioners. RELOCATION OF ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMS In the light of the Major School Change decisions taken on December 21st, which made available the building on Jubilee Street in Pointe Claire, the Board has decided to relocate the Alternative programs from Meadowbrook to this site. The students in these programs are registered with a regular LBPSB high school but benefit from this alternative setting to help

them focus on what they need to graduate with a high school leaving certificate. USE OF LBPSB PROPERTIES Negotiations regarding several of the currently unused LBPSB properties are progressing. Because of zoning requirements, limitations, and obligations, some of these negotiations take an extended period of time. Other potential agreements are subject to the involvement of one or more levels of government and those also take time. We expect that we will have several agreements to report on before the end of this school year, as negotiations with potentials partners are closing in on completion. NEW SCHOOL UPDATE The municipality of St-Lazare adopted 2 resolutions at their February town council meeting identifying 4 potential sites for the location of one or more new schools. Our Administration is working closely with the town’s ad-ministration in this process. We have already reviewed the potential of the sites and are hopeful to be able to start the construction of the new school soon. The town is holding a public consultation meeting and representatives of the Lester B

LORRAINE KLAASEN AND SOWETO GROOVE VISIT BEURLING ACADEMY

On Wednesday, February 10th, 2010, Lorraine Klaasen and her band, Soweto Groove, were in-vited to perform during Beurling Academy’s Black History Month Assembly. Lorraine Klaasen, the daughter of legendary South African Jazz singer Tandie Klaasen was born and raised in Soweto, South Africa. Both are reputed as Nelson Mandela’s favorite musicians. Destini Maighan, a student in Secondary III, who was the emcee for the assembly, intro-duced Lorraine Klaasen and her

band. In a matter of minutes, Lorraine’s dynamic stage presence had students and staff on their feet. Lorraine performed a variety of songs in English, French and African dialects, some of which she had written and others were popular songs from famous artists of the past. After hearing that one of the student’s role models was Bob Marley, Lorraine sang, “One Love.” At one point, the students jumped into one extremely long conga lines, when the song “Feeling Hot

Hot Hot” was performed. “Macarena” was another hit song and the students remembered to show off their dance moves on stage. It was an interactive performance as in between songs, Lorraine spoke to the students about the importance of values, family and role models. Lorraine Klaasen really rocked Beurling Academy’s auditorium as she performed from 2:15 – 3:30 p.m. Students and staff were still dancing after the final bell! Tamara Beach - Cycle 1 ERC Teacher

Pearson School Board will be present to help answer any questions that may arise. A small number of people are still questioning the need for a new school in the area. While the overall LBPSB enrollment has declined, the need for additional classroom spaces in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges area remains very real. For the 2010/2011 school year four kindergarten classes from Forest Hill Junior will be relocated to available space in Hudson at Mt Pleasant. Four groups of elementary cycle 3 students will be relocated from Pierre E Trudeau School to available space in Westwood Junior High School. The portable classrooms remain in place at Pierre E Trudeau School. Several of our schools are using spaces within their buildings for students and classes, even though those spaces are not meant for that purpose. In our presentation to the Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC and the towns of St-Lazare and Vaudreuil-Dorion we clearly demonstrated that we are in need for about 20 classrooms – the size of a regular elementary school. The need is real and urgent. We hope there will be no more delays in the acquisition of land. Marcus Tabachnick - Chairman of the Board

PACC FUNDRAISER

INTERNATIONAL PRE-K STUDENTS WELCOME THE CHINESE NEW YEAR Students in the International Pre-Kindergarten program held a parade in honour of the Chinese New Year. The three and four-year-old students prepared lanterns, tiger masks (to commemorate this year being the year of the tiger) and songs to sing in front of the International Language Centre’s administrators, parents, invited guests and their teachers. The parade and mini-concert took place on February 12th.

In a spirit of solidarity with the victims of the earthquake in Haiti, the students of PACC, located in LaSalle, decided on January 19, 2010, to organize an unsolicited fundraiser to help the survivors. Four students went from classroom to classroom between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and

were able to collect $551.80; this sum was remitted to the Red Cross. Student’s names from left to right: Michel Ismachowiez Mamber, Ivor Horsham, Majid Malekzadeh, Baldev Padam

