A WONDERFUL STORY TO START OFF THE YEAR

A number of people in our community may recall attending a black tie ball at The De Vere Hotel in October 2009. That evening a fifteen year old from Broad Hinton took to the stage in front of 250 adults to share with us a very personal story. Benjamin McMahon could have focused on how, at aged four, he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Or he might have mentioned that aged six he was given less than 24 hours to live as he lay in a coma in Intensive Care at The John Radcliffe Hospital, having contracted pneumocystis pneumonia on top of the leukaemia. He might have decided to tell us all that aged seven he completed a three year chemotherapy treatment and was officially declared to be in remission but after six months of just being "normal" he spent that Xmas and New Year in hospital with viral encephalitis. He didn’t mention any of this, nor that the age of eight he relapsed and the leukaemia returned. Rather than focus on the two more years of very intrusive and debilitating chemotherapy and radiotherapy which followed, the subsequent five years of progressive remission treatment or the fact his schooling was entirely compromised by the many years of illness, compounding the challenge of his dyslexia and dyspraxia, he took a different course. He stood in front of all those adults and brought the house down as he spoke with great humour about his experiences during an evening he conceived to raise money for the hospitals that had cared for him. Some of you reading this were there and still talk about the impression he made. By age 19 he had 8 GCSE's and 4 A Levels and was auditioning for drama school, committed to pursuing his long standing ambition to make a career of acting. 21 000 people auditioned for drama school that year in England, 1000 at his desired school, ALRA. They selected 28. He was one of them. He graduated in August this year. I am sure everyone reading this will be delighted to learn that straight out of drama school he has been cast in the UK tour of The Play That Goes Wrong. This Olivier award winning show plays in the West End and on Broadway. It will now tour 40 provincial theatres in 2018 starting in January. The play is incredibly popular and very funny. In terms of the more local options, Bath Theatre Royal, Cheltenham Everyman and The Oxford Playhouse are amongst those already pretty much sold out. Bristol Hippodrome has few seats left. However between the 11th and 16th of June the tour will visit The Wyvern at Swindon. Tickets again are selling fast - and not only to his proud parents Paul and Lynda! For those who’d like to celebrate the success of one of our own or simply enjoy a really good night out and haven’t already booked your seats it should definitely be a date to put in the diary. I am sure that we all wish Benjamin great success in his new career and congratulate him on his achievements so far through such adversity.

“Easter Lilies” As usual, we are offering everyone the opportunity to dedicate an Easter Lilly to someone you love, in remembrance. As last year, the cost will be £6 a lilly, and I will be going up to London to buy the lilies in New Covent Garden on the morning of Maundy Thursday. This means that I need to know by Tuesday 28th March at the latest, if you would like to have lilies named in honour of a loved one, and their name. Kirsty Cramond has kindly said that once again she will produce a beautifully written list of all the names, which always looks wonderful. The flowers will be arranged on the Saturday, in preparation for Easter Sunday morning service in St Peter Ad Vincula. Last year the church looked absolutely stunning with its displays of white Calla and Longiflorum lilies, together with the greenery and yellow blooms of spray chrysanths, daffodils, gerbera and Golden Calla. Do please help us to put together a wonderful display again by supporting this, and remembering someone you love. Either telephone me on 731050, or email me at [email protected]

Broad Hinton Church – Pew Cushions

We are thinking that our congregation would be much happier with cushions on the pews! They would be very welcome for comfort, but also it is warmer than sitting on bare wood. The PCC is looking to buy some cushions in memory of John Hussey, who gave so much to the church over so many years, and apart from that we have had four individual offers to “sponsor” a pew! In the first instance, we would probably look to fit cushions in 5 of the pews on each side, in front of the cross-aisle, which would cost £1,655; even better, if we could manage it, all the pews in front of the cross aisle at £2,504. The cost of a cushion for one pew is £165 (that is an average, as the pews are different length). Would you be prepared to sponsor a pew? Or to make a donation towards the cost? It would add to your own comfort when you come to a service, and also make the church a more welcoming place for those who come in just to enjoy the peace and quiet. Jenni Moseling and Sally Cartwright, Churchwardens

**************************************************************************************************

To all those who help Broad Hinton Church All the many people who help the church, in so many different ways, are invited to a special Songs of Praise service, with drinks and nibbles afterwards, at 5pm on Sunday May 20th – your personal invitation will be arriving in due course! So many people give of their time, effort and money – from the mowers, through cleaners, flower-arrangers, cake-makers, gutter-clearers, financial helpers, choristers, sidesmen, the list is very long. We would like to make this a very special service for you, so if you have a favourite hymn you would like included, please let one of the Churchwardens know and we will do our best. Jenni Moseling and Sally Cartwright, Churchwardens.

