2 February 2014

Meet your BVDC Officers & Directors! Each month we will introduce one or two of the current BVDC Officers/Directors in the newsletter so that you can get to

know the people who are representing you!

Jessica Axelsson - Director 2013—2014

I started driving for Beverly (Carr) Morgan when she owned the Cape May Carriage Company. I was in high school and had been riding for about seven years. I found driving much more enjoyable than riding. Years later I found myself in the driving class of the equine program at Delaware Valley College where I met a great mentor and friend, my instructor, Audrey Bostwick. Over the years I have continued to expand my driving experiences with everything from minis to Percherons, singles up through an eight horse hitch team. I joined BVDC, not sure of the year, to be able to participate in a super volunteer clinic! It was great fun and I can still remember meeting many of you that day! Currently I have a small pony who I show at pleasure shows when I am not judging or coaching students! Jessica ([email protected])

BVDC Novice Driver Clinic with Lore Homer At Chapter One Farms, Pedricktown, NJ

Saturday, March 22nd

This popular clinic is offered by long-time club member Lore Homer who is an expert whip, recognized judge and very effective instructor. Many current whips have had an excellent start with Lore in past clinics, learning the basics and acquiring the techniques and confidence to safely work with a horse. This clinic is open to new drivers, but some experience is necessary. Auditors are welcome also. You may bring your horse or pony for harness fitting and carriage fitting. You may also bring your horse in hand (halter) or in long lines, if this is where you are with your training. The group will be divided according to horse size to make the environment safer for all. Lore will spend time with each driver and answer any questions the participants may have.

Horses and ponies: Must be able to work in a group situation and stand quietly

with others Must be broke to the cart or carriage Harness and carriage must be in good working condition

The Driver: Must have and use a whip and gloves Must had at least 4 hours of qualified driving training Have knowledge of harness, Hitching and safety factors

Helmet is required for driver and all passengers/grooms.

This clinic is for the inexperienced driver who wants to build some confidence and experience in being with a group of other drivers and being evaluated for appropriate turn-out, correct harnessing, and “way of going” in a low stress environment.

The clinic will be held inside at Chapter One Farms’ indoor arena. For directions go to: wwwc.chapteronefarms.com/directions. Drivers need to bring and use muck buckets. Water is available. Bring a chair! Release form is available

at http://www.bvdc.org/BVDCRelease.pdf. Lesson times will be determined and communicated after the deadline

when we know how many people will be attending.

See next page for registration form - deadline to register is Saturday 3/15. Questions? Debby Donovan (856-981-1868 or [email protected])

This month’s report shows that there are still 78 members from 2013 who have not yet renewed.

The ADS Booth at the PA Horse Expo is a go for its second year so it’s time to start recruiting volunteers. The show is at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, February 27-March 2, 2014, the schedule is: Thursday 12:00-8:00, Friday 10-8, Saturday 9-8, Sunday 9-5. Late morning through the afternoons is usually the busiest time. We had a very successful year in its first one and things are even better this year. We've managed to group Carriage Machine Shop, Nolt's Wheels, Yoni's Harness and the ADS booth in a row of 7 booths near the round

pen, food concession and bathrooms! Carriage related booths have the whole row except for one space, Carriage Row as it were. We also have demonstration time every day. It's an exciting time to be involved with even more growth in the future. If you plan to go to the Expo and could give us some time as a

volunteer to man the booth we would be thrilled. We will pay for your admission into the Farm Show Complex. It’s a great experience to meet people who are interested in starting to drive and help them out. We are looking for enthusiastic drivers who are outgoing and willing to promote the ADS and driving in general. If you can give us a hand, contact Anne Councill, [email protected], 717 993 8956 or 717 880 3840. Thank You! Anne Councill Horse World Expo offers the Best of the Best in the horse industry. Curing Canker: The Cinderella Story of Rosie

Thought to be a guaranteed death sentence, if caught early enough and treated diligently, canker is treatable and curable.

by Carolyn Crew

When Rosie was diagnosed with canker in all four hooves, only one thing saved her life: compassion. The beautiful white Morgan-Percheron was part of a beloved team of horses owned by David F. Cressman of

Ironton Livery and Coach, a specialty horse-drawn carriage

service in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She and her striking

lookalike sister, Lisa, provided elegant carriage rides to many

brides whose dream was to be Cinderella for a day.

