Thank you for reading this month. 2010 will prove to be a life-changing and record breaking year for us. Already we are experience-ing the signs. In December we launched 247PraiseRa-dio.com. Out of the gate,

the station broke records. According to Live365, the largest provider of internet radio in the world, 247Praise Radio had seven times more listeners in its first two months than the average internet radio start up and in January they ranked us the fourth most listened to gospel station. Listeners from 64 countries logged in January! We are reaching further than we ever have with the Good News. Every-day, listeners email us telling us they like us and enjoy listening. We are con-stantly adding music and programming to inform and to bless you our readers and listeners.

Youngstown, OH - On Saturday, January 30, 2010, the international church world, as well as the enter-tainment industry and many leaders worldwide suffered a great loss when

Bishop Norman L. Wagner departed this life to be with the Lord. Bishop Norman L. Wagner was Pastor of Calvary Ministries International (formerly known as Mt. Cal-vary Pentecostal Church) from March of 1971 until his passing on January 30, 2010.

He established a private school, Cal-vary Christian Academy, to meet the needs of families who lacked access to quality and cutting-edge education. This school excelled and graduated many individuals who are now making their mark on the world; Executives, Professionals, Sports & Entertainment Figures, and Leaders including Youngstown’s current Mayor, the Honorable Jay Williams.

In 1984, Bishop Wagner spearheaded a building project. Calvary Towers were erected and today still stand as a monu-ment to Bishop Wagner’s commitment to better living standards for the senior citi-zens of his hometown.

Recognized for his positive influence and the significant contributions to the communities he serviced, Bishop Wagner has enjoyed visits to The White House by personal invitations from Presidents Ron-ald Reagan, and William Jefferson Clin-ton.

Musically, as a gifted singer, song-writer, and arranger, Bishop Norman L. Wagner along with his choir, received Stel-lar Nominations for songs, “Best For Last,” and “Excellent.” Additionally, he played a very significant role in the launch of

Pastors from Coast to Coast

APOSTLE DAVID PITTMANTHE ROCK CHURCH INTERNATIOANLS HUMBLE, TEXAS

God’s divine plan for blessing in the ministry of sowing and reaping. His energetic preach-ing style and infusions of humor endear him to listeners in any setting. He is known through-out the United States as a man of faith and power.

PASTOR CARL A. McCLUNEY NEW HARVEST MINISTRES OF MAULDIN, SC

The New Harvest Min-istries has become a very dynamic ministry in the Up-state of South Carolina, a life-changing ministry with a restora-tion message. Pastor Carl has a mandate to house and equip a lov-

ing people that will chase after and live in a place called “Blessed”. Pastor Carl credits the success of this ministry to being humble be-fore God and keeping God First.

My prayer for all of you is to stay in peace, when faced with any situations of wrong-doing and just be still; watch God move on your behalf; but DON’T hinder your own future and blessings by retaliating. Your breakthrough may be right around the corner or through the next open door! He may be trying to give or bring into your life your next season of favor and/or deliverance! You’ll cut it off or delay it by getting in “attack” mode.

Breakthrough comes when we volun-tarily “STAND DOWN” from having our own way; meaning, we give precedence to Him having the choice to deal with things in His own timing and in His own way on your behalf. Why is this important? Because the Lord made us in His own image; He’s responsible for giving each of us a “will”, meaning we can pretty much do what we choose to do (with conse-quences of course), but we can. He honors us, when we turn over OUR WILLS to Him, even when we could do what we want to. God doesn’t forget what others do to us; often THEY DO, but when it comes to “pay back” time, then they can’t figure out why things aren’t going right in their lives, completely forgetting all about the havoc they caused in your life!

Now I know the next thing I’m about to say is going to really make some of you want to jump off the nearest cliff, but don’t get mad at me….it’s the Word of God speaking! As if turning over our will of wanting to “get back” at those that have wronged us wasn’t enough, the Lord then instructs us to do what?.... “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” Matthew 5:44, and if that isn’t enough, He tells us in Romans 12:20 to: “Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.” That’s when you REALLY know you’re growing children! My God, it’s not enough we have to WAIT on Him to facili-tate the appropriate punishment but we have to treat them right, pray for them and do right by them anyway? LOL…that’s the Word Zion, that’s the Word!