OP SMILE SUCCESS! Chief Warrant Officer Joe Nunez and his colleagues, in a follow-up to their autumn visits, returned to Clearpoint, Beacon Hill and St Paul schools to collect a total of $1800 for OP SMILE, the project he initiated to collect money to buy books for a war torn multi-ethnic school in Bosnia. Clearpoint raised money with a Crazy Hat Day, a lunchtime computer lab activity run by teacher Nadia Bruzzese, and a raffle of a gingerbread house

sponsored by the integration aids. Beacon Hill staff contributed proceeds from their Christmas auction while their students had a Dress-down Day. St Paul teacher Christine Donald, with the grade 6 classes, organized a school wide sale of clementines. This is the final OP SMILE campaign as our soldiers are being recalled from Bosnia; CWO Nunez expressed his gratitude and deep appreciation that it should end on such a high

note due to the generosity and support of our staffs and students for this very worthy cause. Linda Choinière - Spiritual Animator

LLOYD BARKER AT SUNSHINE ACADEMY

ST. PATRICK ELEMENTARY GETS ITS VERY OWN SKATING RINK Thanks to their principal, Jad Deegan, the students at St. Patrick Elementary in Pincourt have their very own skating rink. Mr. Deegan has used his weekends to make this rink in part of the school yard and the students even skate during their gym period.

On February 9th, 2010 former Impact Soccer player Lloyd Barker visited Sunshine Academy to speak to Cycles 2 and 3 students. He shared some of his personal experiences growing up in Jamaica. He talked about how being raised with very little has

made him realize the importance of sharing with others and given him an appreciation for all that he has. He implored the students not to take for granted the benefits they enjoy. He stressed the importance of hard work and staying in school.

VOCATIONAL TEACHER PED DAY The adult and vocational train-ing department organized a professional development day for vocational training teachers which was held at Pearson Electrotechnology centre in Lachine on February 8th. The theme of the day was “Yes, you can…reach them all!” The theme was chosen to draw attention to the sometimes difficult issues that teachers face in their practice and how best to support their students. Gloria Keenan and Viviane Croubalian greeted the

approximately 125 teachers in attendance. The day started with a power point presentation celebrating the incredible growth of the department and the contribution it makes to the success of LBPSB students. The morning was organized in workshops with themes revolving around mental health issues, technology to engage the students, classroom management and best practices. Many of the workshop animators were colleagues of our department willing to share

their own experience and expertise. In the afternoon, the teachers participated in a large group discussion with a panel of experts. The guest panelists included: Cindy Finn, Director of Student Services LBPSB, Darlene Flynn, social worker representing the CSSS, Sebastien Boudine from Carrefour Jeunesse Emploi and Madeleine Barrette guidance counselor at PACC. This forum allowed our teachers to solicit concrete strategies from the

MAC HIGH AT CHÂTEAU VAUDREUIL PEARSON NEWS

ST. LAWRENCE JUNIOR STUDENTS SUPPORT OUR SOLDIERS

On Wednesday, February 10th, 21 Macdonald High School students, under the supervision of their teacher Ms. Binet, were invited by the Quebec Federation of Home and School Associations to help with a "Reach for the Torch" mini-Olympics. The event was held at the Château Vaudreuil and was attended by 250 elementary students. The Macdonald High Leadership class organized and supervised outdoor games and had the privilege of meeting Olympian

and award-winning freestyle mogul skier Stéphanie St-Pierre. Great fun was had by all and of course, our students were exceptional leaders! Good job Mac High! Susan Tuff - Macdonald High School Community Office Coordinator

As part of the Remembrance Day ceremonies the staff and students at St. Lawrence launched a “Project Afghanistan” throughout the school, with the goal of helping our Canadian Soldiers help the children of Afghanistan. The whole school participated in the project by bringing in various school supplies as well as toys and games that the Afghanistan children could use. During the kick off assembly for Project Afghanistan the students saw a slide presentation that included pictures of Afghanistan Schools, children playing and Canadian soldiers helping the children. One

of the soldiers in many of the pictures, Tyler, had special meaning to our school because he is related to 2 staff members at St. Lawrence. The Project ended on December 10th with a visit from two soldiers from the Black Watch of Canada to accept more than 15 boxes of supplies. What made it more significant to the students was that one of the visiting soldiers was Tyler. He had just finished his second tour of duty in Afghani-stan and during the assembly he gave us first hand stories about the many children he had met and their life in Afghanistan.

It was a remarkable experience for the students and an opportunity for them to give to others in the true spirit of generosity. Sheila Honeyborne - Principal of St. Lawrence Academy Junior Campus

JOY IN JANUARY AT ST. PAUL!

The St Paul community enjoyed a January treat in the form of the production of the musical Grease. Teachers Natalie Maurice, Claudia Guzman and Jessica Dalicandro began collaborating in September to stage this play with our two Grade 6 classes. They devoted many hours to teaching our students the intricacies of acting, singing, dancing and choreography. The

pictures tell the story of the result: a totally joyful, thoroughly professional and completely resounding success! Congratulations and thanks to our very talented students and directors. Linda Choinière - Spiritual Animator
