Friends of the Chamber: Dixon and Mashburn lauded at annual banquet

by mark k. campbellVolunteers are crucial for or-

ganizations to work. That includes the Azle Area

Chamber of Commerce. And, at the annual banquet,

Director Beth Crowe lauded two

women who make the Chamber hum along by giving freely of their time and talents.

Shireen Dixon and Rhonda Mashburn received plaques for their Chamber volunteer work.

Dixon said her Girl Scout Troop win-ning first place in the 2012 Sting Fling parade led to a con-nection with the Chamber.

Receiving the trophy, she said she likes to vol-unteer and would be happy to help out wherever she could.

So, the C h a m b e r came calling in 2013 to get Dixon to help organize that

year’s Sting Fling parade. She coordinated the event

again in 2014 and is on the festi-val’s board today.

Dixon also organized the 2014 Azle Christmas Parade and plans on helping again this December.

“I really enjoyed getting to work with all the wonderful peo-ple on the Sting Fling and Christ-mas committees,” she said.

While she will continue to help with Chamber activities, Dixon, who hails from Califor-nia and moved to Azle in 2010, said she is also still involved in Scouts and as a team mom for her three sporting children.

“I have a lot of fun memories with the Chamber,” she said. “I especially enjoy seeing how ex-cited children get to participate in the parade.”

Mashburn, a Registered Nurse at Texas Health Harris Meth-odist Hospital Fort Worth, was hailed as a “leading lady behind the scenes,” by Crowe.

“In volunteer hours, she can-not be topped, and in sheer dedi-

cation let’s just say that she will ready send out bulk mail at 2 a.m. – and will lick the envelopes if she cannot find a sponge,” the direc-tor said during the presentation.

Mashburn has helped move – by riding – hundreds of bicycles into place before the Christmas parade and doesn’t hesi-tate to set up hun-dreds of chairs before and after events.

She is willing to endure sweat, freezing, and/or getting drenched to aid the Cham-ber, Crowe noted.

The director called Mashburn “my very best friend and the very best friend of the Chamber...a sister of my heart...a bonus pack-

age.“She is a woman of strength,

integrity, steadfastness, creativi-ty, and pure joy and fun,” Crowe told the banquet attendees.

By Natalie GeNtryRustic and refined. That’s the balance Azle Deer

Cove Event Center owner Sara Langston is constantly striving to achieve.

This year’s winner of the Shin-ing Star Award is always looking for a way to improve the build-ings and grounds of the two-acre tract of land and enhance party-goers’ experiences.

“It’s a passion that borders on obsession,” Langston said. “Any time I go into a store, go to a res-taurant, or even watch a movie, I’m looking for an idea to steal.”

Utilizing her inspiration and creativity is nothing new to Langston; before she opened Deer Cove, she spent 30 years teaching at Azle Junior High School.

“I loved the students in Azle,” she said. “We have a great group of kids.”

Langston wins Chamber’s Beautification award

The fact that Langston was a shop teacher didn’t come as a shock to award presenter Pat Russell. “I wasn’t surprised to learn that she was the junior high’s shop teacher,” Russell said. “Her passion and attention to detail are evident in every square inch of her place.”

This eye for improvements has not gone unnoticed and the Azle Area Chamber of Com-merce honored Langston with the award intended for the per-son or business that has done the most this year to improve the city and beautify the community.

“This year’s winner was obvi-ous to me,” Russell said. “I drive by the business on a daily basis so I’ve been able to watch the evolution from her husband’s barbecue restaurant to a beau-tiful work of art that’s a place people can go to enjoy family

photos, weddings, and parties.”And what an evolution it has

been.“When I started the transition

from the barbecue restaurant to an event center, I had to start small,” Langston said. “There was so much to do and I didn’t want to get overwhelmed.”

So she began her make-over with the ladies bathroom. “Ev-erything was very rustic, and the bathrooms were so plain,” Langs-ton said. “I knew I had to add some sparkle for the ladies and the eight foot by ten foot bathroom was the perfect place to start.”

By the time the restroom was complete, Langston had hit her

stride and the rest of the building followed suit.