Listen, I know it’s tight God’s people, but…it’s RIGHT! I’ve personally had to experience this, many times but what I

I don’t want to offend him, but it is awkward for me.Sincerly,Huggy Bear Dear Huggy Bear,If you are comfortable in your manhood and you know the Lords unconditional love then do not be uncomfortable hugging him.... do the man hug ...shake hands, lean in, move out! inspiration & encouragement

We often call our-selves waiting on a break-through from God, but what are YOU doing to encourage one to come? Many of us want the Lord to come through for us in some area of our lives, be it finances, our marriages, jobs/employment situa-tions, etc. Do we really want a “breakthrough” or do we want God to just

do everything for us without us having any real responsibility in any of it? We do have a part to play Zion.

I think breakthrough is one of God’s areas of specialty, because there is always a lesson to be learned from it. He loves to send a clear message to the Believer that He “has our backs” in any given situation we may find ourselves in. For many of us, especially as Christians, an area we all could use some HELP in is the area of forgiveness and wanting revenge for wrongdoing. I can think of at least 6 or 7 personal experiences of my own, where the Lord clearly told me to “get out of the way” and let Him handle things the way He saw fit. It’s amazing how we can know the Word, read it, study it and then when we’re faced with a life situation, we immediately want to react by injecting our own policies of how we want to handle it! God declares in Romans 12:19, “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” In this scripture, God literally is letting us know that He takes FULL owner-ship of vengeance; in fact, NONE OF US has a right to “get back” at anyone for any wrong doings. Oh wow…I know I got the Saints going now…I mean, ALL OF US are guilty of at least wanting to throw the book at SOMEBODY who has done us wrong…right? The last thing we want to hear when someone has wronged us is “Honey, just let the Lord deal with them; He’ll do it in His own time…”

But know this and I speak from experi-ence: The Lord has a Heavenly system of repaying people for wrongfully attacking you like I’ve never witnessed! He can do things you would NEVER have the power, authority, right or ability to do, without get-ting in trouble for it, because He knows them inside and out…He made them. He knows how to deal with them in the most just way!

Be Encouraged: Breakthrough Is Within Reach!

Our society is not used to being alone. Many of us seem to be addicted to the constant use of cell phones, tele-vision, tweets, twitter, texts, and every imagin-able form of electronic communication to the exclusion of and pos-sible detriment of our

personal relationships. The approaching season of Lent gives us a unique oppor-tunity to engage in some quiet time with God and to take stock of what God has and is doing in our lives. It further gives us an opportunity to deepen our com-mitment to becoming more devoted fol-lowers of Christ.

Many Baptist churches do not for-mally observe the season of Lent. Conse-quently, I believe we miss an important opportunity to meditate on and prepare ourselves to thoughtfully and solemnly celebrate Christ’s death on Good Friday and his rising from the dead on Easter (Resurrection Day). The purpose of Lent is to encourage God’s people through fasting and/or thoughtful reflection, to humble ourselves before Him and draw closer to Him.

This year the Lenten season begins on February 17, ending on Easter Sun-day, April 4. Easter, along with Christ-mas, celebrates the two most important

events in Christianity - the birth and death of our Lord. Traditionally, those who celebrate Lent decide to “give up” or make a sacrifice of some cherished habit, food or possession. Instead of “giving up” something, why not instead consider “taking on” something, prefer-ably a trait or habit that draws us more closely to Christ. The road through Lent is a personal one. So if we are not in the habit of spending ample “alone time” with God why not make Lent a time of looking inward, taking stock of and let-ting go of those things that possess us. Why not instead reflect on the wonder of being owned by God.

Lent observes the 40-day period of partial fasting prior to Easter. The obser-vation of Lent goes back at least to the time of Irenaeus and over time evolved into a 40-day partial fast, often with strict fasting during Holy Week. Why forty days? Possibly because the number forty is significant in numerous bible references: the forty days Moses spent on Mount Sinai with God (Exodus 24:18); the forty days and nights Elijah spent walking to Mount Horeb (1 Kings 19:8); God made it rain for forty days and forty nights in the days of Noah (Genesis 7:4); the Hebrew people wandered forty years traveling to the Promised Land (Num-bers 14:33); Jonah in his prophecy of judgment gave the city of Nineveh forty days in which to repent (Jonah 3:4).

Fasting was an important part of Jesus’ teaching and in his own life. Jesus withdrew into the wilderness from the crowds that always followed him, where he fasted for forty days, and was tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1-2, Mark 1:12-13, Luke 4:1-2). He further told his disciples that they should fast. Since, presumably, the Apostles fasted as they mourned the death of Jesus; Chris-tians have traditionally fasted during the annual remembrance of his burial and resurrection.

