February 23, 2020 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time FOOLISHNESS Sometimes the idea of repentance seems old-fashioned, naïve, even foolish. But if you’re looking for real foolishness, you’ ll find it in today’s readings. We begin with Leviticus and the admonition, “Take no revenge and cherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve heard that message before, of course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-called “practical realities of life.” Saint Paul warns us about being practical, though. Whoever considers oneself wise had better “become a fool,” because “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God” (1 Corinthians 3:18, 19).This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no resistance to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact, offer the other cheek when you’ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your shirt. Be like God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as the good. “So be perfect,” says Jesus, “just as your heavenly Father is perfect” (5:48). SACRED HEART PARISH MISSION STATEMENT We are a diverse, multi-cultural Roman Catholic Parish. Relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we endeavor to build the kingdom of God through liturgy, prayer, education and outreach to those in need. We come together as a faith community to celebrate life’s joys and sorrows and minister to all who come to us. Prayers for Strength and Healing If you wish to add someone to the prayer concerns for the sick, please gain permission from the patient before calling the Parish Office. Thank you. No wonder the Eastern Rite’s “Lenten Announcement” sounds surprising: “Let us receive with joy, O faithful people, and the divinely inspired announcement of Lent! The Lenten Spring shines forth! Begin the fast with joy! Let us fast from passions as well as food, taking pleasure in the good works of the Spirit, and accomplishing them in love!” Saint John Chrysostom, whose feast is September 13, elaborates: “Do you fast? Give proof by your works. If you see a poor person, take pity. An enemy, be reconciled. A friend gaining honor, don’t be jealous.” A positive approach! May the saints help us keep such a Lent! is September 13, elaborates: “Do you fast? Give proof by your

works. If you see a poor person, take pity. An enemy, be

reconciled. A friend gaining honor, don’t be jealous.” A positive

approach! May the saints help us keep such a Lent!

Future of Mercy High School Meeting

The Catholic Schools Department is

holding a Town Hall meeting to announce

the decision about the future of Mercy

High School in Red Bluff on March 5th at

7:00 PM, in the gym at Mercy. Everyone is

invited to attend.

40 Days for Life and Baby Bottles!

Lent is fast approaching (Ash Wednesday

is Feb.26) and that means that the spring

session of 40 Days for Life will begin. It

goes from Feb.26 through April 5 this

year. Also, that is when our parish

participates in the LifeNet Baby Bottle

Drive. The Sacred Heart Respect Life

Ministry members will be handing out

baby bottles after all the Masses on the

weekend of Feb. 29/Mar.1, so be looking

for them! What a great way to sacrifice

for Lent and help LifeNet Pregnancy

Center meet their needs as they help those

who find themselves with an unexpected

pregnancy.

Today we join together through

the Annual Catholic Appeal

We may not all be social workers, yet

through the Annual Catholic Appeal, the

whole Catholic community leans in to help

our Catholic charities…and our own

parish…providing support to programs and

ministries that help lift our neighbors and

friends out of poverty. The Annual

Catholic Appeal is dedicated solely to the

social mission of the Church here in

Northern California. Last year, 261,000

people were helped through Appeal-

funded charitable works. Please be as

generous as you can. Every gift makes a

profound difference in someone’s life.

Mardi Gras

Knights of Columbus' 9th Annual Fat

Tuesday (Mardi Gras) is February 25th, 4

to 7 pm, in the Parish Hall. Pulled pork

sandwich dinner includes coleslaw, fries,

and bread pudding. Tickets are $9 and are

available at the Parish Office. (Mardi

Gras/Fat Tuesday reflects the practice of

the last night of eating richer, fatty foods

before the fasting that begins on Ash

Wednesday, February 26th.)

Father Keith Canterbury

Father Keith E. Canterbury, a beloved

priest of the Diocese of Sacramento for

more than 25 years and who served for

12 years as pastor of St. Patrick Parish

in Weaverville, died on Feb. 16. He

was 90.Bishop Jaime Soto will preside

at a funeral Mass for Father Canterbury

on Friday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. at St.

Joseph Church, located at 2040 Walnut

Ave. in Redding. A reception will

follow the Mass. A vigil service will be

held on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. at

St. Joseph Church in Redding. A

celebration of life, including a potluck

lunch, will be held at the Veteran’s

Memorial Hall in Weaverville on

Saturday, March 7 at 11 a.m.

MAKE THIS LENT ABOUT WHAT

YOU DO, NOT WHAT YOU

DON’T DO! During the coming Lenten season,

instead of depriving yourself of some

type of food or some form of

entertainment, join a small group for

six weeks and participate in Live Lent,

an opportunity to read Scripture and

share your faith with some of your

fellow parishioners. Candy Harman is

hosting a group on Mondays starting

March 2 at the Parish Hall in Davids

Room at 6:45. We will meet for 90

minutes once a week for 6 weeks. The

faith-sharing also provides meditations

for you to use on the other days of

Lent. It’s a great way to make Lent a

more meaningful season as you prepare

to celebrate the resurrection. For more

information call Candy Harman at 527-

1458 home or 961-3186 cell.

Pancake Breakfast

The next Knights of Columbus Parish

Pancake Breakfast, "First Sunday of the

Month," is March 1st from 8:30 am to

Noon in the Parish Hall.

Parish St Patrick’s Dinner is Sunday

March 15. Details and tickets March

1st!

Let’s practice good health habits to help prevent the spread of all illnesses by:

Washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Avoid touching our eyes, nose and mouth. Avoid close contact with people who are sick Stay home when sick. This includes staying home from work,

school, errands and travel. Cover a cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the

trash. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. Refrain from shaking hands as a greeting and holding hands

during the Our Father prayer in Mass. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, drink lots of fluids and eat

nutritious food.

alcohol.

• Evite tocar nuestros ojos, nariz y boca.

alimentos nutritivos.