Allotment expenses under £50: Village’ maintenance payments; all emailed and

6. Highways & Maintenance & Parish Steward Priorities

JH gave AS an update in his absence and the work requested appears to being

done.

A Winterbourne Bassett resident has requested that Councillors research

whether planning permission is required for a large garden wall that has been

erected at Lanes Cottage Winterbourne Bassett.

A resident contacted GH to compliment him on the work done on the Whettles

and remarked how the site is vastly improved. Councillors concurred.

Dates were suggested for the Villages’ Clean Up – Saturday 24th March 2018.

Posters will be produced and communication sent to the Village News &

Facebook accounts and Posters put up in the Villages.

Additional Items

7. Precept for 2018-19 GH/AS

A detailed discussion was held about what level the Precept should be set at for

2018/2019 and the Chair proposed that the Precept should not increase from

last year. Several calculations were provided by the Clerk as information to base

the Councillors’ decision on. Last year’s Precept information and decision were

also taken in to account. GH’s suggestion of 1.20% (no change to last year) was

put forward for the Councillors present at the meeting to vote upon.

The Councillor vote result was:- 5 in favour and 2 not in favour. The motion was

therefore carried to request a 1.20% Precept Increase – which amounted to an

extra £114.17 annually. The Clerk will arrange to complete the necessary

paperwork and submit the request to Wiltshire Council before the 19th January

deadline.

The Parish Council had considered the implications for the Parish on increasing

the Precept, based on the amount of extra spending required year on year.

Also, careful consideration was given to the impact on the Parishioners; the cost

of living rise and the possible increase in duties being delegated by Wiltshire

Council to local Parish Councillors.

Due to the amount of consideration and preparation required for calculating

the Parish’s Precept requirement, it was agreed that the investigation, discussion

and calculations for Precept for 2019-20 should be discussed at the November

2018 meeting, in preparation for signing off a final figure in January 2019.

8. Transparency Funding & Domain Name WL

There was a discussion around the way forward for the Parish Council in light of

forthcoming changes to Data Protection legislation. The Transparency Fund has

enabled the PC to buy a laptop, printer and software for the Clerk’s business

use.

The consideration needs to be going forward about the use of personal emails

for Council business and the impact of the new legislation on how the Parish

Council conducts information provision and dissemination. ZC kindly agreed to

assist the Clerk with the new DP Act. Also further research will be done around

whether it is in the PC’s best interest to have a gov.uk domain name, emails and

website.

ZC & WL

9. Councillor Roles GH

There was a discussion around the allocation of Councillor roles, as the Parish

Council now had its full remit of 9 Councillors. The following were agreed:-

Finance Lead – Zoe Cooper Policies – Gillian McFarlane

Robert Horton - Environment & Emergency Planning (replacing Alex La Roche)

The changes will be forwarded to the website for publication.

10. AOB

Allotments: There was still an issue around the accuracy and history of the

historic Allotment Finances and so investigation of the archive accounts

paperwork still needs to be done.

It was agreed that the Allotments Working Party continue to work with the

Allotments committee and come back with a proposal for the management of

the Allotments going forward.

Playground: The subject was raised again about a Playground so Councillors

once again discussed the issue and the impact that it has for the Parish Council,

re-insurance, health and safety, maintenance etc makes it an unaffordable

liability.

Broadband: Parish Council were disappointed that the promised survey and

funding of Superfast Broadband by BT for Winterbourne Bassett for the end of

2017, has not happened.

Police Liaison: CG Confirmed that we do get regular reports from the Police and

she will pass on any information she feels is relevant to the PC rather than

circulate the report.

A resident has raised the issue of the horses in the field and they were told that

the RSPCA and the Police were informed of the situation. CG will contact our

Police Liaison Officer again to raise the concern of the PC and residents.

AS updated the Councillors about progress with purchasing the White Horse.

The Plunkett Foundation grant has been received and a top-up loan applied for.

There are currently 45 private investors. Plans are progressing well.