The traditional belief is that Jesus spent forty hours in the tomb. The bibli-cal reference to ‘three days in the tomb’ is understood to have been from Fri-day afternoon to early Sunday morn-ing. Matthew 12:40 states, “For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” The glorious culmination of God’s plan for our salvation reached its culmination when God raised his son from the dead on that Sunday morning.

The Lenten journey is about taking part in Jesus’ final journey, about dying to self, and becoming transformed to a new life. Our Lord himself said, “Who-ever wishes to be my follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day, and follow in my steps.” (Luke 9:23). Comments may be sent to [email protected].

Breakthrough from page 3learned was how to be humbled by the obedience of going through it. I never said it felt good or I did it without reserva-tion, or because I necessarily wanted to….I said I did it out of obedience. Father God knows how hard it is in our flesh to let some things go, but He demands that we do in order to get to our next dimension.

The next time you’re faced with a decision in your life to take someone out by your own hand or to abide by God’s desire for us to turn them and the situa-tion over to Him…think about this: is the person or the situation REALLY important enough to risk you moving into your next dimension? There is too much work to be done in the Kingdom to give someone else that kind of power over you….don’t release your future, your blessings, and your vision into the hands of someone else that doesn’t’ deserve it. The only thing we’re REQUIRED to do is to love them

and release them into the Hands of the Lord to deal with them on His terms and according to His time table.

Now, about that breakthrough…I want to encourage you to take whatever next steps are necessary for you to move into your next dimension in God, so do the following and WATCH God move in your life: • Praise God every chance you get! (i.e.,

at home, in your car, witnessing to oth-ers, etc.)

• Help meet the need of someone else; becoming a GIVER is so important…and MEAN IT!

• Keep a grateful heart toward the Lord and toward others who love you! Let them know you appreciate them being in your life.

• Stay obedient to God’s Word and His direction for your life. READ THE WORD so you’ll know what to do.

• Pray for your enemies and those that curse you, try to hinder you, ignore you, etc. Your future, your times ARE NOT in their hands, it’s in God’s hands! (Psalm 31:15)

• STAND DOWN and allow the Lord to handle wrong-doings in His way and in His timing

• Do YOUR part and watch the Lord MOVE on your behalf…for He loves AND honors obedience, graciousness and PRAISE!

It was a good plan, graduate from Booker T. Washing-ton high school and go right to college at Morehouse. More-house was the logi-cal choice to prepare the son of a preacher and the grandson of a preacher. Dr. King moved on with his degree in sociology

to study religion at Crozer, a highly respected seminary. Coming from the segregated South he now studied and worked with various races and peo-

ple. His people skills were continually honed. It was then to Boston University where he met the perfect woman to love and serve as a Pastor’s wife, Coretta. Dr. King graduated, married and was ready to begin his life work, ministry. It was a very good plan but Dr. King took counsel with God.King did indeed hear the call of the Lord but he discovered that his parish was larger than he expected, his mis-sion far beyond that of a local church or Association. His role in history was far beyond anything he had ever imag-ined. Dr. King met the destiny God has planned all along. He went step by step following the lead of the one true God.We plan and we should. We prepare

ourselves for the future we imagine but when we listen for God’s voice we soon find ourselves discovering what He has planned. Yes, we may have many ideas and hopes for our lives but it is the Lord who will guide us to where we should be in life when we take council with Him.Prayer: Dear Father we lay our plans, our future before you and we seek your wisdom. Guide and direct us in the path you have designed for us.And we will follow. Amen

African Union Baptist Church – a forerunner for African American churches in Cincinnati, Ohio

Over the course of time, thousands of churches, representing various faiths have existed throughout the

Ohio community. Establishing programs, providing religious services and connect-ing with the community have been the focus of many. While St. Mary’s is the oldest church established in the Cincin-nati, Ohio area, The African Union Baptist Church, now known as the Union Baptist Church, was the first African-American church in this city.

On July 21, 1831, fourteen African-American members of the Enon Baptist Church in Cincinnati form their own congregation. This congregation, origi-nally known as the African Union Baptist Church, was the second oldest African-American congregation in the city. During this time, discrimination and segregation was running rapid and the organization of this congregation was formed to address the spiritual needs of African Americans. While African Americans were permitted to worship at Enon Baptist Church they were forced to sit in the back. Desir-ing to worship freely, without restriction, the African American congregation was formed.

