Owego Little League News

First Time Sign-Ups

First time sign-ups will be held Feb-

ruary 5 and 9, at Central Fire Station and

online until February 13

Owego Little League's major event of

the upcoming 62nd season is player reg-

istration for National, American, Modi-

fied, T-Ball and ASA Girls Softball and

Teener Baseball to keep the league

growing and successful.

For returning player registrations, use

the new online system until midnight

Wednesday, February 13. Go to the OLL

website http://www.eteamz.com/owego/

and follow the prompts for registration.

First time requires dad or mom or

guardian to bring with them a returnable

birthday certificate for the sign up at the

Owego Central Fire Station on North

Avenue, across from John's Fine Foods.

Player Agent Karen Vinti says her

volunteers will be in the fire station on

Tuesday, February 5, from 6:00 to 8:00

pm and again on Saturday, February 9,

from 9:00 am to 12 Noon.

League Treasurer Steve Lounsberry

says player registration time is a great

time to volunteer to become an umpire,

manager, coach, concession stand volun-

teer and ground crew helpers.

Because of the extraordinary volun-

teerism shown by the parents, OLL Pres-

ident Ken Winters says players have

never paid an OLL signup fee since

1952.

To play Teener Baseball in the

Southern Tier Baseball League, there is

a required $30 fee at the time of first

practice to cover those league expenses.

OLL Web Site 24/7

An important resource for parents

and players is the OLL's Web Site

www.eteamz.com/owego. Webmaster

Eric Hawkins posts updates and keeps

social media Facebook and Twitter

fresh.

Little League-International automati-

cally updates the OLL Web Site with

news from Williamsport. Find the stories

in a news box located just below the

banner at the top of the OLL Home

Page.

Among the new stories are the new

Little League Tee Ball Program de-

signed to promote activity, fun and fit-

ness, while teaching fundamentals, In-

formation on Child Abuse, Little League

Resources.

ArtSpace in Owego features Corning Artist

This month, ArtSpace Gallery in the

Tioga County Council on the Arts

building, 179 Front Street in Owego,

features the work of Vani Akula of

Corning, New York.

Akula paints using the alla prima (or

direct painting) technique, a wet-on-wet

technique used primarily in oil painting.

Alla prima painting is a unique way of

completing a portrait, as it forces the

artist to choose the essence for the piece.

This exhibition, AAKARA, Shapes,

includes alla prima portraits done both

from life and from still lifes, and

presents a dual perspective. More

images from Akula's portfolio are at

www.vanifineart.com.

A special reception at the ArtSpace

Gallery will be held as part of the 3rd

Friday ArtWalk on February 15, from

5:00 to 8:00 pm. The artist will give an

alla prima painting demonstration during

the reception from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.

Refreshments will be served.

Jr. will hold his 15th Annual Rigatoni

The Ti-Ahwaga Community Players

will present Edward Albee's Pulitzer

Prize winning play 'A Delicate Balance'

on February 8, 9, 10, February 15, 16,

17, and February 22, 23, 24 at the Ti-

Ahwaga Performing Arts Center, 42

Delphine Street in Owego.

'A Delicate Balance' is Albee's witty

take on the drawing-room comedy that

will have you laughing one moment and

anxious the next as he examines the

"delicate balance" involved in maintain-

ing marriages, families and friendships.

A well-to-do couple, Agnes and Tobias,

have their complacent lives with Agnes'

live-in, alcoholic sister, Claire, upset by

the arrival of longtime friends, Harry

and Edna, who are seeking refuge be-

cause some nameless terror has driven

them from their home and then by the

arrival of their daughter, Julia, whose

fourth marriage has just collapsed.

"Directing and presenting another

Edward Albee play is a challenge both I

and our ensemble cast embrace, director

Shawn Yetter said. "The Player's remain

committed to bringing lesser done works

with such raw and thought provoking

material to the stage."