Winter opening hours

Monday- Friday 9am - 5pm, Saturdays, Sundays & Bank Holidays 10am 4pm

In the Winter don’t forget that a trip to your community shop will save you petrol and time. New Milk Supplier We are very excited to have found a new milk supplier, Berkeley Farm Organic Dairy. This is great news as they are very local, based just up the road in Wroughton and the milk is organic. Berkeley Farm Dairy is owned and run by the Gosling family who have been producing and supplying milk since 1908. They use traditional methods of milk processing which focus on taste rather than convenience. They pasteurise the milk but do not homogenise it like most dairies. Homogenising breaks down the milk fats which they think affects the taste. Berkley Farm milk has a traditional 'cream line' which is only seen in milk that has not been homogenised. Our customers have told us that they love the taste. Why don’t you come down to the shop to buy some milk and see if you can taste the difference? We have been able to keep the prices down and the 500ml and 1 litre products are a bit cheaper than our old supplier.

Milk quantity Previous Price New Supplier Price

500ml 63p 58p

1 litre £1.00 99p

We are also selling their Luxury Guernsey whole milk in 1 litre bottles for £1.05. Volunteer News Lots of our volunteers enjoyed a New Year party at the beginning of January which was a lovely social event. Why not join our team? It is a great way to meet people and make new friends. We need volunteer shop assistants, but if you don’t want to be in the public eye there are lots of other things you could do to help such as baking, cleaning or helping with deliveries or collection of supplies. We don’t expect you to volunteer at the same time every week unless you want to. If you can only help occasionally we would also be grateful for this. Any help however small is gratefully received. Full training will be given. If you think you would like to volunteer, please call Lyn, Lynda or Holly at the shop on 01672 539200. Charity Donations Thank you to everyone who has put money in our collection boxes on the counter. This year we are collecting for Prospect Hospice. The money raised from sales of carrier bags last year was £78.20 and has been passed onto The Harbour Project, our nominated charity for last year. We also collect tins and packets of food for the Devizes Food Bank. Local Deliveries Please don’t forget that we can deliver to you if you are unable to come into the shop. Just give us a ring on the number at the top of this article. Michele Lomas (Chair of Avebury Community Shop)

Hidden History and the Upper Kennet Pilgrim Story We begin a series of monthly articles centring on the hidden pilgrim history of all 8 churches – Perhaps you have never visited more than one or two. Why not set yourself a new year’s challenge and visit all 8 and discover for yourselves the peace, beauty and deep spirituality of faith expressed in the changing shape of our churches. St Nicholas Fyfield is listed in the Domesday Book 1086 A.D. The church as it currently is certainly dates from the 14th Century and was believed to have Saxon foundations. We now understand that the earlier Anglo Saxon church contained some remarkable Celtic carved images of the Holy Trinity. St Nicholas Church was originally a chapelry of West Overton and became its own parish in 1704. However, recent historical investigations into the churches of the Upper Kennet Benefice have revealed a far richer heritage than originally understood. The churches of the Benefice, INCLUDING Fyfield, were used by pilgrims on their way to Bristol, where they took the sherry boats to Spain, and walked their way on to Compostela di Santiago, then onwards to Rome and Jerusalem. Sometime circa the year 1632 Fyfield was led by the first of several puritanical priests who stripped out the trappings of what they perceived as being ‘popish heresy’ and in doing so denuded the church of a great deal of its’ earlier internal heritage. The ceiling, frieze and carvings have been identified as being considerably older than the date of 1634 carved above the entrance to the Chancel, and architectural remnants indicate that once a large hung cross dominated the entrance to the Chancel. Frieze running round the entire nave is carved and 17th century. What these fanatically puritan priests did not do however, was remove one of the most rare and special depictions of the Holy Trinity in a roof-carving. High above the Nave are wooden carved cross beam sections, each of these carvings being of one piece. The entire carving is a symbol of The Trinity, and is of Celtic origin and incorporated into the roof circa 9th Century. The Trinity is depicted as making the universe spin with their passion and love. The date 1634 carved in the cross beam over the Chancel marks a demarcation line between the puritan preacher in a puritan place ending the struggle against High Church priestly rule .This battle takes place within the period of rule of the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Laud. His High Church policy, support for Charles I, censorship of the press, and persecution of the Puritans aroused bitter opposition. Originally, the entrance to the church was approximately 8-10 feet above current floor level and those entering the church did so through the elevated West Door, descending into the church. It is no wonder explorers failed to find the classic pilgrim graffiti marks on the lower walls of the Vestry area for they were some 15-20 feet above our heads, carved with dagger points as they passed in and out. Exterior Facing the church one sees the porch- but viewed side on one sees that originally there would have been a Saint’s niche over the doorway- a stone covering for the Patron Saint, Nicholas. Wander around the church and you will find many fine examples of graffiti. A Sun dial, providing a hole for stick, which when inserted assisted those present to tell the time.