Beginning their transitional journey, members of The African Union Baptist Church initially met in a member’s home.

In 1835, the congregation completed con-struction of a formal church building on

Western Row, near Second Street. The fol-lowing year, David Leroy Nickens, who was probably the first African American to be ordained as a minister in Ohio, became the church’s pastor.

Referred to as devoted abolitionist, members of The African Union Baptist Church were major components in the freedom fight. Actively assisting runaway slaves along the Underground Railroad, this church and its members hosted numer-ous abolitionist speakers. Among the more prominent abolitionists to visit the First African Baptist Church were Henry Ward Beecher, Frederick Douglass, and William Lloyd Garrison.

Over the course of time, the congrega-tion and membership of The African Union Baptist Church continued to increase. The expansion of the congregation caused the members seek larger accommodations so that all who desired to worship could do so. In 1864, the African Union Baptist Church purchased the former Enon Baptist Church building. From 1876 to 1879, George Wash-ington Williams, the first African American elected to the Ohio legislature, served as the church’s pastor. In 1895, the church, now known as the Union Baptist Church, completed construction of a new church building at the southwest corner of Rich-mond Street and Mound Street.

In 1960, Cincinnati officials imple-mented Queensgate II, an attempt to revitalize the Queensgate neighborhood in downtown Cincinnati. The Union Bap-tist Church was located in the Queens-gate neighborhood. The city informed the congregation that the church was to be demolished and offered the church build-ings in other Cincinnati neighborhoods. The Union Baptist Church chose to remain in Cincinnati’s downtown area and began construction of a new church building, which was completed in 1971.

The Union Baptist Church continues to serve the downtown Cincinnati area today. Besides meeting the religious needs of the community, the church currently operates a fourteen-story apartment building, known as Page Tower, for low-income residents. In 1990, the Union Baptist Church had nearly one thousand members.

African Union Baptist Church illus-trates the prejudice that existed in Ohio during the years before the American Civil War. Ohio was a state that did not allow slavery. Nevertheless, that did not mean that whites were open to granting African Americans equal rights. Free blacks found that it was difficult to get fair treatment, and they often formed their own commu-nities and institutions away from whites.

Founded in 1842, Franklin Circle Chris-tian church has been meeting the needs of people for over 168 years. Currently

worshipping in an 1883 Victorian Gothic building, which has been well-maintained and consistently up-dated, this ministry has been empowering generation after genera-tion in the Cleveland area.

Dedicated to serving the needs of the urban community, Franklin Circle Christian Church sits in the heart of the urban com-munity. Through their desire to empower and serve, Franklin Circle Christian Church has developed many programs designed to address the needs of people. Such programs have included Chinese Sunday School, a preschool, senior citizen and low income meal programs, summer youth programs, El Barrio, and the Native American Center.

Over the years, this church has fostered

many relationships, being the parent church for five west side Disciple of Christ con-gregations. Each congregation established carries a piece of the vision imparted by the parent, to meet the need of the people and to carry out the mission. “Our Mission is to empower disciples to serve and glorify God. We care for the spiritual needs of a cultur-ally diverse community, encourage creativ-ity, and awaken people to the joys of life with Jesus Christ.”

Currently Franklin Circle Christian Church is under the leadership of Pastor Allen Harris. Referred to as a Redevel-opment Pastor, Allen Harris specializes in the historic, diverse, urban congregation. Under his leadership, he has helped the con-gregation keep a clear sense of its identity and renewed its mission to the community. In April of 2004 the Region of Ohio and

the congregation affirmed the work Allen and the congregation had done to revitalize the church and they called him to continue to be their Pastor.

While Pastor Harris is the current over-seer, he stands on the shoulders of strong forerunners. Early members of this congre-gation included many lake captains, their families and President James A. Garfield who served as its pastor in 1857. Members Jessie Brown Pounds wrote hymns and Wil-liam Albert Hughes was founder and direc-tor of the Cleveland Messiah Chorus.