“This is the perfect business for me because I like people and am passionate about decorat-ing, landscaping, and parties,”

Langston said. “I’m so shocked and honored to be chosen for this award.”

Now we just have to wait and see what she has planned next for Deer Cove.

by mark k. campbellSteve Parker and his staff

at National Bank of Texas love Azle.

Everyone seems to be in-volved in things other than banking, beginning with the president of the bank.

Parker currently serves on the board of both the Azle Rotary Club and the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as being an integral part of the Azle Educational Foundation and Texas Health Azle boards.

Most at NBT are involved in Azle activities.

Having local people help-ing local folks is a key to Na-tional Bank’s success, Parker said.

Azle is the focus for the bank and its members and NTB can boast of some ex-perienced personnel.

Parker said, “I started in Azle in 1989.”

Branch manager Carissa Widner began her career in 1997. She currently serves on the council of the city of Sanctuary and is actively

involved in the Azle Lions Club.

Jessica Corley, vice-pres-ident lending, has over 19 years banking experience. She moved back to her home-town of Azle in 2013. She is actively involved in the Azle community with the Rotary Club and the Optimist Club.

Sarah Hicks, Diana Rust, Bobbie Baldwin and the lat-est addition to the teller line, Baylee Davis, round out the staff.

Parker said, “Pretty much all of us have spent years in the Azle community. And all of our customers that we have known through the years mostly have come to us.”

From its temporary build-ing beginnings, the National Bank of Texas is now settled into a modern facility at 405 Commerce Street next to the Post Office.

At the bank, customers can expect traditional services with hometown flair.

“All banking loans – real estate, automobile, business

– as well as all the deposit products” are available, Parker said.

“They want a stable en-vironment which would be a bank like ours,” he said.

The security of the Fed-eral Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insur-ing deposits up to $250,000 is comforting to customers.

Parker said it’s impor-tant to him that he and his employees work in the community with the peo-ple who are their custom-ers – hence their presence throughout town.

Lobby hours for the bank are Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday hours are extended from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The drive-through is open from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday.

Community spirit is alive at NBT – that’s what the National Bank of Texas is all about.

by Natalie GeNtryDuring her presentation for

the Twinkling Star Award, presenter Paula Ambrose suc-cinctly highlighted the trial all presenters face when preparing a speech to honor new award re-cipients.

“These past couple of weeks I’ve developed a new set of skills,” Ambrose said. “They include spy-ing, telling falsehoods, practicing deception, and some plain good old-fashioned stalking.”

But all the work and decep-tion was for a good cause: to honor Azle’s Businesswoman of the Year, Christie Storey.

She’s the wife to Tom and mother to Parker and Catherine – as well as owner of the pink shuttered Catty Roo’s Boutique.

Storey isn’t originally from Azle. She was living and work-ing in Burleson at her family’s business when she met Tom.

“She was selling toys for grown men and it was during one of these sales that she actually met her husband,” Ambrose said.

These toys just happen to be tractors.

“I got to wear jeans and boots every day,” Storey said. “I’m re-ally a jeans and boots girl.”

It wasn’t long until Storey moved to Azle where she fo-cused on being a full-time mom and barrel racer.

“Like most women though, even though everything was going great, she felt the need to do more,” Ambrose said. “So she decided to become a boutique owner.”

Storey chalks up the decision to open Catty Roo’s to a tiny spark of insanity.

“I don’t know why I did it, I didn’t want to work for anybody else,” she said. “I just knew I couldn’t stay home.”

And so her adventure as a boutique owner began.

She said she never expected recognition and was shocked by the award.

“I just appreciate everybody who has helped me get here; family, friends, and customers,” Storey said. “I’m truly humbled by the honor.”

scribed the gumption it took for Toni Jackman – owner of Spa 10 – to start a new business.

“Opening a business takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but it takes a little more than

Spa 10: The Rising Star New Business of the Year

that, too,” Temple said. “I was telling someone else that some-times it’s simply that a person doesn’t want to work for some-one else and they want to create an environment where people feel special and the employees feel like they’re appreciated.

“Sometimes a person wants to create an environment where ev-eryone becomes a family.”