The cast includes Jane Nichols as

Agnes, Keith Nichols as Tobias, Linda

Fenescey as Edna, Jim Osborne as Har-

ry, Stacey Jo Oropello as Claire, and

Sarah Jensen as Julia.

Shows start at 8:00 pm on Friday and

Saturday and at 2:00 pm on Sunday.

General admission is $18. Friday admis-

sion for students with ID cards is $10.

Sunday admission for seniors 60 and

over is $15. Fine wines, beers, soft

drinks and snacks are available to enjoy

at your table during the show, and there

isn't a bad seat in the house.

The show is underwritten in part Gal-

lery 41; Coughlin & Gerhart, LLP; Keith

A. Nichols MD, PLLC; Hess Express;

and Barry and Sharon Schecter. To re-

serve seats, call the Ti-Ahwaga Perform-

ing Arts Center at 687-2130 and log on

mation about the center.

Local Community Theater Group

Continues to “Give Back”

The Tioga Acting Guild, Inc. (TAG)

donated $250 to the local chapter of the

Salvation Army. On December 15 and

16, TAG put on a radio show entitled,

“It’s a Wonderful Life, a Live Radio

Play” by Joe Landry. The audience at

the former Nichols Elementary School

thoroughly enjoyed a journey back to the

golden age of radio with live sound ef-

fects and multiple characters being

played by only a small cast. It was defi-

nitely a different show from the typical

comedies that TAG usually presents to

its audiences. But it was wonderfully

portrayed and enjoyed by all who attend-

ed the event. Tickets were only $10 and

included a complimentary dessert.

TAG is a newly incorporated not for

profit community theater company with

an unusual mission. Its mission is to

continue to bring enjoyable, as well as

affordable, theater to the local communi-

ty while using some of its proceeds to

support local charities. Its slogan states

its purpose; “TAG, the ACT that gives

back”. TAG is lining up events for the

year that will entertain as well as benefit

the surrounding communities. You can

catch the next TAG show on March 15 -

17. They will be presenting a dinner

theater event with the hilarious comedy

“Cookin’ With Gus”, by Jim Brochu.

They will be donating a portion of their

proceeds to The Bridge. You can visit

TAG on Facebook and their newly

launched web site,

www.tiogaactingguild.com Visitors to

the web site will be able to keep in-

formed about current and future shows,

view past events and charitable activi-

ties, as well as purchase tickets online.

“ON THE RUN

AROUND THE

CLOCK”

I have been asked by the Porcari

family to share my recollections of my

lifelong friend, Fallen Owego Firefighter

and Croton Hose #3 Captain Matt

Porcari. I write through deep sadness but

consider this request an honor and

privilege.

Matt and I first met at a young age on

Delphine Street in front of his

grandparents’ house. Both our fathers

were members of the Owego Fire

Department’s firematic hose racing team

and Delphine Street is where the

practices were held. Hose races are timed

events where firefighters test their skills

in competition. We were the “hose team

helpers” and would roll and drain the

hose of water between the practice runs.

Matt was a “Flat Rat,” a name

affectionately given to residents living in

the “Flats,” an area of the village. I grew

up in “Turtle Town” but would soon

become an honorary Flat Rat after our

first meeting. I’d always had envy of the

tightknit Flats community. Many of the

families are pillars of the village--last

names like the Dunhams and Porcaris.

Flat Rats have certain qualities about

them, all of which are exemplified by

Matt. They always have each other’s

backs, never are afraid to voice and stand

up for their beliefs, and always, always

are there when needed. The motto, “Flats

against the world,” never has rung more

true than in difficult times like these.

Our generation of Flat Rats grew up

prior to the computer age. Most of the

time was spent outdoors playing and

fishing the Owego creek. There were

nightly “jailbreak” games, “lob ball” at

Owego Little League, whiffle ball across

the street from his parents, John and

Cheri’s house, tackle football in the

Bidwell lot on Delphine, and of course,

toilet papering the trees of George Street

the night before homecoming. Always in

the middle of things, Matt was one of the

ring leaders.

