February 23, 2015 Millarville Community School 130 Millarville Road 403-938-7832 http://millarville.fsd38.ab.ca Principal’s Message On February 13, the grade two class treated the school to a tall tale written by the class that involved the class rescuing me from a hole created by a falling meteor impact on the playground! They presented with enthusiasm and provided a good laugh for the whole school. It is days like this that educators enjoy most; when classes work together towards a goal and are proud and enthusiastic to share what they have accomplished together. Thank-you grade two!! The month of March is already setting up to be a busy one with trips, guest speakers, student led conferences and the Spring Round-up. The Spring Round-up (March 19 th ) is a major initiative conducted by our teaching staff and fundraising society that is sure to be a huge amount of fun. We are currently looking to source donations for items for our silent auction and basket raffle. If you have anything to donate, or would like to prepare a basket, please let the office know ASAP. One exciting set of items already being prepared for the silent auction is the class quilts from the graduating classes of 2014 and 2015! Please help spread the word to last year’s graduates and their families. Before the break, all students were provided with a fundraising package for the Heart and Stroke Foundations’ Jump Rope for heart. As an initiative to give back to charity while engaging the students in a fun activity, we hope to raise $500 from MCS to donate to this worthy cause. Did you know, that in 2013, the Heart and Stroke Foundation donated over $38 million directly into the hands of heart and stroke researchers across Canada and that all funds donated in Alberta go toward Alberta researchers and initiatives? Every dollar does make a difference! MILLARVILLE AND DISTRICT

RECREATION BOARD

The Millarville and District Recreation Board is accepting applications for funding for non-profit organizations for the coming year. Each year the board receives a grant from the Municipal District of Foothills No. 31 and disperses the funds to deserving groups. If you would like to apply for a grant, please send a letter stating your request along with a budget for 2015 and a financial statement for 2014, to Box 59, Millarville, Alberta T0L 1K0. In previous years funding has been provided to the Millarville Sports Association, Millarville Community Library, Millarville Community School, Oilfields High School, West End Band Program, various 4-H groups and individuals in sports and dance who have competed at a national or international level. The deadline for applications is March 15

th. For further

information please contact Norma Dawson at 403-931-3580. We are always looking for new community members to sit on our board, so if you are interested please give Norma a call.

MILLARVILLE COMMUNITY LIBRARY The Annual General Meeting of the library will take place on Tuesday, March 3

rd at 3:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to

attend and we are looking for new people to sit on our board. The average age of our board members is getting up there and we need some new younger blood to revitalize our library and make us more in tune with new technology. Many of our daily volunteers go south in the winter and we may have to cut back our hours if everyone goes away at the same time. Right now we have sixteen regular volunteers and four spares which usually means we can stay open over thirty hours each week. If your children are in the school, maybe you could find a half day each week or every other week where you could volunteer. It is a fun place to work and you do not need any previous library experience – we will train you! If you are interested, please call the library at 403-931-3919

Alberta Health Services

Deep freeze temperatures and sheets of ice may not inspire feelings of safety and comfort. Most of us have known someone - if not ourselves - who has fallen and been seriously injured on ice. In fact, from April 2013 - March 2014, injuries caused by falls on ice and/or snow accounted for 16,910 visits to Alberta Emergency Departments. But, this doesn't mean that hibernating is the safer bet. Quite the opposite: being sedentary contributes to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and unhealthy weight gain. This winter, Alberta Health Services is encouraging all Albertans to leave the hibernating to the bears, and to take a cue from some web-footed friends instead . . . Enjoy the winter wonderland safely by learning the penguin walk! Watch a great new short Penguin Walk animation from AHS (featuring our penguin friends) at www.penguinwalk.ca Help us spread the word:

- post a link to www.penguinwalk.ca on your school website. - download and share the video, or find quick bullet point tips, at www.penguinwalk.ca. - Spread the word on social media and show Alberta how your family or school is doing the penguin walk, using #penguinwalk.
