TIDEWATER PLANTATION COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION 1 President’s Message Cathy Weis, BOD President Hopefully you are enjoying the cooler weather and remembering how lucky we are not to be shoveling snow! Enjoy our pleasant winter. We were notified by the city of North Myrtle Beach (NMB) that they are not responsible for picking up cardboard waste from our waste center at the Amenity Center because the cardboard waste is the responsibility of Horry County. Therefore we have installed a new cardboard waste container in the parking lot at the Amenity Center for the Horry County pick-up. Please be sure to flatten your cardboard boxes when using this waste container and be sure to dispose of your plastic and glass in the other appropriately marked containers. This area is not a place for disposal of large items like mattresses and furniture. You may call NMB at 843-280-5500 to arrange for pick-up of such items. Speaking of recycling, here are a few requirements for your home recycling. Please do not put your recycling items in plastic bags. Please dump only recycled items in the re-cycle bin for pick up by NMB and do not line your recycle container with a plastic bag, only paper bags will work. So far, the city officials have advised that there are no biodegradable or other type of plastic bags that are acceptable. Also, be sure to empty and rinse your jars and cans of all food debris. Pizza boxes tend to be an issue, so unless they are completely clean do not recycle them. Also, do not crush plastic bottles or cans. As a reference, these hints for recycling were also included in your recent NMB water bill. Items like paints and oils must be taken to the re-cycle center on Hwy 90 near Conway (not the center on Hwy 90 in Little River). Due to a recent incident with our beach Cabana elevator when a resident and her mother were trapped and had to be released by the fire department, we have discovered that a faulty part causes the elevator to work sporadically. Due to the risks, we have chosen to discontinue use of the elevator. It was already in our plan to replace this elevator with a new one in 2020; however, the urgency is now elevated. We are looking into hiring an engineer, a contractor and an elevator company; however, that coordination and the necessary permits will take some time. Every effort will be made to get this done before beach season, but if we find this cannot be completed in time, we may have to start in the fall after beach season. We request your patience during this inconvenience. You may recall that two often-requested projects mentioned in our Needs Assessment survey of this past spring, were the need for a larger Amenity Center and some requests for an enclosed, year-round pool, known as a natatorium. We hired an architect who has presented us with a plan for each and their estimated costs. We plan to survey owners regarding their opinion of these projects and their impact on assessments. Look for an email from management containing this survey. If you don’t receive email blasts, contact our Property Management office for your email address to be added to the community email list so that you can receive this important survey and other community notifications. They can be reached at 843-663-3500. Also, if you do not have an email address or a computer, you may contact the Property Management staff and they will complete your survey for you. While this is not a vote, but a solicitation of your opinion, it is important that we hear from as many of you as possible so that the Board can make a decision that is preferred by the majority of home owners. Additionally, we plan to hold a Town Hall meeting to present the plans and answer questions. Trimming of all the tree canopies on all Tidewater roadways should have begun in late January.. It is a Fire Department requirement to have the canopies high enough so that their 13 foot trucks have ease of passage. We will be trimming all the trees to be at least 15 feet above the road. Again, I hope you can get out and about and enjoy the cooler weather. President’s Message Cathy Weis, BOD President

Hopefully you are enjoying the cooler weather and remembering how lucky we are not to be shoveling snow! Enjoy our pleasant winter.

Property Management MessageChelsa Fenner, CMCA, AMS, Community Manager

Spring is right around the corner, meaning that many are getting ready for spring cleaning and exterior maintenance. The moist atmosphere that comes along with being near the water can cause mold, mildew and algae on the exterior surfaces of your home. Therefore, it is recommended that you inspect your house to determine if any power washing/cleaning is necessary.

The refurbishment of your mulch or other ground cover in the landscape beds makes a noticeable improvement on the aesthetic appearance of the landscaping. It is requested that the mulch or ground cover be refreshed in the spring and fall each year, as needed. Please consider contacting your landscaper to have this work arranged for the spring.

Please note that the vegetation on vacant lots should not exceed 24” in height. Depending on the growth season you may have to clean your vacant lot 2-3 times per year.