At age 16 we joined the Owego Fire

Department just like our fathers and

grandfathers before us. We went through

new member training together learning

the ins and outs of firefighting from our

dads. One of our first fires together was

on Thorn Hollow Road. My dad and I

came down Talcott Street in OFD’s

Mack pumper. As we turned the corner

from North Ave. we could see reflective

gear coming at us in the middle of

Talcott Street. As we approached, we

saw that it was Matt and his dad running

in their turnout gear to Station #3.

During our career there were many fires:

A structure fire by McMaster Street

where a cat jumped out of a closet onto

Matt while he was performing a search;

the old Owego Creamery fire also off of

McMaster Street we fought together with

our dads; a chimney fire on Montrose

Turnpike where Matt grabbed me as I

almost slid off the roof trying to get up to

the chimney; the Taylor Garage fire

where Matt was featured on the cover of

the Press and Sun Bulletin. When the

fire whistle sounded he was there to

serve our community time and time

again.

With the serious side of the fire

department comes the social side of the

fire department where Matt was also

leader of the pack. As soon as we joined

the department we started hose racing.

Every night we were on Delphine Street

practicing for the big Central NY races

that were being held in Owego that year

in 1995. Our practice paid off and the

“hose team helpers” became the hose

team champions as we went on to

become the youngest team to win the

tournament in history. We continued to

race ever since. At the races in Old Forge

recently, the hose team had bet that

whoever messed up a race had to jump

into a nearby lake. Matt, unfortunately,

missed a connection and gladly obliged

to the grin and laughter of the other

teams and spectators by jumping right in.

The hose team also participated in the

Firemen’s Association of New York

(FASNY) Winter Games where Matt

tackled a team of other participants into

the hotel pool after the games had

concluded in fun. A regular at Company

#3’s annual clambake, Matt was the king

of “jungle rules” volleyball. At Company

#3’s annual banquet we would all gather

and sing “American Pie” at the

conclusion of the event in honor of John.

These functions were always full of fun,

laughter, maybe a little bit of mischief--

and we always represented the Owego

Fire Department with pride.

Matt and I were also on the 1997 New

York State Class B Championship

Baseball Team, the first team to win a

state championship in Owego’s history.

Matt was never afraid to take one for the

team and I believe he led the league in

being hit by pitches. "As long as I get on

base," I can vividly remember him

saying. He grew up playing on the

Partners in Little League and turned into

a state championship first baseman.

There are countless other memories

and stories I can share but these are a

few that come to mind. He was someone

I knew if I called I could count on for

help no matter what it was. He was a

loving father to his children, big brother

to Tammy, and the love of his life,

Christina. He was both his father’s and

his mother’s son in so many ways. I am

so proud to have known him and so sad

he is gone. May he rest in peace and be

forever in our hearts. May his memory

and spirit help us to continue the same

selfless service to our communities, and

carry on his love of fun and life.

Tioga County Veterans News by Jim Raftis Students to Interview Veterans Students in Mike Bartlow's 8th Grade

Social Studies Classes at Owego-

Apalachin Middle School want to

interview men and women who

performed military service during any

conflict in the past 60+ years: World

War II, Korea, Vietnam, Cold War,

Persian Gulf, Iran, or Afghanistan.

It's part of a project called "In Harm's

Way." The students will do this project

totally outside of class in order to

receive full credit for this important

assignment.

What's the progress so far? Most

important is to continue to get the word

out to more veterans and arrange times

to sit down and talk. Veterans can also

share stories in a classroom presentation

the week before Memorial Day.

If you are interesting in telling

students about your service, contact

Glenn A. Warner Veterans of Foreign

Wars Post 1371 Memorial Chairman Jim

Raftis at (607) 687-4229 or

[email protected].

Riverview Manor in Owego has

veterans willing to participate. One of

them is Dominic Bencivenga (pictured

below), who served on a B-17 with the

3rd Emergency Rescue Squadron in the

Pacific Theater during WWII.