Page 10: February 2018 Community Calendar - Broad Hinton · 2020. 7. 2. · 17/07768/TPO 6 Fortunes Field, B. Hinton. tree work on ash and branches of others, no objection, Agreed 17/08770/TPO

A pilgrim Cross of St James. A basic joining across three dots- shape here is very unusual form of making the sign of the cross. A very intricate dotted pattern was found to have been made by a medieval dagger point twisted hard against the stone. Then lastly a ‘T’ or Tao cross reminding us of the symbol of Moses on Mount Nebo. A Franciscan order of monks connected to Wilton Priory and heavily influential in terms of pilgrimage may well have been along this route and may have contributed to the vast number and wealth of T crosses on this particular church. At rear of church we see evidence of servants loitering waiting for their rich masters. In Idleness and boredom they played ‘fives’ against wall. Tudor graffiti W –and Stuart graffiti- also present along with an abundance of pilgrim crosses consisting of well in excess of a dozen more. Classic pilgrim’s crosses are normally found on south side of churches, as traditionally the North side of the church was regarded as being the Devils’ side. At Fyfield however, the Cross carvings are found on the North side- where pilgrims gathered. Why? The answer is that a North aisle would have been there originally and when the whole site was rebuilt the North Aisle was removed, and the remnants used elsewhere in the rebuild. And this rich pilgrim history of welcome and hospitality to the stranger continues today. We offer all visitors and fellow pilgrims a warm welcome, a space to stop and ‘be’ and wonder, and to pray. Wherever you are on your pilgrim journey through life we invite you to stop a-while and draw breath. We pray that you know God meets you here too, just where you are in life and will journey onwards when you leave. Peace be With you. Rector, Warden and All at Fyfield, St Nicholas. ************************************************************************************************

Bee Hive (Broad Hinton) Preschool News

Happy New Year to you all!

Last term we had so much fun focusing on Christmas, our families, feelings and emotions. We made tree decorations, calendars, cards and much more; it is lovely seeing the pride in the children’s faces at their finished artwork. We raised over £25.00 icing biscuits for Children in Need – Thank you!

The December snow and ice has meant that we started investigating winter earlier than last year and we have already watched the birds eagerly eating all our fat balls.

Now we are back in full swing for the Spring Term with a focus on healthy living. We will be cooking and eating healthy foods, learning about good hygiene and of course continue our twice a week PE classes with a focus on why exercise is good for us.

THE RIDGEWAY LADIES

On Wednesday 3rd January at 7.45pm in the village hall the Ridgeway Ladies had their

first meeting for 2018.

The meeting started with the A.G.M. Our Chairman (Marilyn Martin) gave an amusing

report for the previous year and this was followed by the financial report for 2017. The

present committee was re elected....however the treasurer wanted to step down and we

are pleased to welcome Lynne Butler as our newly elected treasurer.

Once the ‘official business’ of the A.G.M. was completed the members all participated in

a quiz. Around the hall there were seventy one pictures of well known personalities

displayed and all we had to do was to name them. Sounds easy but it’s amazing how

difficult it can be to recall the names of the most familiar of faces! There was much

discussion (and laughter) amongst the ladies and after a collaborative effort we managed

to name all the personalities!!!

A most enjoyable social evening.....a great start to the new year. On Wednesday

February 7th at 7.45pm in the village hall we have Debbi Evans, a children’s author, as

our guest speaker.

All ladies welcome – please come and join us.

Wroughton Country Market

Freezing February – the shortest month of the year, which can seem like the longest! I know that usually I can’t wait for February to be gone.

Did you know that the Anglo-Saxons called this time of year Sol-monath, which translates as ‘cake-month’. Apparently this is because cakes were traditionally offered to the gods. I’m not sure what Anglo-Saxon cakes were like but I bet they weren’t as tasty as those on offer at Wroughton Country Market, every Friday between 9am and 11am at the Ellendune Community Centre. There is always a good selection available, often packaged in smaller portions, but whole cakes are available too. We have homemade cookies and pies as well as savoury items like sausage rolls. All baked goods can be made to order (ring me on 01793 638240 for more details).

Don’t forget that St Valentine’s Day falls on the 14th February. Maybe you can choose a handmade Valentine’s card, from the craft stalls, for your loved one, or buy a special cake to share. And then, of course, Shrove Tuesday is in February too ….. and we can all feast on pancakes without feeling guilty!

So it seems that February is all about the cake!

I think I quite like February after all!

