From the Secretary Greetings from the Shropshire Office in 2012! Another year has passed. As each new year begins we look back on the successes of the last one and pat ourselves on the back for a job well done and thank those who made it possible. 2011 saw continued growing enthusiasm for Shrop-shire sheep in many settings. It continues to be a popular breed in the show ring and also in the club lamb venue. There has been interest in using Shropshires in other situations such as grazing in Christmas trees. The LambPlan system for production records is up and running and will provide useful data for creating more productive and efficient Shropshires. We had a wonderful national show event in New England in September. We reflect on the things that could be improved and attack that activity with new approaches. For those who like doing everything online, you may download from Shropshires.org two interactive forms to complete registra-tions on your computer and email them for a quicker trip to the office. You must have either money ahead on account or will soon be able to make an online payment through Paypal. Many people have asked about the possi-bility of finding the 125th Anniversary sweat-shirts. Although those were limited edition items, we plan on an opportunity to have available a few items with an updated logo. You will be able to go to Shropshires.org to view the selection and make the purchase through our supplier. This is supposed to be up and running by April, in time for the Classic and your summertime comfort! We welcome a new director, Alan Bruhin from Tennessee. We look forward to his ex-perience with working with youth groups and his family’s involvement with Shrop-shires. We thank his predecessor, Ralph

Lovely, for the time and effort he has put into his directorship. The National Junior Shropshire Sheep As-sociation is off to a good start after the for-mative meeting in Louisville. Look for these young enthusiastic people at events through-out the year and offer them your input and

support. They are the future of the breed and the industry. College bound seniors, and those already enrolled, are en-couraged to apply for a $400 scholarship. A minimum of two applicants will be selected to re-ceive these awards. Applications are available at Shropshires.org and are due in the office June 1.

Awards will be made payable to the appli-cant in November. The spring and summer sale season is ap-proaching quickly and begins with the Classic and Great Lakes event in May, the Spectacu-lar National Sale and Midwest Sale in June. The New England Sale follows in July. There are a few other smaller sales held. Consign-ors, sale managers and buyers should note that only NN genotype sheep can be sold in public sales. No sheep carrying spider gene will be offered. Some of these sales are held in conjunction with youth show events so it is imperative that the potential new youth buyers have no opportunity to purchase a hidden problem. As show season also nears, it looks like a reminder is needed that all Shropshires must be shorn tight to the knees and hocks. This applies to all sales, junior and open shows. Sheep found carrying a little extra strategi-cally unsheared areas will have to be reshorn before being allowed to show. How is everyone faring with the winter weather? The northwest has had rare snow-fall and cold. The northeast has been mild and wet. Hopefully the center of the country is gaining a little moisture to catch up with the dry summer.

A wonderful National Show was held at the Big E in September. Several breeders stepped out of their Midwest arena and came east to show their enthusiasm for Shropshires as both exhibitors and spectators. Some came as part of planned vacations and toured the New England area and have stories to tell of their visits. Some toured Boston, local winer-ies, antique shows, the local mountain zip line, Niagara Falls and recent flood-ravaged areas. Thirty-seven exhibitors were listed in

the entry book from the following states: Maine, New Hamp-shire, Mas-sachusetts , New York, M a r y l a n d , D e l aw a r e , Pennsylvania, Ohio and Il-linois. Spec-tators came from those states and

more, including Iowa and Washington. Ex-hibitors received gift bags of local goodies. One hundred eighty-one sheep were en-tered, exceeding the National Show of 1991. It was definitely the largest Shropshire show at the Big E in many years and lasted almost five hours. The quality was fantastic as it has been at almost every state fair this year. Kyle Thayer of Cummington, Mass., ably sorted the classes. The show staff was very efficient in producing an up-to-date show program listing the very entries in the ring and also allowed numerous class splits. Very unique pottery was awarded during the show and everyone came home with a trivet. The New England group worked very hard raising funds to help provide the awards and many thanks go to the multiple donors who came forward to help out. Following the show, Maine board-member Sandy Cross and his helpers performed a lobster dinner amidst the RV’s outside the barn. There was plenty to go around and every one enjoyed the clam chowder and corn on the cob, as well. Many thanks to the Big E staff and mem-bers of the New England Shropshire Asso-

Pair of Ewe Lambs class is shown as the evening progresses at the 2011 National Show.

Minutes of Board of Directors Meeting

September 16, 2011Sheraton Inn, West Springfield, Mass.

This meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Darrell Dockter. Members pres-ent were Mark McCabe, Jim Percival, Robert Dinsmore, Carol Rueber, Brad Slutz, Re Call and Secretary Becky Peterson. Not attend-ing were Tim Roberts, Bill Seals, Ralph Lovely, Bob Johnson, Cody Hiemke, Gary Brock-mann, Sandy Cross and Norbert Jackson. The minutes from the June meeting had been distributed previously by email. Mark McCabe moved, and Robert Dinsmore sec-onded, to accept them as presented. The min-utes were approved. Brad noted an email he had recently received stating a person from another breed was excited about coming over to Shropshires. There was further dis-cussion regarding the large shows at Ohio State Fair having large open and junior shows. The treasurer’s report as of August 31 had

ciation for all of their hard work in making this weekend very memorable. Special thanks go to Donna Woolam (Big E Director of Ag & Education); Debra Hopkins (Big E Sheep Superintendent); and New England Shrop-shire Association hard workers Bill Webster, Sandy Cross, Donna Washburn, Elaine Jaycox, Chip Hallet, Brit Hallet, Hallie Walker, Debbie Dane and Re Call. A buffet dinner was held at the Storrow-ton Tavern on the Big E grounds on the eve-ning before the show and it was very well attended. The atmosphere was very friendly and it was fun to watch people get to know each other. Many on the attendees brought along door prizes for a little enjoyment fol-lowing the dinner and business meeting. Young Massachusetts Shropper Kyle Har-ris helped with the drawings and distribu-tion. There was plenty to go around. When it was over, the walk back to the Livestock Complex was a long one. A few strings were pulled and several people were given a ride on the “camper guy’s” golf cart back to the barn area, saving them very tired legs.

their junior lamb retina scanned on the same day as the sale to be eligible to show in the youth program. There are only seven to eight yearling ewes reporting points. Mark noted that perhaps the yearling ewe class at the Spec-tacular junior show should go back to single points as there will be futurity yearling ewes available to purchase the next day and also at Sedalia. Mark confirmed that the yearling ewe futurity would continue to be one con-test and not regionalized in 2012. There was also discussion regarding the southern winter shows. To clarify: previous years’ futurity ewe lambs must be re-nom-inated and have fee paid prior to exhibiting yearling ewe during the following year. Voice & Promotion – All seems to be on track for the upcoming issue. Rinda reports that all four covers are sold. NAILE Sale – Entries have been sent or delivered and are available online. There has been response and Becky will have a catalog ready for Rinda to include in the envelope with the October Voice. The contract is signed and on record and the sale is set for 10 a.m. on the first Saturday of the NAILE Sheep Week. Performance – Jim Percival spoke with Cody about the status of the LambPlan. The transition is complete and it is now possible for participating breeders to get their infor-mation processed. Judge Evaluation – This project seems to be evolving to a discussion about breed type and the post show surveys seem more to reflect the exhibitors feeling on their suc-cess of the day. There was no action and it was decided to go through Louisville with it and possibly discontinue in 2012.

Old Business Fundraising – Jim Percival reported on the intended sale of Shropshire items on the Shropshire website. He had spoken with Phil Morris at Team Image (who pro-duced the items for the 125th Anniversary). The idea is to start with five items to make and sell. These would not conflict with any

also been previously distributed. The balance sheet showed total assets to be $49,986.51, only $29.33 less than this time last year. The Profit & Loss report showed a net income of $7,947.32 over expenses for the period. Becky also discussed the items in the “Re-stricted Funds” which showed a profit of $129.25 for the period. Becky noted that the expensive time of year is approaching with Louisville, etc. Also noted that registra-tions were down by only four and transfers were up by 18 head for this period last year. Jim Percival moved, and Brad Slutz seconded, to accept the treasurer’s report. The report was approved.

Committee Reports Budget committee – Re Call remind-ed committees their 2013 budgets need to be submitted at the June 2012 meeting. Youth and Junior Association – Mark noted again that there were no schol-arship applications received and that the directors for each region should encour-age eligible youth in their areas to apply in 2012. There will be a minimum of two $400 awards. The Ambassador Program is going well. Many thanks go to Hallie Walker for a job well done in 2011. She has worked hard to help get the junior association off the ground. It was decided to contact the NAILE junior exhibitors and remind them of the junior association meeting there. Mark reported that 116 ewe lambs were nominated for the 2011 Futurity. Discus-sion followed about the success of the re-gionalization of the Ewe Lamb Program. It was decided to keep on with the current method for one or two more years and then revaluate. Participation in the futurity by youth from the outlying areas needs to be encouraged. There was also discussion regarding the Great Lakes Sale. It was noted that as long as there are 10 ewe lambs this sale is alright for a futurity sale. It was noted that there were not a great number of futu-rity ewe lambs purchased at the Classic by Indiana youngsters. This could be partially explained by Indiana’s requirement to have

