Shalom B’nai Israel Family, It is that time of year again! While some watch the playoff games to see who will be in the Super Bowl, some of us also gear up for the annual World Wide Wrap, on Super Bowl Sunday, February 1, 2015, sponsored by the Federation of Men’s Clubs, to which Congregation B’nai Israel Men’s Club is a member. The World Wide Wrap is a day to learn about the mitzvah of Tefillin. What are Tefillin? Tefillin or phylacteries, are two leather boxes, called batim, containing four passages from the Bible, which are bound on the arm and head with leather straps, called retzuot. Tefillin are made of leather, shaped into a black, quadrangular capsule with a base of thick skin tithura on one side, and a hollow rim ma’brata, or “passageway” through which leather straps, called retzuot are placed. One tefillah (singular of tefillin) is worn on the head and the other tefillah is worn on the left arm if one writes with the right hand, and on the right arm if one writes with the left hand. Tefillin is considered a positive time-bound commandment because tefillin can only be worn from sunrise to sunset, preferably during the Shacharit or morning service, and are not worn on Shabbat and Festivals. The four Biblical passages contained in the tefillin serve as reminders of four basic principles in Judaism:

1) Our obligation to remember the Exodus from Egypt (Exodus 13: 1-10 2) Our obligation to transmit the tradition to our children (Exodus 13: 11-16) 3) God’s unity and our mutual bond of love (Deuteronomy 6: 4-9); and 4) Declaration of a person’s responsibility to God (Deuteronomy 11: 13-21).

One of my favorite parts of donning tefillin is wrapping the tefillin straps around my hand (we’ll all learn to do that at the World Wide Wrap), and reciting the verses from Hosea, chapter 2, verses 21 and 22: V’ayras-tich li l’olam. I will betroth you to Me forever.

V’ayras-tich li b’tzedek, uvmishpat uvchesed uvrachamim. I will betroth you with righteousness, with justice, with love, and with compassion.

V’ayras-tich li be-emunah, v’yoda-at et Adonai. I will betroth you to Me with faithfulness, and you shall love the Lord. One way I interpret tefillin is a way of betrothal to God. V’ayras-tich li l’olam. I will betroth you to Me forever.

The word forever kept popping into my head the day I was to don tefillin for the first time. I will never forget walking to the Jewish Theological Seminary in October 1993, when I knew I would begin performing this mitzvah for the first time, and would forever do so, as long as God gave me years to live. V’ayras-tich li b’tzedek, uvmishpat uvchesed uvrachamim. “I will betroth you with righteousness, with justice, with love, and with compassion.” As I walked to morning minyan I thought to myself, wow, it is like I am getting married to God, by committing myself to observe the commandment or mitzvah, of tefillin every morning that was not Shabbat or a Holiday. I felt as if I were actually entering into a betrothal with God, and would be wrapping myself in leather, to show how much I love and respect God. I was always part of the Jewish people, but now I would be entering into a symbolic marriage with God, by donning tefillin and reciting verses of betrothal as I wrapped my tefillin. I felt as if I were taking a greater role and more of a part in the communal prayer experience. I dove into the performance of this mitzvah, but I did not know enough about tefillin. Therefore, I devoted my senior thesis for my Religion major at Barnard College on “God, Women and Tefillin”, and studied the significance and importance of tefillin, and the relationship of women to tefillin. V’ayras-tich li be-emunah, v’yoda-at et Adonai. “I will betroth you to Me with faithfulness, and you shall love the Lord.” Once I started wearing tefillin, I would do so faithfully, trying not to ever miss a day. Just as if I were entering a marriage, I would want to show my spouse that I loved him, every day of our lives together, so too, I would not want to miss a day of telling God how much I love and appreciate God and all that God does for me. (And as an aside, when I gave Jonathan his wedding band under the chuppah, I recited the same words from Hosea to him. And the lyrics of the song that was sung when I walked down the aisle were these exact words.) The first day I started wearing tefillin, I truly felt that I was getting married to tefillin.

World Wide Wrap – Sunday, February 1, 2015

February 2015 Kolenu 5775 Page 4

February 2015 Kolenu 5775 Page 5

God would fulfill God’s part of the marriage contract by allowing me to wake each morning to a new day. I would show my gratitude to God for that renewal each morning, by praying, thanking, and praising God and wrapping my tefillin and reciting the verses of my vows of betrothal to God. And that is why I love the mitzvah of tefillin so much. I see it as a way to renew my vows of faith, love, and devotion to God each time I wrap tefillin. Reciting my vows of faith to God each day, refreshes my dedication to the Jewish faith. May we all learn to renew our love of God each day.