Franklin Circle Christian Church is standing as a national historic landmark and is located at 1688 Fulton Road, Cleve-land, Ohio 44113. For additional informa-tion individuals may contact 216-781-8232 or visit their website at http://franklincir-clechurch.org

Franklin Circle Christian Church serving the needs of people, year after year after year

Established in 1824, Second Baptist Church is the oldest Black Baptist church in Columbus, Ohio. Standing

on a strong spiritual foundation, this min-istry is the mother church for ten Baptist churches in the area. These include Rus-sell Street Baptist, Hildreth Baptist, Memo-rial Tenth Avenue Baptist, Shiloh Baptist, Union Grove Baptist, Bethany Baptist, Oakley, Good Shepherd, Pilgrim, Union, Beulah and Greater Love. However, three of these churches no longer exist under the name initially established.

As a ministry that has travailed over the course of time, Second Baptist has seen many barrier broken. In 1847, as the United States suffered under the burning issue of slavery, Second Baptist’s Pastor, James P. Poindexter, became an articu-late and enthusiastic voice against slav-ery within our community. Through his actions, the way was paved for the pres-ent day voice that still exists through Sec-ond Baptist Church. As they have picked up the mantle, this assembly continues to meet the needs of the church congregation and community, spreading the gospel and serving the Columbus area.

The journey for this ministry (later known as First Baptist Church) began in 1824 with seven members, three of whom were of African-American descent. Ten year years later a request went forth

by 16 African-American members to set aside a colored mission church. While the response was not immediate, two years later it was granted and honored by Rev. Ezekiel Fields, who was called to be the first pastor. First Baptist formally recog-nized the colored Baptist church as Second Baptist Church.

In 1844, Second Baptist obtained another milestone as the State of Ohio granted them a charter, allowing them to break ground for a new brick building located at 105-115 East Gay Street. While the church was progressing, members were still faced with dealing with the social issues that plagued the community. In 1844, a friendly split of the church by intense abolitionist, who formed the Anti-Slavery Baptist Church occurred. These members were more militant and active in the Underground Railroad.

During the 50’s Second Baptist went through transition, becoming incorporated by an Act of the General Assembly and the acquiring of a new Pastor, Reverend James Preston Poindexter. During this time the anti-slavery Baptist Church was also invited to reunite with Second Baptist. The two congregations merged.

Over the next 15 years, the church continued to be active in the civil rights movement, advocating for equal rights in the educational system. Both Reverend

James Poindex-ter and Reverend Washington Glad-don of the First Congregational Church entered into a desecration law suit against Columbus Pub-lic Schools. As a result of their con-cern for the edu-cational system, Reverend Poindexter was elected to the school board.

As the 90’s approached, Second Bap-tist continued to make strides, breaking ground for their new location and welcom-ing Reverend Charles Frank Jenkins, the man who would lead the congregation for 35 years of ministry. Picking up the mantle of leadership would be Reverend Harold Pinkston, who would later leave to form Good Shepherd Baptist Church. Reverend Leon L. Troy, Sr. would be the next Pastor to take the mantle and lead the flock for 20 years, during such time the ministry would grow from 250 to 1200 people.

Under Reverend Troy’s leadership new ministries were implemented such as the Deaconess Board, Operation: Potato, Oper-ation: Shoe Leather, Summer Camp, and Student Ministry (college students). A new

parking lot was built, new vans purchased, and the Sanctuary was air-conditioned. In addition the Second Baptist Church Hous-ing Association, Inc. was authorized by the church membership, the SBC Housing Association dedicated the senior housing building as Chandler Arms and Reverend Troy and the SBC congregation dedicated the new church annex which contained administrative offices, elevator, women’s lounge and car ramp.

As Reverend Troy transitioned into retirement Reverend David S. Carter took the mantle. Upon his transition the current Pastor Reverend Howard T. Washington would be installed.

Today, Second Baptist continues to be dedicated to the commission set before them so many years ago. Still persevering, still making a difference, still standing.

A Historical Perspective

praisereporter.com |February 20108

At my church, 2010 is the year of the Mega -Huge & Large! I was so excited, however I needed some tools to help me capture and write down every word, task and idea that God dropped in my path-way. Why writing down what you hear is so important? Modern psy-chological research says “that writing anything

down makes us remember it better. On the other hand, not writing things down is just asking to forget.” What was even more interesting was that “when we write something down, research sug-gests that as far as our brain is concerned, it’s as if we were doing that thing. I don’t know about you, but I want to do whatever God brings my way. The Bible says write the vision and make it plain they they may run that read it. If you don’t write it, no one can read it and run with it. Here are the tools I am using to

Preacher Creates “Too Much Drama”Widely recognized as one of the nation’s best preachers, Dr. C. Dexter Wise

III has expanded his reach with the publication of his latest book, “Too Much Drama: What To Do When Your Life Is Going Over The Top”. In this latest work, the founding pastor of Faith Ministries Church located in Columbus, Ohio, analyzes the signs, side-effects, sources, and solutions to the problem of Too Much Drama.

