At the 2014 Business Celebration, presented by Owensboro Health, the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce recognized six local businesses as the 2014 Businesses of the Year. Darrell Higginbotham, President of Independence Bank, is the 2014 board chair for the Greater Owens-boro Chamber of Commerce. He assumed the role from Gavin C. Rob-erts, 2013 chairman.

Daviess County Judge Executive Al Mattingly and City of Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne will make their “State of the Com-munity” addresses at the February 6 Rooster Booster breakfast. A large crowd is expected for this annual event. Daviess County Fiscal Court and the City of Owensboro are the co-sponsors of the event, which starts at 7:30 am at the Owensboro Con-vention Center.

Mattingly was sworn into office as the Daviess County Judge Executive on January 3, 2011. In 2003 and 2007, Judge Mattingly was elected and served as an Owensboro City Commissioner, serving as Mayor Pro Tem in 2007. He is active in the community and his church, Our Lady of Lourdes. He is a mem-ber of various civic and professional organiza-tions. He is President of a family-owned plumbing, heating and cooling busi-ness, Acme Plumbing and Heating. A graduate of Owensboro Catholic High School, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Brescia University in 1969. Mattingly served in the United States Army from 1969 until 1972.

Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne retired as an Assis-tant Professor of Accounting at Brescia University in May 2008. Pre-viously, he served as an Owensboro City Commission-er from 2005 until 2007. He has also maintained posi-tions of City Man-ager, the City’s Chief Adminis-trative Officer, from 1997 until his retirement in 2003, and Direc-tor of Finance and Administration from 1993 until 1997. Previously, Payne served 14 years with the City of Tulsa, Okla-homa as a Control-ler, a Deputy City Auditor and even-tually as Director of Finance. He was Owensboro’s City Auditor from 1975 to 1979.

Payne is a Certi-fied Public Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Brescia University and a Mas-ter’s of Science in accounting from the University of Tulsa. He is a veteran of the US Navy and served in Vietnam.

The event, at 11:30 am, will feature Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear as the presenting speaker. Tickets for the event are $45 each in celebration of the 45th Anni-versary of the Athena Awards.
