“Big” Georgesued for $50 million

(Houston)- Former boxingchampion GeorgeForeman along with aninternational law firm arebeing sued for $50 mil-lion. The plaintiffs arealleging they were hiredto launch a line of GeorgeForeman steaks, and thatForeman and the interna-

tional law firm have defrauded them.GreatMeals USA Inc., filed the law-

suit recently in Superior Court and theclaims include, fraud, breach of contractand interference with contract againstForeman. The other parties being suedalong with Foreman are Traurig LLP andJohn C. Kirkland who is a partner in thelaw firm.

GreatMeals USA Inc., is aWashington, D.C.-based company and isclaiming to have spent hundreds of thou-sands of dollars to reach a $37 millionlicensing deal with the Home ShoppingNetwork to only have Foreman refuse todo any promotions. The company says thiscaused the entire deal to collapse.Foreman also has filed a lawsuit of hisown recently. According to publishedreports, Foreman, who had a profit sharingdeal to act as spokesperson for a companybearing his name, contends the companyintroduced products under his name, whichhe did not approve. The company, GeorgeForeman Foods filed for bankruptcy inNovember 2003.

recently received an invitation fromthe Atlanta Tribune to attend aDiversity Roundtable which tookplace in Atlanta, Georgia on Jan. 25.

The event was being hosted by theAtlanta Tribune and the Atlanta Hawksand is an annual roundtable discussionheld before the Hawks vs. Clevelandgame and took place in the PhilipsArena, 1 Philips Drive. This year’s dis-cussion offered perspectives from topcorporate diversity leaders on what has -and hasn’t - worked in corporate diversi-ty. Panelists included: Frank McCloskey,vice president of diversity and corporaterelations for Georgia Power; ArthurTriche, vice president of the AtlantaHawks; Kevin Clayton, vice president ofdiversity for Russell Corporation; AlfredElder, diversity manager for City ofAtlanta; Valencia Adams, vice presidentand chief diversity officer for BellSouthCorporation; and Geri Thomas, seniorvice president of corporate diversity forBank of America.

I was honored to have been invited tothis event. I was not able to attend thisyear. However, I wondered seeminglyout loud to myself. Why don’t we havethese kinds of working relationships withour sports organizations here in Texas?

The last day to apply for a ballot bymail has already passed. Early voting for the March pri-mary starts on Tuesday, Feb. 21, and ends on March 3,2006. The Primary Election will be held on Tuesday,March 7, 2006.

Beware of misinformation and know your rights. Ifyou have had trouble with the law in the past, this doesnot prohibit you from voting. It’s a common misconcep-

tion that ex-felons can’t vote in the state of Texas. Mostex-felons don’t even know that they have a right to vote.“This needs to fixed and it begins with each and every oneof us,” says Aubrey R. Taylor, president and CEO ofHouston Highlight Publishing, the publisher of HoustonBusiness Connections.

If someone you know has a felony conviction, let himor her know this does not prohibit him or her from partic-ipating in the election process. Yes, it is true that Texanswith felony convictions once could not vote in the lonestar state. However, we can thank President George W.Bush for enacting legislation to eliminate the waitingperiod that use to exist. There use to be a permanent ban,

but in 1983 that ban was replaced with a five-year waitingperiod after felons finished their sentences. Thanks tothen-Gov. Bush, the waiting period was erased in 1997 inthe state of Texas.

Why do you think most felons don’t know this infor-mation? The state laws that ban or restrict the votingrights of felons keep an estimated 4.7 million citizens– 1 in 43 adults in the United States – from voting;more than half a million in Texas. If ex-offenders weregiven this information and began to exercise their rightto vote we don’t have to tell you what would happen inTexas. This could become one of the largest votingblocks in the state.

bus stop, where the operator who comes clos-est to the curb without actually touching itgets the highest rank.

“I learned everything about bus drivinghere in METRO,” said the 15-year veteranoperator. Asked about how he honed all hissafe driving skills, Kennedy humbly replied:“I have to give all the credit to our trainingdepartment.”