production of this book. Online Registration – There is a reg-istration form in the website that a breeder can complete and submit online. We would like to be able to process payments for such work via PayPal. Becky reported that she has PayPal set up but is not yet linked to any bank account. There was discussion about the type of PayPal service to be used. There is only an approximate 3% charge to the credit card user for PayPal to process pay-ments from PayPal’s site as opposed to an additional $30 monthly fee to process from ASRA website. Mark McCabe moved with a second from Jim Percival to have Becky complete the work with PayPal at the least cost. This motion passed. Spider Committee – At the June board meeting, a motion to allow only NN, spider-free Shropshire sheep to be sold at any public sale had been tabled. Jim Percival moved and Mark McCabe moved to un-table that motion. Discussion followed. Jim then moved, and Mark McCabe seconded, that no Shropshires be sold at any public sale that is not of the genotype NN. These sales include the major sales (Ohio Classic, Shropshire Spectacular, Great Lakes Sale and

junior fundraising items. Team Image would set the cost to ASRA and committee would determine a profitable selling price. Mem-bers would find these items on the ASRA website, linked with the Team Image store to make the purchase. Team Image would be re-sponsible for receiving payment and shipping items. Periodically, Team Image would send a sales report and profit to Becky. There would be no extra work in the office for this project except for a yearly report. Carol Rueber moved, with a second from Brad Slutz, to go ahead with this project for one year to make a minimum of $50 to continue. Discussion followed regarding the items to be offered as well as the artwork to be used. Darrell will see if Janet can work from the 125th logo and submit it to the board for approval and Team Image for pro-duction cost. Committee would select five items and they would be displayed on the ASRA website with a link to Team Image by March or April in advance of the Classic. The motion passed. New History Book – Glenn High has a list and contact info for the presidents and secretaries of the last 25 years. He will be gathering information over the winter for

Slick shorn rule reminder

Shropshire exhibitors and consign-ors are reminded that all sheep are to be shorn completely to the knees and hocks. Sheep found to be carrying ex-tra wool above the knees or hocks at a show or sale will need to be resheared before entering the ring for judging.

Midwest Stud Ram Sale), as well as any other minor sales such as the Penn-Mar Sale, Ten-nessee Sheep Producers, New England Sale or any other purebred sale where registered Shropshires are sold. All responsibility will lie with the consignor. Becky is to inform sale managers of this rule in advance of the 2012 sale season. Private treaty sales are not ad-dressed by this motion. 2012 NAILE Judge Nomination – As per the Annual Meeting in 2010, a ballot box will be at the Shropshire display area at NAILE in November. Any Shropshire exhibi-tor that is a current paid ASRA member will be able to nominate one judge on a signed card. Only members may vote and the bal-lot must be signed. The ballots will be read and counted prior to the next board meet-ing and the board will nominate a list to be submitted to NAILE. Indiana Directorship – The current director representing the Indiana region had previously requested that the regions be reevaluated. Becky had provided the board with statistics of number of sheep registered

and number of paid members for each state and region. The bylaws state that the regions be looked at every six years but it appears that had not been done for many years. The bylaws committee reviewed the number of directors in 2008 so actually any district changes cannot be made for six years un-til 2014. Bylaws also state that there will be 15 directors and therefore it would take a bylaw amendment to change the number of directors and the regions. Possible redis-

tricting was discussed but it will still be 2014 before this can be addressed again. It might be advisable to remove dates of region revi-sion from the bylaws once amendments pass.

New Business Non-Profit Status – Becky had noti-fied the board of an IRS notice that the non-profit status of the ASRA had been revoked for non-filing of 2007 Tax return. Becky had filed all returns since 2008. It was also not-ed that the dates for the ASRA fiscal year changed to use the calendar year at the be-ginning so a return for October - Decem-ber 2006 will also be required. Investigation shows that a letter explaining the events of 2006 and 2007 along with returns for those periods should help to reinstate the non-profit status. Mark is working on said letter with the Executive Committee in force in 2007. Becky will compile a return for that period from materials she received from in-terim treasurer George Buckham. 2012 National Sale – Brad Slutz re-ported that the Illinois Shropshire Associa-tion has requested to host once again the National Shropshire Sale in Springfield, Ill. in June, 2012. They are exploring some alter-natives to the usual banquet and meeting. Carol Rueber moved with a second from Jim Percival to accept the offer for the Shrop-shire Spectacular. Discussion followed. The motion passed. Brad then submitted the fol-lowing list of judges to be approved by the board: 1.) Bill Buckland, 2.) Aaron Crome, 3.) tie between Rod Crome and Mike Elsbury. Jim Percival moved with a second by Carol Rueber to accept this list of judges. Brad stated that the Illinois State Fair Shropshire show was a slick shorn show in 2011 and would be the same in 2012. He then men-tioned that the Illinois State Fair and Illinois Shropshire Association would be interested in hosting the National Shropshire Show in the near future, possible in 2014. He said there is a committee formed to generate a proposal in 2012. June Board Meeting - The next Board of Directors meeting will be held in Spring-

