!EAPCESpring Event May 5-7, 2014

In recent years, brain science has amplified our understanding of what Paul and Calvin already intuited. Singing calls upon musical and kinesthetic as well as verbal intelligences, and thereby encodes texts in multiple places in our brains. Hence, song lyrics are often the last things we remember as our memories fade with age. Many of us could tell stories of parents or grandparents, suffering from dementia, who can no longer recall the names of their spouses or children, but can still sing – word for word – the hymns they learned as children.

Modern studies of musical intelligence thus join forces with Paul and Calvin to raise a number of key questions. What indelible memories are we shaping through the texts we sing in our churches? What is our repertoire of “hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs” teaching us about what to believe and how to act as persons of faith? How is the word of Christ coming to “dwell in us richly” as melodies enable it to penetrate our hearts?

In this series of lectures, we will explore the rich array of musical and textual resources available through the new hymnal of the Presbyterian Church (USA), Glory to God, seeking to discern what and how congregational singing teaches us about theology, the Bible, pastoral care, and prophetic witness. Each talk will offer opportunities for singing as well as practical suggestions for integrating songs into worship and religious education.

Music and Message:

Learning the Word(s) by Heart

What Congregational Singing Teaches Us about Theology, the

Bible, Pastoral Care, and Prophetic Witness

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Mary Louise (Mel) Bringle is a Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Brevard College in Brevard, NC. Her Ph.D. in Theological Studies is from Emory University. An award-winning hymn writer whose original texts and translations appear in the hymnals of numerous denominations in North America and Scotland, she has recently served as President of The Hymn Society in the US and Canada and as chair of the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song. She is a ruling elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, NC.

Paul knew that singing plays an integral role in religious education. He exhorted the Colossians: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” as you “teach and admonish one another in all wisdom” and “with gratitude in your hearts, sing hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs to God” (Col 3:16).

John Calvin similarly appreciated the pedagogical value of song. In a preface to the Genevan Psalter of 1542, he acknowledged, “Music has a sacred and almost incredible power to move hearts.” Like “wine poured through a funnel,” sung words can penetrate us more deeply than words that are merely spoken. For this reason, Calvin continued, “We ought to be even more diligent in regulating [what we sing] in such a way that it shall be useful to us and in no way pernicious.” Or, more positively put, we ought to be even more deliberate in exploring the ways that musical intelligence enables us to learn God’s word by heart.

Workshops*Early Bird Workshops - Monday 1:30 pmFor those who have arrived, checked-in and are raring to go, here is new opportunity to squeeze in another workshop if you would like; or simply spend the time catching up with friends, recovering from the drive, checking out the books, etc.

1) Playing Together There is something about playing games together that connects and unites people.  As we play together in this workshop, we will learn and play games that build community and can be used in ministry across the generations.  led by Susan Sharp Campbell

2)Theology of Children’s Music Deep and Wide, Kumba Ya, Jesus Loves Me, Rise and Shine - What do these and other songs we learned as children have to say about our theology and faith? We will discuss their relevance in our childhood and in our lives today. led by Beth Williams

Tuesday Morning 10:30 am3.   “Need to Knows”

for New Church Educators led by Educator of the Year, Debbie Hough

If you find yourself in the position of “I Said ‘Yes,’ Now What Do I Do?” then come and join in this workshop. The discussion will focus on both theory and hands-on concepts for those educators who are just starting or are relatively new to the position of Director of Christian Education. Together, we will explore available resources to help you get started. 4. Beyond “Jesus Loves Me”: When the musician has the flu and it’s all on YOU! led by Mary OdinYou don’t have to be a trained musician to lead God’s children in song, but you do need a few good ideas and the confidence to lead with joy. This hands-on workshop will give you practical musical ideas for use in emergencies and creative ways to customize lessons for different age groups and situations. Musical experience is welcome but not required.

5. Adult Education for Newbies, Skeptics, and Saints led by Candace Hill

Imagine designing adult education and faith formation using the waters of baptism as a metaphor. Consider the spectrum—walking  barely wet, causing a ripple effect, treading water, swimming for shore. How can congregations nurture new believers? What can we offer those who eagerly serve? Is there a place for doubters to wrestle with faith? How can we continuously equip mature adults to thrive and to strive? Come and explore denominational curricula and tools for nurturing disciples, wherever they emerge from the waters of baptism—even those who consider themselves bone dry..6. Three Planners and a Project

led by Susan Thompson and Eric Myers

An artist, educator, and musician converged to bring their congregation church-year projects that were meaningful, all-aged, and transformational (when least expected).  Planning teams are essential for integrating art, education, and music.   You will see hands-on projects and receive seasonal ideas that worked in worship and education spaces and get tips on how to start collaborating.