Due to the abundance of residents that recycle cardboard, the Association had a cardboard dumpster installed in the Amenity Center parking lot. This is in addition to, and does not replace, the regular recycle pick-up at single family homes by North Myrtle Beach on Tuesdays. When using the newly installed TPCA cardboard recycle bin, please remember to flatten all boxes and cut down large-size boxes to maximize space when you recycle your cardboard boxes, corrugated cardboard boxes and boxboard (such as shoe boxes, gift boxes, and snack and cereal boxes). Please DO NOT put the following in the container: wet/muddy cardboard, food waste and regular garbage, packaging such as plastic bags, shrink-wrap, styrofoam, or other recyclables such as paper, cans and bottles. If you have bulky items for pickup, please call 843-280-5500 to schedule pickup for these items.

I also want to remind you that the speed limit within the community is 20 MPH. Please respect this speed limit and drive safely.

We hope that everyone had a great start to the New Year, and if you are new to our communities, welcome. Winter is still in full swing, so be sure that you are being proactive with preventative issues. We are having a warmer winter than normal, but the cold does swing in fast, and most of the time, completely unexpected. If you will be leaving for a trip, regardless of the length of time, please make sure that you keep the heat on inside your unit set to the recommended 60 degrees. Setting the HVAC at this temperature helps prevent the water pipes from freezing in your unit. If your unit is empty, you should also turn off the water by closing the valve where the water enters your unit. If a water line breaks, closing this valve will help limit the amount of damage from a broken line.

If your ceiling fan has a reverse switch, use it to run the fan’s blades in a clockwise direction after you turn on your heat. The fan will produce an updraft and push heated air down into the rooms from the ceiling (remember that hot air rises). This is especially helpful in rooms with high ceilings, and it might even allow you to turn down your thermostat by a degree or two for greater energy savings. Remember to replace the HVAC filters EVERY 45-60 days. Clogged filters can inhibit the operation of the system and cause costly repairs, while heavily impacting the air quality within your unit. Clean the registers throughout the unit and clear obstacles from the vents so air can flow freely and you will not only see better air flow, but you will be conserving energy as well.

There is a very important tip to be aware of in 2020, and it is, surprisingly, not to abbreviate the date as normal. Because the last two digits of the date “20” are also the first two digits of the current century, writing just “20” allows people to modify the date backwards or forward with a great deal of ease. This is dangerous when it comes to checks, as the dates can easily change to earlier ones, leading to much more prominent instances of fraud. An example of this would be a lender whose dates of a payment cycle are set to begin on 1/1/20, the borrower could easily change the 1/1/20 to 1/1/21, extending a full year before payment is due. Please be cautious with this issue, as it can be such a simple hack for unscrupulous scam artists.

We have seen a good response to updating information with our office over the past year, and we really appreciate and encourage everyone to continue to update us as needed. You will see this reminder over the next few months, and if you do not receive email blasts to all homeowners with special announcements, contact the office to update. In addition, if you have changed your mailing address, email address or phone number, please let Derek know. It is always good to periodically check in to make sure all contact information is up to date and accurate. Derek can be contacted at [email protected] and 843-663-3500.

Teal Lake VillageTeal Lake Village is nearing completion of the staircase replacement project, and we appreciate everyone being helpful with scheduling and for your feedback as well. You will notice that the staircases are not painted as yet, since they are made of treated lumber and need time to cure. The building painting schedule will resume this year and will follow the normal rotation over the next 5 years. We will have a large window order coming in soon and wood repair will continue throughout the year as well.

Although cold weather, wind, and rain can affect the Spectrum signal, please reach out with any questions you may have. You can reach out to [email protected], or call the office at 843- 663-3500. Most signal outage questions can be resolved over the phone and typically with just the push of a few buttons. A good tip to remember is that if your screen is blank or reads “no signal,” your television input may need to be changed back to the correct selection. Most remote controls will have an input or source button that you can press repeatedly, or use the directional up and down buttons to change. Do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or recommendations for any situation.

The next Board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 30 at 3 PM in the Cassels Building. Please come out and join us if possible.

Pest Control is set for Tuesday, April 28. (Please reach out to the office if you run into issues between visits.)