“The last thing you need is for somebody to tell you that you have too much drama. You already know that. What you need is help on how to reduce it, resolve it, and remove it. That’s what I provide in my new book”, says Wise. Dr. Wise talks about the drama magnets who draw it, the drama mediums who spread it, the drama emitters who radiate it, the drama addicts who chase it, the drama makers who pro-duce it and the drama managers who control it.

Too Much Drama is not just a book. It is a complete curriculum created by Dr. Wise which, in addition to the book includes: a Bible Study Book, a Video Bible Study Teaching Series and a Sermon Series all on “Too Much Drama”! These are great for individuals, small groups, book clubs, church wide studies and more.

To order online go to www.toomuchdrama.net or by phone (614) 898-1997.

In the Summer of 2009, Susie Head began working at Eastland mall in a small kiosk selling inspirational T-shirts and hats.

In the fall of that same year, God began opening doors and moved several people into her life that became instrumental in helping her establish Unique Christian Book Store.

Her openess and love for God and

desire to be an inspiration to others was the engine that drove her to provide peo-ple of faith with token reminders that Jesus Christ is relevant in every aspect of their lives.

She believes that Jesus is not a ideal that you ascribe to, or an idol that you look up to, but a real Spiritual and Divine pres-ence that expresses Himself in the lives of those that love Him.

As the scriptures plainly state:“Grace be with all them that love our

Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen “ Eph 6:24 (KJV)

Winter weather poses unique chal-lenges for drivers. Before heading out onto snowy or icy streets, take a few minutes to refresh your memory on how to drive safely in wintery conditions.

Before LeavingMake sure the gas tank is at least half

full and the windshield washer fluid res-ervoir is full.

Clear as much snow off of the car as you can, including the roof, headlamps and taillights. Scrape ice off of windows and side mirrors for maximum visibility.

Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.

If you are going to drive a long dis-tance, find out what kind of weather to expect. Visit the National Weather Service website at weather.gov to check the fore-cast.On the Road

Slow down. Tires lose their grip in slippery conditions, so accelerating, stop-ping and turning all take longer on snow-covered roads. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly.

AAA recommends that the normal fol-lowing distance of three to four seconds be

increased to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop.

Accelerating slowly reduces wheel spin. If you’re starting from a standstill on ice or slick snow, start in second gear if you have a manual transmission. Some automatic transmissions have a winter mode that auto-matically starts in a higher gear.

Don’t lock the wheels when braking. This can make the vehi-cle slide or skid. If your vehicle has an antilock braking system (ABS), depress the brake pedal firmly and hold it down. Do not pump the brakes. ABS usually send a vibration through the brake pedal – if you feel this, don’t let up, it’s normal.

Do one thing at a time. Consumer Reports says that asking a vehicle to do two things at once – such as braking and turning, or accelerating and turning – can reduce your control. When taking a turn, slowly apply brakes while the vehicle is going straight. When it’s at the right speed to take the turn, let up on the brakes and smoothly turn the steering wheel. After

you’re through the turn, slowly depress the accelerator to regain speed.

Correct for a slide. If the rear of the vehicle begins to slide during a turn, gen-tly let up on the accelerator and turn the steering wheel in the direction of the slide to straighten out. If the front end begins to slide, let up on the accelerator and turn the steering wheel in the direction you want to go.

Pay extra attention to other drivers - they may not be driving as cautiously as you.For more safe winter driving tips, visit consumerreports.org, aaa.exchange.com or the Federal Citizen Information Center at pueblo.gsa.gov.. Courtesy of Family Features

Getting a Mortgage in 2010 Beginning this month, there are lots of new changes in the mort-

gage loan process and it’s much harder to obtain a mortgage loan now than in months or years past. If you are thinking this is your year to purchase a home, make sure that your finances are in order and that you have a clear picture in your mind of what you need first versus what you want.

