WICHITA A’S MEETING MINUTES

February is the month for planning our activities for the coming year. I hope that everyone will come up with new ideas for activities as well as some of the fa-vorites from the past. Activities every month assure our opportunity to get the Model A’s out of the garage and share them with the friends we haven’t met yet.

I want to thank Tom Ruggles for all the time and expertise which he shared while serving as the Wichita A’s coordinator with the Swap Meet for Charity. I be-lieve the swap meet went well under the direction of its new management. With venue changes and needing to organize and train a new group of volunteers to operate it there were plenty of challenges at hand. I believe they did well and that next year will be even better. The swap meet was dear to our hearts and I am sure that we wish them continued success in raising funds for charity.

Denny Ellerman, President

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The Wichita A’s meet on the 4th Monday of the month except December. We do not hold a meeting during the month of December. Other meeting changes will be published in the newsletter prior to the scheduled meeting. The meetings are held at Minisa Park, 704 W. 13th, Wichita, KS. Meeting time is 7:00 PM unless otherwise noted in the newsletter.

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

I have talked to a few club members who would like to see more over night driving tours this year. Hel-en Louise Beaver and I are planning a 4 day Model A tour, which will take place in August. What are you guys planning? I always look forward to our planning meeting to see what our year of activities will look like. Remember the tour planning takes place this month dur-ing the club meeting. Lets make it a very active tour season. I have updated the Swap Meet and Car Show Schedule which is on page 12 in this issue. If anyone knows of a swap meet that is not listed, please give me the information to publish it. 2016 KS Sunflower Swap Meet For Charity

Last year the Wichita A’s sold their swap meet to John Saindon. This year , the night before it star ted, sev-eral of our club members volunteered to help the new owner and his volunteers with marking the swap meet spaces. It was an adjustment for our club members to go to the swap meet and not have our offices to bring food and socialized with each other. The new owners got off to a great start and are look-ing forward to next year. Next year’s date is February 3 & 4, 2017. If you have any questions concerning a swap meet space, the contact information is: Web: ww.kssunflowerswapmeet.com Phone: 316-267-8914

Don Grabendike who always manned a gate outdoors on past swap meets is in doors this year. Someone needs to remind him he can take off his coat.

Darrell Ludlow and Steve Boivin are chatting with a customer.

Gilbert Adams is pointing at something he wants to purchase.

The P-2 building, arena and car barn were joined in to one long building. All dirt floors were concreted.

The first Model A Club in Wichita, was established in 1965. This was a group of 30-40 guys who came together as a group that had this passion for Model A Fords. Some were acquainted, but many not. I remember the conversations in the parking lot after the meetings. Someone would always complain how a young Doctor, new in town, would attend sales and auctions and outbid everyone on Model A Cars and parts. Before the year was out someone brought that Doctor, John Weninger, to a meeting. “Doc” had a lot of enthusiasm and ideas and his membership lasted 50 years. He served as president 4 times, including 1973, 81, 82 & 90. In 1966 a large group of members attended the MAFCA National Meet in

Albuquerque. Sixteen Model A's were driven but Doc didn't have one road ready yet so he and his wife Ruth attended via modern car. They left their 3 children in Wichita including, Eric who was born earlier that year. Yes, this is, Eric Weninger, the now Famous, Model A Medic. Doc's fir st restoration was an ear ly 28, Roadster Pickup which he had till his death.. This was a very good original example which he drove to the MAFCA national in Dallas in1968 and brought home a tro-phy. This pickup had all of the original features including the multiple disc clutch. It was on this trip that our daughter Tama jumped out of our Model A Station Wagon and cut her foot severely on a broken bottle. Doc was quick to the rescue and bandaged it up professionally and tended it the rest of the trip. Tama wasn't very happy that he wouldn't let her swim in the hotel pool, but we were appreciative of his help. With Doc's desire to analyze everything mechanical and improve on it, he soon replaced the multiple disc clutch in the 28 with the later style. The multiple disc clutch was very reliable, but difficult to service and replace. So, over the years it seems that he was always on a quest to find modifications for improvements in Model A's. Most worked out but some did not. At least twice his 1930 AA Truck, “Big Red” had to be hauled home. He and Eric gathered grease seals and “o” rings to make a kit for improved water pump seals. They printed instructions and sold these local and nation wide after advertising in Hemmings Motor News. They used the name, J & E Supply, PO Box 25, Wichita, Ks. They later turned this box number over to the club, which we still use. We can remember five Model A's that Doc had over the years. The 28 Roadster Pickup, a 30 Murray 4Dr which he restored in the seventies and drove often. He built up a 30 AA Truck, “Big Red,”in the eighties and drove it a lot. He had a 30 Tudor which was a fine low mileage original, which he sold to Durward Brown, an active member from Alva, Ok. He often complained that he didn't know why he sold that to Durward. He also had a 31 SW Cabriolet in pieces that he sold to Larry Cushenbery. Doc realized ear ly on that sand blasting was an impor tant process in the restor ing the Model A. He started accumulating a lot of sand blast components, including hoses, pots, connections and guns as well as air compressors. Sometime in the seventies, Doc held his first sand blast party in the 49 hundred block of South Hydraulic. This was a vacant lot with trees and shrubs. It worked out well although we had no restroom facilities. Supposedly Doc had permission to use that lot and he had a gas powered compressor on wheels. Over the years, Doc held several of these “blast” parties which were very popular as many members had Model A parts that needed to be de-rusted. Then he moved to Alexander Street in North Wichita where he had a large building with a few acres around it. One Saturday he hauled in a load of sand on “Big Red”, rented a diesel generator and held a blast party. With several blasters running full time that diesel generator never exceeded an idle. Doc was in the height of his glory, watching this operation running so efficiently. Doc was quick to help anyone with a Model A repair job. He rarely missed a club meeting, and had many suggestions. He took it upon himself to gather a work crew, build three enclosed booths, with slid-