I look forward to seeing our Congregation B’nai Israel family on Sunday, February 1, men, women and children, as together we learn about the mitzvah of tefillin at the World Wide Wrap.

Chodesh is a time for women to gather for insightful study through various activities and conversation on the topic of the new

month. Coffee and nosh are always served.

Wednesday, February 18 – Adar – Women’s Identities and Women’s Body Image

Wednesday, March 25 – Nisan – Miriam, Tziporah, Yocheved, Pharaoh’s Daughter – Behind every great man there is a

great woman! The Women who helped Moses

Wednesday, May 6 – Sivan – Women and Torah Study

Thursday, June 18 – Tammuz – Women in the Talmud

Lunch and Learn iEngage – 11:30 am – 1:00 pm - Engaging Israel: Foundations for a New Relationship from the Shalom

Hartman Institute Lecture Series – A video produced by the Shalom Hartman Institute, featuring Hartman scholars discussing

these topics, will be watched and then discussed. Lunch at each session will be served. Please RSVP the Monday before each

session.

Wednesday, March 11 – Morality on the Battlefield – Once a government decides to embark on a war, the integrity of

one’s moral compass shifts to the battlefield. What Jewish values do Israeli soldiers carry with them when going to war?

What happens when complex moral responsibilities and issues meet the horror of war and the morally ambiguous reality

of asymmetric conflict and terrorist tactics?

Wednesday, May 13 – Jewish and Democratic State – Democracy is the decided form of government for the Jewish

nation-state. What does a Jewish state entail, and is it compatible with the principles of democracy? What does

democracy require, and how can Israel’s aspirations to be both Jewish and democratic work themselves out in the

principles governing its policies?

Wednesday, June 3 – Religious Pluralism and Human Rights – As a democracy, Israel is committed to being religiously

pluralistic and to providing equal rights to all its citizens, Jews and non-Jews alike. Does the Jewish dimension of

Israel serve or hinder these commitments? What are the principles and ideas that ought to govern Israel’s policies on

these issues?

Dear CBI Family, Yesterday, myself and a dozen congregants had a spirited discussion about consciousness, evolution, the nature of God, and the meaning of life during part one of “How to be in a Relationship with a God I don’t believe in” Our participants ranged in beliefs from those who have a full ‘traditional’ concept of God, all the way to those who don’t believe in any God at all, and the one thing we all agreed on was that one can still pursue a higher level of existence, no matter what concept of God we hold on to. This month on Wednesday February 11

th at 6:30 PM, we will have part 2 where we will

examine Jewish traditions and practices and how they can be used to achieve higher consciousness regardless of our personal theologies. Even if you missed part 1, I encourage you to join us for part 2, and hope you will participate in the open discussion, as we explore the nature of prayer, and other mitzvot, in order to see how they can be used to make us more aware of the Universe around us. Also this month, I will be distributing sections of Megillat Esther for those who wish to chant them on Purim. Both students and adults are encouraged to participate in this social and joyous event! Ask me for details. Kol Tuv, Hazzan Steven Walvick

CBI Men’s Club Presents:

World Wide

Wrap XV A program of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs

Sunday, February 1, 2015, 9:00am

Every year on Super Bowl Sunday, Men’s Clubs throughout the world highlight the mitzvah of putting on tefillin. Wrapping tefillin is an ancient, meaningful, and inspirational mitzvah. Men, women, and children are all invited to participate.

This year our 4th, 5th, and 6th grade Talmud Torah students will also be participating in the wrap. They will be wearing their own model tefillin which they have created and decorated themselves. If you don’t have your own tefillin and/or don’t know how to put them on, not a problem. We will loan you a pair and help you wrap them. Breakfast will be served.

A M e s s a g e F r o m O u r P r e s i d e n t … .

As I am writing this article, all the talk on the news is about the blizzard

coming to our area this week. We will be making changes to the scheduled

activities based on the weather and driving conditions in the best interest of

everyone’s safety and well-being. We will be communicating any changes or

closings by email and phone calls.

Our February calendar starts off with a number of activities. The first Sunday

starts with the Federation of Jewish Men’s Club Annual World Wide Wrap. It

is also the one day a year when our USY chapter delivers a fresh bagel

breakfast to our doors and the opportunity to win a big cash prize in the Men’s

Club Super Bowl Pool and attend the Super Bowl Party. These activities are all fundraisers for the organizations

who continually support Congregation B’nai Israel throughout the year. Please support these fundraisers by

participating in these events.

