Year 1 January 2018
Sziasztok!
As I start my fifth month in Hungary, in many ways I’m starting to feel like I’ve lived here forever and in other
ways I’m still learning and adapting and figuring out what’s what. But that’s life.
I couldn’t have asked for a better first Christmas in Hungary!
The last day of school before Winter Break was Dec. 21st, and the 6th grade students (along with a few
others) put on a Christmas program for their classmates. It included songs, dance, small ensembles, and
skits. In the afternoon, after all the students had gone home, the teachers and staff shared lunch together,
which was a nice way to spend time with one another. Then, on the 22nd, I was able to sing with them at
the hospital. Afterwards, we baked and decorated sugar cookies. On the 23rd and 24th (because Christmas
Eve is the big day to celebrate with family in Hungary), several families also wanted to make sure that I felt
welcomed and loved at Christmas, and so I was blessed to enjoy three Christmas dinners! Everyone
wanted me to try traditional Hungarian Christmas dishes as well, which include fish soup, cabbage, various
sausages, and meat soup. It was all delicious! Then on Christmas Day, in the morning I accompanied a
women’s ensemble that was singing at
church, and in the evening, I sang with the
choir in a Christmas concert held at the big
Lutheran church. It was wonderful!
January 3rd classes started back up.
And this week, I’m getting ready to play
piano for the youth led service in Manda-
bokor on Sunday.
As always, I hope this newsletter finds you
well!

Question 55: How do we lead a sexuallypure and decent life?
We lead a sexually pure and decent lifewhen we
B. honor marriage as God’s institution, thelifelong union of one man and one woman
Catechetical CommentsA Series
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
This month we take up the Sixth Commandment:
You shall not commit adultery.
What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we lead a sexually pure and decentlife in what we say and do, and husband and wife love and honor each other.
Note: As the Synod has just published (yet another) newCatechism, from this point on I will be making reference tothe Catechism 1991 for the purposes of this series.
The Catechism 1991 continues its answer tothe question: “How do we lead a sexually pureand decent life?” by saying: “We lead a sexuallypure and decent life when we honor marriage asGod’s institution, the lifelong union of one manand one woman.” It then cites the followingpassages of Scripture:
Gen. 2:24-25 - Therefore a man shall leave hisfather and his mother and hold fast to his wife, andthey shall become one flesh. And the man and hiswife were both naked and were not ashamed.
Mark 10:6-9 - From the beginning of creation,“God made them male and female.” “Therefore aman shall leave his father and mother and hold fastto his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” So they are no longer two but one flesh. Whattherefore God has joined together, let not manseparate.
Many tomes on this question could be written– and have been. There is little in our societydebated more hotly than this.
Two questions arise that are most basic andfundamental to the entire discussion of marriage:1) Whose institution is it?; and 2) What constitutesa marriage as it is intended by God?
The second question implies an answer to thefirst. In Genesis 2 it was God who institutedmarriage. The command is later repeated byJesus (Matt. 19; Mark 10) and St. Paul (Eph. 5).
So, God invented marriage, God establishedthe parameters, and God set the rules for whatmarriage is. Present day society wants to changethat and make marriage a human institution, saying, in effect, that since humans inventedmarriage, humans can determine what it is,insisting that we mere mortals get to decidewhether one man and one woman make up amarriage, or whether that can be two men, twowomen, or whether it should be limited to twopeople. Why can’t a marriage include more thantwo?
And, of course, modern society can’t beblamed for being the first to want to bend therules. Already in the Book of Genesis we seeJacob taking a second wife because he likedRachel better than Leah (Gen. 29). Kings Davidand Solomon blew the doors off the divinelyestablished parameters of marriage, each havinghundreds of wives and concubines besides. It’snot a new problem, but one with a very simpleand clear solution: Honor God in your marriage. More on this next time. T

