It was a wonderful day and a positive example of what it means to be the body of Christ in the world. Thank you to everyone that participated and for all you do to make our congregation possible. I look forward to what will take place throughout this year. See you in church! Pastor Jeff Beebe

Reflections and Reactions by Pastor Jeff Beebe

I think we just began a new tradition for Worship on our Annual

Meeting Sunday! Last Sunday the children and youth of the

congregation led our Worship Service. They did an amazing job in

presenting the readings, music, prayers, message, and assisting as

ushers and greeters. The Service was so much fun and the point

was made so well- we are all called to follow our Lord and be his

disciples. Special thanks to our two high school seniors, Amanda

Bishop and Austin McDowell, for sharing the message and being

key leaders in the service. At the end of the Service we also showed a slide presen-

tation of the many activities we were involved with in 2014. What a joy it was to

be reminded of the way our congregation touched many lives last year.

A Children and Youth Service doesn’t just happen, but requires some key adult

leadership. Thanks to Sue Hagen, Judy England, Dale Lambson, Jenny Tempfer,

and Tristan and Sydney Abbott for working with our youth and helping to put this

together. It was well worth the effort and a joy to see the children and youth

participate in the ways they did!

Following the service, we had our 2015 Annual Congregational Meeting. The

spirit of the meeting was overwhelmingly positive as we celebrated the ministries

of our congregation. We approved the 2014 financial report, which, for the fifth

year in a row, indicated we ended the year with a surplus in the operating budget.

We approved the 2015 Annual Budget of $359, 682. Barb Mueller and Chris

Entzel were elected to three year terms on the Church Council. We still have two

open positions, and the Council will seek to appoint two people for one year terms

to fill these openings. We ratified three small changes in the Constitution, complet-

ing the process to fully update this important document.

I’m also excited to report that, after answering a number of questions about the

solar project, we approved the motion to move forward utilizing the $24,000 grant

we received through the Blue Sky Program of Rocky Mountain Power. The

Property Committee and Council will now work out the details, and hopefully we’ll

have the solar panels up and running by June, so we can take advantage of all the

summer sun!

It was a wonderful day and a positive example of what it means to be the body of

Christ in the world. Thank you to everyone that participated and for all you do to

make our congregation possible. I look forward to what will take place throughout

this year.

See you in church!

Lent- 2015 Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18th. We will have a Noon Lunch

and Study as well as our Evening Worship Service at 7:00pm. We begin this

season with the call to repentance and to return to the Lord. The sign of

ashes suggests our human frailty and mortality and remind us of our need for

God’s grace every day.

Throughout the season of Lent our midweek services will focus on the

“Parables of Lent.” Each Service in this series focuses on a Biblical parable that connects to

Lenten themes. In addition, a daily devotional booklet with the same title will be available, at no

cost, which ties directly to the midweek services. Beginning February 18th and continuing

through Easter Sunday, Pastor Beebe will be posting a reflection on each day’s devotion. You

may read these reflections at pastorjeffoslcslc1.blogspot.com.

A Noon Lunch and Study on “The Parables of Lent” will be offered each Wednesday beginning

February 18th, except March 11th, when there is Senior Lunch.

An evening Soup Supper will begin on Wednesday, February 25th at 6:00pm, and continue through

March 25th. Please plan to bring a soup, bread, salad or dessert. The purpose of the meals is to

provide a time of fellowship before the Evening Services. The 45 minute Evening Services will

include hymns, special music, a message, and an opportunity for personal prayer. This year a

variety of prayer practices will be introduced at the Lenten services. We hope this will be an

opportunity for worship, learning and reflection this Lenten season!

Here’s the schedule:

Ash Wednesday, February 18th “Receive Justification: The Pharisee and the Tax Collector”

Noon- Lunch and Study including the Imposition of Ashes

7:00pm- Ash Wednesday Worship Service

OSLC continues to support several charities. Please consider donating this month to:

“SOUPER BOWL” FOOD DRIVE: Please support our Souper Bowl Food Drive by bringing food donations on February 1. There are 2 bins in the Round Room, one for each team in the Super Bowl. Support your favorite team and the Food Bank at the same time. Let’s see which “team” wins! Suggestions include: cans of soup, chili, canned meats, canned carrots, spinach, peas, beans, pasta, pasta sauce, evaporated milk, granola bars, spices, juice boxes or applesauce containers. “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat.”

