Historically, the Chinese New Year has been a time to honor ancestors and deities. While maintaining tradition, younger generations use the holiday to gather with family and the community to share Chinese culture and the hopes of a prosperous new year.

In Chinese astrology, each year is accompanied by an animal sign

and lucky characteristics. !e goat comes eighth in the Chinese zodiac.

According the website China Highlights, the year of the goat will favor creative careers, like actors and illustrators, and those

who work with children, like pediatricians and teachers. To ensure luck in the new year use the numbers two and seven, the colors red, brown, and purple, and the "owers carnations and primroses.

!e Confucius Institute is an educational outreach e#ort of Texas A&M that aims to better prepare students and the community for a global future. !e organization fosters awareness of Chinese culture through academic programs, language education, and community outreach.

!is year the Lunar New Year Celebration has moved to Downtown Bryan a$er outgrowing the space available on the Texas A&M Campus. i

TTOM TURBIVILLE SAYS it was high time the treasure he was sitting on made its way to the public. Turbiville, the former Brazos Valley

broadcaster, had in his possession various forms of original recordings of

his visits with more than 140 veterans, all from the Brazos Valley.

“It’s been my aim since the day I retired to %nd a way to make

these oral histories available to the public. I %nally I have,” Turbiville

says from his home in Beatrice, Nebraska, where he and his wife Judy retired in August of 2012.

From 1999 to just before he retired, Turbiville interviewed more than 140 men and women who served during every con"ict from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan. !ose interviews were preparation for a broadcasted feature show on KAMU-TV, KBTX-TV or on WTAW, where Turbiville was sports director and co-host of the “Infomaniacs” morning show for more than 19 years.

“I went to the home of every veteran and sat down with them and just let them talk about their service,” Turbiville recalls. “And with their permission, I had a recorder running for each visit. What I was

le$ with is a remarkable collection of oral history from veterans who lived in the Brazos Valley.”

Turbiville has uploaded the interviews to the website YouTube, and included a slide show of a few photos with each history.

Anyone can access the library of interviews by simply going to YouTube and in the search area, type Brazos Valley Vets.

“Or if you just Google ‘youtube brazos valley vets’ it will take you right to it,” Turbiville says. “Or just search YouTube followed by the veteran’s %rst and last name, and if they are one of the 140, it should link you right to that veteran’s interview.”

Turbiville says the purpose of the project was not so much for the veterans, but rather for their families. “!ese veterans have kids and grandkids and great grandkids who need to know what they did and how they felt about it,” Turbiville says. “I dare say that a lot of what these men and women told me, they were reluctant to tell their own families, or to tell at all.”

Turbiville says that each veteran had a remarkable story to tell, but a few stand out. “Glenn Morgan, who passed away last year, lived in Camp Creek, and he was a bugler on the USS Indianapolis that was sunk and he "oated in the Paci%c for several days, %ghting o# sharks and exposure.”

Turbiville also points to his visit with Wilson Dickey, who was a sniper in Irag. “With the movie ‘American Sniper’ coming out, I wanted to revisit my talk with him. And his dad Frank Dickey was a ground soldier in Viet Nam. His interview is there, too. And Al Meyer, who spent several years a POW at the prison known as the Hanoi Hilton.”

Turbiville says, “I wanted these conversations available forever for the friends and families of these remarkable people. Many of those interviewed have now passed away, about 40 of them. Many of those families may not know that their loved ones voice, talking about their service, exists.”

Get Fit BOXING WITHOUT THE BRUISESBy SARAH KINZBACH WILLIAMS

FOR THE AVERAGE JOE OR JANE LOOKING FOR A FRESH APPROACH TO FITNESS: THIS WORKOUT IS FOR YOU.

THE GENTLEMAN’S SPORT. THE SWEET Science. Pugilism. Boxing. It has served as an inspiration and brought communities together while changing hard-knock lives and has been the genesis of legendary greats. Spectators have favored the sport since Ancient Rome and now, in College Station, boxing is available as a non-combat, full-body workout.

“Title Boxing Club is unique to the area because we provide an experience you can’t get anywhere else,” says Tami Grimes, Title Boxing Club general manager. “Title is non-contact, group exercise based on a boxer’s workout.”

Workouts are structured in bell-to-bell rounds, simulating an actual %ght. Warmups, active rest periods, and concentrated core exercises are incorporated into every class.

“!is is the ideal workout if you’ve never boxed,” says Grimes. “A boxer’s core is like none other [and] a lot of boxers come in to supplement their workouts.”

