P R E F A C E .

In presenting this new Catalogue to the trade, it

gives me pleasure to call their attention to the many

new Leeks which I have added to my well known line

of Pad Locks, which, for beauty of finish, strength and

security are acknowledged as " The Standard Looks.

I call especial attention to my new Stationary

Freight Car Locks, Patent Tubular Night Latches and

Store Door Lead Locks, which are self-adjusting to doors

of any thickness, right or left hand; also, to my new

line of Self-Locking Drawer and Cupboard Locks, loth

Combination and Flat Steel Key; with or without the

Patent Catch entering on the back of the Locks, made

of the best Bronze Metal, and finely finished. Having

enlarged my premises double, this year, I am prepared

to fill my orders with the greatest dispatch.

THE MANUFACTURE OF CAST BRASS PATENT SPRING PAD LOCKS.—The subject oflocks in general is one of universal interest, and the history of lock making, from thefirst rude inception of the art, hundreds of years ago, to its present degree of mechanicalperfection, is possessed of great attraction to all who find pleasure in tracing the gradualdevelopment of human ingenuity. The theme is altogether too expansive, however, forcomplete presentation within the limits of an editorial article, and for the present wemust confine ourselves to the consideration of a single branch of the business of lockmaking—that of the manufacture of brass spring pad locks.

To the hardware trade it is alpinist superfluous to state that the most celebratedgoods of this description in tho market are manufactured by Mr. WILSON BOHANNAN, ofBrooklyn, E. D., N. Y., but the general reader may like to know something of the sourcewhence the finest pad locks emanate, as almost everyone has more or less use for anarticle of this kind.

For nearly thirty years Mr. Bohaunau has made the manufacture of locks of variouskinds his special study, and probably no one at present engaged in the business is morethoroughly conversant with all its details. He, has been awarded nine separate patentsfor improvements in locks, and notwithstanding the reputation which his manufactureshave acquired, is still devoting his energies to the introduction of additional features ofutility, wherever the, possibility for further improvement appears to exist.

For a number of years Mr. Bohannan was located in Baltimore, and during the latewar filled many important orders from the Government for locks of special construction.About eight years ago he came to Brooklyn and established his present factory at thecorner of Broadway and Kossuth Street, where he has extensive facilities for every de-partment of the manufacture, including brass foundry, machine shop, polishing room,finishing room, packing and shipping department, etc. The number of workmen em-ployed is about fifty, and the weekly production is upwards of one hundred and fiftydo/.eu of locks, comprising more than sixty different styles.

The assortment includes the regular line of brass pad locks, of all the usual sizes,with brass keys; also the same with improved flat steel keys.—In regard to the qualityof metal, beauty of finish, durability and the perfect security they afford, these locks areentirely unsurpassed. After completion each lock is subjected to the most careful in-spection, and no work is allowed to pass muster that is not perfect in every respect.

A leading speciality of this establishment is the manufacture of all the various stylesof pad locks required by railroad companies, »uch as freight car and switch locks, withloose and spring drop and chain; stationary freight, passenger car locks, etc.

These are also made to order, to suit any key that may be furnished, and speciallocks are constructed of any desired weight, size, or peculiar pattern that railroad com-panies may require, and confined to their exclusive use.

An additional feature, recently introduced, is the production of a full line of newstyle passenger car locks, handsomely finished in bronze, nickel plate or iron japanned.

Mr. Bohannau is furnishing these various styles of locks to nearly all the leading linesof railroads ill the United States and Canada, and has filled numerous orders from Cuba,Chili, Peril, Brazil and other foreign countries, while in the line of locks for ordinarypurposes, shipments are frequently made even as far as China, Japan and Australia.

Still another department to which particular attention is given is the manufactureof locks for the use of express companies, and in this specialty Mr. Bohannan has securedthe unqalified approval of all the leading express lines throughout the country.

