Valentine’s Day and candy are a match made in heaven.

Among the earliest Valentine’s Day gifts were candies. The

most common were chocolates in heart shaped boxes. As an elixir for love, chocolate has been believed throughout

history to bring smiles to the broken-hearted and to prompt

amorous feelings in both men and women. In the 1800’s

physicians commonly advised their lovelorn patients to eat

chocolate to calm their pining. It is believed that Madame du Barry served it to all her suitors

Casanova consumed chocolate instead of champagne to

induce romance; and Montezuma, the king of the ancient

Aztecs, believed chocolate would make him virile. Never underestimate the power of candy. Did you know

that every part of your body responds favourably to the

gifts of wine and chocolate? And as you might have

guessed, the properties of dark chocolate are similar to

wine and deliver beneficial treatment to the skin as well. We, here at Sweet Regards, believe that candy (and

especially chocolate) is very powerful. It can calm,

soothe, brings up wonderful memories and is fun to

share with friends. Life is short – make it sweet!Come in to check out our exciting Valentine specials. Sweet Regards ......your total candy experience!

Happy New Year one and all. 2011 has arrived and with it, as is the custom with many of us, comes a list of resolutions. The Christmas Season always seems to be a time for indulgence and at the top of many New Years Resolution lists is “Get in Shape”. The spike in gym memberships at the beginning of a new year attests to this. Unfortunately many of us will buy the membership, attend the gym for a short while, if at all, and then not bother to keep it up. Don’t despair, there are lots of other ways that you can stay in shape and many of them cost very little. Some are even free!

Medicine Hat has a wonderful trail system and no matter where you live in the city you have access to a trail whether it is just out your door or a short drive away. Police Point Park has some wonderful trails in a completely natural setting. During the summer the trails are well used. What about the winter? Yes it may be a little bit cold and there may be some snow on the trail but that is no excuse. Bundle up and get out there! A one hour walk through the snow can burn 270 calories. And best of all, going for a walk costs you nothing and you can walk with friends. If you are worried about slipping on the snow and ice, use some walking poles. Not only will they help with stability, but they give your upper body a work out and help to burn a few more calories.

Just walking isn’t challenging enough for you? Try cross country skiing or snow shoeing. There is a cross country ski trail located within city limits at Police Point Park. An hour of cross country skiing can burn 700 calories and an hour of snow shoeing 560 calories. If

you do not own any ski equipment or snow shoes, just stop into the Nature Centre located within Police Point Park and we can rent you everything that you need. An hour of skiing or snow shoeing will only cost you $4.00. And, for those that are really adventurous and like to race down hills at break neck speeds, there is down hill skiing available in the Cypress Hills less than an hour drive from Medicine Hat.

Tobogganing is another winter activity you can enjoy while staying fit and burning those calories away. One hour of racing down a hill on a toboggan can burn 420 calories. Although I suspect that it is the walk back up the hill that is what really burns those calories! There is a great toboggan hill in Kin Coulee Park and numerous other hills throughout the city that are suitable for tobogganing. There are several outdoor skating rinks throughout the city as well as some indoor rinks for those who prefer to glide on the ice. An hour of skating can burn 300 calories. For those creative types, build a snowman. Or a whole snow family. Who would have thought that rolling snow into balls and then stacking them one on top of another was such great exercise! Snowman building can burn 250 calories. And finally, don’t forget that you are responsible for clearing snow from sidewalks in front of your home, and of course your driveway. Instead of looking at it as an onerous task, think about all the great exercise you will get. Shoveling snow for an hour can burn 400 calories.

All these activities are great ways to supplement that gym membership that you may or may not be using. Please note that all numbers

given for the amount of calories burned are approximate. Each person is different and you may burn more or less calories. The point is that you will burn calories by getting up and getting active. Please remember to dress appropriately for weather conditions and get out and enjoy yourself this winter.

Just like putting the right fuel in your vehicle, we should put the right food in our bodies for our body to perform properly. If you put gas in a diesel vehicle, it will be sluggish if it runs at all. In today’s world of fast food we are putting the wrong fuel in our bodies. We are on a hamster wheel. We go round and round and can’t get off because our diet is so poor thus making us tired. The more bad foods we eat the more we crave. We are too tired to exercise. The time to change is right now! If you can do a little of each part of the pie below you will get off the hamster wheel.