Vietnam and Korea Navy veteran

George Tobin of Valley Road, Owego,

has lots of experiences to share. WWII

Navy veteran Clarence Grimley now of

St. Augustine, Florida, formerly of

Newark Valley, called to say he's writing

a biography of his service aboard the

USS Leyte in the Mediterranean Sea.

YNC (AW) Retired UANR- Helen

Williams of Candor emails that she

would be happy to sit down to chat and

tell tall tales along with photos, albums,

etc. WWII veteran Al Elkin wants to

come to school and tell students his

stories.

Carolyn Quick of Catatonk Hill Road

shared an incredible The Greatest

Generation story about her dad, WWII

Army Staff Sergeant Albert R. Hyde.

Being a veteran is also a family thing.

Her brother is a Viet Nam Vet. Her dad's

grandfather from Owego was wounded

in the Civil War.

Her dad's story begins with voluntary

induction on January 17, 1941, at age 21

and ends September 14, 1945, at age 26.

In 4 ¾ years Hyde saw duty in the

Atlantic, the invasion of North Africa,

combat duty in France, Belgium and

Germany and concluded on the Elbe

River after the Battle of the Bulge.

Hyde's service record reflects these

awards: Bronze Star, Presidential Unit

Emblem with cluster, European-African

Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with

three Bronze Stars and one Silver Star

and One Arrowhead plus others and

awards from Belgium and France

"In Harm's Way" is looking for the

oldest veterans in our area.

Charlie Munroe tells the story of his

94-year-old dad, WWII Army Air Force

veteran Don Munroe of the Town of

Tioga. He flew a P-40 in North Africa.

He's still his son's business accountant.

Not bad for 94.

92-year-old WWII First Army

Veteran Robert J. Van Force was

wounded in the left hand during the

Tunisia Campaign at Kasserine Pass in

Feb. 19-25. He's a life member of the

Senator Libous hosts ‘Wing Night’

Senator Libous talks with Tioga County residents at wing night.

Last month, Senator Libous hosted

a wing night at the Railhouse in

Waverly. Nearly a hundred people

attended the event. Attendees enjoyed

wings and asked the Senator questions

about various issues such as the new

gun control law, casinos, and

hydrofracking. The wing night was a

rescheduled campaign event that had to

be postponed due to inclement weather.

“I love getting the chance to eat good

food with good people,” said Libous.

“That’s why I host gatherings like these;

it gives me a chance to talk with people

about what’s really important to them.”

It was a cold, dark and stormy night

in early February. I had just settled into

a stool at the Parkview and ordered a

pint of my favorite from Beth. The Solo-

mons were in their usual corner booth

next to the Arbes and the Scotts.

The Parkview Ghost had started to

play the piano by the wall. Expecting a

dreary winter song, I concentrated on

my plate of delicious food. The Ghost

suddenly started to belt out "You are my

sunshine" not very ghost like... so I

turned to see the Parkview's oldest visi-

tor wearing a bright red heart!

I sprang from my seat and whirled

around... could it be? I must warn the

others and alert the merchants in down-

town Owego. I ran to the Pumpelly

House to get a horse from the Taylors.

Yes, a fast horse it must be. The young

groom Billy Baust brought me a strong

Chestnut. I tried to think, was it one if

by land and two if by sea??? Or was it

one if by sea and two if by boat? I

swung up on the horse and galloped as

fast as lightning, towards downtown.

Waving my hat and shouting…"The

Valentines are Coming...The Valentines

are coming!"

I road down Front Street and Lake

Street, lights came on in the merchants

shops. The stores quickly cleaned their

windows to get them ready for the Val-

entines. Warm soothing, happy Valen-

tines that were said to warm the street 20

degrees! Of course no one knew about

Electro-magnetic kinetic energy way

back then. So that's how Ira McFadden,

saved the day, that very 1st time.