The CAE, located onHoward's Washington, D.C.campus, offers a range ofprograms to support highlytalented African-Americanaccounting graduates as theybegin their careers. Dr.Hubert D. Glover, CMA,CIA, CPA, chair of Howard'sSchool of BusinessAccounting Department, andFrank Ross, NABA foundingpresident and director of theCAE, were on hand toreceive a $20,000 checkfrom Johnetta BosemanHardy, NABA's deputy exec-utive director, and Darryl R.Matthews, Sr., executivedirector and COO of NABA.

“Accountants are inhigh demand, and it isimportant that programs likeours continue to flourish andoffer the best accountingeducation available to peopleof color,” Glover said.“NABA's contribution willgo towards our goal ofincreasing the actual numberof Howard students enteringinto the accounting profes-sion and enhancing theirfuture in the field.”

“Because the accountingindustry will continue to bescrutinized, NABA recog-nizes the need to increase thepool of qualified black CPAsto lead compliant finance

departments,” NABA’sMatthews said. “By support-ing programs such as theCAE, we are taking proac-tive measures to make surethat the accounting field willbe rich with diversity in thefuture.”

The CAE partnership isjust one of many initiativesNABA has embarked on tosupport the advancement ofpeople of color in accountingand finance. Last summer,NABA and its Division ofFirms (DOF) participated inthe CAE’s inaugural week-long Leadership SkillsDevelopment program,where several senior auditand tax leaders from Deloitteand the DOF led participantsthrough a series of coursesfocused on professionaldevelopment as well aspreparation for the CPAexam. NABA also joinedforces with Becker CPAReview and GleimAccounting Publications tooffer high-quality, career-boosting CPA exam reviewworkshops at its 34th AnnualNational Convention andDiversity Recruitment Expolast year in Detroit. (Houston)- Texas Southern University (TSU)president Priscilla Slade is under fire again. This timeallegations have the Texas Southern University boardof regents seeking answers. At the heart of the alle-gation is a claim that Slade used school money onher private residence according to pub-lished reports.

J. Paul Johnson, told Houston’s onlydaily, “We’re looking into some ques-tions that have been raised at the univer-sity.” Johnson is the regents’ chairman,and tried to schedule an emergency meet-ing recently but could not get a quorum.

“Let’s not rush to judgement onSlade,” says Aubrey R.Taylor, presidentand CEO of Houston HighlightPublishing, L.L.C., the publisher ofHouston Business Connections.” Hesays “sometimes we allow things to takeon a life of their own in the media...weshould allow the Texas Southern University Board ofRegents to do their job.”

Dr. Priscilla Dean Slade was named President ofTexas Southern University on October 27,1999. Afterjoining the TSU Family in 1991 as Chair of theAccounting Department, Dr. Slade was named Deanof the Jesse H. Jones School of Business in 1992,where she succeeded in building a legacy of pridebased on the Texas Southern University motto of“Excellence in Achievement.”

Dr. Slade has a head for business and a heart foreducation. Her forte is program development, whereshe exercises her creative talents, keen eye for busi-ness, and genuine desire to provide students with thebest education possible. Empowering young peopleto make wise and informed career decisions andmove further towards their futures is of utmost importanceto Dr. Slade.

Texas Southern University exhibits all of thecharacteristics of a well-run business due Dr. Slade’sprudent leadership in the areas of planning andadministration. She has established focused allianceswith the corporate sector to build a strong develop-ment infrastructure. Though her accomplishments as

President are many, some of the most significantinclude: increased student enrollment, reengineeringof campus maintenance and construction operations,and achieving certification of the financial aid deliv-ery system from U.S. Department of Education.

Dr. Slade holds a Bachelor of Science degree inBusiness Administration from Mississippi State

University, a Masters degree inProfessional Accounting from JacksonState University, and a Ph.D. inAccounting from the University ofTexas at Austin.

Dr. Slade’s achievements arefueled by her continual quest for excel-lence. She currently serves on the Boardof Directors of the Federal ReserveBank-Houston Branch; Greater HoustonPartnership; Houston 2012 Foundation;Houston Technology Center; INROADS/Houston, Inc.; Junior Achievement; TheHouston Forum; YMCA of the GreaterHouston Area; HISD HU-LINC

Governing Board; and The Telecom OpportunityInstitute. Additionally, she served on Governor RickPerry’s transition team, the Environmental AdvisoryCommittee, and Executive Women’s Partnership forthe Greater Houston Partnership. Her dedication toacademia includes publications in refereed journalsand proceedings. She has been instrumental inobtaining funding to increase student access to high-er education. The President has received variousprestigious awards, including The Gutenberg Award,Woman of the Year, Achiever’s Award, Soaring EagleAward, Wall of Fame Award, Spirit of FreedomAward, Women on the Move, Women of ExcellenceAward, IMPACT Award, and the Young Eagles Award.

