The Episcopal Church delights in archaic and

obscure titles and terms. A church can’t have a porch, it has to be a Narthex, what everyone else calls a sanctuary, we call a Nave, and clergy can be rectors, curates, canons, archdeacons, deans, or vicars. It helps us tell the tourists from the natives,

like knowing the difference between Byoo-fort (SC) and Bow-fort (NC). The season we are observing now is one such obscurity. Epiphany comes from the Greek verb επιφαίνειν, to reveal. The season begins with the Day of Epiphany, when we remember the visit of the 3 Kings, and the revealing of Christ to the Gentiles. This ushers in a season of variable length which runs from January 6 until Shrove Tuesday. There are many “revealing's” which take place throughout the season: Christ revealed as son of God at his baptism, the call of his disciples on the seashore, revealing himself as master and teacher, and the Transfiguration, the revelation to Peter, James and John on the mountain.

This is a good season for us to reflect not just on how Jesus is revealed in the scriptures, but also how he is revealed in our own lives. At his visitation the bishop preached about the light shining in the darkness and the many ways we can show that light. But for many of us, it is easy to think that we are revealing Jesus on Sunday morning, but harder on the other six mornings in the week. Perhaps we feel some embarrassment about appearing too religious, or, more likely, we just get caught up in the busy-ness of everyday life and forget. For the first objection, it’s good to remember that Jesus spoke more about kindness, forgiveness, and looking out for the neglected than he did about using ‘God talk.’ For the other, let me suggest one of the great spiritual technologies available to us now, the Post-It note. Write the word Forgive or Listen on one of those little pastel squares and put it on your dashboard, or refrigerator or computer monitor, and remember that our actions speak far more than our words.

FROM OUR CURATE

Last month at our community interfaith worship service

honoring the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. King, I was so energized when, though not in the bulletin so perhaps unplanned, we sang, with gusto, Lift

Every Voice and Sing (“Sing a song full of faith that the dark past has taught us; sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us. Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, let us march on till victory is won!”). Earlier that morning, at our Sunday worship here at St. Andrew’s, our final processional was equally stirring, “Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?” (Will you go where you don’t know and

never be the same? Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known, will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?) And so in a day, unplanned and obviously uncoordinated, we’d sung 2 of the 4 songs sung at my ordination.

Last month we were also able to host the Right Rev. Rob Skirving, our bishop, for a baptism and many confirmations—what a morning of celebration! As I worked with our youth confirmands to prepare for the big day, we read through parts of the catechism in the back of our Book of Common Prayer and were reminded of the ministry of the laity: to represent Christ and his Church; to bear witness to him wherever they may be; and, according to the gifts given them, to carry on Christ's work of reconciliation in the world; and to take their place in the life, worship, and governance of the Church (BCP p. 855). It’s not only in ordination, it’s not only on special days that we are, each of us, in our own ways, called to lift our voices, to follow, to let God’s love be shown.

How do you carry out the ministry of the laity? How are you marching on? How are you letting God’s love be grown? And, I wonder, if you were to pick your own anthems for your ministry—what hymn calls most loudly to you?

St. James Parish, located downtown, is pleased

to invite individuals of all faiths to attend, Seculosity: How Career, Parenting, Technology, Food, Politics, and Romance Became Our New Religion and What To Do About It as presented by David Zahl. The event will take place on Tuesday, February 4 at 7:00 p.m. at St. James (25 S. 3rd Street) in the Great Hall.

According to Zahl, Americans may be going to church less, but we’re more religious than ever. At the heart of our current moment lies a universal yearning, writes Zahl, not to be happy or respected so much as enough—what religions call “righteous.” To fill the void left by religion, we look to all sorts of everyday activities—from eating and parenting to dating and voting—for the identity, purpose, and meaning once provided on Sunday morning. Seculosity takes a thoughtful yet entertaining tour of American “performancism.” Ultimately, Zahl brings us to a fresh appreciation for the grace of God in all its countercultural wonder.

WHAT DO THE MUSIC GROUPS AT ST. ANDREW’S ON-THE-SOUND HAVE IN COMMON?

If your answer to the question above is: “They sing!” or “They play musical instruments!” or “They read music!” you would be mistaken. Not all the music groups sing like the Compagina Choir or play musical instruments like the Bell Choir or read music which isn’t true for the Children’s Choir. (None of them read music!) No, the one thing that all the music groups at our church is that they sing or play at two services. Yikes! Two services? That seems like a lot of church going! How can they do it? More importantly, why do they do it? First, our musicians do not stay at church all morning! No, the Bell and Children’s Choirs usually play or sing during one service and then play or sing at the beginning or end of the other service. In doing this, they can share their ministry to a larger portion of the congregation. In contrast, the Compagina Choir sings at one service on alternate weekends. Again, this enables the choir to reach a larger number of people than if they only sang at one service. This leads us to the “WHY?” question. The short answer is that we want to deepen the two music services with inspiring choral or instrumental selections that will inspire worship. The longer answer is that we can include more people in the music ministry. This is part of the reason we chose the name Compagina Choir which means “combination” choir. We ask the musicians who usually attend the 9:00am OR the 11:15am to form a choir so we can include more people as participants as well as listeners. Together this common factor of singing or playing at two services makes a BIG impact upon the life of our church.

From the Music Room

Page 7: February 2020 Soundings - St. Andrew's On-the-Soundstandrewsonthesound.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Soundings-… · The Episcopal hurch delights in archaic and obscure titles and

It is always encouraging when we hear feedback from the congregation about how much the choirs at St. Andrew’s On-the- Sound have impacted a person’s worship experience. This is particularly true when someone from the 9:00am services comments about how the Compagina Choir’s anthem has enriched the service. We are thankful for all those who serve in the music ministries at our church and give their time, energy, (sleep!) and schedule to grow our musical ministry to include so many! Please take a moment the next time you see a member of one of our choirs to tell them how much you appreciate their ministry! It will mean a lot to them. If you would like to learn more about the opportunities to be a part of our music ministry, please don’t hesitate to call (763-498-2553) or email ([email protected]) me.

St. Andrew’s Preschool

The teachers, parents, and students alike are happy to be back at school following Christmas break. Not only are we busy learning about colors, numbers, shapes, and the alphabet, but preschool is also about learning to share, walking in a line, cutting with scissors, holding a pencil correctly, and so much more. Preschool is an exciting time full of fun and learning in order to ready our students for kindergarten. If you or someone you know will be looking for a preschool program this year or in the years to come, have them call or email me; I am always happy to speak with people about our special preschool program. It is never too early to get on our wait list.

Did you know that on Wednesdays we have lunch bunch? Our school day usually runs from 9 am until noon every day except Wednesdays. On Wednesdays the 3 and 4 year old classes have the option of bringing lunch and staying an extra hour to eat with teachers and classmates. Lunch bunch is a fun social time with the added benefit of preparing our students for the cafeteria in elementary school.

**For the 2020-2021 school year, we have limited openings in our 3-year-old program! **

Blessings, Tracy Hanson
