Mission: MHS LEADs academic excellence to prepare students for post secondary opportunities without remediation.
This year Colorado School Grades
(Coloradoschoolgrades.com) ranked MHS 91 of 345 schools,
up from 136 in 2013. Proud to be an Indian! We are proud of
our students, parents and staff for a true LEAD from the Front
effort! We know we can reach our goal of #1 with the
continued support of our community and parents, along with
the hard work our students and staff put forth everyday to do
the best they can. Thank you for putting our kid’s first!

Athletics and activities
Kaitlin Ammermann was chosen as the athlete of the month.
Kaitlin is a softball and basketball player here at Montrose High
School. She is someone who is looked up to by her peers and is highly
responsible for the success of both of these teams this year. Kaitlin
was described by one of her coaches as a natural leader and very
coachable. Kaitlin told me that she has been playing both of these
sports since she was very young. She said that she remembers playing
basketball as early as 6 years old. Kaitlin said that her favorite thing
about participating in athletics is the competitive nature of both
softball and basketball. Kaitlin said her most influential mentor has
been her sister, Lara Ammermann, a 2013 graduate of Montrose High
School and multi-sport athlete as well. Kaitlin said that her sister has
always pushed her and encouraged her to do her best. Kaitlin said she
plans on playing college softball after she graduates
next year. In college Kaitlin said she plans on
studying something related to the medical field such
as physical therapy or pursuing medical school.
Please come support Kaitlin Ammermann and the
Lady Indian Basketball team the rest of the season!
The Counseling Center staff is gearing up for the 2015-2016 course selection process. Students will
receive their materials to select their classes for the 2015-2016 school year during LEAD time on Wednesday,
February 11th. Please sit down with your child to review their 4 year plan and help them select appropriate
courses. Request forms are due back to their LEAD teachers by Friday, February 27th. Call us if you have
questions. There is still time to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Even if you
haven’t filed taxes yet, you can complete this critical financial aid document by using the previous year’s tax
information and simply updating the information when you do file your taxes. Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov to get
started.
Students who are planning to take classes for college credit next year must attend the Concurrent
Enrollment meeting on Wednesday, February 18th during LEAD time. This meeting is mandatory in order to
participate in the Concurrent Enrollment program. Please contact the Counseling Center if you have questions.
The MHS Counselors are trying to collect information on teen smoking. There is a brief, anonymous
survey accessible through your student portal account (check “messages”). This will help us facilitate help
where needed at MHS.

Please Pardon Our Mess:
The library has been in transition for a couple of
weeks while we have added some new work stations.
Many thanks to Chief Boughton’s ROTC students,
who built our new computer stations.
Computer News: The library is using a new operating
system; we have moved from Windows to Linux in hopes of having more
stability during testing. With this new platform, students may have questions; if you have a frustrated student,
please remind them that we are here to help. Also, students will need a flash drive or Cloud-based account to
save their work: we recommend Google Docs or Dropbox. Students can also email documents to themselves,
if they have an email account.
Book Clubs
~This month, Las Charras are reading Of Poseidon by Anna Banks. This underwater tale of
Syrena and the descendents of Poseidon, Triton, and Neptune has been the most
popular book in our library for the past couple of months.
~Real Men Read just finished The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. Their
next book is Paper Towns by John Green. This will be a book that Guys and Gals
alike are invited to read with us, so if you would like to donate money or copies to
our book club, we would truly appreciate it.
~The Lit Chicks are reading the young adult forensic mystery
The Christopher Killer by Colorado author Alane Ferguson.
Fans of Bones or CSI will enjoy this mystery.
Library Fines: If your student has been telling you that he or she has library fines, that is probably
because we have been urging them to keep their fines under $5.00 to stay in good standing. Students who have
fines over $5.00 need to get them paid off, or they can come in a work off their fines by signing up.