Dr. Slade enjoys singing, playing bridge,backgammon, tennis, and working out. AFRICAN AMERICANLIVES works to restore its par-ticipants' lineages in reversechronological order. Startingwith the oral histories of the indi-viduals' families, and drawing onphotographs, film clips, musicand early personal records, Dr.Gates begins to trace their fami-ly trees back through the 20thcentury. Noted historians andexpert genealogists aroundAmerica help fill in missingbranches, in the process explain-ing how such major events asJim Crow segregation and thepost-World War I “GreatMigration” from the South to theNorth helped shape AfricanAmerican families.

“This is one of the mostexciting projects in which I havebeen involved,” said Dr. Gates.“AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVESis about African American history,of course, but on a deeply person-al level. Slavery deprived AfricanAmericans of their historical andfamilial memory, and this series isan attempt to restore that memoryon both sides of the Atlantic.”

Dr. Gates’ genealogicalresearch becomes increasinglydifficult as he proceeds backthrough the Reconstruction Era,Civil War, the Colonial and earlyslave trade periods in Americanhistory. When the genealogicalroad comes to an end, he turns tosome of the country’s leadingscientists involved in cutting-edge work using DNA samplesto trace ancestral roots back toAfrica. Finally, Dr. Gates joinsone series participant in the lastleg of the journey, across theAtlantic to the western coast ofAfrica. There, they visit an areawhere genetic, historical and

anthropological evidence sug-gests that the participant's ances-tors once lived.

In an era when ever-increas-ing numbers of Americans areinvestigating their genealogy,AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVESprovides a timely and powerfuldemonstration of how meaning-ful reclaiming one's past can beas well as an understanding likenever before of AfricanAmerican history.

It is the first television seriesto explore black roots in bothAmerica and Africa using notonly genealogy but also DNA,including fascinating stories ofancestors that were free duringthe time of slavery. And by spot-

BUSINESS CONNECTIONS REPORTS

FederalCommunicationsCommission (FCC)spokesperson JessicaFisher tells HoustonBusiness Connections, “no information in database or pending toindicate KCOH 1430 AM is being sold.”

The Interviews

On Thursday, January 19, in an interview withHouston Business Connections, Michael “Mike”Petrizzo told the publication a sale was pending andsimply awaiting FCC approval. The FCC was con-tacted to confirm the statement, and HoustonBusiness Connections was told by FCC spokesper-son Jessica Fisher, “no record of a pending sale wasavailable in FCC electronic files or database involv-ing the Houston based radio station.” What’s reallygoing on at KCOH Radio? For now what we doknow is that technically the station is not sold.

Why KCOH is not sold

The FCC is an independent United States gov-ernment agency, directly responsible to Congress.The FCC was established by the CommunicationsAct of 1934 and is charged with regulating interstateand international communications by radio, televi-sion, wire, satellite, and cable. The FCC’s jurisdic-tion covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia,and U.S. possessions. If KCOH were sold, thisorganization would have had to approve or disap-prove the sale. The FCC has provided HoustonBusiness Connections with the appropriate links tohelp keep track of and bring you the latest informa-tion on this matter. “It is still very possible the sale isin the process of being negotiated between the sta-tion and potential buyers,” says Aubrey R. Taylor,president and CEO of Houston Highlight Publishing,

L.L.C., the publisher of Houston BusinessConnections. “However, at this time we have tobelieve Petrizzo has no reason to be dishonest aboutthe sale of the station,” Taylor said.