field, Ill. in conjunction with the National Sale. It was decided to ask Greg Deakin to try to get a meeting room at the Northfield instead of using the extension building on the fairgrounds. Election of Officers - Mark McCabe nominated Darrell Dockter for president. Brad Slutz seconded. Jim Percival moved to close nominations for president and the sec-retary cast one ballot. Jim Percival moved to nominate Brad Slutz for vice president with a second from Mark McCabe. Carol Rueber moved that nominations for vice president be closed and that Becky cast one ballot. It has been so noted that West Region direc-tor, Bill Seals, has not attended three con-secutive meetings. Bylaws state that such a member is to be expelled from the board. Since there is very little Shropshire activity in that region at the present time, it was sug-gested to leave that position open for now until suitable member is found. The executive session met to discuss the annual contract for Secretary Becky Peter-son. Re Call took minutes at this time. Af-ter some discussion, a motion was made by Brad Slutz and seconded by Re Call to renew her contract for 2012. Salary will remain at $14,000. The board did request a monthly update letter showing activity of the registry office. No meeting is scheduled at NAILE in 2011 but Becky will still request passes for the board members. No further business was presented be-fore the meeting. Carol Rueber moved to adjourn and Jim Percival seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 4:05 p.m.

Darrell Dockter. This meeting followed the 2011 National Show dinner at the Big E. Bill Webster of the New England Shropshire Association welcomed everyone present. The minutes of the 2010 Annual Meeting in Louisville were distributed at the beginning of the meeting by the secretary. Randy Rife moved to accept the minutes as presented. Bob Dinsmore seconded. There was no dis-cussion or corrections. The minutes were accepted. Becky then presented the ASRA treasur-er’s report as of Aug. 31, 2011. Balance sheet showed $49,986.51 in assets which showed a decrease of approximately $29 since 2009. Accounts receivable totaled $1,813.87. The 2011 net income of the ASRA is $7,947.32 as of Aug. 31. She noted that the expensive time of year was approaching and that profit will be reduced by the end of the year. Reg-istrations and transfers are steady for the period January through August with 2232 registrations (down four) and 784 transfers (up 29). There are 278 paid members for the period of which 116 are juniors and 162 are

returning or new senior members. Becky noted that an expanded financial report is available to anyone who requests it and a year end report will be printed in the Feb-ruary Voice. There were no questions from the floor. Brad Slutz moved to accept the treasurer’s report. Bob Dinsmore seconded. The report was accepted. Mark reported youth programs. The fu-turity program continues to grow with 115 ewe lambs nominated and 24 ewe lambs campaigned. 2011 is the first year that the ewe lamb futurity is operating on a regional basis. Sixteen yearling ewes were nominated in this second year. Point cards had been re-turned on eight. Hallie Walker spoke as the current Shrop-shire Junior Ambassador. This program has been very successful. She reported on the fund-raising activities of her position and asked that people participate in the 50/50 and trimming stand raffles. She has also been important in the formation of a junior as-sociation that will officially kick off in Louis-ville. She has shown a lot of enthusiasm and

Darrell gave a brief report of the board meeting held earlier in the day and then in-troduced the board members present. Becky reported that the Indiana Shrop-shire Association has re-nominated Nor-bert Jackson as the Indiana director. The Ohio Shropshire Association has nominated Jim Percival as one of the Ohio directors. The Penn-Mar Shropshire Association has re-nominated Robert Dinsmore as one of the directors of the Pennsylvania & South region. The New England Shropshire Association re-nominated Sandy Cross as a director for the New England & New York Region. Mark McCabe moved that nominations be closed for these regions. Randy Rife second-ed. Darrell called for a vote on these four directors. Mark McCabe nominated Alan Bruhin of Tennessee as the second director for the Pennsylvania & South region, replac-

ing Ralph Lovely whose term has expired. Bob Dinsmore seconded and moved that nominations be closed for this region. Dar-rell called for a vote. All motions passed. All five members have been elected to serve a three year term on the Board of Directors. Becky reported that there will be an opportunity for 2011 NAILE exhibitors to nominate judges for the 2012 National Show in Louisville. A suggestion box will be available in the display area and exhibitors who are paid ASRA members will each be able to nominate one judge on a signed bal-lot. Becky then reported on the plans for the Stars of Louisville Sale to be held Nov. 12 in Louisville. Entry forms are out and are due soon. The sale catalog will be included with the October Voice. Since there was no further business to come before the membership, Tom Slutz moved to adjourn the annual meeting of the members at 8:15 p.m. Sandy Cross second-ed and the meeting was adjourned.

