February 21, 2016 Second Sunday of Lent The Transfiguration Today we read how Jesus reveals his glory to his disciples on the mountain. The choice to use this particular gospel reading seems out of place in the middle of Lent. This comes from an ancient Christian tradition that held that the Transfiguration took place forty days before Good Friday. What a difference a day makes! Recently we had bitter cold weather, than really warm temperatures, along with wind, snow and rain. It must be getting close to spring. Soon the farmers will begin moving equipment and working the soil to begin planting the early crops. There is a purple flowering plant called “Henbit” that I think is beautiful, but apparently it is a nuisance that farmers must deal with. In any case it is a persistent and difficult to remove plant. Apparently, even if it the plant is destroyed the seeds can lie dormant in the soil to grow again. They die to rise another day, just as we die to self and rise to new life in Christ daily and in the final Resurrection. The little things we set aside for Lent, and in our daily conversion to personal holiness, free the soul to burst forth and produce much fruit. We too must prepare the soil of our hearts so that, when the seed of the Word of God is planted it will take root, grow and produce much spiritual fruit. Soon we will celebrate the glories of the Resurrection, but first, we must follow Jesus in his suffering and death. May the grace of God, present in the sacraments, strengthen and sustain us through these Forty Days of Lent. Fr. Second Sunday of Lent The Transfiguration

Today we read how Jesus reveals his glory to his disciples on the mountain. The choice to use this particular gospel reading seems out of place in the middle of Lent.