You now need to contact a lender of your choice to go over your credit report. If this is the lender that you want to obtain your

mortgage loan from, then the lender should provide you with a list of items needed for the loan process. Once you have established the kind

of loan and the terms of the loan, you can contact a realtor of your choice to find your home. According to Mandy Harless of ReMax impact, the inventory of avail-able homes for sale continues to be plentiful. For buyers wishing to take advantage of the federal tax credit, the market offers many options including: traditional home sales, bank-owned properties, pre-foreclosure and foreclosed properties. The market continues to be a buyers market and a educated and prepared buyer can secure a great deal.

Wedding planning can turn any sweet-natured woman into a blubbering mess or the dreaded bridezilla. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way. • Expect stress. This is a stressful time. Talk with your fiancé and a close friend about helping you chill out when things get too tense.• Be realistic. A lot of brides set their expectations so high that they drive them-selves crazy. There are a lot of resources (Web sites, books, magazines, friends) that can help you have a lovely wedding on any budget. • Don’t try to please everyone. The wed-ding is about the bride and groom. You two need to decide what is meaningful to you and what will express who you are. • Delegate. You can’t do everything by yourself. It’s ok to ask friends, family and

the groom for help. Some churches or reception halls have wedding coordinators available – let them help.• Take care of yourself. It’s important to eat right, get enough sleep and exercise. You’ll feel more energized, you’ll be able to think more clearly and make better deci-sions. Courtesy of Family Features

Say ‘I Don’t’ To Wedding Stress

Catering Questions & Answers

WEDDING TIPS 101

Don’t let wedding stress ruin the fun.

wedding planning

How do you make sure your caterer is a good one? By asking the right questions.

May I have references?Ask for at least 10 former clients and

call as many as you can. May I see your business license?

Caterers should be licensed by the state. Make sure you see proof of liability insurance, too.

Can we sample from your wedding menu?

Take your spouse-to-be and a friend with you so that you can get varied opin-ions. Some caterers charge a tasting fee, but it’s worth it.

What does the price per person include? Is the cost strictly for food, or does

it cover tables, chairs, linens, tableware, punch service, table displays, etc.?What other fees do you charge?

Are tips and taxes included in the price? Some caterers will charge a cake-cutting fee or corking fee for wines. Make sure you get all fees in writing. What are the payment arrangements?

You need to find out how much of a deposit is required, and if it’s refundable or not. Ask when the final payment is due and what the caterer’s preferred form of payment is.

Make sure you have a written con-tract to sign. This guarantees that they will provide the food, timelines and details dis-cussed.

food&diningKey Ingredients For A Healthier Heart

(NAPSI)-Here’s heartening news: Although cardiovascular dis-eases remain the nation’s No. 1 killer, according to the American Heart Association, you can help reduce your risk.

“People tend to focus on what they should cut out of their diets; but it’s also what you add in that can make a difference,” said registered dietitian Tammi Hancock. Here are key heart-healthy nutrients to look for:

Omega-3 fatty acids can decrease the plaque on artery walls while rais-ing healthy HDL cholesterol levels.

Phytosterols, plant sterols, can lower total cholesterol and LDL cho-lesterol while raising HDL.

Vitamin D: Not only does vita-min D help keep bones strong, but it also plays a role in heart health.

Balanced fats: All fats are not cre-ated equal. For example, Smart Bal-ance spread has been shown to bal-

ance cholesterol ratios. The patented blend of all-natural vegetable oils contains no hydrogenated or inter-esterified fats or palm kernel oil.

Here’s a great way to use it to start the day:

Oatmeal with Spiced ApplesServes 43¼ cups water¼ teaspoon salt1¾ cups quick-cooking oats¼ cup Smart Balance HeartRight But-tery Spread, softened3 tablespoons dark brown sugar or honey1 teaspoon ground cinnamon¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg1 teaspoon vanilla extract¼ teaspoon salt2 cups (¼-inch-thick) sliced Granny Smith apple, peeled if desired

Bring cups water and salt to a full boil in a large saucepan over

high heat. Stir in oats. Reduce heat to medium and cook, uncovered, 6 minutes or until thickened, stirring occasionally. While oatmeal cooks, combine all the spread ingredients in a small bowl and stir until well blended. Heat a medium nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add ¼ cup of the spice spread; refrigerate remaining spread for later use. When bubbly, add the apple slices and cook 3 minutes or until tender, stir-ring gently. Remove from heat and let stand 1 minute to absorb flavors. Divide oatmeal equally among four bowls. Spoon equal amounts of the apple mixture over each serving.
