Making a Living in Fleischmanns...

Even before European settlers came to the Catskills, Native Americans had discovered the sweet properties of maple sap. Early set-tlers often had this as their only sweetening option, as sugar from sugar cane was not available, or was way too expensive. Most fam-ilies tapped a few trees for themselves, but there were some larger commercial operations, even 100 years ago. These two post cards, dating from around 1910, provide a glimpse at the way maple sugaring was done then. Today it is still a vital facet of Catskills liv-ing. Although sap buckets are used today, larger operations, have replaced individual sap buckets with plastic tubing connecting many trees. And new this year, there is a 'universal' system of grading the syrup. But even today many folks still tap trees the old-fashioned way, and boil down the 40 gallons of sap it takes to make one gallon of syrup.

Enjoy your pancakes!

Letter from Mayor Pascarella…..

Dear Fleischmanns Community,

2015 will be a turning point year for this Village. That is what I am thinking to myself while looking out the window at 30 degree below zero wind-chilled whirling snow. With all of the current buzz around the country about the Catskills being the up and coming travel destination of choice, it is time to seize the moment. This is the year we will finally, finally finish all of the FEMA reimbursed reconstruction pro-jects from the flood of 2011. We will also see significant restoration work take place on the theater building. We will also continue to see new businesses opening their doors on Main St. We will also see a new round of grant funded beautification projects taking place around the Village to help further lift the profile of Fleischmanns.

Of course, none of this will be possible without the continued hard work of all those whose constant efforts behind and in front of the scenes get the jobs done. I give great thanks to all of you who have worked and who are working to improve Fleischmanns and our surrounding community. I also ask that we rededicate ourselves, this year, to our shared purpose of continued progress in our Village so we can build on the results so far achieved. I ask that we take full ownership of our future. There is much to be gained in this year of opportunity, but without persistence much progress could be lost. Keep up the good work, and stay positive. Now, back I go to shoveling.

Sincerely, Todd Pascarella, Mayor