Jackman said, “I have 11 girls working in my shop and we love being on Main Street in Azle.

“My girls at the shop are the reason why my shop works – we all get along like a family and love working together.”

Temple noted that the relation-ship between the employees at Spa 10 is evident to customers.

“I went to Spa 10 last week,” Temple said. “Not only did they do a great job on my manicure and pedicure, but the staff was very friendly and professional.”

Originally from Fort Worth, Jackman moved to Azle in 1995.

“I’ve been in the salon busi-ness for 20 years as a nail techni-cian and have been a salon own-er for the past 5 years,” she said.

“I want Spa 10 to have that small town friendly environ-ment,” she added.

Judging from her award, it must be working.

Leonard named Azle’s top businessman

Eric Leonard (right), manager of Cash America Pawn, ac-cepts the Businessman of the Year award from 2014 win-ner Brian Rogers and Chamber President Shelli Price. Photo by Carla Noah Stutsman

BY mARk k. CAmPBELL“A total surprise.”That’s what Eric Leonard,

manager of Cash America Pawn, said when he was chosen as the Azle Area Chamber of Com-merce Businessman of the Year.

“I’m speechless. It’s quite an honor,” he said.

Receiving the award from the previous year’s winner – Brian Rogers of Ace of Azle – made it even more special, Leonard said.

“I think the world of him and it was great that he passed the torch,” Leonard said.

Cash America Pawn has been in Azle since the early 1990’s.

The business moved from Main Street to its current loca-tion 701 Boyd Road in October 2011.

Leonard’s journey to Busi-nessman of the Year began with his employment with Cash America Pawn.

He moved through the ranks to assistant store manager, shop manager, and beyond.

His preference is to manage a shop – a valuable asset in com-munities, he noted.

“With pawn shops, it about building relationships and serv-ing the community,” Leonard said.

Another plus is that when he assumed control of the Azle shop, he no longer had to com-mute to his job.

“I got to buy a home and be-come a member of the com-munity,” he said. “That’s pretty

nice.”From the stage, Rogers said of

Leonard, “The people who work with and for him say that he has an analytical mind that can take any directive that comes his di-rection and filter it to meet the needs of their particular location in our community.”

His employees referred to Leonard as “an excellent leader”

and hailed him for creating a positive work atmosphere.

With delegation and by in-volving his entire staff, every-one at Cash America Pawn feels responsible and valuable, Rog-ers told the assembled banquet crowd.

Leonard, married with two teenage daughters, has been in Azle since July 2011.

Rogers said that the Cash American Pawn’s corporate of-fice has high aspirations for

Leonard, but he’s happy to “hang his hat” in Azle.

And that’s good news for the community since Leonard is known for going out of his way to not only oversee the needs of his many customers but to see that his employees – some col-lege students – have the flexibil-ity to further their educations.

That expansive view is what helped make Leonard the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce Businessman of the Year.

Schlueter known for exemplary service, smileby carla noah stutsman

The Azle Area Chamber of Commerce’s Ambassador of the Year has come a long way, baby.

All the way from the Chicago area, actually.

Cat Schlueter is originally from Wilmette, Illinois, a suburb of Chi-Town. While attending college at William Woods Uni-versity in Fulton, Missouri, she

met her husband of more than 20 years, Doug.

She also picked up a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology there, and is currently working toward a master’s degree in hu-man resources. She’s also certi-fied through the National Society for Human Resources as a Pro-fessional in Human Resources.

The Schlueters moved to Fort

Worth in 1997 when Doug land-ed a position with Alcon Labs.

In 2003, they decided to get out of the “hustle and bustle” of Fort Worth – their search led them to a great place in Parker County outside Azle with land and trees where they built a home.

As Human Resources Manag-er for the city of Azle since July 2008, Schlueter administers the personnel files, policies and pro-cedures, and benefits for some 200 city employees.

Schlueter is passionate about Azle, and loves welcoming new people and businesses to the area.

But she’s also passionate about service, and to that end serves not just as an Ambas-sador, but as a deacon at Azle Christian Church and on various committees within the Human Resources profession.

