The Church on the Avenue Has Launched!

Sunday, January 8, 2012 was official “Launch Day”, the Sunday we began holding weekly services, for the Church on the Avenue. Everything went great! We had about 120 people present with 24 kids in Children’s church alone! At least half of them were from the community where we have planted the church. Thank you church family for all of your prayers, support and encouragement over the past 9 months as we all worked together to get this work started.

As I have been describing this new church to people I tell them it is a church where no one has any other agenda but the Lord’s agenda. He has assembled a group of spiritually mature believers who have a burden for reaching out in love to others. As a result we’ve had several families from the community come to the church and stay. Let me tell you about two of them. One family is comprised of two sisters who are single moms with three kids between them. One works part time and the other is without a job presently. Since they could not provide much of a Christmas to their kids several church members stepped up to fill the gap. As a result their children each had several gifts to open on Christmas morning and both sisters had a ham dinner with all the fixings to go with it. Another family with three children who go to the school where we meet have an Episcopal background. They continue to come because, as mom puts it, “My children have never liked church but they love it here!” She told us that one of the kids cried on Christmas Eve because they were out of town and couldn’t be with us for our service. Praise be to God for allowing us to be used to reach people with His love!

In February we are planning to start a midweek AWANA program, student ministry and adult Bible study class. It will be held at Mary Munford Elementary School (where we meet for Sunday worship) on Thursday evenings. Our plan is to begin on February 9 and meet every other week for the first three months before going to a weekly schedule. In the months ahead we will be structuring our discipleship procedures and begin work on a constitution and by-laws. Please continue to keep us all in your prayers.

Gratefully yours,

Dear Church Family and Friends,

What a great start to the New Year! We commissioned our Church on the Avenue folks on the Sunday morning that was the first day of the New Year. We brought forward those that were heading out to make TCOTA their new church home, as well as those who were planning to help out for a season and then return to Winn’s as their regular church home. We prayed for them and sent them out to make a difference for our Savior. The following Sunday, they had a large and energetic group there, and we had the same at Winn’s! God is already, rapidly, replacing those that we sent out.

With the changes in our staff configuration brought about by the launching of a new church, some are wondering what we will look like staff-wise heading into this upcoming season of our church’s life. Well, I am happy to tell you that this has been a matter of ongoing prayer and it looks like some great possibilities are shaping up! I will continue to work with our excellent personnel committee and deacons to develop a plan that I hope to submit for congregational approval in late February or early March. I believe that our future is brimming with potential, and that we may have to run a little to keep up with all that God will be doing to us and through us.

Keep it all in prayer!

With anticipation, Pastor Jeff

Greetings Church Family,

We are approaching the middle of winter and it is very cold outside. This is a time of the year that everything appears to be lifeless outdoors, but it’s not. Just under the surface life is gathering its strength and is making preparations to re-emerge with beauty and vitality. I am so looking forward to the new life of Spring and the colors that it brings – straight from our amazing Creator’s design for creativity and variety.

Just like Creation goes through different seasons at specified times each year, the Church does as well. We are coming up on Valentine’s Day, a time of year that we typically focus on relationships with the ones we like or love. It is a perfect time of year to refocus on what God desires our relationships to look like.

For married couples it is an opportunity to show your love for each other by being overly considerate and to make sure that your spouse knows that they are the one and

only desire of your heart – humanly speaking of course. God is always to be # 1 – He deserves nothing less!

For our Youth we will be going through a True Love Waits emphasis. True Love Waits is a program that emphasizes that sexual purity is a must in every Believer’s life. It reveals the potholes in the road to true happiness that need to be avoided and also exposes the devil’s lies of immorality. But it also

goes a step further…it shows Grace. We have a God that loves to show mercy and Grace. For those that have made wrong choices concerning sexual purity, True Love Waits seeks to show them God’s redemption and how they can be forgiven and move on serving Christ with a renewed heart.

