Shelly Bartek’s unique impressionistic fine art niche combines a loose painterly

style using oil and reflective gold leaf. Her original art, and prints are popular &

loved by art collectors, corporations, and galleries. Beginning as an illustrator earn-

ing top commissions worldwide, she now creates work directly with galleries to

make her art available to the public.

Educating herself by working aside great artists, traveling

and gaining knowledge of mystical symbolism & philoso-

phy both in mythology and historical iconography. Shelly‘s style in the fine art world is influenced by the master artist Vincent Van Gogh & Gustav Klimt. Although her subject matter varies, her intention is to portray Gold Illuminations of Light. Her paintings not only reveal the surface of the objects, they can also reflect their hidden meanings

February 2011 Page 3 Por t fo l io

During WWII Hitler stole millions of dollars worth of art from museums and private collectors. After the war he was going to create his own museum to rival the Louvre, whose collection, by the way, is made up of art stolen by Napoleon. Many of these pieces of art were found by a small group of Americans in the mili-tary whose job it was to find the art and return it to its rightful owner, be it a private individual or a coun-try. This is the first time that stolen art was returned to its rightful owner rather than being kept by the country

who retrieved it. However, there are thousands of artworks still missing. One of these is the Amber Room.

That's right, an entire room made of amber was stolen from Catherine's palace in St. Petersburg, Rus-sia. The original Amber panels were given to Peter the Great by the King of Prussia in 1716. This room has

been totally reconstructed using a ton of amber and is now on display in the palace.

Amber is not a gem but fossilized tree resin, forty to fifty millions of years old. Sap hardened by time

into a gem. It can be carved which is exactly what they did on the panels of the Amber Room.

THANK YOU SISTER BARB AND MEMBERS OF THE TELEPHONE COMMITTEE

February 2011 Page 5 Por t fo l io

Our members have become more mobile, taking vacations not only in the U.S, but also to destinations internationally. And time away is sometimes for weeks or an

extended period of time.

We applaud them for doing what they love. However, it has created a need for us to evaluate how we make reservations for OAI meetings. After discussions over the last few months it was decided there was a need to try something different.

Please see the recommended procedure with the luncheon information.

Thank you to the members of the telephone committee: Lois Pillen, Donna Ament, Ann Devish,

Registration for our "Artists in Residence" Art Show at the Residence, 12123 Emmet St., on January 31 was an icy, cold day, but 26 artists braved the weather and we hung 70 pieces for this show. Our judge, Littleton Alston, braved the blowing snow and came out to judge the next day on February 1, and he spent a great deal of time deciding the winners. He requested honoring ten additional artists with a "Judge's Award" to en-courage some of the pieces he felt were deserving of recognition and to encourage more of us to keep on making our art. I also want to thank my art show committee for helping with registration and the reception,

Debi Plog, Marilyn Beig, and Pat Lontor.

GENIE SCHAFER ART MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Applications MUST have been received by February 1, 2011

This was a great opportunity to help someone attend a workshop of his or her liking. Genie loved and at-tended many workshops, where she learned, laughed and made new friends. Genie was a lovely person and

it showed throughout her beautiful art work.

Recipient(s) shall be picked on February 19, 2011 (Genie Schafer‘s Birthday). The Scholarship(s) shall be

given at the February meeting of the Omaha Artists. Dorothy Tuma [email protected]

Date : Feb. 1, 2012 My reflections on the exhibition titled Artists in Residence

Littleton Alston Judge

Overall this was a very pleasant and revealing experience. First a service to art to have it exhibited in the

home. It can help define a sense of place and ownership for the collector and become a wonderful refiner of

taste. The works selected first to fourth place winners were very good and could hold their own in a gallery

exhibit setting, one which would withstand a critical review. The works selected for Honorable Mention exhibit

strong effort and great promise. No honorable mention should be discounted, works receiving this award were

closely scored to the place winners and reflect a good command of their chosen subject and process.

I elected to include a judge‘s award to bring attention to the artists showing promise and great effort. To the

artists in this award category ― keep working ― you have great potential but most of all be patient.

Thank you, Littleton Alston

Bio Littleton Alston maintains a sculpture studio in Omaha, where he also is an associate professor in sculp-ture at Creighton University. His work has been exhibited in Omaha, Chicago, Santa Fe and many other cities throughout the region. Some of his recent public art commissions include ‗Jazz Trio‘, Dreamland Park in Omaha, ‗Martin Luther King, Jr.‘, King Plaza in Omaha and ‗George Washington Carver‘ for the World Food Prize Foundation headquarters in Des Moines. Littleton holds a B.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth Univer-

sity and an M.F.A. from the Rinehart Graduate School of Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

AND THE SHOW WENT ON..........

Thanks to the members of the show committee, the judge, The Designer's Gallery and 26 artists, the show

went on through below freezing temperatures, and almost blizzard. Bravo!!!!

Repeat Reminder of our Name change.

"ART BRIDGE" (formerly "Sudanese Art Project")

This name change is overdue as the ESL students attending our art classes are no

longer all from Sudan. Many now come from Somalia, Burma and Thailand. We see

ourselves as artists "bridging" the obstacles of language and culture which these newly

arrived refugees face. Our new name reflects this outreach.

Pat Lontor will be teaching scratchboard on Wed. Feb 9th; 9:00 to 11:00 am at Harvest

Community Church.

Thank you to Harriet Otis and Marilyn Bieg for donating matt boards for our lessons.