In the weeks to come you will see numerous announcements about our Free Talmud Torah and Hebrew High

School. We encourage everyone to spread the news of this exciting history taking place here at Congregation B’nai

Israel. Feel free to tell your family, friends, neighbors and encourage them to take advantage of this special benefit

as a member of Congregation B’nai Israel.

I would also like to encourage and welcome all of our members to bring any suggestions, ideas, thoughts, and

concerns you have about our Congregation B’nai Israel to my attention. Please feel free to contact me at any time.

I look forward to seeing everyone at all of our upcoming events.

Dear Congregation Member, The Kolenu staff is comprised of me, Christine, and the Rabbi. We work very hard every month to create and publish a quality product which is informative and educational. Although we strive to be perfect, we do on occasion make an error or omission. As you know, this is not what each of us does exclusively. Christine and I take care of the administrative and office functions of the synagogue and I don’t need to tell you about all the Rabbi does. We apologize in advance and ask for your understanding for any errors or omissions that may occur. Mitch Herskowitz, Administrator

After the Bar/Bat Mitzvah: Yes, there is life after Bar/Bat Mitzvah! Congregation B’nai Israel is fortunate to have many post

Bar/Bat Mitzvah teens actively involved in all aspects of synagogue life. Hebrew High School is a natural continuation of the

significance of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. It will lead to Hebrew High graduation. We encourage all of our students to attend. It meets

once a week, in the evening and involves children from 8th through 12

th grade. It addresses modern, contemporary Jewish

issues and provides a forum for Jewish teens. Parent’s best communicate the true significance of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah by

encouraging their children to participate in this program.

Furthermore, those who learned to read Torah return to the Bimah often to use their skill. Congregation B’nai Israel Men’s Club

has instituted a program called Yad Shel Chai, in which after one chants 18 times form the Torah, you will receive a Yad

(pointer) with your name on it. We encourage our students to continue using the skills they learn during their B’nai Mitzvah

training.

Many of our teens are active members in Kadima and later USY (United Synagogue Youth). We have an active Youth

Commission which encourages our children to become active in Kadima and USY both locally and nationally. Along with

planning and attending social events, they occupy themselves with community service, fund raising, political and social action

and more. Many regularly attend regional and international USY Conventions with hundreds of other Jewish teens from across

the state, the country and the world. We encourage our children to take advantage of the numerous summer programs offered

for travel either across the country or to Israel. If students continue their Jewish education and enroll in CBI Hebrew High

School, and have good attendance, and their families are in good standing at Congregation B’nai Israel, and have been

members of the Congregation for at least 3 years, students are eligible for a scholarship from the CBI Educational Endowment

Fund, to participate in an approved Summer Israel trip between their Junior and Senior Years of High School.

USY Basketball Returns to Congregation B’nai Israel

After about a 10 year hiatus, Congregation B’nai Israel’s USY (TRUSY) is back in the game – playing basketball. With games in Metuchen and East Brunswick planned for the winter, TRUSY warmed up with an alumni scrimmage game on Sunday, January 4

th at East Dover Elementary School in Toms River. The current team, made up of TRUSY members (High School Students)

came together to battle the old guard in a physical and exciting game, but fell short (94-67) due to the lack of a bench and the hot shooting of alumnus Jake Honschke, Ethan Rosen and Hayley Fried.

From left to right: Amanda Cabey, Joey Cabey, TRUSY Advisor Joanne Gethard, Jack Honschke, Luke Geneslaw, Max Silverstein, Michael Janusz, Adam Rosen & Ethan Rosen

TRUSY lead by guard Lindsey Cabey battled back after being down early and guard Eli Rosen brought the fans out of their seats with his acrobatic drives to the hoop. When Matthew Glassoff sunk a 20 footer with about 6 minutes left in the game, then TRUSY took their first and last lead of the game at 62-61. The game featured five members of the Rosen Family, David (dad), Adam (biggest brother), Ethan (big brother), Eli (little brother) and Cousin Jeremy Bolotsky, as well as five members of the Fried/Cabey Families, Joanne Gethard, Hayley Fried, Joey Cabey, Amanda Cabey and Lindsey Cabey. On the sidelines for the alumni team but not dressed for the game were original TRUSY players, Mark Ginsberg (’71-’74) and Barry Poretskin. The highlight of the game was Joanne’s face guarding of Jake in the closing minutes of the game with no foul call, which was as good as Anthony Hitchens play in the Dallas-Detroit playoff game, later that day. TRUSY team will take the lessons learned to Metuchen on January 25

TORAH FUND

The theme of this year's Torah Fund Campaign is Mishpachah...Family. This theme encourages us, as Conservative Masorti

Jews, to recognize the diverse character of our families. It also encourages our communities to be pluralistic, welcoming, and

open hearted.

