• A few months into His public life

• Was in Jerusalem for “A” Feast where He healed on the Sabbath day

• Severely criticized by the Jews for working…Note Old Law: Ex 31:14 14 'You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for

it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. 15 'Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. cf. Jer. 17:19-27; Neh. 13:15-19

• Disciples plucked (husked) grain on the Sabbath(Mat. 12:1-8; Mk. 2:23-28; Luke 6:1-5)


Luke 6:1-5 Disciples Plucking Grain

1 Now it happened on the second Sabbath after the first that He went through the grain fields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate them, rubbing them in their hands. 2 And some of the Pharisees said to them, "Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?“ 3 But Jesus answering them said, "Have you not even read this, what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 "how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?“ 5 And He said to them, "The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.“


Jews: “Work” Problems on the Sabbath

Law• No Work• No travel more than 2,000 cubits (~.6 of a mile or 1k)

(Inferred: Ex. 16:29 Manna, Num. 35:5; Josh. 3:4)

Opinion of the Jews:• Jesus healed and the Jews considered it “work”• Disciples picked grain and husked it – work

Jewish Tradition Says Jews could not:• Pick lint off clothes • Carry a needle in one’s clothes• Wear, carry a crutch or wooden leg• Wear a broach


Jesus: Recorded Healings on the Sabbath

• Healing Demoniac in Synagogue (Mk. 1:21-28; Luke 4:31-37)

• Cripple man at the Pool of Bethesda (John 5:1-47)

• Man w/Withered Hand in Synagogue (Mat. 12:9-14; Mk. 3:1-6; Luke 6:6-11)

• Man Born Blind, Spittle, Pool of Siloam (Jn. 9:1-38)

• Infirmed Woman in Parea, (Luke 13:10-13

• Man w/dropsy, house of a Pharisee (Luke 14:1-14)


Sabbath Day Problems for the Jews

• John 7:22-23 22 "Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 "If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?

• Lu 13:15 The Lord then answered him and said, "Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it?

• Lu 14:5 5 Then He answered them, saying, "Which of you, having a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?"


Disciples and Grain in the Fields

• It was lawful to Pick/Eat Grain (Deut. 23:25)• Sabbath “harvesting” was prohibited (Ex. 4:21)• What did the “revered” David do? (1 Sam. 21:1-6)

Ate replaced Tabernacle bread, (Note: Jesus did not say it was okay)

• Within the intent of the Law to do Good (Isa. 58:6-7; Lk. 6:6-11, 13:10-17, 14:1-6)

• Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath (Mk. 2:28, et al) (the expression used 81 times by Jesus)


Lessons From “Grain” Event

• Be careful, Traditions can– Disallow and be right or wrong – Allow and be right or wrong right

• Let the word of God rule, using logic and common sense

• Traditions can be born of scripture or of men:– 2 Thess. 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the

traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

– Col. 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

– Mark 7:9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

Following Jesus

Will lead to heaven; was not & will not be popular– He did not have the expected background– Followed the Scriptures– Forgave sins– Disciples: Not wash hands, plucked grain on S.– Associated with “wrong” people (S. woman at

well, Levi, house of Simon)– Forgave a woman taken in adultery– Disappointed the Sign Seekers – Gave “faith” credit to the un-popular (Gentiles)– Made Himself equal with God


Healing the Man with the Withered Hand

Mat. 12:10-14; Mark 3:1-6; Luke 6:6-11• Pharisees looking to trap Him, asked is it lawful…• Jesus knew their thoughts• Jesus: can we do good or evil; save life or destroy

it? Which should be done on the Sabbath? If the sheep falls in the pit can you get it out?

• Could/would not answer - Jesus became angry• Jesus healed the man in their midst• Pharisees were furious, plotted His death


Mark 3:1-6 Healing the Man with Withered Hand

1 And He entered the synagogue again, and a man was there who had a withered hand. 2 So they watched Him closely, whether He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. 3 And He said to the man who had the withered hand, "Step forward.“ 4 Then He said to them, "Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they kept silent. 5 And when He had looked around at them with anger, being grieved by the hardness of their hearts, He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored as whole as the other. 6 Then the Pharisees went out and immediately plotted with the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him.


Jesus Became Angry; Mark 3:5

• Because their hearts were hardened, Jesus became angry

• We are taught not to become angry– Titus 1:7 Be not soon angry (elders)– Eph. 4:26 Be angry – sin not; let not the sun…– Eph. 4:31 Let all … *anger… be put away…– Col. 3:8 …put off all *anger…

• Yet Jesus was *angry and did not sin