For the Average Joe or Jane looking for a fresh approach to %tness: this workout is for you. I personally found the workout invigorating, stress relieving, and empowering despite never

having hit a bag. !rowing punches is incredibly cathartic and the result was a full-body workout without really realizing it. Label me hooked a$er my %rst class.

“Boxing builds con%dence, which changes the way you carry yourself,” says Bill !omas,

Title Boxing franchise operator. “It’s high energy. I can’t help but jump in [a class] and hit a bag.”

“[When] I started, I had never had boxing gloves on,” says Grimes. “!e %rst time I took a class, I wasn’t too sure about it. I’ve been an athlete all my life, but I just wasn’t sure. !e second class was a little better and the third class got me hook, line, and sinker. I’ve got it now. It’s addictive.”

While the classes are non-combat, safety still plays a factor. All students are wrapped and gloved with Title gear. Kids as young as eight can join and Title sells gloves for kid-sized hands.

In addition to group boxing and kickboxing classes on 54 bags, the club o#ers cardio

equipment, dumbbells, kettle bells, a full-size boxing ring, and personal training. All of Title’s trainers are currently competing or former competitive boxers and kickboxers. Every class is di#erent and designed so you don’t plateau in your %tness.

“It’s a club, not a gym, with members,” says !omas. “Our members are our guests and we want them to feel good coming back. If you join and don’t show up, we’re going to call and check

up. We want to create a pleasant experience for everyone.” i

Innovative Products, New Ideas, and Great Deals ANNUAL HOME & GARDEN EXPOCompiled By INSITE STAFF

WITH Pinterest and HGTV,

Do-It-Yourself home remodel projects are all the rage. From repainting rooms to full kitchen remodels, DIY projects can be great for connecting to your space. However, be aware: some projects are best le$ to the experts.

“A cra$sman works all day long, every day in their cra$. It’s usually much more involved than DIYers realize,” says Hugh Stearns, president of Stearns Design Build. “Somebody thinks it’s just a matter of getting paint out of a can and onto a wall when there is so much more to it.”

When undertaking a DIY project, Stearns says it really depends on the individual. “Some people are really handy and willing to do the research,” says Stearns. “We see some homeowners do

beautiful work but all for naught for lack of research. !e problem has less to do with cra$smanship and more with just the knowledge of the way things work together.”

Projects best le$ to the experts: electrical, plumbing, and air conditioning.

“!e earlier stages of construction are typically things that homeowners should not do themselves,” says

Stearns.

Before taking on a remodel project, Stearns suggests thinking about maintenance. Cleaning gutters, maintaining tile grout, and repairing wood rot are among the most important issues homeowners can address on their own.

For homeowners wanting to try their hand at DIY, Stearns says painting, trim work, and tile work are safe projects requiring a lot of research but not knowledge inaccessible to a homeowner.

Landscaping and yard work are great DIY projects, as well. Proper landscaping can help with shading, saving energy, as well as help water "ow and movement around the home, says Stearns. Outside space can yield additional usable areas while gardening can produce food and provide a therapeutic outlet. i

Celebrate Texas Independence Day EXPERIENCE 1830s TEXAS AT TWO-DAY EVENTBy JEANNE ALBRECHT

ALL TEXANS (NATURAL born, and those that got here as soon as they could)

are invited to a Texas-sized 179th birthday celebration on the very spot “Where Texas Became Texas”—Washington on the Brazos State His-toric Site. It was March 2, 1836, when 59 delegates bravely met at Washing-ton, Texas, to make a formal declara-tion of independence from Mexico. From 1836 until 1846, the Republic of Texas proudly existed as a separate nation.

“Texas Independence Day Cel-ebration” is an annual two-day celebration on Saturday, February 28 and Sunday, March 1, on the ex-pansive 293-acre park grounds of the Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site, between Brenham and Navasota. !e birthday celebration features live music, food, traditional cra$s, living history presentations, %ring demonstrations, historical encampments, and commemorative programs.

Guests will step back into his-

tory at this state park to experience life in Texas in 1836 by visiting with reenactors; witnessing %ring demon-strations in the Texas Army camps; watching cooking, weaving and period cra$ demonstrations; and walking the same trail as Texas’ fore-fathers and pioneer families. Q&AHe loves her outspoken wit and confidence; she is enamored by his humor and laid back demeanor. The old cliché that opposites attract might ring true for Tiffany and Heath in some respects, but when it came to her engagement ring they both knew that a custom design by David Gardner was the obvious choice.

How did you know he/she was the one?She has the sharpest wit of anyone I have ever met…and the biggest heart. She is the “go-to” person for all of her friends in any situation.