In every department of the business, in fact, the natural result of inventive skill, longexperience and complete manufacturing facilities, is seen in the preference awarded thelocks from this establishment over all others in the market. A new illustrated catalogueand price list, comprising all the latest styles and newest improvements, will soon beissued, and we commend it to the attention of the hardware trade, car builders, railroadcompanies, aud all who are interested in this branch of manufacture.

We now approach the subject of pad locks. Our fellow-townsman, WILSONBOHANNAN, has boon employed in the manufacture of pal locks for the last twenty-five years. He was with HOBBS, the celebrated lock man, and started for himself early

in life. He has taken out nine distinct patents, most of which have been for valuableimprovements. He has had several Government contracts, and has given satisfaction bythe approved character of his work and his own promptness. His place of business is atthe corner of Broadway and Kossuth Street, where lie has built a large brick factory,when- are crowded all the various tools required for the manufacture of locks, as well asa brass foundry, where his own castings HIM made, using always new metal. The castingsbeing generally small, several patterns are joined together by a central runner, which is amere stem that forms a way for the hot metal. In this manner a dozen or more articlesmay be cast in one flask. By means of a buzz-saw driven at a high speed, a boy rapidlycuts apart the diftVrent forms from the runner. They go first to the tumbling burn-1,where they are deprived of sand. The body of the lock is called the box or shell, andcontains the works. The security of the locks depends mainly upon the tumblers; theseare all punched by being forced through dies by moans of a large power press; they arethen notched in what are termed milling machines, each corresponding to the lifts of thekey; in fact the key is made first, and the tumblers cut or sawed to match it. Thetumblers are ranged by numbers from one to ten, and these are so combined by variouschanges as to form almost an endless array of differences.

Mr. BOHANNAN is engaged in the manufacture of 'the glass seal locks; the locks areafter his several patents. These locks are now being made for the American Seal LockCompany at the rate of one thousand a week. He is also under contract to furnish fivethousand smaller locks between this and the first of January next. These locks are usedfor the Internal Revenue Department, safety valves and steam guages. The tools nowemployed, of which the building is full, are of excellent manufacture, and calculated toproduce all parts of the locks and have been made by the most approved tool makers,and possess the latest improvements. They arc kept in excellent order though constantlyin use. The work is divided into departments and given out to a special boss who attendsexclusively to his branch of business, and hires his own hands. This arrangement assuresthe constant attention of the leading men, who are all interested in the final success. Mr.BOHANNAN has two inspectors, through whose hands every lock is passed before beingapproved. Theclosest scrutiny is observed in the inspection, and care taken t:) preventany imperfect locks passing out to the purchasers.

WILSON BOHANNAN. This gentleman is an Eastern man and full of Eastern enter-prise. He commenced early in life as a locksmith, and has devoted more thau twentyyears to lock improvements. He has been constantly practicing, either for the purposeof perfecting the lock itself or the manufacture of its productions. In the former he hassucceeded so well as to secure the support and approbation of the Government, beinghonored with large and important ordrrn: in the latter he has produced machinery thatmakes all parts of his many locks with very little actual labor. By his integrity andgenial friendliness IK; has secured the kind regard and esteem of all his neighbors, andthe confidence of those who had occasion to use his manufacture.

The factory is complete with all the machinery,tools, brass foundry, etc., necessary for the successful prosecution of a large 1 usiness.In addition to the regular line of pad locks, they make to order special locks for railroadcompanies of any weight, six.e or peculiarity, keeping the patterns for the exchinive useof the parties ordering them; they are also making liir railroad companies and car shops,etc., a handsome line of passenger car locks, finished in bronze, nickel plated and ironjapanned; for these goods no list has, up to the present time,been issued. After an ex-amination of the goods represented in his list, we cheerfully commend them to thenotice of tlie tnnle. and can say of them that they are a handsome line of goods, stronglymade and thoroughly tested before leaving the factory. For quality, style and finishthey will compare favorably with any similar goods on the market.
