Saints U15A fast bowler, Sam Ndlovu, has enjoyed a bright start to his high school cricket career. As a new

ball bowler, he has bowled fast and accurately and his left arm action often has batsmen in strife. He took

four ‘four wicket hauls’ in his U14 season, but on

Saturday 3 February at the Durban Collegians Oval, he

took a career best, 6 wickets for 15 runs! It is also a

record for our U15 age group, breaking previous record

holder, Cameron Brown’s 6/50 including a hatrick against

Kingswood in 2013. The Saints cricketers gathered at the

Indoor Cricket Centre this

week to acknowledge the

change to the record

boards. Adding to the

occasion was the previous

record holder being

present to shake hands

and personally

congratulate Sam; as

Cameron said, “Records

are meant to be broken

and it is exciting to see the

next wave of Saints

cricket talent coming

through”.

Our Prep School was excited to welcome the Dolphins Cricket Team on to the Saints Oval this morning! The boys had the opportunity to hear from the team and get a few signatures before some of our boys headed on to the field to enjoy a bit of batting and bowling with the players. Thanks so much to the Dolphins for taking some time out of their day to visit us at St Charles College!

During January, due to the bulk earthworks near the Coach House, Summer Hospitality was dispersed by

placing some braai’s around the fields on game days. For the remainder of our summer Saturdays, the

Saints Hospitality at the Coach House will resume as normal. The intention is to create a lunch time

option for all parents and supporters to socialize in a relaxed environment on campus. This applies mainly

to teams that play all day cricket; however, parents of all teams (cricket and basketball) are welcome to join

in.

Each week the Saints Sports Department will extend the invitation to our opposition so that they can inform

their parent community. General details are as follows:

Fires will be provided (these will be lit at 12:30pm)

Refreshments will be available for purchase – cash only (please support our Old Boys Club)

SCC will provide salads, rolls and disposable plates. Please bring your own meat, cutlery, braai tongs etc.

Please note that the Coach House will close after lunch in accordance with the playing times

SCC Coaches and players involved in all day cricket games will go to our dining room for lunch

We encourage you to join in on Saturdays and get to know the other parents in your son’s team. We also

look forward to creating a welcoming and hospitable environment on campus for all our visitors. For parents

who live further away and are not able to support every weekend, you can follow sports updates on the

twitter handle @Saints_Sport as well as cricket live scoring on www.websports.co.za

(search for St Charles).

St Charles College were clinical in beating a strong

DHS side high in confidence after a couple of

outstanding results this season. The hosts won the

toss and chose to bat, which suited the visitors as

St Charles College would have opted to bowl first

anyway. A terrific opening spell by Cameron

Spangenberg, 3 – 28, saw the hosts reeling at 70/7

at the half way stage of their innings. Unfortunately,

St Charles College were not able to finish off the

job and were made to bowl out their 50 overs after

some defiant batting from the DHS lower order.

Needless to say, St Charles College would have been

happy with their bowling and fielding, requiring only

146 to win off 50 overs to win.

After taking two early wickets DHS would have thought

they were firmly in the game, but a gritty and

determined batting performance by opener, Kyle

Moodley, 25 retired hurt, aptly supported by the stroke

making pair of Jason Login, 31 and Wes Madhevere,

53 not out, saw them take the game away from DHS

and stride to victory in the 32nd over and win by a

comfortable 6 wickets.

Results in brief: 1st XI DHS 146/10 (Spangenberg 3/28). SCC 150/4 (Madhevere 53*). SCC won by 6 wickets. 2nd XI DHS 99/10 (Ras 4/53). SCC 101/5. SCC won by 5 wickets. 3rd XI DHS 40/10 (J du Plessis 4/5) SCC 42/2. SCC won by 8 wickets. 4th XI DHS 43/10 (Laskey 3/3, Chetty 3/8). SCC 45/1. SCC won by 9 wickets. U16A SCC 297/5 (Botha 92, Raw 82, Lutge 48). DHS 98/10 (Erasmus 3/28, Botha 3/32). SCC won by 199 runs. U15A DHS 98/10 (Ndlovu 6/15). SCC 100/2. SCC won by 8 wickets. U14A SCC 174/7 (Urquhart 83). DHS 170 (Ritchie 4/28). SCC won by 4 runs.

The Saints travelled to Durban on Saturday to take on long-time rivals, Durban High School. On what can only

be described as a blistering hot day, the two first teams took to the court at 12:30. The game was a tight affair

throughout with both teams battling to shoot from the perimeter due to gusty wind conditions. As a result, the

game became about getting to the hoop and both teams altered their defences to prevent close range shots.

Heading into the fourth quarter, it was the DHS team that held a slight lead. The Saints did rally behind some full

court pressure which cut the lead to 4 points with five minutes remaining on the clock; however, DHS managed

to consistently make baskets down the stretch and ultimately maintained their lead. With time running out,

St Charles College was forced to foul and stop the clock but DHS were excellent from the free throw line and

eventually finished with a comfortable 10-point win, 75 – 65.

Results in brief: 1st Team SCC 65 – 75 DHS U16A SCC 52 – 42 DHS 2nd Team SCC 25 – 15 DHS U15A SCC 26 – 30 DHS 3rd Team SCC 35 – 15 DHS U14A SCC 35 – 11 DHS 4th Team SCC 26 – 28 DHS

The SCC U9s played in their first hard ball cricket matches

which turned out to be very successful. The U9B team won

their fixture in the 16th over chasing 33 runs with Aiden

Marian being the pick of the bowlers taking 5 wickets for 6

runs and Letho Ngcobo taking 3 wickets for 7 runs.

