Sweetwater is named after the Sweetwater River, it’s valley andsurrounding hills on both sides, and bounded upstream by theSweetwater Reservoir. The dam built in 1888, broke in 1906, wasrebuilt and forever changed the geography of the region. Everyone who rides our RRT campout/ride scheduled June 10-12will have a chance to see the beauty of this region and it’s waters. Thisis an easy ride with rolling hills, about 2½ - 3 hours, with a breath-taking view midway thru so bring a snack while overlooking thebeautiful scenery. We’ll eat lunch afterwards. As of the writing ofthis article, only 5 equestrian sites remain open. See flyer for

reservation information. If we run out of camping sites, there is day-use parking with corrals and water or we couldsqueeze you in somewhere as camping sites come with 2 and sometimes 3 corrals. And yes of course, we will have our“eat-too-much” potluck with evening socialization. Who knows, Janet might teach us a dance or two. Ha! Please let Susan (951) 440-3082 know if you are planning to attend, so that when we do fill up, she can help late-comers reserve an extra corral. If this is not enough water for you, you can go to the beach Sunday morning (only a fewmiles away) at Border Beach State Park. There is ample space for day use trailer parking and you can ride in the watersat the beach! NOTE: NOTE: NOTE: NOTE: NOTE: Full hook-ups and showers at this campsite (yeah ... electricity)!!!

I must apologize - I did take pictures of the “crew” onSaturday with my phone - and now I can’t find them...but Iknow you know that you were there. Thanks everyone forhelping out. The Rodeo seemed to be a big hit for thecommunity and many people inquired about RRT duringthat time. Flyers and calendars of events were handed outand everyone was directed to the web page to be updated. Again, thanks to all who helped out and the good Lordwho returned Diane to us in better shape than she left us... Upcoming events that NEED your attention. I do not haveANY sign ups for the July Big Bear Ride at Greenspot...Please let me know that you are planning on coming so wecan know how to split the cost. The cost will depend uponhow many book to split the group rate. I personally bookedthe whole camp for RRT and would like to know aboutcost sharing as soon as possible. There are only 6-8 spotsavailable and I will be using one of them. If we don’t haveRRT interest for the Greenspot ride - I will just open thatup to friends of mine that are not with RRT.

The Danielson Ranch/Point Mugu Ride is taking shape. It was a day ride... Update-Overnight camping is securedat Danielson Ranch - details to follow. See Flyer inNewsletter next month. Remember to keep your Labor Day weekend open forthe RRT Progressive Dinner, Obstacle Course, BBQ, andCharity Event, to be held in Garner Valley. There will bea $20 fee for the Obstacle Course with lunch and $25.00without Obstacle...you gotta’ earn your lunch. I have greatfolks, who are “world” famous for their BBQ skills, readywilling and able to cook the meat for the Obstacle Course(this course will be VERY interesting and not difficult),but fun, fun, fun, Jr. and Grandma alike will be successfulon foot or horseback. We will be requesting donations forLoma Linda in a separate check. Start thinking with a bigheart on this one...$50, $100, $200 or more. Not required, but requested. Loma Linda will provide a tax donationreceipt - so be generous. Come up the mountain and out of the heat to witness thiscraziness and GREAT GREAT food, all for a good cause. Itis up to you, you can make it a day ride or bring your rigand prepare to dry camp for the weekend.

Riverside Recreational TrailsRide to “IN-N- OUT BURGER”That’s What A Trail Ride is All About!

Sunday • May 15, 2016Russell Grace decided that if he was going to lead the ride - he was going to do it right and bring everyone back safe.

He Pre-rode three time, once with Vicki P. Voss, on one of the pre-rides he and Buttercup got into the quick sand. Hetook extra precautions to make sure that didn’t happen when he led the RRT group out on the trail.

Every one showed up hungry and ready to ride started out of hidden valley - leaving pretty close to on time at 10.30. Started out with nine riders ending up with 15 riders. Russell led the way across the river - everyone crossed the riverwithout incident. The group went under the Van Buren Bridge and road along the backwall - near the drive through.

Becky Hageman, Maylynn Motley and LauraDel Toro found their own way crossing VanBuren “scary” but they cowgirled up. Thenout of no where appeared Tish and Sandy. All in all a great ride, a great lunch and a veryproud and happy Russell Grace.

Everyone hitched the horses to the rail untilit was full and then to heavy equipment thatwas blocking the hitching posts. Elana’s horsewas particularly perfect. Many of the RRT’stook there turn as human hitching postsincluding out fantastic newsletter editor,

Diane Thorpe, Mike Hemphill and ElodyMoore - who just recently had a birthday- she has finally rolled double 77’s - thisshould be her year to win the lottery.

I guess the service at In ‘N’ Out that daywas record “slow,” but in the endeveryone got their belly full of burgersand fries. The entire group - all 15 - thistime riding together made it back toHidden Valley in record time.

You guys guessed it... RRT is sneaking up on you!! “Always my Dream Girl”

Who Knew... ? ? ?

Stay tuned - you might be next!

Sweet and unexpected words saidabout Cathy Barber by her highschool sweetheart Rick and nowhusband of 48 years as of June 18,2016!!!A true love story... now with grownchildren and maturinggrandchildren Cathy has beenblessed with a beautiful full lifethat of course included horses froma very young age.As a teenage girl living in Riverside, her childhood friend,Denise, owned a horse that as boarded at a nearby stable

on Victoria Ave.. Cathy was able to rent ahorse and ride along her friend...and soit goes...Cathy remembers that herfavorite rental horse was namedDuke. All these years later, Cathy is quitean accomplished trail rider and stillremains close with her childhood

friend, Denise. Now Denise isCathy’s neighbor. There is a lot to be

said about loyalty and it looks likeCathy could write the book...48 years

married a childhood relationship with Denise that beganeven before that. This is one incredibly loyal and might Isay kind individual.I first met Cathy about 3 yearsago on an RRT ride inCuyamuca. She was not withRRT but had headed toCuyamuca for a week to ridealone.I found that out when I spottedher in the camp site below meand never saw anyone else at hersite. Upon becoming acquaintedI learned that it was her practiceto ride for hours and days alone.Guts - I tell ya.Cathy spent all of her working years working in retail, as agreeting card merchandiser, then at Alpha Beta and retiredfrom Hasbro toys.