When Cressman died without leaving provisions for his

horses, the livery lost its driving force. The eight horses who

once offered a wonderful day ride through the heart of the

community were now languishing in their stalls with an

unknown future. Then, a special friend stepped in to help.

FAIRY GODMOTHER Though there are no glass slippers or handsome princes in

Rosie’s story, hers does have a few horse shoes, a whole team of

“fairy godmothers” and a very happy ending.

Cressman was a mentor to Karen Schell, a sales manager

for Mane ‘n Tails horse products whose passion for horses exudes

in both her career and her hobby as a carriage driver. It was he

who taught and encouraged her to drive and it was she who

came to the rescue when his horses needed a new future.

While helping to place most of Cressman’s fleet in new

homes, Schell also took on the role of fairy godmother to Rosie,

putting together an incredible team of vets, neighbors, farriers

and friends to help Rosie overcome the debilitating and often

fatal disease of hoof canker.

Why take on such a daunting responsibility? “It was the

right thing to do,” said Schell. I did it for my friend, my mentor and for

the love of horses.”

CANKER’S CURSE Canker is a fairly rare and mysterious infection that affects the frog, heel and underlying structures of the hoof. It is

generally described as a degenerative dermatitis whereby the lamella becomes swollen, soft and spongy, resembling

rotten cauliflower. The bacteria associated with canker cause abnormal keratin production, or overgrowth of the horn.

Left untreated, the disease underruns the entire sole and can even travel up underneath the walls.

Due to the difficulty and length of time taken to treat canker, the disease is generally considered incurable, a

death sentence. However, if the disease is discovered before the foot has suffered extensive damage, the prognosis is

favorable and curable. Because canker was present in all four hooves, Rosie’s case was severe. Due to the fact that

canker infected the very inner parts of her hooves, recovery would take several long months. Knowing that the cost of

Rosie’s surgery and recovery would become a deal breaker to successfully treating her, Schell found a good friend who

was kind enough to donate whatever was necessary to help save her.

SUPPORT TEAM

With Rosie, time was of the essence. With instincts on full-throttle, Schell was taking in details and nuances of Rosie’s

condition, at the same time shouldering the responsibility of finding new homes for all of Cressman’s horses. With Rosie

in such serious condition, Schell first consulted her vet, Dr. Edgar Balliet, who brought in Dr. Randy Bimes of

Quakertown Veterinary clinic, and who has had much success treating horses with canker.

“Canker can be treated very successfully in many cases if you have the support of the people caring for the

horse and the funds to do so,” says Dr. Bimes. “It can be expensive and time consuming, but the success rate is high

if you have the right people involved who understand the importance of post-op care.”

Rosie began her healing journey with a trip to Quakertown

Veterinary clinic in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. Surgical removal of the

diseased material and cankerous growth needed to be performed. Drs. Bimes

and Balliet placed her under general anesthesia and carefully debrided the

affected tissue, being careful not to draw blood and drive the infection deeper

into the tissue. Systemically, there is no medicine that will cure canker if

superficial debridement is not performed.

With surgery over, the real work began. Rosie spent 21 days at the

hospital before being taken home to Schell’s farm where the rest of her team

pulled together to nurse her back to health for more than two months.

“Success or failure has very little to do with the initial surgery and a

whole lot to do with how the after care and minor follow-up surgeries go,”

says Bimes. “The post-op care can be long, time consuming and frustrating.

It takes a real team effort and the appropriate facility to manage the

recovery.”

LONG, SLOW REHAB Schell’s farrier, Eric Frick, spent many hours helping and teaching Rosie’s

nursing team how to pick up her hooves safely. For a very large draft breed

who had suffered trauma in all four hooves, she was at times uncooperative

and reluctant to comply. This task was imperative to accomplish and had to

be accomplished daily. Neighbors Wendy and Wayne Walls stopped in every

day to help with her care. Treatment had to be applied, packed on and

bandaged firmly to each hoof, several times a day.

