Hi Wolves,

Time has moved by quickly and along with the ice and cold temperatures, we have reached that midway point and semester 2 is underway. As we move forward with the last half of the

year I hope your student will be filled with the same enthusiasm and Pack Spirit as they began the school year.

I want to congratulate our students who continue to demonstrate amazing talents and skills

through so many different avenues. Our DECA, horticulture, sports, dance, cheerleading, music and Performing Arts continue to demonstrate talent and character that lives up to the pillars of

PACK PRIDE. The musical, Guys and Dolls, was a great success that involved a combined effort of approximately 90 students. Knowledge Bowl is busy at work, leadership and clubs are in full

swing and we just had our second successful Perception Day.

This is an accreditation year for BHHS and our staff is busy preparing for the self review and the visiting team which will be here April 22nd and 23rd. If you are interested in being part of

the accreditation process please contact Gloria Wilson in our front office. Also, if you completed

the parent/guardian accreditation survey, I want to thank you for taking the time to complete it. Your input is important and appreciated.

Our teachers continue to provide a strong academic program with the hopes that every student

will experience success. One of the areas impacting some students’ academic success is understanding the relationship between consistently completing the practice work (which is a

formative assessment showing what you know and don’t know) and the grade or score earned on a summative assessment. The application or practice of concepts taught is very important in

the learning. If your student is struggling please check with skyward and the teacher to see

what might be impacting your student’s growth or progress. Is your student getting help during PACK time, attending the math lab on Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school, or

completing on a consistent basis the practice work or homework needed to apply the concepts being taught?

If your student is a senior, please know that the deadline for several graduation requirements is

approaching and at present many seniors are far from meeting some of these requirements. We have a high number of seniors still needing to complete the required 30 hours of

community service. In addition, many still need to complete a resume that meets proficiency

along with preparing the exit interview presentation that includes a visual. The senior exit interviews are scheduled for March 18 -20 and information is available on our website. For

questions please contact Mrs. Jones in our Career Center (extension 7825).

Please continue to check your students progress on skyward during this second semester. We want all our seniors successful and able to participate in graduation ceremony so, if your

student is taking an online course please see they are keeping up with the pace needed to complete the online course within the required time frame. Seniors must complete all online

courses and verification of the grade received by the registrar no later than May 23rd. All district and state requirements for diploma, including the online deadline must be met in order

for the seniors to participate in the graduation ceremony.

Thank you again for your support with your student’s academic program as well as the BHHS activities and athletics. We have a great group of students at BHHS and we are proud of their

talents and achievements.

Cheer tryouts for the upcoming 2014-2015 year are approaching! If you would like to be a part of this amazing team, please make sure to come to the mandatory

Parent Tryout Meeting Scheduled for March 18th. The meeting will be held in

the Staff Lounge at BHHS from 6:00-7:00pm. Tryouts are the week before Spring Break (March 31st-April 3rd). We are looking for girls with lots of SCHOOL

SPIRIT that are willing to WORK HARD and LEAD by example both at school and in our community!

2014—2015 CHEER TRYOUTS

Please join us for our winter parent/student information night on Wednesday, February 12th at 6:30pm in the BHHS

Performing Arts Center. Topics to be discussed will be our Advanced Placement program, New Market and Running

Start. If your student is interested in any of these programs please plan on attending. Our counseling center staff will

be in attendance for any other questions you may have. Hope to see you on the 12th.

WINTER PARENT/STUDENT INFORMATION NIGHT

The Tumwater School District if offering SAT Prep classes for Math and Critical Reasoning/Writing.

Math classes will meet from 6-8pm on Mondays beginning March 10th and the Critical

Reasoning/Writing classes will meet form 6-8pm of Thursdays beginning March 13th. All classes will meet at THS. The cost of one class is $75 or $130 for both. Registration and

payment can be done at your ASB office.

dents from surrounding schools for the opportunity to represent Black Hills High School DECA at the State Competition in Bellevue March 7th. The students performed incredibly well and the following students will be advancing to State

Summer Job Opportunity for Youth.

The Department of Ecology plans to hire an Ecology Youth Corp road crew in our area. To apply, you need to access

SAT Prep Classes for Juniors.

To help students better prepare for the SAT, the Tumwater School District is offering both Math and Critical Reasoning/

Writing SAT Prep Classes.

