February 2020 Volume 14, Issue 2
Dear CCU 'Ohana,
My name is Rachel Jacobson, and I am a freshly installed Elder of the
CCU Congregation. Since I will be writing the monthly bulletin for Pastor
Liz while she is away, I thought I’d take the opportunity to introduce
myself. I was born and raised in Southern California and I first came to
Oahu for college. I majored in Early Childhood Education at the University
of Hawaii at Manoa and have worked with children for many years. UH is
where I met my husband of 11 years, and we are fortunate enough to
have a daughter, Eliana, who is 3 years old.
My Christian journey began soon after I was born. My parents attended
various non-denominational churches where as a child I loved attending
Sunday School every week, and as an adolescent found solace in the
Youth Group Ministry. These early experiences instilled in me the
importance of God’s love and sharing it with others, but it was also a very
limited scope of how broad God’s love can be.
As an adult I began to actively seek out a more inclusive congregation,
and was fortunate to become a member of a United Methodist Church in
California where I was welcomed and encouraged by a wonderful group of
people. I was also recruited by the Children’s Ministry director to be the
Sunday School teacher for the elementary aged kids. My biggest take
away from being a part of this congregation was how to show God’s love
through action.
When we moved back to Hawaii two years ago I was so lucky to have
found CCU. I enjoy the thought-provoking sermons of Pastor Liz and other
guest speakers that help me to look at scripture in a new way. I am
grateful for the time we have as a community during communion and the
lanai coffee hour every Sunday. I am so appreciative of the nursery my
daughter can play in and make friends, and look forward to hearing about
what she has learned in Keiki Church when she is older. Above all, what I
love most about CCU is our call to action to lift up our communities near
and far and to be stewards to the Lord’s creation. I am honored to be
given the opportunity to be an Elder and look forward to contributing to the
CCU 'Ohana.

Meet your Deacons...At our December Congregational meeting three members were elected to join
Marian Heidel as Deacons: Dianne Brookins, Catherine Sophian, and Paul
Brennan. Actually, they have already been acting like Deacons; the congregation
just made it official! Before Pastor Liz started her maternity leave, we met to discuss
what it means to be a Deacon, and proceeded to get organized. While being more
connected is always a good thing, we were especially mindful of that need looking
toward the temporary absence of our pastor. We divided the congregation fairly
equally amongst the four Deacons. If you have not yet been contacted by your
assigned Deacon, you will be soon. You can also identify your Deacon by contacting
the Office. You don’t need to be an official member of CCU to be assigned a
Deacon. We will be contacting you periodically, and checking in to see how you are
doing. If you need help or have something you want to talk about; something to
celebrate; need to share news, or a concern about someone in the congregation,
give your Deacon a call.
In addition, (the Rev.) Paul Brennan will be available, while Pastor Liz is out on
maternity leave, to do hospital visitation, or assist in a crisis.
Please contact your legislators TODAY to urge them to pass aLiving Wage bill (gradual increase to $17/hour by 2024) in2020!!

you're their constituentYou're a member of Faith Action for Community Equityyou support raising Hawaii's minimum wage to a living wage of $17an hour
2020 February Ka Elele Aloha Page 6 of 10
A bill for $13 an hour (by 2024) is NOT ENOUGH for Hawaii'sworkers
Spread the word! Ask your friends and family to contact theirlegislators about the need for a living wage in Hawaii.