PROJECT LINUS: If you can help prepare the Project Linus blankets for shipment each month, please talk with Millie Martensen, 801-656-9229. Thank you! We will meet a week later than usual this month, due to Family Promise being here during the first week. We will see you on Monday, February 9, instead of on the 2nd. Please consider making a donation this month to support Project Linus. There are many children who need the security that these blankets can provide. You can put your donation in the offering plate at church with “Project Linus” on the memo line, or donate online at projectlinus.org.

FAMILY PROMISE HOSTING FEBRUARY 1-8: Please sign up on the chart in the Round Room to help our guests feel at home! CROSSROADS FOOD DONATIONS: February food of the month = mac & cheese. Thrift store need of the month=blankets.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ULSTER PROJECT UTAH is once again looking for teenagers in the 9th or 10th grades to participate in this year’s project. This is an international Christ centered peace project in which Protestant and Catholic teens from Utah and Northern Ireland get together during July in a program which includes social projects, group dynamic exer-cises and just plain fun. In addition we are currently accepting applications for young adult counselors for the month. These leadership positions are open to those at least 21 years of age. We look for 1 male, 1 female, (hopefully 1 Protestant and 1 Catholic) to work alongside an adult leader and daily with the 24 teens for the month. Please see www.utahulsterproject.org for an application or check our Facebook page, Ulster Project Utah or call Dot Stefanich at 801-657-2954.

GREETERS NEEDED: We need more volunteers to help us as greeters before each service, but especially at the early service. If you can greet once in a while, please talk to Dale Lambson to get on the schedule, 801-918-0924. DINNER CO-ORDINATOR NEEDED to schedule dinners for our church members who might be in need. Talk to Linda Frischknecht if you’d like to be the new coordinator, 801-419-8897. BLOOD DRIVE NEXT MONTH: On Thursday, March 19, there will be a Blood Mobile in our parking lot from 3-7pm. Save the date! COUNTING ASSISTANT NEEDED: We are looking for members from either service to assist with counting the offering. No experience necessary, training provided. Count will be done after the 2nd service. Time required is approximately 25 minutes. We hope to have enough people so no one is scheduled to count more than once a month; however, any availability is appreciated. For questions, contact Sharon Parks at [email protected] or call/text 801-792-6381.

Lutheran Day at the Legislature!

Ever wonder what goes on at the state legislature? Do you have concerns that your point of view be heard? On Thursday, February 26th, the Coalition of Religious Communities (CORC) is sponsoring Lutheran Day at the Legislature. The day begins at 9:00am and runs until noon. Meet in the

Aspen Room. Optional lunch in the Capitol cafeteria and afternoon activities are also available.

Here’s what you can expect at the event hosted by CORC: Find out for you who your legislators (House and Senate) are, if you don’t already know.

Advise you on how to talk one-on-one to your legislators. That kind of contact is by far the most effective way to express your desires to them.

Provide you with the backgrounds and details of current bills of interest that involve social issues of concern to CORC.

Accompany you to the morning sessions of the House and Senate and guide you in making contact that day with your own legislators so you can express your concerns.

Learn the geography of the Capitol and some of the procedures that govern the Utah Legislature that will make it easier to track the progress of bills through media stories.

For more info, directions, and alternative dates please visit CORC’s website! crossroadsurbancenter.org/projects/corc or call 801.364.7765. If you have additional questions, speak with Pastor Beebe.

Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church turns 55 years old

this month! On February 7, 1960, we started the first

UCLA Church in Utah with 71 Charter Members.

September 4, 1960 was the ground breaking for the

new church. The original Sanctuary was in the West

Wing, where the Youth Room is today.

See the 2 displays of old photo albums and picture

directories in the Round Room.