Her other passions include her family’s menagerie of dogs, cats, and horses and the band Duran Duran.

But it’s her two daughters – Lindsay, a 19-year-old freshman at Tarleton State University, and Haley, a 16-year-old sophomore at Azle High School – who are

her pride and joy.Ambassador President Casey

Jones, in presenting the award for Ambassador of the Year to Schlu-eter at the Chamber’s annual awards banquet Friday, Jan. 30, noted her exemplary service to the Chamber and the community.

“This year’s recipient always has a smile on her face and is willing to help wherever she can,” Jones said.

Schlueter said, “I am humbled and sincerely honored to receive this award. Being associated and

involved with this wonderful group of professionals over the past several years has truly vali-dated my reasons for wanting to become a part of this community.

“There is a genuine sense of excitement amongst all of the Ambassadors when we welcome new businesses to the Chamber; the friendships and business re-lationships I have forged as a result of being an Ambassador have enriched both my personal and professional life.

“I am truly blessed.”

Dr. Aluka graduated from The University of Texas Southwest-ern Medical School. She is committed to her new role and looks forward to becoming a vital part of the Azle community.

When not in the operating room, Dr. Aluka enjoys exer-cising, drawing, reading, being a wife and mother to her chil-dren. According to Bob Ellzey,

Texas Health Azle president, Dr. Aluka’s training and previ-ous roles in academia and the clinical setting will prove to be beneficial for residents of Azle and surrounding communities. “Dr. Aluka brings an incredible amount of passion for truly car-ing for and about her patients. by carla noah stutsmanShe’s the picture of profes-

sionalism who moonlights as a creative artist.

Her planning skills landed her a place on the Sting Fling and Christmas Parade committees.

She’s Randa Goode, who was presented with the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce’s Shoot-ing Star – Director’s Award at the Chamber’s awards banquet Friday, Jan. 30.

Coincidentally – or not – Goode was promoted earlier the same day to the position of As-sistant Vice President Lending at Pinnacle Bank Azle, where she’s been employed since 2002.

Beth Crowe, executive director for the Chamber, described Goode as a multi-talented woman who grew up in Azle and graduated from AHS in 1992.

Although she’s an execu-tive by day, her time off is spent writing Young Adult Christian-based books and behind the lens of a camera.

“Randa was a new mem-ber of the Sting Fling com-mittee last year and brought a new and brilliant dynamic to the indoor portion of the festival with a talent show,” Crowe said. “She also brings her great planning skills and photography tal-ents to the Christmas com-mittee, in addition to serv-

ing as an Ambassador for the Chamber.”

That’s not all this classic wife and mother of two busy and tal-ented teenagers who also brings home the bacon does, either.

As President of the AHS Band Boosters, she’s a fundraiser, stu-dent organizer, teacher/director, confidante, and stage-mother, all rolled into one.

At home, she’s been Ronnie Goode’s wife for 14 years and is mom to AHS senior Mia and freshman Ty.

Goode said when Crow began introducing the winner of the award, she thought it was her co-

worker and AHS classmate Re-gina Stokes who would receive it.

“But as Beth went on, I real-ized she was talking about me. It was somewhat humbling in a way,” Goode said. “I don’t par-ticipate in community events or serve on committees or boards to

get an award. I do these things because I love living in Azle and want to help out and make a dif-ference. Getting an award is just an unexpected bonus.”

Goode said that after high school, she moved away for a few years, but quickly realized that other towns are not like Azle

and moved back.“I love living and working in

Azle where I have the opportu-nity to truly be a part of the com-munity no matter if I’m helping out at a school function, work function, community event, or my personal life,” she said. “There really is no place like it.”

ticipant in all things Azle since 2009.

Nate Simmons grew up in Cle-burne, where he graduated high school before attending the Uni-versity of Texas at Arlington; he got a degree from there in 2005.

He took a position at Pinnacle Bank’s Cleburne branch in 2007.

In 2009, he transferred to Pin-nacle’s Azle branch, where he and his bride Jennifer became enchanted with the town.

Although the newlyweds lived in Fort Worth by that time, Sim-mons soon found himself Presi-dent of the Azle Optimist Club. He was named Optimist of the Year in 2012.

