My goal for the Society is to give more; the Board has only been able to give one extra scholarship since I’ve been President, as we have encountered obstacles that prohibited us from doing more (ie, rent doubling at the College). Since we are now a Non-Profit Organization this will open new doors and opportunities and needed dis- counts for us to do just that as I have re- ceived phone calls of congrats and asking to work with the Society to help us achieve those goals. February Meeting

For February 8th in place of our regu-

lar meeting, we will have our Annual

Scholarship Auction.

PLEASE NOTE...The preview is at

5:00 pm with the Auction beginning

at about 5:45. Besides the usual re-

freshments, we will have Pizza for $1 a

slice.

A Word From the President

Hello Members and Friends,

It’s that time of year for our Annual Scholar-

ship Auction where we raise money for two

scholarships in Paleontology- the Bill and

Lelia Brayfield Invertebrate Scholarship and

Mitchell Hope Vertebrate Scholarship named

after founding members- to be awarded to

two undergraduate students at the Florida

Museum of Natural History in Gainesville,

where the fossil record for the State of Florida

is kept. Jim Davis and I have been working

very hard to find some great items for this

year’s Auction. A few of the items that are my

favorites: black Quartz from Arkansas- stun-

ning, Obsidian knife with boar tooth handle,

Crinoid from Morocco is awesome, Libyan Im-

pact Glass, Mount Rushmore Black Hills Gold

jewelry, Pyrite Sun from Illinois, large Quartz

Geode from Morocco, pathological Meg 5‖

This year’s theme is ―The Year of the Collec-

tions‖, the Horse and Deer collections- beau-

tiful with articulated legs, Manatee collection,

Aurora NC fossil collection, many lots of

Shark Teeth, Civil War collection, one of the

more unusual is the Jaws book First Edition

1974 -very hard to find with a Meg, Mako and

Great White tooth, Meteorites from Meteor

Crater, jewelry, Wolf jaw from the Santa Fe

River and many more items. We will also have

our Silent Auction which will end right after

the break and the Kids ONLY Auction too, so

plan on attending as there will be something

you can’t live without. It goes toward a great

cause. My goal for the Society is to give

more; the Board has only been able to

give one extra scholarship since I’ve been

President, as we have encountered obstacles

that prohibited us from doing more (ie, rent

doubling at the College). Since we are now

a Non-Profit Organization this will open new

doors and opportunities and needed dis-

counts for us to do just that as I have re-

ceived phone calls of congrats and asking to

the 1st and 3rd Saturday from 10-2 351 Nassau

St. on the Island in Venice Florida.

ALUM BLUFF ADVENTURE

By: Chuck Ferrara

Alum Bluff Florida is up in the panhandle right out-

side Bristle Florida on the Apalachicola River. It is

the tallest natural exposure in Florida. Elevations

at the top are 175 ft above MSl. During low stage

125 ft can be observed. Ascending order of forma-

tions which can be observed are the Miocene

Chipola formation, Alum Bluff group Jackson Bluff

formation and Citronelle formation. The lower

three units are fossilferous, both the Chipola and

Jackson Bluff formation are famous for their mol-

luscan faunas. Plant fossils can be found too. The

Chipola formation has at least 1100 mollusk spe-

cies to be one of the most ecologically diverse

and species rich faunas in the western Atlantic.

Turritella were found in abundance. I was in search

of Ecphora quadricostata, gastropods everywhere

along with mollusk. Occasionally mammal fossils

are found. the FPS group met at the boat ramp at

8:30 am. We took two trips by boat to the location

on the River. We looked along the shore line and

had lunch right there. It was a great day - cool and

overcast. At 2:30 the boat took us back and we

returned to our hotel rooms to wash up for din-

ner. We dined at the Apalachee restaurant, south-

ern cooking at its finest. I’ve never been to that

part of Florida but that's one thing, to learn this

hobby will take you places in search of those great

finds. It was a great

day if you are inter-

ested in expanding

your fossil knowledge

and go on other ad-

ventures think about

joining the Florida

Paleontological

Society. I have sign

up sheets if needed -

come see me.
