Commodore’s Comments Ahoy Sailors, Cold weather sailing is upon us, brrrrrrrr. Ok, that is funny here in Florida, or is it. We may get lucky in February and have a warm Rum Race or not. Many of us wouldn’t think of sailing in 50 degree weather. We lucked out in January with the mid 60s on Bonfire day and the Rum race. This little reminder to be prepared for a cold, wet sail is by a fellow who learned to sail on the Puget Sound and then moved to Maine. Even if it doesn’t rain, a little spray over the bow can ruin a sunny day if you don’t have that slicker. Of course hiding behind your crew works till you can get your foulies on. The cold is relative and I haven’t even mentioned fighting off hypothermia from being submerged during a capsize. Wet suit anybody? Heard it snowed in Gainesville last week. Item from my bucket list, sailing an iceboat! Ok, ok, enough about the cold. More fun to come in February, Buccaneer Night, Rum Race and the Potluck for which we need a volunteer, please call Art or myself if you can host. Hope to see you on the water or the bar whichever comes first. Let’s go sailing! “I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm's way.” John Paul Jones “Does this mean I have to put my beer down” Herb FEBRUARY 2016 Ocala Sailing Club Newsletter Your Commodore, Herb Moore OSC OFFICERS Commodore: Herb Moore [email protected] Vice Commodore: Ken Renfro [email protected] Secretary: Art Twitchell [email protected] Treasurer: Jan Cole [email protected] Racing Commodore: Bob Cole [email protected] February 2016 Events Feb 4 Buccaneer Night • El Ranchito / Villages • 6:30 PM Evite details Feb 6 Cruise on Lake Harris / Venetian Cove • Leesburg • 9:00 AM Feb 13 Rum Race #2 / Spring Series • Sims’ Beach • 11:30 AM Feb 18 Pot-luck Dinner Meeting • Host - Need Volunteer 6:30 PM Feb 21 Lemon Point Sail • Hope Ramp • 1:00 PM See our Webpage at: www.ocalasailingclub.org Page 1

SECRETARY’S REPORT MINUTES OF BONFIRE MEETING JANUARY 16, 2016

Respectfully submitted, Art Twitchell- Secretary Page 2

The Bonfire event started in the afternoon with sailing off Sims’ beach. Later, our bonfire dinner featured cooking over the fire with Hot dogs & Brats and all the fixings with S’mores for dessert complimented by all the great potluck items brought by the members. Jan Cole ran a 50/50 Raffle yielding $70. Lisa Edens won $35. Other winners of scratch-off tickets were: Lisa Edens, Ed Sims, Herb Moore, Jan Schumacher and Mark Ciraco.

Commodore Herb Moore started the meeting near dusk about 6 PM and it ran about 30 minutes There were about 30 people there. After thanking the Sims for their generous hospitality and use of their beach, he acknowledged the guests Marco Guerra, Juan’s brother, Terry & Beth Gassoway and Lexi, Heathers D’Souza's cousin. Also, he introduced new members Mark & Helen Statler and birth-days of January: Lisa Edens, Steve Jaffess, Rock Schumacher and Barb Wescoat.

Jan Cole gave the treasurer’s report, our balance $3182.06 as of Jan 1st. Art Twitchell’s secretary report was in the January Newsletter. Both reports were approved. Old Business talked about the con-clusion of the fall Rum Races and the successful Christmas Party. New Business featured the upcoming Spring Series Rum Races which start Jan 30th at Sims’ Beach. Also there was a reminder of the February 6th Cruise coming up on Lake Harris. And Herb relayed that Commodore Guy Anderson of the St Augustine Sailing Club invited us to sail in their race coming up later in March.

The meeting officially concluded and drifted into our notorious OBRS (Ocala Beer & Rafting Society) anxious interchange. Gavel activity occurred when Rock Schumacher, current co-guardian of the precious trophy, announced the passing it over to Ross Martin for his gallant rescue of his new Harpoon which was sailing solo out to sea recently from Eaton’s Beach. The presentation will formally transpire at our Buccaneer Meeting at El Ranchito on Feb. 4th. See you there!

Ocala Sailing Club Annual Bonfire Event January 16,2016

After the sailing on Sunset Harbor,Ed Sims got the fire going. Folksarrived with their potluck dishes and started to socialize. Before it got dark, Herb got the meeting started.

It is difficult to get photos of sailing, when your sailing. That being said, we had sailors out there, san photos:Ken & Sheila Renfro were on their 14’ Holder. Ed, May Lynn and Paul sailed “Poony Tunes”, Herb was out there with Heather and Lexi on his Harpoon. Steve Jaffess was cruising around on “Gloria” and our friendRay Douglas was out there too. So Sunset Harbor was awash with Ocala Sailing Club sailors, even though we have no on the lake photos to prove it.
