S uffering is inevitable in life. Each religion has to deal with this as a fact. The maximal intensity of suffering is death. In the face of suffering, man is powerless and he tries to find meaning to it. In Christianity, the attitude towards suffering is quite basic and definitive. It is the suffering of Christ that gives meaning to our sufferings. Christ has come as the redeemer and the conqueror of suffering and of death. He does not limit His healing mission to the physical sufferings alone, but seeks to heal the whole person. The inner healing of the person and the forgiveness of sins is the mission of Jesus. God intervenes in human situation to alleviate suffering, yet He permits suffering to take place. Sufferings often motivate people to seek God, and as they draw closer to Him they can understand Him better. In the first reading we have Job, that legendary model of long-suffering patience, is speaking of the tiresomeness of life. He complains of the hardships he had to experience in life in the face of sudden disasters. He gives expression to the pain and sorrow he is facing. He is unable to see the happiness that lies in store for him. In the second reading, Paul speaks of the obligation imposed on him to preach the Word of God, making himself the slave of the Gospel. Yet he does this task willingly and freely without looking for any reward. The Gospel gives the vivid picture of healing

The suffering of Christ that gives meaning to our sufferings ministry of Jesus and His popularity as everyone was searching for Him. But He chooses to go to other places to continue His ministry of preaching and healing. In the midst of His heavy work of teaching and healing He spends His time in prayer. Messages for life

• Suffering in all its forms will continue to afflict us as long as we live in this world. Sickness is one the many bitter fruits that sin brought about.

• Christians get sick just as non-Christians do. During His preaching Jesus healed many sick people, but He did not altogether take away sickness from the world.

• He helped us to understand that sickness patiently borne can yield a precious fruit: it is meant to bring human beings closer to God. God bestows His love on the sick in a particular way. Sickness helps us on our way to heaven and we can help many others to be saved when bearing with it for God’s love

• All Christian communities should hasten to render help to the sick in our midst whether Catholics or non- Catholics. In so doing they follow Jesus’ example, and non-Christians to faith in Christ.

• Suffering of any kind is like a golden coin Christ requests from us on loan; we should not grudge it to Him. He will hasten to repay it.

Z Biurka Ojca Jerzego

Tajemnica Mszy Świętej C złowiek dzisiejszy traci mnóstwo czasu. Tracimy czas dojeżdżając daleko

do pracy, tracimy wiele czasu przed telewizorem i komputerem. Chrystus powiada: Bierzcie i jedzcie. Chrystus odwrotnie, ciagle obdarza, nieustannie daje siebie samego. Taka jest tajemnica Jego Ofiary.

Page 6: February 4, 2018 The Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time St ...S uffering is inevitable in life. Each religion has to deal with this as a fact. The maximal intensity of suffering is death.

This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in install-ments.

The ACA theme, “Come, Follow Me” was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus’ call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by provid-ing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God’s love with many oth-ers in our Parish and our Archdiocese.

Each pledge makes a difference because all Par-ishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Ash Wednesday Announcement

This year, the largely secular celebration of Valentine's Day (February 14) coincides with Ash Wednesday and some have inquired if a dispensation from the obligations to fast and abstain from meat will be given.

Catholics throughout the world recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of a period of prayerful reflection and penance, as is evident by the large number of church goers on this day. In view of the significance of Ash Wednesday the obliga-tion of fast and abstinence must naturally be the priority in the Catholic community. Valentine's Day can appropri-ately be celebrated the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which also happens to be Mardi Gras, a traditionally fes-tive time before beginning our Lenten observance.

Tax season is here and Tuesday, April 17th is the deadline to file you income tax return. If you have not received your yearly contribution statement from St. Joseph the Worker, please contact the parish of-fice at (847) 537-2740 immediately. Thank you.

Scripture Series at St. Mary Catholic Bible 101: Overview of the Old Testament

Presented by Fr. Matthew Alexander

February 17, 24 and March 3, 10, 17, 24 9:00 - 10:30 a.m.

St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish 22333 W. Erhart Rd in Mundelein

Sacred Scripture retells the greatest love story in all of human history. Each and every one of us is integrally caught up in the grace of that beautiful story of salvation. In this six-week se-ries, Fr. Matt, Associate Pastor at St. Mary, will examine the beginning of the story of salvation and present an overview of the Old Testament by diving deeper into the Scriptural ac-counts of God’s covenants with humanity and the Jewish peo-ple. Each covenant of the Old Testament anticipates and fore-tells of the Eucharistic Covenant that Jesus Christ extends to His Church today. No previous study of Scripture is required; rather, come with a heart that desires to more deeply encoun-ter the Word of God. For more information visit www.stmaryfc.org or call the parish office 847-223-0010.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We’re reading St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians these days. What was Corinth like? It had a beautiful setting on an isthmus, about fifty miles from Athens. The location makes for very easy exchange by sea routes between Greece and Italy, a factor in its economic success even today. In Paul’s day it was a cosmopolitan and wealthy city with inhabitants drawn from all over the world, including a sizeable Jew-ish community. When Paul arrived about the year 50, the city was only about a century old, but already five times the size of Athens. Paul lived in Corinth for a year and a half, and a few years later came back for three months. The community of Christians there struggled against the influence of a very secular and self-indulgent society that was blind to the plight of the poor. Pagan attitudes afflicted the com-munity, which had a way of breaking Paul’s heart; he wrote to them sometimes “with many tears” (2 Corinthians 2:4). Today, Corinth is a small industrial city. Its historic core has been destroyed by a series of earthquakes over the centuries, and what little remained was totally obliterated in a war with Turkey in the 1820s. There’s a core city with glamorous shops to catch the tourists, but it is mainly a cargo port, with piles of marble, tiles, and minerals every-where, a huge oil refinery nearby, a busy canal, a modern fast rail line to Athens, and a meeting point of major highways. Today, the remains of the Temple of Apollo and the marketplace are more ruined than most such sites. The glory of the city Paul knew well has faded, but the relevance of his words shines through the centuries. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The stories we’ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today’s ac-count shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don’t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world.
