To prevent heart disease and increas awareness of its effects, the Florida Department of Health in Franklin County is proudly participating in American Heart Mon Heart disease refers to several types of heart conditions. The most common type in the United States is coronary heart disease (also called coronary artery disease), which occurs when a substance cal  plague builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Coro nary heart disease can cause heart attack, angina, heart failure, and arrhythmias. You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of d veloping heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is al important for people who already have heart disease. To lower you risk: Watch your weight. Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke. Control your cholesterol and monitor your blood pressure. If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation. Exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables at least 5 servings each day. Lim ing salt or sodium in your diet will also lower your blood pressure. Eating foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol can help  prevent high cholesterol. Guest speakers, health screenings, food and fun!

The Day of Dialogue of Minority Health (DoDMH)

brings church and faith-based leaders together from

North Florida counties with health organizations, unversity faculty, students, and community leaders to

identify health concerns, examine role of church,

share best practices and develop action plans.

DoDMH began in Leon County and now has expand

ed to nine counties that are actively involved in plan

ning faith-based community health programs. Over

1,150 people have attended a total of 12 events held

since 2007. In partnership with Big Bend Hospice.

Celebrate Literacy Week was observed January 26–30 to highlight the important connection between readingand health.

The Florida Department of Health partnered with the Flor-ida Department of Education and the Dairy Council ofFlorida to promote the "Health Literacy in the Classroom”reading project.

DOH-Franklin staff volunteered to read to Pre-K, Kinder-garten and 1st grade classrooms at Franklin County HighSchool, Apalachicola Bay Charter School, First BaptistChristian School. Children's book produced by the DairyCouncil of Florida.