We will be covering TLW on Wednesday nights in February. Also, on Wednesday nights the Youth have begun meeting in the sanctuary at 6:30 until 8 pm. It is a great opportunity because we have outgrown the trailer that we were using. It also frees us up to increase our worship team that provides music while we worship. We are about to increase to a 9 person team from two. That will make a huge difference in the depth of the sound as more instruments can be added. I want to say a special thank you to Alexa Madison and Holly Bard for their service to our Lord in carrying the weight of the worship team up to this point! They will continue and more will join them. Also, the weight of the service is now truly a Church service for our Youth. We begin with prayer and announcements, we occasionally participate in team building exercises and then we engage in 15+ minutes of praise and worship followed by a fully prepared sermon each week that is tailored in its application to where the Youth are in their walk with the Lord. After that our Amazing Youth Small Group Leaders take their groups separately and seek to go deeper into what was covered in service in a private setting where the groups can share and pray together without interruption.

We also celebrate milestones in our Youth’s lives such as birthday parties, graduations, and major achievements afterwards with cake. (We don’t eat in the sanctuary or on carpeted areas).

Please pray for more opportunities to bring in more youth on Sunday and Wednesday nights to Winn’s. We are seeking to influence the whole community for the Kingdom of Christ!

Love In Christ,Pastor Doug

Here we are in February with many things coming down the line for our Awana Club. This month four T&T teams will represent Winn’s Baptist Church at the annual Awana Bible Quiz competition, Saturday February 4th at Goodwill Baptist Church. The clubbers will compete against other kids their age from around the Greater Richmond area, in Multiple Choice, Speed Rounds, and Written Quizzing. The T&T clubbers and BQ coaches began preparing for this event at our first meeting in September. Also, in February, we will hold our 4th Annual Awana Grand Prix, where the Clubbers from Sparks and T&T along with Awana leaders race little wooden blocks, designed to look like cars, down an inclined ramp that represents a drag race track to see who has the fastest car. Please come, just for the fun of it and support the clubbers and leaders during this event.

The Awana Games are just around the corner. The clubbers from Sparks and T&T will have fun playing games they learned during Awana game time each Wednesday we met for club. The clubbers compete against other clubbers from around the Great Richmond area. Even though this is a time of competition, the clubbers have a lot of fun participating in the Awana Games.

We are looking for more helpers in the Awana program and would love to have you help where God might be calling you to serve. The joy that comes from hearing one more child recite the word of God is indescribable, seeing one more leader offer words of

encouragement to a child is priceless. Having one more child who does not know Jesus attend an Awana Club meeting is one more soul to be won for Christ. Ask yourself this question, “What is your One More?”

Mark on your calendars, September 15, 2012, the Awana Conference will be hosted at Winn’s Baptist Church. More information about this event will come in future newsletters and posted on the Awana bulletin boards around the church.

Awana Commander Jerry

Winn’s holds regional Children’s Ministry ConferenceWhy would 46 Sunday School, Children’s Church, VBS, AWANA, and Good News Club teachers from Winn’s Baptist Church give up their whole day on a beautiful Saturday? (it did get up to 61 degrees on that day!) Why would 69 additional Children’s Ministry leaders from 50 churches across VA and the D.C. area do the same? The answer is because all 125 leaders are passionate about the call on their lives to reach and teach kids about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! We are so proud of all the kids’ teachers who came to sharpen their teaching skills by taking classes that taught them how to minister to hurting children, make a Bible Verse POP, use object lessons and puppets, reach this iGeneration, lead a child to Christ, teach kids about missions, and how to use the new Children’s Ministry Bible that were given at the training. The event was staffed by the Child Evangelism

Missionaries from all over this region. Please pray for Winn’s Children and Preschool Ministry leaders and take a chance to thank them for all that they do to make an eternal difference in the lives of so many children at Winn’s Baptist Church.

Our Music Ministry exists to provide an environment where every believer can develop a lifestyle of personal worship, participate in dynamic corporate worship, and where non-believers are confronted with the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a creative, compelling way.

Several of our folks from the Music Ministry have gone to be missionaries at TCOTA, to assist in their Music Ministry or in other areas of the church that are needed, making a difference for our Savior.