Her and Rick movedfrom the city part ofRiverside to RecheCanyon more than 30years ago. Rick en-couraged Cathy to geta horse of her own atthat time.First she purchasedher neighbors horsebut discovered thatshe was riding somuch that she neededa tougher mount and purchased and Arabian at thesuggestion of her vet. She continued to ride for up to 10hours a time - even completing a 30 mile endurance race.Cathy loved riding her Arab, but after joining several ridingclubs - she found that the forward Arab didn’t do well ingroup riding settings and begain her search for the perfectand of course beautiful - gaited horse that she rides today.Cathy most often can be found riding alone in her words“it is just easier” she found it harder to match scheduleswith her friends and also was concerned about riding with“silly” people. Safety always first in her mind. Her favorite riding experience ever is reportedly TuolumneMeadows in Yosemite. She said, she hasn’t been in years,

but it is time to go back.I asked what horserelated thing she wouldlike to do that she hasn’tyet done. She said, “wellI think I have done it all, everything I everywanted.” In fact, if shewas unable to ridebeginning tomorrow -she said, “she didn’tthink there was anything

left undone as far as horses are related.” I could tell you stories about this sweet lady - all day - she isquite a fun spirit, beautiful inside and out yet tough as nails!!She has personally helped me with a trailering situationand has taken a personal interest in building my courageon rough terrain. She loves riding in the wide open desertbecause she doesn’t have to deal with motorcycles or dirtbike riders there. “In addition to having no fear of the rocksfound in the high desert landscape she loves so much.” Somuch and has no fear of horse “rock climbing” there. She decided to join RRT on our Santa Rosa Plateau ridewhen she discovered our group that day to be safe and saneriders on “not” silly horses. We are glad to have Cathy aspart of our posse.

TAG YOUR IT !Only one of the ladies’ that were tagged lastmonth sent in something this month for theNewsletter... Thank You, Diane Partsch forfulfilling your

“TAG YOUR IT!”

Our Trip To Rancho OsoGeorge and I just gotback from our vacationat Rancho Oso in SantaBarbara last Sunday,May 22nd. I hadn’tcaught up with all myemails since RanchoOso didn’t have much

in the way of internet and my phone wasn’t working. Ifinally got caught up and saw that I was “tagged” and myturn to write something. We thought I shouldwrite about our littlevacation to RanchoOso which was somuch fun. It is nestledoff the 154 hwy. in theSanta Ynez mountainarea. It is really abeautiful park center-ed around large past-ures, a barn, and a lot of beautiful horses on the front halfof the campground. This is where we parked our trailer. Itwas fairly quiet when we first arrived. But, by the weekend, there were two groups of campfire girls camping out in the“wagon” sites.

The back half of the campgrounds are where the largercabins are and where thenon-horse people camp -and way in the back - youget people camping out intents. It really is lively from

Friday through Sunday (it was nice arriving during the week). We met a lot of nice peoplethat came in groups fromdifferent areas of Calif. One group was fromNorthern Calif. (sheriffsand mounted sheriffsposse); one member had

this huge 38 ft. long rig! Couldn’t imagine driving thisaround! We went riding by ourselves as some of the groups werevery adventurous and headed in some rough riding areas;plus, there were a lot of rattle snakes at this time of year. One little 5 year old boy had been bit the week before andrequired 5-6 viles of anti-venom serum. He was one luckylittle boy!On Friday, we headed up to Solvang about 40 miles away,to have some of their famous Danish and enjoy the outingand different scenery. Then on Saturday, we rode about 2hours in the morning, then came back for lunch. After lunchwe headed up the mountain to the rifle range. Once you reachthe top, you have a view of all of Santa Barbara and can seethe ocean. Unfortunately, we rod for over 1 ½ hours up thehill (almost to the top), but had to turn back as we had madereservations for dinner at the lodge. Overall, we rode about18 miles that day and we (and the horse!) were tired!Rancho Oso was a very enjoyable trip and we would loveto go back again. The area is so beautiful and was so funand relaxing. Also, they have a TV with cable in the Lodgethat you can go and enjoy. Our only low point of our tripwas when we got some bad gas on the way home. By thetime the gas kicked in, we were in Arcadia. Needless tosay, we were traveling about 40 mph with our flashers onand hauling our horses! Thank the dear Lord; we did makeit back safely all the way to our home!

When you encounter an oblivious trail user speedingaround corners on their mountain bike or letting theirdog run amok, assume that they’re not malicious, theyjust don’t know better. Saying, “Would you mind holdingyour dog over to the side while we pass? I don’t wanthim to get stepped on,” is a lot more effective then yellingobscenities, even if that’s your first impulse.

trail conflicts together than to stay isolated from oneanother and point fingers when problems arise.

Research from the Delaware National HeritageProgram showed that horses and riders weregenerally less disturbing to wildlife than joggers, hikers and even photographers.

Several studies have shown that waste left behindby horses on the trail did not have an adverse effecton water supplies.

Horses are often implicated in causing acceleratedtrail erosion, but studies have shown horses do notcause more erosion than human foot traffic or naturalenvironmental processes.
