Cub Scout Pack 577Boy Scout Troop 77Venture Crew 77What is Scouting?Scouting is a year-round program uniquely designed to meet the needs of youth and their families. The program offers fun and challenging activities that promote character development and physical fitness. Family involvement is an essential part of the program, and parents are encouraged to play an active role. Scouting provides outdoor programs that stir the imagination and interest of those involved. In the outdoors, Scouts have opportunities to acquire skills that make them more self-reliant. They can explore canoe and hiking trails and complete challenges they first thought were beyond their ability. Attributes of good character become part of a young person as they learn to cooperate to meet outdoor challenges that may include extreme weather, difficult trails and portages, and dealing with nature’s unexpected circumstances. Boy Scouts and Venture Crew members plan and carry out activities with thoughtful guidance from their Scoutmaster and other adult leaders. Please visit www.scouting.org to learn more.

General Commission on United Methodist MenCross and Flame Award

Ben Bryant Ben is currently the Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 577. He has also served as the Pack Committee Chair and has been a Den Leader for Tiger, Wolf, and Bear Dens. In addition to volunteering for Scouting, Ben also serves on the State Board for the Technical College System of Georgia and on the board of the Chamblee High School Blue & Gold Foundation. As a youth, Ben received his Arrow of Light as a Cub Scout at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian and enjoyed Boy Scouts at Briarcliff UMC where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with Gold Palm. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow (Scouting’s national honor society). He also was an Explorer Scout at Chamblee High School. Ben’s scouting efforts are greatly supported by his wife Kristen, his Webelos I son Michael, and his daughter Ella. Why does Ben volunteer for Scouting? - “I was fortunate to have an amazing Scouting experience and have benefited personally and professionally from being an Eagle Scout. I want Michael and all of the other Scouts in our Pack to enjoy the same experiences and ultimately achieve the rank of Eagle. Also, I'm enjoying doing some things I didn't get a chance to do during my youth Scouting days, such as spending the night on the USS Yorktown and visiting Space Camp. Hopefully I can add Philmont (Scout Ranch in NM) to that list as well in a few years!” Thank you Ben!

The Office of Civic Youth-Serving Agencies/Scouting of the General Commission on United Methodist Men recognizes men and women who give unusual amounts of time and energy in dedicated service with children and youth. The Cross and Flame program gives

recognition to adult leaders who have given exceptional service in the use and promotion of programs for young people. This year we are proud to have two recipients of the Cross and Flame Award from our Scouting ministry.

Dennis CryerDennis has been involved in Scouting as an adult leader for nine years. He has been a Webelos Den Leader for Pack 577 and has worked with new and older Scouts as an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 77. He is currently the Life to Eagle Coordinator. Dennis volunteers for the Georgia Orienteering Club and for Springbrook Park. Dennis is Troop 77’s resident expert and teacher for orienteering. Dennis achieved his Arrow of Light as a Cub Scout in Florida. He achieved the Rank of Eagle as a Boy Scout in California. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow where he was Lodge Vice Chief and Vigil Member. Dennis’s favorite thing about Scouting is watching the smile on a young man’s face when he is told he is now an Eagle Scout. Why does Dennis volunteer for Scouting? – “Many adults mentored me in Scouts, and it made a huge impact in my life. I want to make that same impact on others”. Thank you Dennis!

The United Methodist Church acknowledges Boy Scouts of America as contributing to the church’s goals in its ministry with children and youth. Our wonderful scouting program at Oak Grove would not exist except for the numerous adults who step

forward to volunteer their time and share their God given gifts and talent. We are proud to recognize three of those adults below.

Mitch Leff Mitch has been involved in Scouting as an adult leader for twelve years. He has served as an Assistant Den Leader, Den Leader, Cubmaster for Pack 577, Assistant Scout Master for Troop 77, and has served as a Northern Tier High Adventure Trip Leader. He is currently Crew Advisor for Venture Crew 77 and also a Merit Badge Counselor for the Cooking and the Communications merit badges. Mitch is a graduate of the prestigious and challenging Woodbadge Scout Leader Training Program. He is also the recipient of two District Trailblazer Awards, one for Cub Scouts and one for Boy Scouts. Mitch also volunteers on the board of the Lakeside High School Foundation. He has also worked with the Boys & Girls Club of Atlanta providing pro bono marketing counsel for almost 30 years. Mitch volunteers for the Atlanta Press Club and the Georgia Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Through Mitch’s leadership, Venture Crew 77 has grown from one active member four years ago to a successfully operating Crew with 20 co-ed youth members! When asked about his work with the the Venture Crew Mitch commented, “The Venture Crew offers an opportunity for boys and girls to take part in a Scouting program. For young women in particular it’s an opportunity to take part in outdoor adventures. Not all of our Crew members have been a part of the Scouting program, so seeing them have these experiences and learn is very rewarding.” Thank you Mitch!