Senior Pastor
FROM THE PRINCIPAL “Walking Together!” February 2018
Following in the footsteps of St. Paul, Luther and the Reformers sought true peace and unity in the Church through the pure proclamation of
the Gospel. Indeed, the only way peace and unity can be achieved in the Church on earth is through the pure teaching of salvation by grace
alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
In a church rife with discord brought on by false teachers, St. Paul’s desire is for the
Galatians to abide in the Gospel first preached to them, that we are “justified by faith
in Christ and not by works of the law” (Gal. 3:16). The fruits of this Gospel are
harmony and concord with each other as they “bear one another’s burdens, and so
fulfill the Law of Christ” (Gal. 6:2). The apostle closes out his letter to the Galatians
urging them to live in love and service to each other; to care for their pastors; and to
never depart from the Gospel, but always to boast not in self or works, but in the cross of Christ alone.
Read Galatians 6:1-18
1. The Gospel puts us all on the same page as sinners who are covered by the righteousness of Christ. Since we are all recipients of God’s
undeserved kindness, the Gospel does not permit someone to “think he is something when he is nothing” (Gal. 6:3). Luther speaks of how
Christians bear one another’s burdens, dealing with one another as fellow sinners: “The kingdom into which you have been called is not a
kingdom of fear and sadness; it is a kingdom of confidence and happiness. If you see your brother in terror because of a sin of which
he has been guilty, run to him, and extend your hand to him in his fallen state. Comfort him with sweet words…in a spirit of
gentleness, not of zeal for righteousness or cruelty.” How does the Gospel of Christ shape the way in which we approach sin and rebuke
our fellow Christians?
2. The Church finds her unity in the Gospel and its pure teaching. As the Small Catechism teaches,
“God’s Name is kept holy when the Word of God is taught in its truth and purity, and we, as
the children of God, also lead holy lives according to it.” When Christians are rightly taught the
Word of God by their pastors they are edified and strengthened in the faith. Thus Paul encourages,
“Let him who is taught the Word share all things with him who teaches” (Gal. 6:11). How does
the Church’s support of her Pastors and Teachers strengthen their unity and faith around the Gospel?
3. Paul’s closing words to the Galatians emphasize the necessity of the Gospel, brotherly love, care
for pastors, and doing “good to everyone, especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Gal.
6:10). Luther explains, “‘The household of faith’ is a new phrase to designate those who belong
to our fellowship of faith; first among these are the ministers of the Word, and then the other
believers.” What compels Christians to care for their pastors and one another?
4. Over and against the false teachers in Galatia, the apostle boasts only in the cross of Christ (Gal. 6:14). He does not seek the approval of
men, but rather to preach the Gospel of Christ, even if it brings persecution upon himself (Gal. 6:12, 17). Luther describes what Paul was up
against: “The false apostles are striving to accommodate themselves to the demand of these men that they live outwardly and regulate
their lives as they require. To keep the favor of these men and to avoid the persecution of the cross, they teach that circumcision is
necessary for salvation.” Name some ways and instances where we might be tempted to compromise on doctrine in order to appease the
world.
5. Paul doubles down, once again, on justification by faith alone apart from the outward works of the Law: “For neither circumcision
counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation” (Gal. 6:15). Luther reinforces Paul saying, “There is nothing under the
sun that counts for our righteousness in the sight of God except Christ alone, or as [Paul] says here, ‘a new creation’…a work of the
Holy Spirit, who implants a new intellect and will and confers the power to curb the flesh and to flee the righteousness and wisdom of
the world. This is not a sham or merely a new outward appearance, but something really happens. A new attitude and a new
judgment, namely, a spiritual one, actually come into being, and they now detest what they once admired.” As “new creations” in
Christ why should we insist on adhering to the Gospel of the cross of Christ? How, then, does that Gospel direct how we live our lives?
The clarity of the teaching produced by the Lutheran Reformation is a treasure
beyond compare. When Luther and the Reformers unflinchingly proclaimed the
Gospel of Christ, boasting only in His cross, unity and oneness came in the
confession and concord of the Church. As new creations, we seek to “walk by this
rule” so that “peace and mercy be upon [us], the Israel of God” (Gal. 6:16), that
is, upon the Church. This rule—the Gospel of salvation by grace through faith in
Christ apart from works—is the rule “about which Paul is speaking here…By it
we live in faith in Christ and are made a new creation, that is, truly righteous
and holy through the Holy Spirit, not through sham or pretense.” True unity and concord is found in the truth of the Gospel, not in an
imitation peace that the world regards and upholds, but peace with God and one another in “the household of faith” through the forgiveness
of sins won by Christ and given to us in the Gospel preached.
Let us pray. “O Comforter of priceless worth, send peace and unity on earth. Support us in our final strife and lead us out of death to
life.” Amen.

February is American Heart Month
American Heart Month/National Wear Red Day The American Heart Association wants to help everyone live longer, healthier lives so they can enjoy all of life’s precious moments. We know that starts with taking care of your health. American Heart Month, a federally designated event, is a great way to remind Americans to focus on their hearts & encourage them to get their families, friends & communities involved. Together, we can build a culture of health where making the healthy choice is the easy choice. Did you know?
• The first American Heart Month, which took place in February 1964, was proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson via Proclamation 3566 on December 30, 1963.
• The Congress, by joint resolution on that date, has requested the President to issue annually a proclamation designating February as American Heart Month.
• At that time, more than half the deaths in the U.S. were caused by cardiovascular disease. • While American Heart Month is a federally designated month in the United States, it’s
important to realize that cardiovascular disease knows no borders. Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease & stroke, remains the leading global cause of death with more than 17.3 million deaths each year.
• That number is expected to rise to more than 23.6 million by 2030.
