MISSION STATEMENT 4-H EMPOWERS YOUTH TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL WORKING

AND LEARNING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CARING ADULTS

What is Global Citizenship?

Global Citizenship involves people of all ages understanding the world around us and our place in it. Global Citizenship requires working to develop and share understanding with others so that they can be re-sponsible and knowledgeable global citizens. Appreciation for all cultures, including one’s own as well as a desire to learn and explore issues affecting societies, agriculture, environment, and resources around the globe, are key compo-nents that make up Global Citizenship.

Global Citizenship is a youth development program under the Civic Engagement priority area within Iowa 4-H. It can be found within the State 4-H Council, the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference, 4-H at the Iowa State Fair and more.

Upcoming Events:

Global Citizenship Day - August 20, 2020

Global Clover:

We have began editions of the “Global Clover” for 4-H clubs across the state! Our intent is to feature a different country around the world each month, each of these countries has a 4-H program or similar. In order for youth to understand what Global Citizenship is for them and how they can both impact the world and be impacted by the world around them, we want to highlight different countries, languages, economics, activities, traditions outside Iowa and the U.S.We also have a service project or activity of sorts with each month’s Global Clover. The service activity will relate to the featured country.

January - South Korea

Clubs, staff teams, and extension councils are encouraged to sign up for the Healthy

Living Club Challenge and integrate healthy practices into their monthly meetings by

offering water, fruits and vegetables, and/or physical activity. A new approach this

year introduces techniques for improving mental wellness through monthly “bonus

challenges.” Earn “miles” by completing challenges and moving your club/team

across the map by the end of June. Check out the Iowa 4-H Healthy Living Ambassa-

dors webpage to register and gain resources for your meetings.

Fun Facts!

Mount Everest is the tallest mountain

in the world. Mount Everest is locat-

ed on the border between Nepal

and Tibet. The mountain is 29,029 ft.

tall which is equivalent to the height

of 20 Empire State Buildings stacked

on top of each other!

Cows are considered sacred in

Nepal. Many cows roam around the

country freely. The cow is the

national animal of Nepal and it is

illegal to eat meat from cows.

The 4-H Connection:

• 4-H Nepal is the first registered 4-H organization in South Asia. 4-H in Nepal was founded in 2014. Nepal is leading 4-H campaigns to start 4-H in India, Sir Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives and Afghanistan.

• Through 4-H Nepal, young people are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities that emphasize 4-H’s “learning by doing” philosophy of youth development.

• The 4-H motto in Nepal is “To Make the Best Better”

Motto in Nepali: Uttama bēsṭa banā'unakō lāgi.

• Nepal 4-H Rational:

1. Head: represents managing and thinking skills.

2. Heart: represents relating and caring skills.

3.Hands: represent working and giving skills.

4.Health: represents living and being skills.

Connection:

Get to know your heritage!

Did you know that Nepal has the world's densest concentration of World Heritage sites? Well...what does this mean?

Heritage sites are landmarks or areas selected by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization for having cultural, historical, scientific or any other form of significance. This means that the people of Nepal really appreciate and honor their culture.

Your task:

This month discover your heritage. Ask a family member about your heritage and then research more about it. Find out what makes you, you! Make a poster, PowerPoint, or write a paper to let others know about your culture and how neat it is! Consider submitting your creation about your culture as a project to your county fair for judging!
