The Bell February 2018

From Our Interim Pastor…

Thank you, First Lutheran, for the blessing you have been to me over the

past few months. It is inspiring to see your faithful ministry in this commu-

nity and I have learned during my time with you. I will conclude my time as

your Interim Pastor at the end of January.

Pastor Campbell will be with you soon to join you in welcoming God’s

Kingdom here in central Texas. God has been good to First Lutheran for

generations and continues to show his love to us and to this community. Alt-

hough the faces of leadership change over time, the same Lord is our founda-

tion and strength as we proclaim God’s love.

Pastor Sappenfield

Let all that you do be done with love. 1 Corinthians 16:14

From Your Council President...

Happy New Year to everyone. I hope 2018 will bring you nothing but peace, love,

growth, and forgiveness. We welcome February and the Lenten season!

I would like to give Brenda Wallin a HUGE thank you for her guidance, direction and

leadership throughout 2017. She is a great leader and friend. I look forward to her

friendship & mentorship throughout 2018.

Council started off the year strong! We had a Council/Committee retreat January 6th. It

was well attended and I served everyone a nice breakfast. We had a great time getting to

know each other, as well as discussing what 2018 holds for all of us. As a Congregation

we will grow spiritually and hope to see spiritual growth in our community!

As January comes to a close, we thank Pastor Bill for his dedicated service here at First

Lutheran as our Interim Pastor. Thank you, Pastor Bill, for your great leadership while

you were here. You brought a great light to our congregation, and you will be missed!

Our next focus will be to begin preparing for Pastor Rusty’s arrival March 1. We have a

Transition team in place and are beginning their work to prepare the congregation for his

arrival. We will have quite a journey ahead of us! Please look to next month’s Bell, as

well as the bulletins, for updates on Pastor Rusty’s installation.

I look to each and every one of you to help guide the Council and Pastor Rusty in the

right direction that best equips our ministry to blossom. It will be an adjustment for all of

us and I ask for your patience. Welcome Pastor Rusty and his wife, Sylvie, with open

arms and show them what a loving congregation we are! The last two years have been a

difficult transition time for First Lutheran, but we have remained a strong congregation

with loyal members. God has blessed us and has great things in store for us in 2018!

I look forward to serving this year as your Council President! Please contact me with any

questions, comments, or concerns you may have. Together, we will work to strengthen

our mission statement, “To love and serve Christ in our community in the unity of the

Holy Spirit!”

God Bless,

Lorna Brockette

2018 Council President

Lenten Soup

Suppers

Each week on Wednesday at 5:30PM, a soup supper is provided for members who attend the Wednes-day evening Lenten program. The suppers are hosted by the various committees and the council, with each com-mittee hosting a different week.

There will be a sign up sheet in the fellowship hall for members who wish to bring soup. At least 8 units of 1-gallon soups are needed each week. We also ask members to bring cornbread which is a nice compli-ment to the soup.

The host committee is responsible for set-up/clean-up and the desserts, if they desire.

Committee assignments are as follows:

Feb 21– Worship Committee

Feb 28– Congregational Care Committee

March 7– Property Committee

March 14– Fellowship Committee

March 21– Endowment & Management Committees

“Souper Bowl of Caring” Millions of people tune in to watch Super Bowl Sunday and enjoy their favorite snacks and beverages that even-ing. Billions of dollars will be spent on the Super Bowl—and many people in our communities can barely scrape together enough to pay the rent and go to the grocery store.

We will join hundreds of churches and schools to hold our own “Souper Bowl of Caring” on February 4th. The children and youth will bring out our soup pots, and we will all add our coins, cash, and checks to the “noisy” offerings for the Souper Bowl of Caring. All the money raised will be given to the food pantry of Churches Touching Lives for Christ.

Personal Care Kits The Dorcas-Esther Circle will be

collecting and assembling personal care

kits for Lutheran World Relief during the

Lenten Season.

Items needed are wide toothed combs, individually

wrapped toothbrushes, nail clippers and 4-5 oz. individual-

ly wrapped bath soap. A box has been set up in the Fel-

lowship Hall to collect the above items.

A Thrivent Action Team has been set up by mem-

bers of the Dorcas - Esther Circle. Funds have been re-

ceived from Thrivent to assist in the purchase of the bath

towels.

Last year 70 personal care kits were sent to LWR.

With the help of the congregation, let’s set our goal for 100

kits this year. Kits will be assembled on Wednesdays dur-

ing the soup supper hour. Everyone is invited to pitch in

and assist in the assembly of the kits.
