Royals GM reflects on the season as the team prepares for playoffs.By Jennifer Blyth

Aft er a gruelling six-game road trip, the Victoria Royals are looking forward to a home game-heavy fi nish to regular season play, with nine of their remaining 14 games played at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

And with one of the league’s

best home game win records, the boys in blue will be aiming to capitalize, with their sights set fi rmly on earning a berth into the WHL playoff s.

It’s been a long road, but players, coaches and staff are all looking forward to the next step in the 2012-13 season, beginning with this weekend’s back-to-back games against the Kelowna Rockets.

“It feels like it’s been a whirl-wind but it’s been great,” GM Cam Hope refl ects on his fi rst season in the Capital Region.

“We approached it at the start of the year as a building year,” he says, pointing to the four 16-year-olds who have all been great throughout the sea-son, and the several 17-year-olds they’ve been able to add to the mix.

All of which means that while the team may be on the young-er end of the WHL spectrum this year, the players’ demon-strated skill and commitment bode well for the future.

“Our expectations were that we would be a playoff team,” Hope notes, pointing out that even with the team’s challeng-ing six-game roadtrip, the Roy-als were still standing at 10 games over the 500 mark.

While the team may be in tough against some of the top powerhouse teams, like the Ed-monton Oil Kings and Portland

Winterhawks, “we can match up well with anybody.”

Hope attributes the players’ success to two main factors: “Th ey’ve come to believe in our coaches and they’ve bought into our system.”

Not to mention hard work and tenacity.

“At one time we had six reg-ular players out of the lineup and we were still fi nding ways to win,” Hope says, but points out that there’s still much work to be done.

“I think how things go in the next two weeks will be just as important as what has hap-pened in the fi rst four months,” Hope says, commending both the coaching staff and play-ers for their commitment and perseverance throughout the season.

Th at hard work will need to continue for the team to stretch its sophomore-year success into the post season, and the Royals would like the fans to play their part as well.

“I’m new to Victoria and I’m very impressed with the fans. I had expected it to be good but I didn’t expect it to be as good as it is,” Hope notes.

“Th e fans who have been to the games know how exciting it is. We had 19 home wins – one of the best home records in the Western Hockey League – and that’s not an accident!”

Th e Western Hockey League will use a Con-ference playoff format this year, with the fi rst-place teams in the two divisions in each con-ference receiving the top two playoff seeds.

Th e next six clubs in each conference, based on regular season points, will receive the third to eighth playoff positions, with fi rst playing eighth, second playing seventh, etc. in best-of-seven series.

Th e four teams in each conference advanc-ing to the second round will be ranked in or-der of regular season points, with fi rst playing fourth and second playing third in a best-of-seven series. Th e two winning clubs advance to the best-of-seven WHL Conference Champi-onships. Th e Eastern and Western Conference Champions will then advance to the best-of-seven WHL Championship Series.

The Royals are gearing up for a strong finish to regular season play and a berth in the finals.

Th e Victoria Royals players, staff and fans will be showing their appreciation for the hard work and sacrifi ces of local military members during the sec-ond annual Military Appreciation Night Feb. 23.

In addition to terrifi c hockey as the team takes on the Kelowna Rockets, special features include interactive displays in the concourse, a 50/50 draw hosted by the Military Family Resource Centre, and the always fun Chuck-A-Puck benefi tting area Cadets.

A highlight of the night is sure to be the oppor-tunity to bid on game-worn jerseys right off the players’ backs in a live jersey auction following the game. (See more about this on the back page)

Th e Victoria Royals have forged a strong con-nection with local military members, visiting the base earlier this year for a fun game.

“CFB Esquimalt is excited to have been invited to be honoured and recognized during the Victo-ria Royals hockey game on Feb. 23,” says Capt. (N) Bob Auchterlonie, Commander, CFB Esquimalt. “Events like this highlight the strong relationship between the local defence team and the com-munity. Th e Victoria Royals and the base have a strong history of working together, including their support of our annual charitable campaign hockey challenge and on-going CF Appreciation events.”

For Royals with a military connection, the night is extra special.

A veteran of last year’s inaugural event, 6’5” Roy-als defenceman Keegan Kanzig takes the opportu-nity to refl ect on the work of his grandfather, who served in Germany in the 1950s as a member of the Queen’s Own Rifl es.

“I think it’s really important – it’s good to show your appreciation for what these men and women do. Th ey put everything on the line for us and that’s something that can’t be forgotten,” Kanzig says.

Th e event is a particularly special night on the calendar for assistant coach Ben Cooper, whose family tree boasts numerous military members. His great-grandfather was a brigadier general who served in the Boer War, and both the First and Sec-ond World Wars.

With their exciting on-ice play and winning ways – not to mention fan fa-vourite Marty the Marmot – the Vic-toria Royals have made sure that home game seats have remained one of the hottest tickets in town this winter.

While details are still being con-fi rmed for playoff s, single-game tick-ets for the Royals’ remaining regular season home games range from $12 to $27, with some package options also available.

For more information, including group ticket details, visit the Select Your Tickets Box Offi ce at www.se-lectyourtickets.com/vicwhl, e-mail [email protected] or call 250-220-7889.

His grandfather, who lost two brothers in the Second World War, also served his country in the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He was part of the historic D-Day land-ing on the beaches of Normandy, and today has a street named aft er him in Holland aft er participating in that country’s liberation.

Even Cooper’s father played a role in the confl ict, surviving in a German Prisoner of War camp following ser-vice in North Africa.

More than 60 years on, the sacrifi ces the Canadian military members make each and every day are just as appreci-ated.

“Th e work they do is incredibly important and probably doesn’t get enough recognition,” Cooper says.

Th e atmosphere at the Save-on-Foods Arena promises to be exciting Saturday night, he notes, recalling last year’s inaugural event,

when the arena was fi lled with military members and their families and members repelled from the ceiling to the ice for thrilling puck drop.

“It’s really special because I personally have a strong connection. It takes me back and makes me refl ect about all the sacrifi ces they made,” Cooper says.

It also serves to highlight the eff orts of today’s service members.

“How can you not support the night, with all they do?”

Keegan Kanzig looks forward to his second Canadian Forces Appreciation Night this Saturday.

The Victoria Royals look forward to honouring local military members and their families Saturday.

At CFB Esquimalt earlier this season, Honourary Captain (N) Cedric Steele drops the puck for Base Commander Capt. (N) Bob Auchterlonie and Royals Ryan Gagnon and Brandon Fushimi.