ing Plexiglas windows and propane heat for our use in the remote areas of the swap meet. These worked very well. Initially he hauled them in on “Big Red”. Then he made a special trailer so that anyone could transport them. Doc will always be remembered for his contribution to the club and our hobby in general. RG

Dear Sir, I visited with Aa-ron and Randy Frazer at the Sunflower Winter Clinic in Hutchinson about the 1929 Deluxe A Roadster I have for sale. Randy said you had a newsletter and if permissible I would appreciate you listing it for me. Back in the early sixties I belonged to the A Birds Club while I lived in Wichi-ta. I don’t know if any of them are still around. The only name I remember is Jim Gooch. Aaron and Randy have looked at my car so they could visit with anyone interest-ed. The chassis is restored. All parts of the body are restored and primed except the left front fender. Splash aprons, running boards and rear fenders restored and painted. There are a few small parts missing. If you can help it would be much appreciated. I’m asking $8000.00 for the car. Thank you. Milton Raymer Phone: ……….. Great Bend, KS 67530

SAFETY ISSUE

ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CABLE OR REMOVE THE POWER FUSE, IF YOU HAVE ONE, BEFORE REPAIRING YOUR MODEL A GAS GAUGE. Case History:

The year was 1975 and Charlie Ivey, now deceased, was doing some extensive repair work on a fellow club member’s town sedan. He had taken the gas tank out, took it to a radiator shop and had it cleaned out and then re-installed it. He put a small amount of gas in, and installed the wire harness to the dash panel but hadn’t installed the panel yet. He could start the car by twisting the two necessary wires together.

He had all new or re-chromed gas gauge components and was about to install them one afternoon when he discovered that he was out of cigars. So, he hooked the two wires together and drove the Model A to the store to buy cigars.

He returned home, and as he disconnected the wires a spark was emitted and VAROOOM , the fumes from the gas gauge port ignited. Charlie, being the quick thinking (actually scared to death) and agile in-dividual that he is, leaned back in the seat, lifted his foot and put his shoe over the port, snuffing out the flames. Was he lucky or what?? Charlie quit smoking many years later and now suggests that this inci-dent could be another reason that smoking can be hazardous to your health.

This was not an isolated incident. We knew a fellow Model A’er in the Kansas City area that also ignited his tank when he accidentally shorted across the ammeter. Can’t remember how he extinguished the fire but I think his neighbors were involved. And, his eyebrows and hair were singed. RG

E’ECHO DE PARIS

Hemlines Widen in Every Direction The new Paris collections give an impression of longer skirts and wider hemlines. But having taken this for a general rule, each couturier uses his own judgment as to how the skirt shall be lengthened and where the fullness that widens the hemline shall be placed. Some models show a front flare, others a side flare in a skirt otherwise straight and narrow, and still others have flares of pleats in the front and back. No. 8781. A circular section gives a graceful side flare to the skirt of a simple frock. The neckline is slightly draped by a soft bow. No. 5784. Inverted tucks in the front of the sash lend a draped waistline effect. A circular panel supplies full-ness in the front. No. 5789. Pointed seamings accent inverted pleats at the front and back of a straight line frock. A narrow belt marks the waistline.