Simmons is a member of Rotary, serves on the annual Christmas Parade and Celebra-tion committee collaboration be-tween the Optimist Club and the Chamber – is Chairman of the Economic Development Com-mittee for the Chamber, and is on the Follow The Flag Steering Committee, where he served as Chairman last year.

who have been honored with this award in the past, it’s just very humbling to think others would put you in that category,” he said. “It’s an honor to get it, but you don’t do it for any recogni-tion, you do it to lend a hand.

“I hope people will see that and recognize what it means to volunteer or give of your time and effort,” he added.

Simmons made a brief but im-portant stop on the way from his seat in the audience to the stage to accept his award.

“I stopped to give my wife a kiss,” he said. “What I do takes time away from my spouse and my family – our families are the biggest supporters of what we do.”

It’s all about balancing work, personal life and family, Sim-mons said.

Why does he do it?For Azle.“Azle has a lot of identity, and

we’re so happy to be a part of it.”

“We’re getting ready to go to Arkansas to float the Buffalo River,” he said. “It’s rewarding work that’s all about finding God in nature, ministering to some guys – it’s very refreshing.”

In the midst of all that, Sim-mons and his wife purchased a lot Azle in 2013, started home construction, and moved in last

Kriss Myers, M.D. grew up in Longview, attending school there before heading to Stephen F. Austin State University for his undergraduate education.

After earning a diploma in 1983, Myers attended graduate school at University of Texas Medical School, where he completed studies in 1987.

His family practice residency was undertaken at JPS in Fort

Worth in 1990.During this time, he prac-

ticed family medicine in No-cona, but moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area in 1990 to start HealthFirst with several other doctors.

In 1995, Myers became asso-ciated with Dr. James Savage in Azle, and still cares for some of his patients today.

At that time, Myers moved to Azle from the Metroplex.

In 2000, he opened the clinic where it stands today, and now employs two physicians, four nurse practitioners, and one physician assistant.

Myers and his wife, Ronah, have five children, three of whom have graduated from, or

are currently attending Louisi-ana State University. The fami-ly is, of course, big fans of LSU.

When not caring for the citi-zens of Azle, Dr. Myers enjoys playing golf.

P. Daniel Gonzalez, M.D. was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the son of a retired na-val officer.

He grew up in Florida, along the east coast of the U.S. and in California.

By the time he started tenth grade, Gonzalez had been en-rolled in 10 schools.

He started high school at Ar-lington Bowie and graduated there in 1983.

He went on to earn a bach-elor’s degree from Texas A&M

University in 1987 and re-ceived his Master’s there as well, in 1989.

Gonzalez then went to work for Kraft for five years before making the decision to attend medical school at UT South-western in Dallas, where he graduated in 1998.

He completed his residency at John Peter Smith hospital in Fort Worth.

Gonzalez was Board certified in Family Medicine in 2001

and in Sleep Medicine in 2009.He now practices Family

Medicine and Sleep for Sleep Healers, which is part of the HealthFirst system.

He lives in the Metroplex with his wife D’ann. The couple has two daughters, one of whom is following family tradition at Texas A&M University.

Gonzalez is a lifetime Aggie fan and loves to hunt when not spending time with his family or at the practice.

by mark k. campbellStar Bank is not one of those gi-

ant banking chains that dominate the landscape of most cities and towns.

And the employees at Star Bank

know that’s a good thing. That way they can be more

community focused.Christy Dusek arrived at the

Lake Worth branch just a couple of weeks before the bank opened in February 1998.

From its beginnings in a tem-porary building then to its stream-lined, modern facility today, Dusek has been there from the start.

“We are so fortunate to be a community bank,” she said. “Cus-

tomer service is what we do best.”And that starts from the mo-

ment you step inside where you are immediately greeted.

“We know who our custom-ers are – we call them by name,” Dusek said.

Star Bank offers another facet that is highly unusual – and one you won’t see at Chase or some other huge banking corporation.

“We’re an animal-friendly bank,” Dusek said.

