Key Kiwanis Convention dates 2007

Auction Gala Upfront and Center As the Kiwanis club enters into the New Year with a new goal to fundraise over $50,000 dollars this year for local needs, the focus is now turned on the process and procedures to acquire the fund and met our local goals. The funding gala on Saturday April 28th at the Everett Events center requires the full resources of our membership. Two major tasking elements are in-cluded in the build up to the gala. First, is the pro-curement and acquisition of silent auction and live auction material and items. Leading this drive is Dennis Dinkla our chief auctioneer and quality control manager. Members need to coordinate sponsorship items with the auction planning team in order for the planning logistics to appear to be coordinated. Potential spon-sors need to be afforded and dignified and professional approach for their partnership. They desire to have their name; logo and product are presented in a manner that befits their sponsorship. Secondly, to achieve our fundraising goal members are asked to recruit attendees in the form of table sponsorship or through individual ticket sales. Our goal is to have 200 guests grace us with their presence and pocketbooks at this gala. Leading this drive is Barry McGee in coordination with the Kiwanis board. To be effective in our endeavors requires that we coordinate and communicate our efforts through the development of a comprehen-sive mailing inventory, sponsorship inventory, and auction item inventory. Detail will be forthcoming at our weekly membership meetings and all of you are strongly encouraged to maintain contact and be “in the loop”.

We all always see/hear things through different personal systems. One of the richest benefits of living/working together as we do in the Kiwanis Organization is the sharing of perceptions. Feeling free to interact on this level, to me, is one of the impor-tant tools that lead a group to better understanding of the com-munity in which we live and are endeavoring to enrich the quality of life. I guess what I am trying to say to all involved is "thank you for sharing yourselves with me and ultimately with the children that need us". regards - Wally Walsh

KIWANIS AIDES LOCAL FOOD BANK

Profits from the Snohomish Kiwanis Club’s recent Santa photo projects allowed the organization to contribute $1000 to the Snohomish Food Bank. The monies are earmarked to purchase supplies for infant care and support. The project included photo sessions at the downtown gazebo, Top Foods and the Snohomish Chalet. The club would like to thank the many citizens who purchased photos as well as the Chamber of Commerce, Kim Walker and the staff and management of Top Foods and Donna and Wally Walsh of the Snohomish Chalet for providing their support and/or facilities. Also, our sincere appreciation to photographers Brian Thompson and Sean Collins as well as “printers” Jim Rahm and John Bruce of the Tillicum Kiwanis.

Kiwanis Korn Bread 3 packages Jiffy corn bread 2 and 1/2 cups milk 1/2 cup veg. oil 1 can creamed corn 1 can diced green Chile's (quarter sized can) 1 can jalapenos (quarter sized can) Mix together. Bake in a greased cake pan at 350 for 1 and 1/2 hours. Convection oven is 1 hour at 325.

The official membership numbers for the 2005-06 Kiwanis year are in, and they are impressive. As of September 30, 2006, the total membership for Kiwanis International is 260,701 members in 8,241 clubs. This represents an increase of 11,413 members and 124 clubs over the baseline numbers established the previous year, and is the first measurable progress toward our goal of 1 million mem-bers. "This is truly an exciting time to be a Kiwanis member and leader," reports Kiwanis International CEO/Executive Director Rob Parker. In 2005, Kiwanis established the goal to be 1 million members strong by its 100th anniversary in 2015. The organization is concentrating efforts on the development and implementation of specific strategic initiatives to achieve overall growth in Kiwanis.

District 22 Zone Conference will be held at the Cascade Culi-nary Arts School in Ab-botsford, BC The date is Saturday March 17 from 8:30AM to 4:00PM.

Registration for the 2007 Mid-Winter Conference and Board Meeting to be held in Richmond, British Colum-bia the weekend of March 2 – March 4, 2007.

We are asking that all of you call the Best Western Richmond Inn directly for your room reservations. The number is 1-604-273-7878 or 1-800-663-0299. We have negotiated a Kiwanis rate of $98.00 Cana-dian (plus tax) for both single and doubles. At the cur-rent rate of exchange, that is about $84.00 in U.S. dol-lars. You MUST make certain to identify yourself as a Kiwanian in order to receive this rate. In order to guar-antee a room, you will need to do this before Sunday, February 4th. After that date, the hotel does not guar-antee the availability of rooms or the Kiwanis rate. This is a busy hotel – very near the Vancouver Airport — so it does fill up quickly! Your registration payment needs to be back to us at the District Office by Thursday, February 22nd. Be-cause we must give the hotel our meal counts prior to the conference, we are not able to sell additional meal tickets at the door. You MUST pre-register.

What a year we’ve had in our parks! In 2006 volunteers worked close to 1,400 hours making our parks a better place to be for all of us. Here’s a wrap up of what was accomplished….

Special Events Included:

• April 8th – Snohomish Parks Foundation held their first fundraiser at Morgantown Park. People were invited to buy native spe-cies shrubs and trees and then plant them to enhance the park. Dunbar Doors donated all the native plants and McAuliffe’s Nursery donated $1,400 worth of large trees.

• April 12th – Emerson Elementary 5th grade classes spent Arbor Day planting native trees and shrubs at Morgantown Park.

• April 12th – Windermere Realty held their annual Service Day. Targeting the Ave A gazebo, Cady Park, and the riverfront trail as well as a few other spots around town.

• May – September The Adopt-a-Park Community Outreach table at the Farmers Market over the summer.

• July 8th – A group of volunteers turned out for a Summer Paint Party Event to paint the restrooms at Ferguson Park as well as the bollards around the edge of the park.

• July 15th – The mighty Snohomish Kiwanis club cleaned and painted the benches, tables, and fences at Averill Field.

• October 21st -- Thanks to Jess Champers, youth pastor of Snohomish Free Methodist Church who, through the City Serve program, coordinated 14 young adult volunteers.

• October 22nd – 18 adults & kids showed up to help with the Claytown Park Fall Clean-up. Girl Scout troop 995 under the direc-tion of scout leaders Shannon and Jo set a hard-to-beat example!

October 28th – the Blackman Lake Watershed Restoration event was a huge success. The Snohomish Park Foundation supplied conservation experience and coordination support so that 39 volunteers and 4 city parks department employees were able to plant over 2,000 trees, shrubs, and native bulbs in one day to help water quality in the lake. .

Please mark you calendars now for the Chamber of Commerce City-wide Spring Clean-up scheduled for March 31st….
