Let’s hope we have made the turn for the home stretch to consistently warmer days. I always like this time of year because the sun begins to feel warm on your back. Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the entire staff at Souris School, to send out a huge thank you to our Parent Advisory Council for hosting the Staff Appreciation Breakfast this past Wednesday morning. It was a great way to start our day and we appreciate all your efforts. We would also like to thank all the students who wrote such kind notes to our cleaners, custodians, secretaries, education assistants, bus drivers, and teachers. We have taken all the displays and placed them on the walls in the hallways and in the staff rooms as reminders of what great students we have at Souris School. Wednesday was a very busy day here at the School as we also hosted Southwest Horizon School Division Senior Administration and members of the School Board for the afternoon. These visitors were toured around various areas of the school and visited numerous classrooms, including our Gr. 1-2 Multi-age rooms where they watched our students during their Literacy Centers time. Our visitors were very impressed with all the goings-on in the building and commented on what a welcoming place it was to visit. Students in the Early Years celebrated 100 Day on Tuesday. It was great to see all the projects that the students had spent so much time on. As well, it was wonderful to see all the parents that took time out of their busy day to come and spend some time celebrating with the students.

Lastly, parents of High School students, you should have now received a copy of your son’s/daughter’s transcripts which were handed out on Wednesday. We apologize for the delay but there was an issue with the system responsible for generating the transcripts and we wanted to make sure everything was correct before we handed them out. Have a great long week. MIDDLE YEARS NEWS

Our second annual walk for the homeless was held at Souris School on February 5th, in support of Hannah Taylor’s Foundation for the homeless. We walked a mile around the school to raise awareness for homelessness in Manitoba. We thank each person who brought in a toonie for this cause. It was very much appreciated! With all your help and support we raised $211.00!! This was a big success and made us grateful for what we have. •Middle Years Social Justice Fighters Thank You!! A huge thank you to all parents that chaperoned our Middle Years students on their ski trip to Ski Valley Minnedosa last week. It was a great day and this would simply not have been possible without the following parent chaperones: Jennifer Gordon, Lori Klein, Natalie Nay, Felix Boulanger, Darryl Deleau, Callan Fergusson, Derrick Thompson, Cheryl Apperley, Todd Racher and Duncan Quadrelli. Thanks again!

EARLY YEARS NEWS Oak Hammock Marsh Presentations – Our grades 1-5 students were very fortunate to participate in presentations from Oak Hammock Marsh. The topics varied from water-related topics; soil properties and the wildlife that calls it home; aboriginal games; plants and animals surviving the freeze; and the adaptions of the beaver. A huge “thank you” is extended to the Assiniboine Hills Conservation District that sponsored this day for us. Your support was very much appreciated! “Thank you” to our Middle Years Drama students for their presentation to our Grades K-4 students! The elective students under the direction of Ms. Keyes performed a play based on our monthly virtue of “perseverance”. Awesome job, and thank you for sharing! Recess Guardians - Souris School is very fortunate to be able to implement a program in our school entitled “Recess Guardians”. A team of Grade 4 students has been selected to be part of our Recess Guardians training program which occurred Tuesday morning, February 12th. Recess Guardians teaches elementary school children how to play together in a constructive way at recess. The purpose of the program is to give the children the tools necessary to lead other students in games at recess time with a positive behavior and attitude.

Our team of grade 4 students were trained and given the opportunity to take these games and leadership skills to use on the playground with the younger students. Thank you to Southwest Horizon School Division for providing our school and our students the opportunity to participate in this program!

I Love To Read Month – Our Early Years students will be celebrating ‘I Love to Read Month’ next week! Each day will be highlighting activities based on this theme, promoting the importance and fun in

developing literacy skills.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION The school is now accepting registration for Kindergarten students for the 2013-2014 school year. Parents who have children of Kindergarten age are asked to register these children with the school secretary between 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday at the school office. Parents are asked to bring their child’s birth certificate when they come to register, so we can make a copy for our files. Children must be five years of age on or before December 31st, 2013. Anyone who is aware of neighbors and friends who may have children ready to begin Kindergarten in the fall are asked to pass the message on to them to assist with our school planning. CAREER EXPLORATION NEWS The deadline for entering a Semester 2 Course has passed. A course withdrawal can only be made within the first 20 days of class and with a form validated by the teachers’, parent’s/guardian’s and student’s signatures. Next week, many post-secondary institutions are holding their 2013 Open Houses for prospective students. University of Manitoba: Wednesday, Feb. 20 & Thursday, Feb. 21; University of Winnipeg: Wednesday, Feb. 20; and Red River College: Tuesday, Feb. 19 & Wednesday, Feb. 20. If any Grade 12 student is seriously considering any of these post secondary institutions, these days are an excellent way to gather valuable information for your fall attendance. Parents and students are encouraged to take part in the interactive tours and special presentations, which are