Watching him interact with people is what made me realize I wanted to marry Heath. He is smart, kind, sincere, and hilarious (among other things), people just love being around him. He is also very calm and steady, a great balance to my Type A + Italian blood combo.

Describe the proposal and plans leading up to it. How many people had to keep it a secret?I kept it a secret until I picked up the ring, and even then, I only told our parents and siblings. I put it in a safe deposit box to give myself some time to come up with something good, but I left the bank and decided I couldn’t wait. I was so nervous about Tiff finding out that I decide to go for it and planned the whole proposal in 24 hours. My buddy helped me locate a restaurant with a nice courtyard that I could propose in, and I sent an email to 50 of our closest friends and family the night before (secrecy was key), informing them when and where it was happening. I told Tiff we were going to grab dinner at a new spot, and while driving over she informed me that she had had a rough day. I remember telling her “Well it’s about to get a lot better.”

The whole thing went off with military precision. We had nice moment by ourselves in the courtyard and then she was shocked to see our closest friends and family members waiting inside. I found out later that my buddy and her roommate had physically moved a band that was playing at the restaurant that night that had tried to set up in the courtyard. All in all it was perfect, and a memory we will always cherish.

Did you have butterflies when you asked her to marry you?Of course I did. I had a whole nice speech that I was going to use when I got down on one knee. I ended up telling her the speech on the way home because the actual proposal was a blur and I pretty much blanked out when I showed her the ring.

I remember telling her “it’s about to get a lot better.”

Describe the process of having her ring designed. Fears? Expectations? The process was intimidating to me at first. As a guy you know it has to be done right, but you have absolutely no idea what you are doing. David made it easy and took the time to find out what Tiff and I both wanted. He and I had conversations throughout the design process about what I wanted it to look like, and what he thought would look best. After our conversations I completely trusted him to knock it out of the park and the end product was incredible. It out did every expectation we had; even my buddies make comments on the ring.

When Heath got down on one knee and proposed, I found myself scared to look at the ring!!! As I recovered from the shock of being proposed to, I bent down to Heath on one knee and hugged and kissed him and said YES!! When we came back into reality, Heath was still standing there with the ring – the most beautiful ring I have ever seen – and said, “well, are you going to take this?” I laughed and took it and was quickly reminded why I was so obsessed with DG’s couture pieces. I asked Heath if this was seriously my ring because it was so much more than I could have ever imagined.

I get comments on it everyday. When Heath is with me and is commended on a great job on the ring, he responds,

“David made me look really

good.”

Geronimo and Karina are hometown natives of Bryan whose paths crossed

countless times before personally meeting. Some may say their fates were sealed early in life when they participated in the same communion at St. !omas Aquinas Church. !e young couple started dating at the tender age of 14 and a"er graduating high school the couple embarked on a new journey of careers and building their #rst home. Little to Karina’s surprise, Geronimo had planned out a romantic proposal on Valentine’s day knowing Karina would not anticipate such a big event on a cliché holiday. A"er 10 years of dating, Karina said yes to Geronimo as he kneeled down in a house full of candles as many wide-eyed family members looked on with excitement and anticipation.

!e enthusiastic couple dove into the wedding planning by securing Ashley & Company as their wedding planner. !e event designer helped take Karina’s vision and truly bring it to life. !e couple decided on a local wedding with community vendors in mind.

Karina and Geronimo’s vision was a New Year’s Eve bash full of glitz and glam with a Great Gatsby party theme. !e couple was

amazed by the perfect cake Sandee’s Sweet’s designed along with the breath-taking pictures from Garza Photo + Design. Karina was con#dent in Debbie Brooks, the owner of Post Oak Florist, and her ability to design the $oral arrangements, but the couple was truly blown away when she saw the $awless $owers and designs on the wedding day. !e couple chose RDM for lighting and displays and felt the company created an unforgettable ambience for the big day.

Finding the perfect dress proved to be a challenge for the bride who stands just short of #ve-feet tall. Karina had seen a dress she fell in love with and tracked it down. She couldn’t believe designer Hayley Paige was having a truck show at the shop she was going to visit. !e dress she had fallen in love with ended up not being “the one,” but fortunately for Karina, she met Hayley Paige herself who helped her design “the one” customized just for her.

!e wedding day was as perfect as the couple had dreamed it would be for nine years. Karina reminisces about reading the heartfelt letter her groom had written which also included Polaroid pictures of their children, Adrian and Atiana. She remembers

basking in the moment; sitting in the church where she and Geronimo had crossed paths so many years before just moments before she was to unite with him for life. As Karina’s loving father walked her down the aisle, not a dry eye was in the church. It was an unforgettable moment for the couple, and shortly a"er their vows were concluded, their guests joined them in the celebration of their marriage at the College Station Hilton.