Broad Hinton Church of England Primary School

– Invitation –

9am Friday 2 February, Coffee and Bacon Rolls

Our school in Broad Hinton has been established for 275 years. Currently we have just over 100 pupils on roll, and also have the Beehive Pre-School on site. Our school, in its 4 classes with a variety of break out groups learning in a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces, is, according to the outstanding SIAMS inspection last year “through its distinctive Christian character, outstanding at meeting the needs of all learners”.

We look for local involvement; a large proportion of our pupils are from Broad Hinton and Winterbourne Bassett, but others are from further afield, drawn by the particular qualities of teaching, learning, care and ethos. We are proud of our school, and our pupils show “that learning is fun and enjoy recalling their experiences” (OFSTED 2017). I am one of two foundation governors; we also have parent, LEA and co-opted members of the governing body “the critical friend” to our school. We also have a very enterprising and successful Friends of Broad Hinton School, with whom we work to support, engage and improve learning and environment. From time to time there are vacancies on the GB; new supporters are always welcome to the FBHS. Please join us in our school hall for coffee and rolls at 9am on Friday 2 February to find out how you could be involved.

Roderick Palfrey, Chair of Governors. Tel. 01793 731067 or 07799 221816.

– generally supporting the effective working of the Governing Body.

Training is available, if required. Discretion and confidentiality are essential in this role.

Visits to the school are welcome and you are warmly invited to contact our Admin Officer, Mrs Sharon Keen, for an application pack and further information. Tel: 01793 731262 / E-mail: [email protected]

“Dog Owners in Broad Hinton” You clearly like dogs. I actually like dogs, even though I am a cat owner. What I DO not like is finding plastic bags full of dog poo as I walk round our village. On January 15th as I walked along Footpath No. 5, between Post Office Lane and Fortunes Field, I picked up 5 separate small plastic bags of dog poo! What is it with some dog owners? Do they have no common sense or community feeling? What possesses them to actually take plastic bags out with them, stop to pick up the poo, and then put the bag and its contents down at the side of the path? It is a form of random stupidity that no-one can understand. More dog poo was found along the path to the allotments as well – not the kind of thing you want to walk in on your way to dig up vegetables. It would actually be environmentally preferable to let the dog poo (off the path please) into the base of a hedge and leave it to degrade naturally, rather than inflict the offensive plastic bags on the rest of us. Yes, please take a bag and pick up your dog’s poo, but don’t rudely dump the bag and poo for someone who cares about the village to find and dispose of. Sally Cartwright and Marilyn Martin

View from the Rectory

I remember the first time I watched a soap opera on the telly. I was very young, the TV was black and white and there were only four channels: 2 Irish stations and BBC1 and 2. Our staple diet of RTE programmes were enough to put you right off God, the Church, and Christianity in general. They were sanctimonious in tone and designed for the most part to scare you into being good, unquestioning, attenders of services. There was, in addition, a type of character that appeared in many of the shows I remember, including the ‘serious’ religious current affairs programmes that represented a less than appealing stereotype of what it is to be a Christian. Narrow-minded, judgemental, censorious and often quoting snippets of scripture to have a go at someone, these individuals seem to be an essential staple in the cast list of most of the soaps - think Dot Cotton, Ena Sharples etc Such stereotypes do Christians no good and in my experience are far from realistic, if only because I’m not sure how much scripture many of us could actually quote with accuracy in any case. I must admit feeling both inadequate and frustrated in the face of a scriptural avalanche usually quoted out of historical or theological context. It does the church that serves the community with commitment no favours. One of the problems is that there are huge gaps in the knowledge of history and context, theology and interpretation, even by the most regular worshippers. This is a real weakness as we endeavour to grow into the kind of person God wants us to be. We need more than a spoon-fed diet from the pulpit Sunday by Sunday. We need to learn together if our faith is to deepen. There is nothing stale or old fashioned about the life of Christ, his teachings and his death and resurrection. If ever there was a page turner, it is the gospels, but so often we only encounter them when we are in church, no doubt longing for a short sermon to follow! Lent is approaching, and so perhaps those of us who regard ourselves as Christians might make it a priority to take seriously the call to discipleship as summed up beautifully in the prayer of Saint Richard:

Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly,

and follow you more nearly, day by day.

My hope and prayer for our churches in 2018 is that more of us might be able to make that prayer a reality. The Lent course we will offer in 4 bite sized sessions will be a valuable tool for this and it is open to anyone living in the Upper Kennet Benefice whether a regular church goer or just curious. Further information is inside this magazine. Will you commit to deepening your knowledge and learning and grow your faith as we reach the spring time of the year? Go on - take a risk, you have nothing to lose. Rev’d Maria Shepherdson
