Wildlife seems to find us here. Now lots of people can say that, but some of our encounters, like the one we had last Friday, seem to be pretty unique. Sitting at the desk, I saw a brown bird land on the porch out of the corner of my eye. I discretely snuck a photo with my phone, fearing it may fly, but it remained so I retrieved my DSLR and began a bird photoshoot from our side porch door’s window. After watching the sleeping bird for a minute, I realized it was a tiny owl.

After doing a quick Google search, we discovered our teensy new friend was a Northern Saw-Whet Owl. After mentioning the sighting to a couple of experienced island birders, both fortunately were

able to drop what they were doing and head over to our house to observe the bird. Both birders had heard a saw-whet before but confessed to never actually seeing this relatively common, but elusive, bird. Sur-prisingly many experienced birders never see this bird, but do hear them as they are around deep in the woods, but probably due to their size they remain quite hidden throughout the day and aren’t exactly a normal sight.

The bird had decided to roost on a snow shovel that had been left on the porch, but after some door knob jiggling to get it to wake up and turn around to face us for a good photo op, it flew into the trees. We

thought that would be the last we’d see of this little owl, but less than ten minutes later it came back, this time to roost on the handle of our wheelbarrow next to the porch, where it decided to sleep for the remainder of the day. An odd place for sure and we’re not quite certain why it chose to sleep there and not in the trees, but maybe it had just found itself a comfortable spot to hang out and was tuckered out from hunting. It wasn’t even startled when we came outside and started up the car and pulled out of the driveway – twice! When we returned in the evening, the owl had gone, and we were partly relieved because we didn’t want a sick owl on our hands, which many thought maybe it had struck the window (it hadn’t) or had some other sickness or injury because of its odd choice to sit so close to the house. We haven’t seen it since, but it’s so tiny it’s easy to miss or mistake for another bird sitting in the evergreens.

Last year we got the chance to see the glorious snowy owl from our living room ad this year we got the cute little saw-whet from our dining room. Maybe next year a great grey owl from our bedroom? All these owls but still no letters from Hogwarts. Next week there will be information on the owl itself in the “Creature Feature”.