Mr. and Mrs. Longoria were announced and the couple danced to the Great Gatsby soundtrack by Lana del Rey. Several friends of the bride and groom toasted to their future and guests danced the night away. !e couple took away incredible memories, photos and videos of their friends and family that they will treasure forever. Karina and Geronimo describe their wedding day as a small gesture to demonstrate their appreciation of everyone who inspired and supported their relationship for so many years. Karina and Geronimo hope other couples can have a wedding as unique as their own, because a"er all, no love story is the same!

Rey and I met through mutual friends in 2007. We only hung out a few times not

knowing what our future would hold. A few years later we reconnected and before we knew it, we were spending every day together. We both enjoy being on the boat so we spent a lot of time bounc-ing from lake to lake around the area. Once we realized we loved each other, we couldn’t wait to spend the rest of our lives together! He is truly my best friend and I couldn’t ask for more.!

My advice to future brides would be to get a planner as soon as possible. Amy at All "ings Planned was amazing. She was there for us from the beginning and was always available to answer our questions, large or small. She made the planning process so easy and less stressful. "e day of the wedding, she was out there early with her helpers and I don’t think they stopped moving the entire day. I honestly don’t know how the day would have gone on without them. It was the best decision I could have made.

I had a lot of design help from Ashley and Company, as well. I was not the type of bride that

knew exactly what I wanted. I had an idea and they helped put it all together. Pinterest helped out a lot, as well.

We decided to have a signature cocktail the guests could drink while we were taking pictures with the photographers. YoLanda at Traditions Vintage Rental & Event Design made sure to put that special touch with her talent, chalk board signs and rentals, which really tied everything together. I honestly feel so lucky to have chosen these ladies and I recommend future brides to put your trust in them; they know what they are doing.

Kylee and Rey were married at 7F Lodge & Spa. Flowers and #oral design were provided by Unforgettable Floral. Special thanks to Ashley & Company and Traditions Vintage Rental & Event Design. Cakes were made by Ciana’s Cakes and beverages served by Luke’s Bartending Service. "e wedding featured Snaptastic Photo Booths and photography was provided by Garza Photo + Design. Wedding planning was provided by All "ings Planned.

Ryan and I met through a mutu-al friend. He was having a get to-gether one night

and we both randomly just started talking and exchanged numbers…and the rest is fairy tale history.

He proposed on Kyle Field, the day following his Pro Day at Texas A&M University. As we were on our way to dinner, Ryan got a phone call to do a last-minute interview, taking place at the %eld, which ended up being a ploy just to get me there.

As we were walking toward the 50-yard line, Ryan began telling me he was in love with me and wanted to spend forever together. As he continued with sweet words, he held a football in his hands and said, “If you catch this, it will be the catch of your life.”

!ank goodness I caught the pass, and just as I realized there was an engagement ring tied to the laces of the ball, Ryan was in front of me down on one knee. He did great and had photographers there to capture this special moment. A$er taking pictures, we went to the Dixie Chicken to celebrate with our family and close friends.

Ryan and I got married on the one-year anniversary of our engagement. Although we had begun our journey to other parts

of the country, we knew we wanted to get married in College Station, as this was where we met. We love everything about this town!

We chose Pebble Creek because it is such a pretty building, and I love that it is on the golf course. Also, we had a fairly large wedding, so I knew it would be able to accommodate the number of people we wanted to invite. We ended up with around 500 guests.

At Pebble Creek, everyone we worked with was absolutely amazing! !ey worked with us e#ortlessly to make sure this day was going to turn out exactly how we wanted. !e food was great, the club was beautiful, and everything "owed just how we wanted it go. We styled our reception throughout the Clubhouse featuring international food stations that were presented beautifully. !is was designed so that we could enjoy mixing and mingling with our guests and family and they could do the same.

My favorite part of our wedding day was getting to celebrate with all of our friends; from childhood buddies to lifelong friends we met throughout our years in college and with our amazing families, of course!

!e most unique part was having my grandpa marry us! !e ceremony could not have been more personal;

Engaged at The QueenBy MATT & SUNNI WINKLER

MATT WENT ABOUT FINDING OUT WHAT KIND OF RING SUNNI WOULD LIKE. He made a trip to Brenham to have lunch with Sunni’s father regarding his intention to ask Sunni to marry him. Following that lunch, Matt started making plans for when and where to ask Sunni to be his wife. Ideas ranged from a large "ash mob to a private dinner.

