OH&S REMINDER

Please wear appropriate footwear when training your dog in class

No thongs,

If your dog steps on a thong, you can fall and may need medical

attention, plus the noise from thongs can distract or upset your

own dog or other dogs. Long coats and flappy skirts/dresses

can also distract your dog from training.

WARNING - Please do not touch or walk close to unattended dogs that are tied to a

fence or post etc. This also includes dogs that are in

crates.

When dogs are tethered or contained they see the area

around them as “Their” space and will protect it. Be aware and

walk about 2 metres away from them.

We had a lovely warm day for our 2016 Christmas

Party, the children enjoyed watching Kerryn and Max

track down Santa as he got lost on his way to the party.

The food was delicious and the demos were amazing to

watch.

Progression through the Obedience Classes

Beginner Class: Exercises are basic – Heeling, Sit, Stay, Drop, Recall and Turns. Intermediates: Exercises as above plus Heel patterns with Figure 8, Stand for examination, One minute sit stay, one minute drop stay, stand and drop, Change of pace. Community Companion Dog – CCD Heel on lead, Stand for examination on lead, Recall (off lead), One minute sit stay (off Lead), Two minute drop Stay (Off Lead) Novice- CD Heel Free, Stand Free for examination, Recall, either Retrieve on Flat or Change or position, One minute Sit Stay, Three minute drop stay.

Obedience Voice and Hand signals

Note: These signals are required in the CCD and above classes. Beginner &

Intermediate handlers/dogs are still learning & may need alternate methods/signals.

Sit No signal (dog watches your footwork for indication of a stop)

Stay Command the dog to “Stay”, at the same time handlers right hand crosses in front of their body

about 12”/30 cm in front of the dogs’ nose and continues back towards the dogs’ nose in a blocking

action, stopping a few centimetres from the dogs’ nose. Handlers hand returns to their right side.

Stand Command the dog to “Stand”, (a long sounding word) at the same time handlers right hand

crosses in front of their body and stops in front of the dogs’ face. Handlers hand returns to their right

side.

Down Command the dog to “Drop”, at the same time handlers right hand crosses in front of their body

to stop in front of the dogs’ nose and continues straight to the ground below the dogs’ nose. Handlers

hand returns to their right side. (Do not sweep your hand from dogs’ nose across in front of your feet –

this encourages dog to lie crooked).

Recall Command the dog to “Come”, at the same time both arms move up and away from handlers’

body, held there for no more than 2 secs, then handler returns arms to original start position.