Rosie’s post-op protocol began with a methodical antiseptic cleaning

program. Emphasis was placed on keeping the surgical wound clean and dry

until the defect began to cornify. As a knowledgeable product specialist

within her company, Schell used Mane ‘n Tail’s Pro-Tect topical

antimicrobial spray as her first line of defense. Pro-Tect is used to kill a wide range of microorganisms including

bacteria, yeast, mold, fungi and viruses. After treating the infection, Schell applied No Thrush to help absorb and

dry the excess moisture in the hoof and Keratex Hoof Hardener to help harden the hoof tissue and make it resistant

to softening and weakening in wet conditions.

To aid Rosie’s own natural renewal process, she was given Standard Process’s Equine Immune Support to

encourage an optimal immune response and Stemtech’s StemEquine Advanced Formula, an all-natural stem cell

enhancer whose primary role is to maintain and repair tissue, an important aspect in maintaining health.

“It took a lot of due diligence to help Rosie recover,” says Schell. “Her stall had to be kept clean and dry and

as sterile as possible. It took a lot of hard work.”

Optimum body health was important to healing, says Schell. A good diet high in protein and low in starches,

lots of movement and a positive state of mind are all important. While working full time and caring for her own

horses, Schell made sure Rosie was cared for, groomed and pampered. She used Dr. Pat Bona’s cross fiber grooming

technique to help Rosie feel more comfortable and to keep her muscles and joints supple.

The multi-faceted approach halted the more minor cases of canker in Rosie’s hind feet. Unfortunately, the

severe canker in her front feet was resistant. Dr. Bimes had to sedate her on the farm and performed several

debridements during her recovery.

WHY ROSIE? There is no answer as to why Rosie developed canker. Because the disease involves a very strict anaerobic process,

and seems to have multi-factorial pathogenesis, the true cause of canker is unknown. It is widely thought of as an

(Continued from page 11)

RECOGNIZING SYMPTOMS

OF CANKER

Early stages of canker are often mistaken for thrush that simply won't go away. The frog is often undermined

with the horny frog covering the bulk of the disease. The affected tissue will

bleed easily when abraded and may be extremely painful when touched.

Canker has a very foul smell and secretes a lot of pus from the affected areas.

Horses will often stamp their feet due to the discomfort.

Fragments of crusted-over hoof horn grow excessively at the back of the frog.

In extreme cases, as the canker takes hold, a cauliflower-like growth will appear in the affected areas of frog and heel.

By this stage, horses will often also have swollen fetlocks and be reluctant to stand or move on their feet.

Page 13: February 2014 · BVDC Gen’l Meeting - ADS Rules Overview - Judge’s Roundtable - 3/1 Novice Driver Clinic - 3/22 New BVDC Cones Performance Award Program Recreational Pleasure

external infection but horses with systemic or constitutional upset are more susceptible. While it isn’t breed specific,

canker seems to occur more frequently in Drafts.

Speculation suggests that horses kept in a wet environment or moist unhygienic conditions may be more

susceptible, but most vets agree that canker is not prejudicial. Farms with the best stable management, as well as those

with the worst, can have horses with canker, suggesting that the horse’s individual immune system and health history

are major factors. In Rosie’s case, she was stalled in the same conditions as seven other horses on the farm yet was the

only one to develop canker.

Thanks to her fairy godmother, Karen Schell, and her team of friends, neighbors, farriers and doctors (plus one

generous anonymous donor), Rosie is living happily ever after. She lives the princess lifestyle, with her new owners

Billy and Paula Klein, on a beautiful 17 acre private estate in New Tripoli, Pa. where she enjoys a large stall next to

her sister and their own private 2 acre pasture for grazing. Her carriage won’t be turning into a pumpkin any time

soon.

Where will your horses end up if something should happen to you

unexpectedly???

Have you planned out who will take care of your horses?

Do you know who will find good homes for your beloved equines?

Your plan for your horses can start with something as simple as asking a good

friend to take on this responsibility. Or it could be more formal by engaging the

services of an attorney to incorporate the plan in your will, to ensure that

adequate financial resources are allocated for the care of your horses until new

homes can be found for them.