On KCOH Being A BlackCompany

At this time, KCOH is not a Black-Owned radiostation. However, it could still be referred to as aBlack radio station referring to its target audience oflisteners and formatting. According to the March2005 (Ownership) report filed by Michael “Mike”Petrizzo (a White male) with the FCC, his percent-age of votes stood at 57.59 percent. His percentageof total assets (equity debt plus) also stood at 57.59percent. Travis Gardner (Black or African Americanmale) is listed as the secretary and has 22.20 percentof the votes and has 22.20 percent of the total assets(equity debt plus) according to the filing. MargaretteT. Robinson (Black or African American female) islisted as the treasurer. She has 20.21 percent of thevotes while also possessing 20.21 percent of the totalassets (equity debt plus) according to the report.

So, technically, Michael “Mike” Petrizzo is themajority owner of KCOH Radio and has the control-ling interest in the station. That makes the station a

White-owned radio station with a Black format anda Black target audience of listeners. Since Petrizzo isalso listed as the general manager, it should beassumed that he is in control of the day-to-day oper-ations at the station.

What constitutes a minority-owned business?

According to the Houston Minority BusinessCouncil’s criteria to get certified as a bonafideminority firm, 51 percent of the firm must be owned,managed, and controlled by an ethnic minority whois a United States citizen in order to protect againstfront operations. The United States Department ofHousing and Urban Development also has similarcriteria, and states, a “minority-business enterprise”is a business in which minority group membersown 51percent or more of the company; or, in thecase of a publicly-owned business, one in whichminority-group members own at least 51percent ofits voting stock and control management and dailybusiness operations.

KCOH does not meet the standards necessary tobe considered a Black-owned business. However,this does not negate the fact the station as a wholehas served the community well for so many years.

About KCOH Radio

KCOH Radio according to its website is the old-est Black radio station in Texas as well as the south-ern portion of the United States. The station wasestablished in 1953 and began broadcasting fromdowntown Houston in the M&M building. In 1963,a new studio was built at the corner of Wichita andAlmeda in Houston’s Third Ward that has been thehome of KCOH ever since. The station continues tobe a recognized forerunner in terms of being a Blackradio station. KCOH has been the first in the field toinclude talk show programming, gospel, and manyother types of shows with their urban listeners in mind.

Other Reports On This Matter

The African-American News & Issues, considered tobe Texas’ Widest Circulated and Read Newspaperwith a Black Perspective is where Houston BusinessConnections initially learned of the pending sale ofthe radio station. In a recent article published in theJanuary 25-31, 2006 issue, the publication is report-ing the sale price of KCOH 1430 AM as being $10million. The publication is furthermore listing thebuyer as Freedom Communications, Inc.

with average starting salaries fore-cast to rise 11.2 percent, tobetween $67,000 and $94,250annually. Entry-level internalauditors at small companies (up to$25 million in sales) will see aver-age starting salaries increase 9 per-cent, to $35,500 to $43,250 per year.

Public Accounting Outlook

Public accounting firms areraising salaries across the board asthey compete with companies inprivate industry for top accountingstaff. Average starting salaries forentry-level accounting profession-als at small firms are projected toclimb 6.5 percent, to between$35,500 and $42,500. Seniormanagers/directors at large firms($250 million+ in sales) can antic-ipate a 4.2 percent increase inaverage starting salaries, to$85,500 to $130,000 annually.Senior accountants at midsize firms($25 million to $250 million insales) will see base compensationrise to $50,000 to $70,000 — anincrease of 8.8 percent from 2005.

Other key findings reported inthe 2006 Salary Guide:

* Tax managers at midsizecompanies will see average start-ing salaries of $57,750 to $74,000— up 4.6 percent over 2005 levels.

* Bookkeepers can anticipatea 6.8 percent rise in base compen-sation in the year ahead.

* Entry-level accountants atmidsize companies will see start-ing salaries rise 4.1 percent, to$32,000 to $38,250 annually.

* Mutual fund accountantscan anticipate a 4.7 percent gain inbase compensation, to the range of$38,000 to $51,250 annually.

*Accounts receivable/accountspayable managers at small compa-nies will see starting salaries climb5.2 percent, to the range of$33,750 to $41,500.

Nationally, demand foraccounting and finance profes-sionals is expected to be particu-larly strong in the manufacturing,real estate and construction indus-tries. (All salaries listed arenational averages. However, hir-ing activity and compensationvary significantly by geographicmarket.