The U9As had an exciting encounter against Cowan House

to win by 4 runs. The SCC U11B team had a 58 run victory

which saw Nzuzo Gaston taking 4 wickets for 15 runs.

The Saints U11As won by 8 wickets against Cowan

House with Connor Vogt taking 3 wickets for just 10

runs.

The Open age group also had a successful week of

cricket with all the teams recording victories. The 6th

side won convincingly with Mbhele Ntshangase

scoring 50 not out. The SCC 5th team also proved to

be too strong for their opposition to win by 123 runs.

Zuko Nkosi scored 34 runs while Grayson

Groesbeek chipped in with 31 runs. Siphesihle

Dlamini was the pick of the bowlers taking 4 wickets

for 13 runs. The 4ths won by 3 wickets with Ujjval

Nirghin scoring a quick fire 30 runs off 15 balls.

The Colts won their fixture by 78 runs. Oliver Chapple top scored for the team with 66 runs not out and Chuhal

Pillay made 50 runs not out. The Saints 2nd team won by 7 wickets which saw Kaden van Greunen scoring 57

runs not out.

The Prep 1st eleven batted first and scored 297 for 5 in their allotted 45 overs. Connor Riley top scored with 71,

Marcel Wellmann contributed with 57 runs not out and Stefan Veldsman scored a quick fire 49 runs. The Prep

boys then bowled out their Cowan House counterparts for 53 with Cian Fortmann being the pick of the bowlers

taking 4 wickets for 21 runs.

Well done to all our Prep cricket players this past week. We look forward to hearing more great team results and

individual performances this coming week. – Mr Chad Barron

John Burchmore (Grade 12) was invited to participate in the Natal Midlands Tennis Trials between top U19

school boy players on Tuesday, 29 January.

In his first round of matches, he dominated the court, winning his initial matches 9-0, 9-0, 9-0. After tea he faced

the winners of the other groups. There are some very tough opponents in that class from other schools such as

Michaelhouse, Hilton College and Maritzburg College. There were ultimately 20 players in the U19 group from

over 10 participating schools, and home schools.

True to form, John won these challenges too, not dropping a single match. Walking away with a resounding

victory based on amount of games won, he was soundly out of reach with a solid lead of 9 games above his

nearest competitor across his matches. This secures his invitation to the KZN Trials in early March when he will

play for a spot in the provincial side to compete at a national level.

We wish him the best after all his hard work in training! – Mr Stuart Orwin

Last week Tuesday the Saints A swimming squad travelled to Howick Prep to swim in a mini gala. It turned out

to be a successful outing for our SCC swimmers, finishing 3rd overall. The U11 age group impressed with a

number of first place finishes while both the U9 age group and the Open age group boys achieved podium

finishes. Well done to our all our A squad swimmers, keep up the hard work at training.

Earlier this week some of our St Charles College Prep boys joined forces

with girls from St John’s D.S.G. and participated in the Top 10 Gala at

Wembley as a combined school. This differs from our usual mini galas as

each boy competed in all four strokes over a distance of 25/50m in an

individual event. The swimmer with the fastest total time in the combined

four events determined the winner of each age group. Our overall scores

were then combined with the scores of the St John’s D.S.G. girls and we

were determined the overall winners of the gala. Well done!

Congratulations to Connor Vogt (U11), Trent Chubb (U11) and Grant

Bridgeford (Open) who placed first in their respective age groups.

The Junior Primary boys are learning about ‘Emotional

Intelligence’ throughout this year. We are teaching them to

recognize their own emotions and those of others. We feel that it

is extremely important to not only discern between different

feelings but to be able to name them as well.

The goal is to help them to manage and express emotions

appropriately and to handle interpersonal relationships both

maturely and empathically. These boys were awarded a ‘Golden

Heart’ Badge for demonstrating a pleasing EQ, during our

Wednesday assembly.

The Grade 10 History boys visited the Durban Holocaust and Genocide Centre with Mrs Joubert on Wednesday, 6 February, and were able to learn valuable life skills such as compassion and empathy. They were guided in the museum by a Jewish volunteer and were presented with information about the Second World War and the consequences of the Holocaust. They were able to interact with the education officer in the meaningful programme presented to them and were able to see a replica of the Anne Frank room and interpret artworks drawn by survivors of the Holocaust.

The Science and Engineering club has started the first term

by looking at the science behind crystals and how they are

used in our everyday life. Crystals do not just have aesthetic

value but also have a

fundamental role in

science. Crystal structures

were used in the

determination of the

chemical structures of

cholesterol, penicillin and

vitamin-B12 as well the

double stranded nature of

DNA. Crystals are used in

most of our electronic

devices as single crystal

silicon and also in liquid

crystal displays (LCD)

screens. Crystals can also

change the nature of some

of the food we eat.

The boys in the science club had the opportunity to experience this first hand when they were given the

opportunity to make their own ice-cream. If the crystals in their ice-cream were small then the ice-cream

had a smooth, creamy texture but big crystals resulted in a coarse and icy quality.

The boys also had a competition to see who could grow the largest crystal of the best quality as judged by

their peers. Boaz Hansen (grade 11) and Emmanuel Faluade (Grade 11) came in first position with a large,

well-formed crystal of Epsom salts (MgSO4) with Tristan Stielau (Grade 10) taking second place.