A schedule was setup for each Board member’s turn to submit their article/photo to Debby for the newsletter. Membership Committee: Cutoff date for renewing to get into printed directory: Jan 30th. After January 31st, as per Bobbi Hager, you will show up in the directory but not as "active" member. Bobbi sent out emails Jan 6th to members from 2011, 2012, 2013 who have not renewed. Will send out paper renewal reminder & forms as a big push/tickling campaign, for membership renewal. A one time only thing. Approx. $80.00 for mailings. We discussed cutoffs for other membership benefits for late renewals—we decided not to cut off the Trot & Track or Volunteer Incentive Programs. Equipment Committee: Pat Kozakowski declined to continue as the chair of this committee, so we need a replacement. At the last meeting, Pat suggested that tires on trailer look dry rotted. She will look into new tires in the spring; we will also want to purchase new tire covers at that time.

Clinics Committee: Novice Driver Clinic—As reported in the last newsletter, this has been scheduled for 3/22 and will be coordinated by Helene. Anne Hearn volunteered to help with this clinic. Hazard/Navigator Clinic— Tim & Judy Canavan have offered to be the clinicians for this. Probably will be held at Chapter One Farms with indoor arena. Date is still being worked out. Other Clinics—Anne suggested a long-lining clinic with Ann Rawle as the clinician. Anne will ask Ann Rawle if she is willing to do a clinic for us on long-lining and also possibly a Driven Dressage Fix-a-Test clinic. If Ann Rawle agrees, Anne Hearn will help to coordinate. Competitions/ Show Committee: We need a chairperson for this committee. Summer Schooling Pleasure Show— Jane Oehler wants to get a committee going for this show which will be held at Buxmont again this year. Becky Pendlebury volunteered to be on committee. Continuous Drive Event— Luanne Riddle offered to hold the drive again at the Riddle's Canvasback Farm on Memorial Day weekend (Sunday). Camilla Hansen volunteered to be the Organizer/Secretary for this show. Competitive Trail Drive: Debby would like to see this happen again in 2014 as it went over very well last year, but we need an organizer. Recreational (Pleasure) Driving Committee: Fun Day at the Hunts— The Hunts have offered to host this again in 2014. Merrill Walters will not be organizing again this year so we need someone to step up to do this. Anne Hearn volunteered to help at drive. Fair Hill Pleasure Drive: Zana to contact possibly Mark Lawlor to see if he will facilitate a pleasure drive at Fair Hill in the spring. April or May? Spring Drive hosted by the Martin’s—The Martin’s have hosted a fall drive for the past 2 years but have also offered to host a spring drive this year. We need to get a date for this on the calendar. Hospitality Committee: Kathy Kozak will create a check list of supplies needed for meetings. This will also help us know who is storing the refreshment supplies (like coffee pots, etc.) so we know where to get them from when needed for a meeting. Kathy will coordinate light refreshments for the March general membership meeting. ADS Representative: Jessica Axelsson will keep Heidi Ferguson updated with the BVDC event calendar so our activities can be added to the Mid-Atlantic Regional calendar. Sunshine Committee: Kathy Kozak sent cards to Merrill Walters and Cindy Vollers. Old Business: Suzy Stafford Recognition—In recognition and appreciation of Suzy’s contributions to the club (summer cones clinics and hazard clinics) we are creating an annual Cones Performance Award. Details will be published in the next newsletter. Gail Aumiller has drafted up a form and will document the instructions for it. Members who want to be considered for the award will be responsible to fill out their own paper work and keep track of their own points. Camilla Hansen volunteered to be the points secretary for this. Deadline for forms to be handed in by participants will be mid-November. Shows from Nov 1st thru end of Oct will be counted towards the end of year award. The award will be announced and presented at annual holiday party. New Business: Debby Donovan gave overview of responsibility for Board of Directors positions. Volunteer Incentive Program (BVDC Bucks) - Pat Kozakowski has resigned as secretary to record hours/send out bucks, so we

need a volunteer to take this over. We have add’l vacancies that need to be filled (does not have to be a Board member):

Show committee Equipment committee Rec/pleasure drive committee Volunteer secretary