Heron Lake VillasHeron Lake Villas is going to have a productive 2020, and you will see this reflected in various projects throughout the year. The step tread painting will be completed soon and we will move into the spring plantings and landscaping updates. Please reach out with any questions or concerns that you may run into and thank you for all of the feedback and assistance throughout the past year.

Please be mindful that we are still in the coldest range of months, so be sure that you are setting your heat to no less than the recommended 60 degrees. I realize that this is a constant recurring theme throughout communications in the winter months, and although a small step, it is an extremely important task to keep in mind. Make sure that you are protecting yourself and your neighbors from freezing pipes. Along with this, it is recommended to have HVAC units and water heaters inspected and maintained. Water is an issue that can cause major repair and replacement, along with

Lighthouse Point VillasLighthouse Point Villas has made some major improvements over 2019, and will continue to move forward throughout 2020. You will notice that the rock border has been extended to the back and sides of the buildings, providing additional fire prevention throughout the community. Pine straw was added around the property and wood and roof repairs have been completed as well.

Please be sure that you complete the smoking survey and return it to either [email protected] or to the office. This is another important step in protecting Lighthouse Point Villas from possible fire scenarios, easily prevented with the implementation of this ban. We thank everyone for your feedback and for your help in keeping Lighthouse Point Villas a safe and beautiful community that everyone is proud to be a part of.

Please be sure that you are updating your information so that you are able to receive email blasts, as this will be key to communication for projects in 2020. Due to the weather, the walkway sealing is taking much longer than anticipated; therefore the roofer skipped ahead to building 59 and replaced the roof AC racks and made necessary repairs to the flat roof. The work was completed within one day without having to remove the AC units from the roof. Additionally, to expedite the work, the Association took on the responsibility for the disconnect and reconnect of the AC units. We will circle back to building 58 and anticipate the work to be done sometime between February and March.

The walkway sealing on building 58 was completed after weather related delays. The goal is to complete the remaining buildings by April. Notifications will be emailed to homeowners (mailed if you do not have email) for each building when the contractor is ready to start. Please review our correspondence and adhere to the notice when received. As noted before, homeowners will have access to

Notice of the work will be done in advance so that residents can plan accordingly. Also, the cleaning solution used to prepare the walkways has a very powerful odor, and residents will be asked to keep their doors and windows closed while the work is being done. The next building will be 59.

If you have never received one of these emails, please contact Chelsa Fenner at [email protected], or by phone at 843-663-3500 to make sure she has your correct email address.

Calling on residents who would like to serve on the Recreation Committee - The Recreation Committee needs to replenish our waiting list for residents who would like to serve on this committee. Duties involve planning and assisting with monthly events and special events (Summer Concerts, Happy Hours, St. Patrick’s Day Party, Ride ‘N Dine, Boat Trips) to name a few! New ideas for events and ways to improve existing events are discussed and agreed upon by the committee. Committee members must be full-time residents because there are meetings once a month (the first Monday of the month). Both men and women are encouraged to respond. Anyone interested should send an email to [email protected] and include a brief description of any previous experience working on a committee, and reasons for their interest. Respondents will be placed on a waiting list until openings becomes available.

If you have ideas for additional activities you would like the Recreation Committee to entertain, please submit them by email to

[email protected] . We value your input!

Reservation Procedure:Please read below to sign up for an event

Artisans of Tidewater Marilyn Drange

Watercolor WorkshopNothing looks more cheerful than a warm, bright flower painting! And when you painted it, it’s even more special. Join Marylou Convery and paint coneflowers in watercolor using different colors, different amounts of wetness, and letting water do most of the work!

The workshop is on Monday, February 17 at the Amenity Center starting at 12:30PM, and the class fee is $10. Please RSVP Marylou by Monday, February 17 at [email protected]. This simple painting lets your creativity run free with your own artistic touches.

February 24th - Rolled Paper Art ClassTurn your old magazines into beautiful pieces of art – learn how at the Monday, February 24 Artisan’s Workshop, to be led by Denise Altman. “Magazine pages are full of color,” says Altman, “and that color makes beautiful art pieces.”

All materials will be supplied for a class fee of $10. The class will run from 1- 3PM. Email [email protected] or call Denise at 704-315-9090 if you’d like to attend.