Ohio. There were no January Ewe Lambs consigned so the power came from the Feb-ruary class which also had six entries. Both champions came from this class. Erik Mrozinski sold the class winner to Jansyn Van Horn of Kansas for $800. Dennis Avery sold a very popular lamb to the Merle Miller Family of Indiana for $1250. The high-selling ewe of the sale was the third place lamb, selling for $1700 to Richard Adams of Illinois from Sean Bryant. The fourth place lamb was consigned by John Melvin and sold to repeat buyer Luke Schultz for $550. Wayne Brooks got $300 for his lamb from Eli Sample of Missouri. Oscar Sweet sold the final lamb in the class to David Harrell for $500. The six February lambs averaged $850. There was one March entry from Chris-tine and Monica Ebert. She sold to Emily Petzel of Wisconsin for $775. The sale aver-aged $757.14 on the 14 head. The March lamb and all of the February

lambs were nominated for the 2012 Yearling Ewe Futurity and four of them were purchased by juniors and are eligible to compete in that contest. All yearling ewes were ultasounded for pregnancy on the morning of the sale. This was again a successful venue for the American Shropshire Registry Association. We thank the consignors for their quality animals and the buyers for their continued interest and support. Shropshire breeders are encouraged to select early an elite ewe or two for this sale in 2012. The sale committee will begin to gather entries during the summer. Entry information will be available from the office or on www.shrop-shires.org. With NAILE being one of the Shropshire crossroads in the country, it is very easy to arrange transportation to and from the event and care while there. For more infor-mation about this event, contact sale manag-er Becky Peterson in the Shropshire office.

New junior association formedBy Megan HardestyNJSSA Secretary

While at the North American International Livestock Expo, this fall the National Junior Shropshire Sheep Association was formed. The NJSSA is going to be a social group for junior members as well as a way for junior members to make decisions to better the breed. The NJSSA will have three member meetings each year, the Classic Sale in Eaton, Ohio, the All-American Junior Show, and the North Ameri-can International Livestock Expo.

The NJSSA will be run by a board of junior members, age 14 or older, that are elected from their regions, as well as the current Shropshire ambassador. The regions are Ohio, Indiana, Il-linois, Pacific Northwest, North Central, South-west, New England and New York, Pennsylvania and South. This year’s board has eight members. Josh Sargent is the 2011-2012 NJSSA presi-dent and serves as a director at large. He is 19 years old and lives in Bradford, Ohio. Josh goes to the University of Northwestern Ohio for agricultural mechanics. He grew up surround-ed by sheep; his family has been showing and breeding ever since he could remember. Josh joined his family in showing nine years ago. He started to breed about two years ago. He has won the futurity two years running. Cameron Snyder is the current vice presi-dent and represents the state of Illinois. He is the son of Claudia and the late Roger Snyder

Shropshire Futurities for 2012Ewe Lamb Futurity

For the 11th year, The American Shrop-shire Registry Association will sponsor a Shropshire ewe lamb futurity. The American Shropshire Association, in effort to get ju-nior members more interested and involved, has again decided to have a Shropshire ewe lamb futurity for 2012. The futurity will not only enhance the junior members ability to purchase extremely high quality breeding

stock but will also make it more beneficial for the breeders to consign their very best animals. The rules of the futurity are relatively simple and are outlined below. You can buy a top quality ewe lamb at one of the desig-nated sales that has been nominated for the futurity, exhibit the lamb at the shows you normally attend and then send in your re-sults on the point record form. A junior can add a top quality female to his or her flock, and possibly win back a sizable premium. The 2012 designated sales will include the following: Shropshire Classic at Eaton, Ohio; Shropshire Spectacular at Springfield, Ill.; Shropshire Midwest Stud Ram Sale at Sedalia, Mo. and Great Lakes Sale at Wooster, Ohio.