She said that often dogs Corona and Lilly come inside with their owners and they “roam the bank.”

Dusek has a history with com-munity banks – in fact, throughout her decades long banking career, every year has been in those types of banks.

From stints at the old Azle State Bank – twice – to Lake Worth National – where Dusek worked for 10 years – to Shady Oaks Na-tional Bank to today, she has been involved in community banks.

Dusek said, “Community banks

are family banks. I’ve been here for 17 years and this is my work family. I spend as much time with my work family as with my real family.”

An Azle resident since arriving in town in 1970, Dusek graduated from Azle High School in 1978.

Then she got into banking.“That’s all I know,” she chuck-

led.Star Bank, located at 3930 Boat

Club Road, is “where everybody is somebody,” their motto.

The Lake Worth bank – and the White Settlement and Burleson branches – offers the usual array of services that can be found at most banks.

Plus there’s that personal con-nection the national banks lack.

Star Bank has an app now, and, in the near future, mobile deposit-ing will become a reality.

Or you can come in and visit in person. Dusek and her cohorts would love to see you – and your pet, too.

Star Bank is community focused: And they’re animal-friendly, too

AZLE DENTAL CARE

“Complete Dental Care for the Entire Family”

Brooke Porter, D.D.S. & Associates

Xtreme Lawn Care: Azle’s top businessby mark k. campbellPurple. If you see a person or vehicle

involved with Xtreme Lawn Care, somewhere you’ll see the color purple.

A lot of it.Rather than use the tradition-

al green to brand a landscape business, co-owner Justin Berg chose purple.

Today, everyone associated with Xtreme Lawn Care is adorned in purple – including owners Wayne Buchanan and Berg.

Buchanan, 45, started the busi-ness in 1993, working part-time on weekends and holidays while keeping his regular full-time job.

Eventually, Xtreme became so popular that Buchanan took it on as his major job.

Born and raised in Azle – he has never left – the business’ clientele grew into the hundreds.

And it would soon expand greatly when Berg came on board.

A transplant here after sell-ing his successful business in Boston, Berg not only came to Azle but brought his parents and in-laws along, too.

Buchanan asked Berg to grow and run Xtreme while the former continued to work in the field.

That was a good business de-cision.

From 250 clients, Xtreme blossomed to more than 2,500 in three years all over the area – and with every employee wearing purple.

That unifying color helped everyone, Berg said. “It creat-ed a pride in the company and that translates into work.”

With such a presence in Azle – and all over Fort Worth and the area as well – Xtreme is mighty successful.

Still, Berg said the Cham-ber’s award came as a surprise.

Both he and Buchanan were out of town on the night of the banquet, but Berg was effusive in his thanks to the Chamber.

“We are very honored,” he said. “Shocked. We didn’t know – we’re thrilled.”

Buchanan echoed that: “I’m very proud of this award. It means a lot to me.

“We work very hard and take a lot of pride in what we do. It’s nice to know that it is being noticed.”

Xtreme’s positive reputation continues to spread and so does the fact that an Azle company is sought after by “big city” folks.

“It’s given us some notori-ety,” Berg said. “Not a lot of businesses come out of Azle. We take pride in that.”

With 45 employees, Xtreme is a substantial employer in town and “we’re happy about that,” Berg said.

He noted that Xtreme man-

aged to break some stereotypes about the landscape business.

For one, there was a stigma about it.

And: women were often afraid of landscapers coming over with their “loud trucks.”

Careful branding has over-come those preconceptions, Berg said.

A major reason for the suc-cess is Xtreme’s dedicated em-ployees.

“It takes a special person to work 12 hours in 100-degree weather dealing with grass and dust and poop,” he said.

Buchanan and Berg have as-sembled a professional team with an impeccable reputation.

Or, as the Chamber noted during the Gold Star Business of the Year presentation: “In recognition and appreciation of the admirable example your business has set earning the re-spect of the Azle community.”

That’s high praise – worthy of honoring.

So the Chamber did.

The purple vehicles of Xtreme lawn care are regularly seen around town – and the area – delivering quality, pro-fessional landscaping. The business boasts over 2,500 clients and employs 45 people.