He picked a location: Downtown Bryan. He picked a signi%cant spot that he knew wasn’t going anywhere: the historical Queen !eatre. And he set the date: Friday, September 5, 2014.

He started subtly prepping Sunni for the day by making the o'and comments about the two of them needing more pictures together. When Sunni agreed, Matt rented the marquis of the Queen !eatre and told Sunni the they would be taking couples photos on September 5. When the fateful day arrived, Matt and Sunni met Matt’s sister and a professional photographer Sarah Best in Downtown Bryan for the photo shoot.

A$er Matt read Sunni a letter expressing his love for her and excitement for their future together, the couple began walking down the sidewalk of N. Main Street, just in front of the Queen !eatre. It wasn’t until the photographer had Matt and Sunni stand

After dating a few weeks, both Ma! and Sunni knew that they had found “The One.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters FRIENDSHIPS THAT CAN CHANGE A LIFEBy CASSIDY HUDSON

“EVERYONE CAN POSITIVELY CHANGE THE life of one person just by being themselves,” says Terry Dougherty, director of the Brazos Valley branch of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

As the only local sta# person, Dougherty says con%dence in the impact of Big Brothers Big Sisters is what allows her to run the program as a one-woman show. Her job is to match at-risk youth ages 6-18 with an adult volunteer to act as a mentor, friend and source of encouragement, Dougherty explains.

With two to four outings each month, Dougherty says volunteer big brothers and sisters spend time with a child doing something as simple as seeing a movie, going to a park or baking a treat. With more than 100 current matches of mentors with area youth, Dougherty notes the signi%cant impact the nonpro%t is making in the lives of local children.

“All the kids face adversity in some form or

fashion,” she says, explaining how Big Brothers Big Sisters caters to children and youth with a history of serious problems at home or who are just in need of a friend. Simply spending time supporting and encouraging the kids, Dougherty says, are the little things that can make Big Brothers Big Sisters a life-changing experience.

“It’s always an organization you know of in the back of your mind,” says Katy Dempsey, Candy 95 radio personality and big sister. Whether attempting a new recipe, renting a movie, or a simple co#ee date, Dempsey says that in a few short months, the program has helped her form a relationship with her 15-year-old little sister.

“We’ve really connected, and she’s a very special person in my life,” says Dempsey. “I can’t wait to see her live out her dreams.” Whether it’s supporting her little sister while she marches

with the band in her high school’s hal$ime show, or helping her little sister get ready for her %rst date, Dempsey says she is more of a friend than a mentor.

“She’s like another little sister of mine,” Dempsey says.

Dougherty is emphatic about the positive impact time shared makes in the life of a child. “Somebody thinks they’re awesome just the way they are…How good does that help a kid feel?” Dougherty asks. “I can tell you stories of matches to make you cry,” she adds.

Dougherty describes one volunteer who is guiding her little sister through college applications and %nancial aid. Because of the program, this little sister may be the %rst in her family to attend college. !is experience brings the volunteer full circle, says Dougherty, as the big sister received similar mentoring when she applied to school, too.

In some cases, the program supports the entire family, not just the children. For the sons of a single mother dealing with illness, the program acts as an escape allowing the boys to take a needed break from worrying about their mom while getting out of the house. Dougherty has also visited the mom when she has been in the hospital.

“[Big Brothers Big Sisters] gives kids the opportunity to be out in the community and explore interests,” Dougherty says.

It’s a time for kids to develop their passions and get excited about things they love to do.

“All nonpro%ts brag on volunteers, but I have the best,” Dougherty says.

With local big brothers and sisters investing in kids for as many as four consecutive years, she notes these relationships have the potential to last much longer than the one-year requirement.

“!e most common reason a match closes is because the family or volunteer moves away…that makes me happy,” Dougherty says. “We do almost no advertising for volunteers,” she says, explaining how the organization’s national success has led the local branch to seldom see a shortage of volunteers or interested families.

A local Resource Advisory Board provides support for the work of agency through fundraising, building community partnerships, hosting match events and other activities. Some current members have been actively involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters for more than a decade.

“Fundraising is still a challenge,” Dougherty says, noting the high cost of maintaining a volunteer and child match – about $1,000 for each match.

With a goal of raising $81,000 this year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Brazos Valley has their next fundraiser, Bowl for Kid’s Sake, in March. !e organization has a fundraising goal of $25,000 for Bowl for Kid’s Sake. i