The Jewish family, in all its configurations, is the solid system of roots that support our Tree of Life. The community lends its

strength to each family and, in turn, draws renewed energy, wisdom, and direction from its cherished members. These Jewish

family bonds have an immeasurable impact when cultivated in each new generation.

Women's League for Conservative Judaism's support of the Torah Fund Campaign helps strengthen Conservative/Masorti

Judaism throughout the world, and enhances the Jewish community by recognizing and appreciating our diverse families. You

can help strengthen our Jewish family by your support of the Torah Fund Campaign. No contribution is too small. Those making

a contribution of $180.00 or more will be presented with this lovely Tree of Life pin as a gift. It represents your commitment to

seeing our Jewish family continue to grow.

I am available to talk to anyone who would like more information and will gladly accept your donations.

February Birthdays

A special Yom Huledet Sameach to the following Synagogue members who are celebrating birthdays during the month of February

Birthday Shabbat for the month will be Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 9:00 am.

BE A PATRON ONEG OR KIDDUSH SPONSOR!

Celebrating? Any occasion – be it important events in your child’s life, your work life, or your home life; a graduation, anniversary, anniversary of your Bar/Bat Mitzvah, birthday, engagement, retirement…. A Patron sponsorship is designed to allow you, the congregant, to celebrate special occasions with your congregation family when you are not inviting many outside guests. The food provided by a Patron sponsorship will be ample for the usual number of congregants attending Shabbat Services plus a few invited guests. Consider becoming a Patron sponsor of a Friday night Oneg Shabbat or a Saturday morning Kiddush. Just contact the Synagogue Office to make arrangements for sharing your simcha with our whole Congregation! Thank you to Carol Wolintz for sponsoring our Oneg in honor of Jonathan and Rabbi Ellen Wolintz-Fields’ anniversary. Thank you to Carol Wolintz for sponsoring our Kiddush in honor of her grandson Coby Fields’ 9th birthday. Thank you to Patrick and Jamie Dispoto for sponsoring our Oneg and Kiddush in honor of their daughter Rachel marking her Bat Mitzvah. Thank you to Dr. Mark & Shirley Silverstein for enhancing our Kiddush in honor of Mark’s 50th anniversary of his Bar Mitzvah.

A Note from the Library….

Thank you for your donations of used books. We do appreciate them. However, we have a limited amount of space in our Library.

Please call Jeanne Littman at 732 657 5619, to make arrangements to bring your books to the Synagogue. Dropping off your books without pre arrangements makes it very difficult

to organize the limited space in our Library. We hope you take full advantage of the wonderful collection of books we have accumulated over the years in our Library

We never know when the end of life will come. The only thing for sure is that it will be at a very inconvenient time. Why should your family members have to quickly decide where you are to be buried? Why should they have to quickly choose a funeral home for you?

You should have the honor of a funeral service in the synagogue or in a chapel, where those who knew you will accord you the dignity you deserve. But if you do not arrange for this during your lifetime, maybe your family members will say “Let’s do a graveside service—it’s cheaper.” And then, what if the day of your funeral is very rainy or hot or cold? Then they will say “Hurry up and get it over with.” Is that what you would want? Certainly not.

End-of-life decisions should be for you to make—not anyone else. You deserve to choose your own burial place and funeral arrangements. Don’t put this off and leave it to others after you are gone. Contact Fred Weil, our Cemetery Chairman, who will give you guidance in making these decisions for yourself. Your family will be eternally grateful. Brochures available in the synagogue or upon request.

PJ LIBRARY IS A JEWISH FAMILY ENGAGEMENT program implemented on a local level throughout North America. We mail, high-quality Jewish children's literature and music to families across the continent on a monthly basis.

PJ Library is a program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, made possible through partnerships with philanthropists and local Jewish organizations. Today, families in hundreds of communities across the United States and Canada are able to explore the timeless core values of Judaism through books and music. The Jewish Federation of Ocean County is the local funder for this program.

All families raising Jewish children from six months up to six years old are welcome to sign up. Grandparents and other relatives can buy subscriptions on line for children who do not live in our community and do not have a sponsor in the child’s families

community. http://www.pjlibrary.org/