Yearling Ewe Futurity The American Shropshire Registry Associa-tion will sponsor a Shropshire yearling ewe futurity as part of our futurity system in 2012. The nominated ewe lambs purchased in 2011 by junior exhibitors and the ewe lambs nominated in the NAILE sale will be eligible for the yearling futurity. Another op-tion for juniors wanting to participate will be to purchase a futurity nominated year-ling ewe. The yearling ewe will need to be breeder–nominated ($20) and from one of the four designated sales. The NAILE sale

ewe lambs will not need to be renominated by the junior exhibitor. All other ewe lambs carried over that want to be a part of the yearling ewe futurity will need to be renomi-nated by May 1, 2012. The year 2012 will be the third year for the yearling futurity. The 2012 designated sales will include the following: Shropshire Classic at Eaton, Ohio; Shropshire Spectacular at Springfield, Ill.; Shropshire Midwest Stud Ram Sale at Seda-lia, Mo.; Great Lakes Sale at Wooster, Ohio.

Please welcome the 2012 Shropshire Ju-nior Ambassador, Jared Bruhin. He was elect-ed as Ambassador while in Louisville last fall. This program is in its fourth year and inter-est continues to grow. Jared is a junior at Sevier County High School in Sevierville, Tenn. He is enrolled in the honors course program and is very ac-tive in 4-H and FFA activities. Jared serves on the Tennessee Sheep Producers Associa-tion Board of Directors representing the ju-nior producers. He also is a member of the board in the newly formed American Junior Shropshire Sheep Association. He is well recognized in Tennessee for his sheep and leadership projects. He was named as the Shropshire Premier Exhibitor at the State Junior Expo for five out of the past six years. Jared will be working closely with the new junior association to help with its activities. He will also act to communicate with the ASRA Board of Directors. “…I would also want to work on promot-ing the qualities of the Shropshire breed of sheep,” Jared said. “The future of any organi-zation starts with its youth. I hope I would be able to promote the Shropshire associa-tion to young people everywhere to ensure the future of our breed.” You will get a chance to meet this young man as he works toward that goal. We are so glad to have him on board this year! Keep an eye out for him at the spring events!

Shropshire breeders play role in companies’ success

By Charlotte DinsmoreFor The Shropshire Voice

At Ceresville New Holland and Sheepman Supply Company we believe in Shropshire sheep, in 4-H and in FFA. We are blessed to have Shropshire breeders with a wealth of 4-H and FFA experience on staff to help our customers choose exactly the right prod-ucts to care for their flock. Amy Miller is the manager of the livestock supply side of the business. Amy and her family (husband, Jeff and daughters, Lizzy and Annabelle) tend and show a flock of regis-tered Shropshire and natural colored ewes on their farm in Keymar, Md. Amy is a 4-H leader in Montgomery County and the 4-H sheep superinten-dent for their County Fair in Gaithersburg, Md. Although her girls are just getting into 4-H we are sure they will make the most of their experiences in the program and perhaps have FFA in their future, as well. Working with Amy part-time is Ashley Fuss who is here after school and on week-ends. She brings a great attitude and a lot of sheep experience to her job. Ashley and her sister, Kaitlyn, are both super active in both 4-H and FFA and manage a flock of Shrop-shire and Suffolk sheep in nearby Walkers-ville, Md. You may have seen these capable young ladies exhibiting their sheep at the All-American Junior Show, the NAILE, or at local and regional shows in the mid-Atlantic area. Their very supportive parents, Dave and Christy, are always ringside. The third sheep expert on board in the

livestock supply department is also well-known to those of you that frequent the All-American Junior Show and the NAILE, or most anything sheep-related. Cheviot breeders will most definitely know Ashley Stevens as she is a newly elected member of the Board of Directors for the American Cheviot Sheep Society. Ashley has raised sheep since she first joined 4-H and has had great success with her Cheviots being the president of their ju-nior association for two terms and serving as their National Queen in 2007. Ashley is here as often as her schedule permits while she is working on her degree at the Univer-sity of Maryland. Our small ruminant experience base does not stop there as two young men in our equipment parts area each showed breed-ing sheep and market lambs during their 4-H

days. Parts manager Tom Taylor was active in the livestock judging program and represented Maryland on our State Livestock Judging Team. Robert O. Dinsmore, our son, is the sales man-ager for tractors and farm equipment here at the

dealership. He cares for 50 Hampshire and Shropshire ewes in Jefferson, Md. Robert’s 4-H and FFA experiences served him well as he traveled to Europe as the National Profi-ciency Winner in Sheep Production in 1993 and spent the summer of 1994 as an IFYE exchange in the United Kingdom. As when he was in 4-H, FFA and college, livestock judging is his passion. He is ABGA-certified to judge Boer goats and was re-cently certified to judge Dorpers. Since graduating from college he has judged breeding sheep, market lamb and Boer goat shows at all levels. A long-time customer once asked Bob if you had to be in 4-H or FFA to get a job at