Math classes will meet from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Mondays and the Critical Reasoning/Writing classes will meet from 6:00-

8:00 p.m. on Thursdays starting March 10th. Last day is April 24th. You may sign up for the Math or Critical Reasoning/

Writing series for only $75, or both series of classes for a reduced rate of $130. Classes will be held at THS (a map will

be provided at the time of registration). Brochures are available in the Counseling and Front office.

Community Service Opportunities

The 26th annual KVA Tumwater Youth Basketball tournaments starts Saturday, Feb. 8th and will run for 4 week-ends. We need scorekeepers and timers to help out. This is an excellent way to earn community service hours. If inter-

ested, call Dave Vernon at 943-3200.

Valentines for a Veteran Monday, Feb 10th, Career Center.

There will be a Valentine for Veterans event in the Career Center after school. We will be making cards and take them

to Congressman Heck’s office for delivery to our local vets. This is a great way to spend time with your friends on a worthwhile cause. Sign up this week in the Career Center.

Chehalis River Basin Land Trust Work Party

Seniors and Parents, Senior Exit Interviews are scheduled for March 18-20th from 7:30am-10am. These are the only days we will schedule

This is one-on-one assistance with Financial Aid staff to help you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Come prepared with: 2012 tax returns or yearend income (2013-14 FAFSA) for both you and your parents (as

appropriate), and PIN (s).

Scholarship Information: All students should get in the habit of looking at the scholarship bulletin. While many are offered to only seniors, there

are opportunities for underclassmen. There are many more opportunities listed on our website under Scholarship Bul-letin.

*Imagine America Scholarship Students should meet the standard admissions requirements of the participating career college to which they apply. In

addition, the Imagine America Foundation offers the following four selection guidelines: Likelihood of successful comple-tion of postsecondary education, High school grade point average of 2.5 or greater, Financial need, Demonstrated vol-

untary community service during senior year. Each year, every high school in the United States and Puerto Rico may

nominate up to five graduating seniors to receive a $1,000 Imagine America scholarship!

STEM Scholarship Centralia College

If you are interested in pursuing a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math, Centralia College is offering a

great opportunity with a STEM scholarship. This scholarship provides full tuition/plus for a student pursuing degree in one of the above fields. Requirements for this scholarship are a minimum 3.0 grade in Pre-Calculus and two high school

Feb 14th Deadline The application can be found online at www.scholarshipamerica.org/wsecu. Winners are announced in May. Scholar-

ships are awarded in two categories: $1,500 for a two-year post-secondary education program and $2,500 for a four-

year program. Any WSECU member who meets the qualifications is welcome to apply. Applications are evaluated on academic record, financial need, community service/school activities and essay/letters of recommendation.

*Washington State Opportunity Scholarship

Feb.24th Deadline. The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS) supports low- and middle-income students pursuing eligible high

demand majors in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) or health care and encourages recipients to work in

turned to the Career Center by March 21st, 2:15pm. Applications available in the Career Center or at

*TwinStar Credit Union Scholarship March 31st Deadline

Applicants must be in good standing with TwinStar Credit Union, application must be answered completely. An unofficial transcript is required. Applications are available in the Career Center.

This scholarship is funded by individuals, foundations or businesses to provide college scholarships to students who will be attending an eligible four-year college or university in Washington State. This is an online application only. For ac-

*Tumwater Education Foundation Scholarships April 1st Deadline

The Tumwater Education Foundation offers multiple scholarships for seniors from BHHS. There is one application for all scholarships with supplemental criteria for each. Read the criteria carefully to make sure you qualify. You must include

the required supplemental information of each scholarship you are applying to. All applications must be mailed and

The Black Hills Cheer Team finished out their competitive season with SECOND PLACE at the WIAA State Cheer Competition! This is an incredible accomplishment, since this is the first year this team has entered competitions! We

all know how great our cheerleaders are and it was rewarding to qualify for the state competition. The girls spent the

last couple of weeks polishing up their routine and performed it almost flawlessly! One of the National Cheerleading Association (NCA) representatives even sought out one of our coaches to remark about how clean and sharp the girls

performed! The girls’ hard work truly paid off and they are elated to earn a SECOND PLACE TITLE!! !