Craft ChatBy Denise Altman

A new tradition begins at Tidewater! On the FIRST MONDAY of each month, you’re invited to come over to the Amenity Center from 1- 3PM and bring whatever craft you’re working on. We’ll enjoy each other’s company while we work on our projects. It will be fun to see what others are doing while we visit. No sign-up is required, but email [email protected] if you want to be on the list to receive a reminder each month. Hope to see you there on Monday, February 3.

Artisan ShowcaseMarilyn Drange

The February Artisan of the Month is Bill Woodward. Bill and his wife have lived in Tidewater since 1993. Bill is the photographer for On The Beach and On The Greens Magazines. This gives him a reason to be out and about with a camera. A lot of his shots are just interesting sights that he’s noticed along the way. See Bill’s exhibit during the month of February in the lobby of the Tidewater Grille Clubhouse.

Tidewater Charity Tournament CommitteeJohn Mouco, Tournament Chairperson

I have had some new Tidewater Residents asking,”What is Wheel Night?”

Wheel Night is a fundraiser event sponsored by TCTC (Tidewater Charity Tournament Committee) on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Tidewater Grille. We support 4 charities that provide disabled and fallen veterans’ families with basic needs: housing, dental care and scholarships. Last year, with the support of Tidewater residents and sponsors, we donated $50,000 to those charities.

For a $5 donation, you have 3 chances to spin the wheel to win prizes. Prizes consist of rounds of golf at Tidewater (with or without carts), $50 gift card, other gift cards, 50/50 tickets, Ball Drop tickets, wine, one pick of the table and mystery prizes.

We have a jackpot drawing that increases by $25 each month. The January drawing was up to $1300.00!!

To be eligible for the Jackpot Drawing:

• You must have a Players Card or be an AUF member.

• You must participate in the Wheel Night activities. Spin the wheel or purchase either a 50/50 or Ball Drop ticket AND partake of the buffet.

No Exceptions. If your name is drawn and you do not have a meal ticket receipt, you will not win!

The Grille puts out a delicious buffet and it is a great way to enjoy the company of your friends while supporting a great cause.

Tidewater Ladies Bridge BrunchLinnea Knecht

On Monday, December 9, Kathy Turnauer hosted our 11th Annual Bridge Brunch. The Ladies enjoyed a wonderful meal featuring Kathy’s signature Shrimp and Grits and many other goodies cooked and baked by members of the group. Rather than giving each other gifts, we collected $183 which went to Backpack Buddies. Thanks to Kathy for hosting us. As in years past, the number of bridge players continues to grow, as we continue to challenge our minds each week.

PickleballCaroline Clark

Come play Pickleball with your neighbors! A group of Tidewater residents meet on the hard courts on Saturdays and Sundays at 9AM and Thursdays at 3PM. Please join us for a fun time! For more information, please contact Ali Kittredge at 860-841-1771 or Caroline Clark at 843-273-0094 or [email protected].

Coffee Charity EventBob Alexander

Matthew Alexander, the 8 year old son of Amy & Bob Alexander of Harbor Loft, has set up a charity to benefit Catholic nuns from India who are assigned to Matt’s local school, Holy Trinity Catholic School (HTCS). These young nuns are educators who donate their earnings to their village in India. Matt’s idea was to operate a Saturday morning Coffee Bar. A Virginian coffee bean roaster prepared Matt’s Harbor Loft Blend which was used to make the coffee. Visitors to Matt’s Coffee Bar were treated to a cup of coffee or hot chocolate plus an 8 oz. package of “Matt’s Harbor Loft Blend”. Thus far Matt has raised $150 which was presented to the Nuns at HTCS. The Harbor Loft residents enjoyed the project and supported Matt’s charitable work.

Matt will be holding another charity event called “Matt’s Coffee Bar for Charity” on Saturday, February 22. It will be held at 1643 Harbor Drive from 9AM -12PM. There will be coffee, hot chocolate and sweets for sale. All proceeds will be donated to the nun educators from India working at HTCS. Please join us and enjoy some great coffee!

If you have questions, please call Matt’s Mom or Dad: Amy Alexander 540-295-4652 or Bob Alexander 540-845-9499.