Ceresville New Holland/Sheepman Supply. Bob’s response, “Not necessarily but it sure doesn’t hurt.” For those wondering how, when, and why Sheepman Supply Company landed in Frederick, Md. under the ownership of the Dinsmores, here is the rest of the story… Bill Hess started Sheepman Supply in 1937 in Barboursville, Va. He had a sizable flock and needed supplies and equipment for his own use. That need led him to sourcing product and then supplying it to other sheep producers. When Bill and his wife, Rosalee, decided to retire they sold the business to an employee who moved the business to Orange, Va., operating out of a warehouse his family owned. Sheepman Supply con-tinued there until it fell on hard times and ended up headed for bankruptcy in 1998. Bob and I both grew up on general live-stock farms in southwestern Pennsylvania that had some sheep. Bob was raised on a

dairy and grew up milking Jerseys and Brown Swiss. My home farm was Valley View Farm, now known as Orndorff ’s Belgians specializ-ing in registered Belgian horses and shipping semen. We had been customers of Sheepman Supply for years and decided it was a busi-ness that deserved a second chance at life. We decided to stomach tube it by pur-chasing the assets, phone numbers, and rights to the name from the Bankruptcy court of Virginia in October 1999 and rolling it into the Parts Department of Ceresville New Holland Inc., our farm equipment deal-ership in Frederick, Md. Convinced that the name had a following, we chose to keep the name that Bill Hess had worked so hard to establish and operate our livestock supply business under the Sheepman Supply banner. There were days and times in the first couple of years after the purchase that we wondered what we were thinking but over the long haul Sheepman Supply and the

farm equipment have complimented each other. Although we continue to specialize in small ruminants we have grown the scope of Sheepman Supply to meet the needs of other species and stockman, as well. The internet websites, www.sheepman.com and www.ceresvillenh.com and the little brown UPS trucks have enabled us to expand our trade area and improve our response time to customers. And, as Robert’s involve-ment in both segments of our business has grown, we look back and say, “Life is good!” We are always most grateful for our customers and our employees for without those there would be no reason for Sheep-man Supply. Our mission is to be true to ourselves, to our customers and to our suppliers by consistently providing reliable products and services in an efficient manner. Realizing that customers are Priority One, we strive to do business in such a way that Sheepman Supply will be here to take care of customers needs for the next 75 years. This year Ceresville New Holland Inc. will celebrate its 65th birthday and Sheep-man Supply will turn 75. We are honored to be the stewards of two businesses that have survived the test of time especially in this economic climate. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for these two busi-nesses that are growing old together.

The Life and Times of the Shropshire SpectacularBy Randy RifeBreed Historian

T    he Illinois Shropshire Breed-ers Association was orga-nized in the spring of 1959.

At this point, I would like to thank Mike Anderson, who provided the first 25 years of minutes from the Il-linois Association that Richard Craig had given him, which Nancy Quick had written up. A long-range goal, discussed at their initial meeting, was the estab-lishment of a state Shropshire sale. Five years later, in 1964, Larry Mead discussed the possibility of a Na-tional Shropshire Sale. The Illinois Shropshire Breeders Association approved his proposal, but did not set a date. Another four years passed and, according to their 1968 Association minutes, Everett Glasgow commented on hosting a National Shropshire Show and Sale. There was further discus-sion at their meeting in 1970, but an agreement was reached not to proceed at that time. Then, at their 1971 meeting, Enid Schlipf moved, and David Emmert seconded, that the Illinois Shropshire Breeders Asso-

ciation go on record as being willing to spon-sor a National Shropshire Show and Sale. After approval, Enid Schlipf was appointed National Sale Committee Coordinator. Lowell Douce, Tim Barnes, and I consigned and drove out to this magnificent event. I remember hauling Everett Glasgow’s Cham-pion Yearling Ram back to Ohio for Fred Heaton. He was an extremely tall ram for that day. This event was so successful they have continuously hosted a sale that third week-end of June for 40 years. In 1973, this sale be-came the Shropshire Extravaganza and I think it was held in Lincoln. In 1974 David Mad-dox was appointed sale manager and it was moved to Georgetown. In 1975 it became the Shropshire Spectacular and in 1976 the Spectacular moved its location to Blooming-ton with Enid Schlipf as sale manager. They started hosting a junior show in connection with the event in 1977. Gerry

and Heather Hough became sale managers in 1979 and then Lar-ry Mead with the “Sheep Breeder” took over those duties in 1981. In 1983, the Yearling Ewe Futurity Show was added. In 1984, the Spectacular moved to Peoria due to a conflict with a Corvette car show but soon returned to Bloomington for several more years. Some years later, when the fairgrounds at Bloomington was to be torn down, the sale moved to Springfield. Around this time, Greg Deakin, with Banner