The Entire Health Pie:

Some Raw food items I make are:• Stuffed Mushrooms • Portobello Steaks • Almond Flax Crackers• Almond stuffed peppers• Vanilla Almond Milk• Greek Salad without the feta• Salt & Vinegar potato chips

You may have heard that alkaline water is good for you but this is far from the truth. The only way to get the body alkaline is with good nutrition. Water goes

into the stomach and those stomach acids start changing the ph right there. Water is important to flush and clear out toxins. Our body is approx. 55% to 70% water. You should drink ½ your body weight in ounces everyday. As it’s important to drink the right amount of water each day, it’s also important to feed our body the proper fuel. You have heard, “You are what you eat.”

Majority of Raw and Living Foods are alkaline. For a list of these foods, google alkaline foods vs. acidic foods. All processed, heated and cooked foods are acidic. The tools needed for Raw & Living Foods are a dehydrator, high-powered blender (I like the blendtec), and a food processor (a cheap one will work fine). You can purchase the dehydrator and blender at Icy Mountain Water.

Dr. Richard Schulze says, “There are no incurable diseases. If you are willing to take responsibility for yourself and your life, you can heal yourself of anything.”

The most important thing in life is your health. You

can’t buy new body parts at the store. People always say to me, “oh that’s too much like work, I just want to live”. I say I want to live too and that’s why I do it. Start today and join the many people taking control of there own health. For more information on Raw & Living foods contact myself at Icy Mountain Water Co.

Enjoy & Live Life to the Fullest!

Water

Hello, my name is Charlotte. My family owns and operates Icy Mountain Water Co. We started Icy Mountain Water in 1992 for health reasons. Two years ago in February, I found myself tired out. I have always been a vegetarian but found my diet was slipping away. I was busy so I did not have time to prepare my

food properly. A friend let me try some raw food crackers that she made herself. At that time I realized its time to step up my diet. I started reading everything about Raw Food that I could get my hands on. As soon as I started reading I was motivated to start Raw & Living Foods. Once you heat your food over 110 degrees Fahrenheit, it is no longer alkaline and the heating process destroys the digestive enzymes. Once heated, you have changed the molecular structure of the food and it is now acidic. The majority of people are acidic. The ideal pH level for the human body is between 6.8 and 7.5. When your body is at this pH, your body cells will oxygenate and cause you to heal at a faster rate. When cancer cells are put in a test tube with acidic fluids they will multiply. If you put those same cancer cells in a test tube with alkaline fluids they will die. A proper body pH balance will allow the body to heal itself, the way god intended. Raw food is living food and it only makes sense to eat this way because our bodies are alive. Cooked food is dead food.

SOME BENEFITS FROM RAW & LIVING FOODS ARE:

COOKED Food is Dead Food

• Lose weight.• Get fit.• Look and feel younger.• Regain that youthful

energy you once had.

• Improve your health after a lifetime of abusing your body.

• Heal yourself without surgery or drugs.

• Live a more fulfilled life.• Stay healthy and in

shape without spending hours working out and starving yourself.

Your health is number one. Think, “If it’s going to be it’s up to me.” Only you can do it. Here is a recipe for you to try.Broccoli Salad W/O Bacon & It’s Still Awesome!5 cups chopped broccoli½ cup red onion*1-cup sunflower seeds½ cup raisins (optional)Dressing:

*1-cup cashews3 tbsp honey2 tbsp raw apple cider vinegar¼ tsp salt

¼ cup water

Blend the dressing together in a blender. Then pour over the broccoli. Mix together with your hands; this really does make it taste better. Sit and enjoy!

* Soak nuts in water for 1 hour to release the enzyme. Majority of nuts have an enzyme inhibitor and must be soaked in order to digest.

Four-year-old Mitch loved candy almost as much as his mom Ann did. He and Daddy had given her a beautiful heart-shaped box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day. A few days later Mitch was eyeing it, wishing to have a piece of it. As he reached out to touch one of the

big pieces, Ann said to him, “If you touch it, then you have to eat it. Do you understand?”

“Oh, yes,” he said, nodding his head. Suddenly his little hand patted the tops of all the pieces of candy. “Now I can eat them all.”JO
