At the January 27th, 2008 meeting of the Dupage Woodworkers, Ms. Carole Floate gave an informative and interest-ing demon-stration of marbling. Al-

though this process can be ap-plied to many different media Carole carefully and concisely explained how to apply the randomly patterned paints to wood. Altogether enjoyable, I think we all came away with in-teresting ideas about how to embellish our projects using this technique. An enthusiastic thank you to Carole for follow-ing up with her email contain-ing marbling directions and a resource list.

At the February 27th meet-ing of the Dupage Woodwork-ers, Josh Guge, a founder of the Institute of Wildlife Art, will be demonstrating

basic airbrush operation for woodworkers/carvers. Josh, a talented carver and airbrush artist, along with his father Bob Guge operate a studio in Gilberts, IL offering classes in carv-

ing and airbrushing to students from kids to seniors. Josh and Bob have won many Best of Show and World Championship awards for their wildlife carv-ings. You can visit the institute online at www. gugeinsti-tute.com. We’ve asked Josh to put together a carving/airbrushing weekend course for the DPWW sometime following his demonstration. We’ll have a subject list (fish/bird, etc.) avail-able at the February meeting and the most votes win. We hope to have 6 or 8 or even more participants join what I’m sure will be an enjoyable and instructional weekend – and to beat all, we’ll all go home with a finished carving.

After the tour of Opti-Sand Inc., several members traveled to Midwest Saw in West Chicago to pick up sharpened blades or to drop off blades to be sharp-ened. Rick Ogren did his magic and got a commit-ment from them to grant a 20% discount for DuPage Woodworkers Club members. One member had 2 10 inch 80 tooth blades sharpened at $17 each. The discount netted out at $13.60 each. Their shop is about equidistant between County

Farm Rd. and Route 59 just south of North Ave. Take North Ave.to Prince Crossing Rd, turn south one block to Meadowview Crossing , the right on Meadowview Crossing to the small in-dustrial park and park in the rear. The door is marked “Will Call”.

The following is from a re-cent article written about our newest acquisition. Old furniture or decorative pieces you love, whether family heirlooms or flea mar-ket finds, may have seen bet-ter days. Furniture Restora-tion: Step-by-Step Tips and

Techniques for Professional Results, by Ina Brosseau Marx and Allen Marx, encourages you to refurbish them instead of retiring them to the basement. Anyone who has a second-hand treasure in need of structural repair - fur-niture, picture frames, and other decorative objects - can gain the knowledge and confi-dence to restore it themselves with the help of the Marxes.

The Marxes have worked as professional restorers and teach and write about their field. Their goal in this book is to pass on what they have learned about how to fix warped ve-neers, chips and dents.

This well-illustrated book offers guidance on many aspects of restoration, from building a tool kit to replacing original gold leaf - or knowing when to call in a professional. They share what they call their guiding principle: simply, "whatever two hands have put to-gether, your two hands can try to fix".

So, what are the top tips for care of furni-

ture to help avoid the need for restoration? Simple things can

prevent damage before it occurs, for example: (a) Pick up a chair by holding it under the seat; lift it, don't drag it by the top of the back or an arm. Similarly, don't try to move a table by tugging it along by the top; lift it. (b) Be careful when vacuuming not to bang into furniture feet and bases. (c) Dusting is the least damaging way to clean and prolong the life of objects that have intact surfaces. Use a slightly damp chamois cloth or a very full, soft-haired brush. Avoid dusting sprays. Their ingredients are harmful to wood because they contain sili-cones that get deeply into the pores of the wood. (d) To remove dirt and grime on brown wood surfaces (not painted, gilded or Asian lacquer) dampen a soap-filled steel-wool pad and rub it with slight pressure along the grain. Then wipe with a dry cloth or towel for a smoother, cleaner surface."

Many thanks to Jerry Johnson who recom-mended that this book be purchased for Our Library.

As I wrote last month, we have purchased some DVDs for the Library, but I'm having a little problem making sure that they will run on anyone's computer or DVD player so they won't be available for another month.

Again, a reminder that books, etc, may be checked out from the library for a month, but after that time, there is a $1 charge for each month that the book is overdue. Dic Drees

The website committee is still very active in working to clean up prior years website expense and redesigning the website.

Several members have brought items to sell or give away at general meetings. The topic was dis-cussed and it was decided to formally approve the practice and make members aware that the proce-dure is available to all members.

The audit committee composed of Pat Cahill, Joe Knupp, and Tom Milleman, reported that the 2007 books had been audited and they “…accurately reflect the financial status of the organiza-tion for the period …” The board thanked the com-mittee members for their efforts.

The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Jerry John-son

Some projects are just not appro-priate to bring to the From Our Workshop segment at Club Meetings. Some folks bring photos of these projects which is great. However, an 8X10 photo is difficult to see from the audience.

You can bring your digital photos on a CD or flash drive a few minutes early and I can quickly put them in a computer slide show for you. Or you can email the photos to me and I’ll set it up ahead of time. Call me with questions at 630-369-3387 Bruce Kinney

The minutes and treasurer’s report for January were ap-proved as submitted.

The following is data on 2007 results and the budget adopted for 2008 adopted by the board.

*Based on 112 members

It was noted that the 2007 budget had been set with a $1200 loss but final results still showed a profit. The 2008 budget loss projection is similar except that there are some one time charges mainly associated with the website included. Tim will present the budget at the Febru-ary general meeting.

Bill Hochmuth is making good progress in lining up pro-grams for the year – only four slots remain to be filled and he has more excellent ideas than that. It promises to be an exciting year for the club programs.

Rick Ogren announced that the February shop tour will be hosted by Bruce Kinney. He has a number of possibilities for fu-ture tours and visits.

We received two thank you notes from the church

George Rodgers led a dis-cussion that resulted in a deci-sion to not participate in the Christmas Crossroads show this year. There haven’t been enough sales to justify the effort and ex-pense. He will investigate alter-