Sale Management, started managing the sale. In 1978, with Emil being quite ill, the Hartz-

ell family held their last pro-duction sale at Bloomington following the Spectacular Sale. Everett and Libby Glasgow held a production sale in 1980 and Roger Snyder held sales in 1981 and 1982, all at the con-clusion of the Spectacular. Through the late ‘70s and throughout the ‘80s, the Shropshire Spectacular was the highlight of the year for Shropshire breeders. Several of these sales had nearly 200 entries. I overheard Fred Buckham of Michigan (that’s George’s uncle) remark mul-tiple times that “there are two hours each year to sell Shropshires; in Bloomington, Illinois the third Saturday

ers went to buy their new stud ram and were not disappointed. Powerful females have also always been available from this sale. I’m not sure what year they started having the show on Friday, but this allowed more time for an expanded junior show, time to visit with folks from all over the country, more time to better evaluate the sale offering and an op-portunity to relax a bit prior to the banquet. Sometime in the mid-80s, Dennis Avery and I got acquainted and became life long friends. His youngest son, Milan, and our son, Justin, were six or seven years old. Both of our families were staying in the Bloom-ington Holidome, we met around the pool, sauna, and Jacuzzi

with our boys. Nearly 30 years of this genu-ine friendship blossomed because of the Shropshire Spectacular. Edison Shippy from the northeast cor-ner of Indiana, a past president of the Indi-ana Shropshire Association, along with his son Eddie, were always at the Spectacular. Julie and I stopped to see Edison last Sep-tember and had a very nice visit. While we were there, his son, Eddie expressed en-thusiasm for getting back into some Shrop-shires. That “fire in the belly” fueled by the Shropshire Spectacular weekends and all the good friendships built around folks with Shropshires doesn’t go away! For many years, Skip Warren would take the train to Illinois each June for the Spec-tacular. Julie and I, on several occasions, gave him a ride to the banquet and back

afternoon of June!” Year after year, breeders consigned great sheep and wonderful sales resulted. Breed-

to the hotel. He told me last fall, that at age 78, he still owns 20 Shropshire ewes. He says “If you have animals and therefore a reason to get up and out of the house each day, it keeps you young!” Colby, a young shining star of our breed, who started building a Shrop-shire flock just three years ago, will carry on Skip’s philosophy and enthu-siasm throughout his lifetime. The annual trek, the third week-end of June, to Illinois, no matter the location (whether it was in Lincoln, Georgetown, Peoria, Bloomington, or Springfield) brings folks together for several reasons. We all love to raise sheep! We appreciate Shropshires with their attributes and demeanor and above all we relish the oppor-tunity to come together to renew cherished friendships.

~ In Memory ~Ruth D. Dirlam

Ruth D. Dirlam of Mooresville, Ind., passed away on Oct. 29, 2011 at Select Hospital in Indianapolis. Ruth was born June 13, 1929 in Patricks-burg, Ind. to the late Eb and Nora Hauser. She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Jasper, two sons, John (Carol) of Mooresville and Mark; two grandchildren, Lindsay and Matt,; a brother, Bill Hauser, brother-in-law Dr. James Dirlam, sister-in-law Norma Dirlam, sister-in-law Peggy Hauser and eight nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Hauser. Ruth helped Jasper care for their beloved Shropshire sheep flock and border collies and assisted during lambing season for many cold winters. She travelled to sheep shows across the country with Jasper during his tenure on the Board of Directors of the American Shropshire Registry Association. Ruth graduated from Patricksburg High

School in 1947 and attended Indiana State Teachers College. She married her classmate, Jasper, in 1950, and they moved to Mooresville later that year. She worked at Stuart Warner before she and Jasper left for Camp Roberts in California. While in California, Ruth worked at the Chaplin’s Office until Jasper was transferred to Fort Benning, Ga. for Air Borne training. She then worked for Burnham’s Van Service until Jasper’s discharge date. Upon returning to Mooresville, Ruth’s primary mission was to take care of Jasper and her children. She spent 20 years volunteering for the blood drive, as an election worker and at Miller’s Merry Man-or. Over the years, she worked part-time as a substitute teacher at Monroe-Gregg Elemen-tary and Madison Elementary, at Diamond Chain, and at Public Service Indiana Energy. More recently, Ruth was heavily involved in her grandchildren’s lives. She never missed any event they were involved in; track meets, basketball games, Little League, and 4-H sheep shows at the county and state fairs. Services were by Carlisle-Branson Funeral Service & Crematory in Mooresville, and the funeral was held at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Plainfield with burial at Worthing-ton Cemetery. Contributions can be made to Ruth’s Circle at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 1001 Concord Rd., Plainfield, IN 46168. www.carlislebranson.com