all geared to the success of the future students. Tuesday, March 5, the Grade 10’s will be attending the Brandon Career Symposium. Students will have the chance to explore potential career and job opportunities. Manitoba’s leading industries, employers, post secondary institutions and trade associations will be on hand to provide factual information. The student permission forms will be sent home and must be returned to the school by February 27. The Grade 11’s have been scheduled for a tour of Assiniboine Community College and Brandon University on Monday, March 18. This event is a first-rate opportunity for students to visit the post secondary institutions and to see different options available for them. •Mrs. Cynthia Delaurier

HOOPS The Varsity Boys Basketball Team defeated the Sioux Valley Eagles on February 5th, 62-45. Our leading scorers were Michael Gohl and Nathan Greig each with 11 points and Harris Robertson with 8. Our leading rebounders were Nathan Greig with 8 Defensive rebounds and Carter Suski with 6 and Tyson McRae and Harris

Robertson each with 5. However the guys were 42% from the free throw line. On February 7th the Varsity Boys lost 78-52 to Boissevain Broncos. The boys played a great game but just could not hold back the Broncos who had one individual score 30 points. Last night the boys lost a close game to the Killarney Raiders with a score of 59-44. Our lead scorers were Michael Gohl with 12 and Carter Suski and Tyson McRae each added 8. Great game guys! •Grant Jackson, Manager The Varsity Girls Basketball Team was in Hamiota at Huskies Invitational Tournament this weekend. The girls opened against the number 2 single A ranked Treherne Tigers on Friday. The team was a little sluggish but managed to turn it on in the second half as they won 58-38. Emily Tuttosi had 16 points and 7 steals, while Sarah McKenna added 14 points and 7 rebounds. On Saturday the ladies faced the hosts in the semifinal and played extremely well, especially at the defensive end. Again Emily had 16 points, two more than Sarah Palson. However, the ladies missed a few shots late in the game and fell 45-38. The team then rebounded to capture third place with a 56-33 victory over 4th ranked Teulon. Jessie Robbins led the attack with 15 points, while Sarah Palson had 10 points and 11 rebounds. The girls played better each game as they begin their push to the Provincial Championships in The Pas next month. For her terrific play all weekend Emily Tuttosi was named to the tournament All-Star team. On Monday night the girls played the league leading Virden Golden Bears. The Bears are an awesome team, but the ladies played hard at both ends of the court and put forth a great game. Virden won 67-42 with Sarah M leading the way with 14 points, Emily 12 and Jessie with 9 points and a game high 14 rebounds. The girls’ next action is today at the Elton Invitational

The JV Girl’s Basketball Team defeated the Boissevain Broncos on February 5th 49-21. Niamh McKenna led the Sabres in the win with 7 rebounds, 6 steals, and 2 points, while Kristen Leverington pulled down 10 rebounds and 9 points. Great job girls. On Friday, February 8th the JV Girls headed into Winnipeg for the Immanuel Christian Tournament. In the first game the girls defeated a team from Steinbach by 2 points in an exciting game that went right down to the wire. On Saturday morning, the game was just as intense, and the Sabres were up by 1 point in the last minute of the game, but couldn’t hold on to the lead and ended up losing by 2 points. Saturday afternoon saw the girls play in the 3rd place game against Roseau Valley, and this time the girls came out and played to their full potential, running a great press that gave them a very early lead. The girls played well the enire game, with great defense and great 3-point shooting by Janaye Wurtz, and they captured the bronze once again. All the girls played well on Saturday, and Jamie Sherritt was named to the tournament All Star game. Congratulations on a great weekend girls. The JV Girls team played in their last league game at home on February 11th and lost to the Virden Golden Bears 52-34. Despite a very slow start, the girls played great ball in the second half, and outscored the Bears for the first time this season. Well played girls. •Coach Prévost The Junior Varsity Boys lost a tough match on February 7th 61-47 to the Boissevain Bronco’s. Zach Miner led the team with 24 points! Great game guys. •Coaches Feschuk & Skelton The Middle Years Boys Basketball Team played against Boissevain on February 13th.
